Play Greater Podcast — Episode #31: We're Back!

We've been away for a while (okay, a long while), but the Play Greater Podcast has officially returned from its extended hiatus! We aren't here to dwell on the past; we're looking at the new state of things and everything exciting on the horizon for Greater Than Games.

In this episode, we talk about our big return, special collaborations, and even manage to make time to spin the wheel!

Topics of Note:
  • The Return of Greater Than Games: We are back in action! We discuss the relaunch of the studio and what the "new normal" looks like for us moving forward.

  • The Expanding TCCU: The Trevor Casterline Cinematic Universe has expanded once again, with a live-art drawing show, starring Christopher Badell, Adam Rebottaro, and Nolan Nasser! Check out Draw The Line!

  • The new GTG Team and going to Gen Con: Who is part of GTG now? Check it out! Also, come see us at Gen Con in booth #2856!

  • New Games from GTG: Digital Detox, a game designed by Christopher Badell, and Crime Scene Tamperer that we made in conjunction with the Brothers Chaps!

  • Who are the Brothers Chaps? We dive into our excitement about working with Mike and Matt Chapman, the creators of the legendary Homestar Runner. If you don't know about those things, you should check it out!

  • New Website & Store: We have a fresh coat of paint! Check out the all-new GTG website to see the latest projects and updates.

    • CRITICAL URL UPDATE: Our website is now www.greaterthan.games. Please do NOT go to the old .com address. Only "Greater Than Dot Games" from here on out!

    • The Webstore: Looking for games? You can find everything in our new digital storefront here .

  • Submit Your Letters: We want to hear from you! We've set up a brand-new submission form for your questions, design quandaries, and general curiosities. Submit your letters here!

  • SPOILER WARNING: The Stormlight Archive: We spend some time geeking out over Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series. If you aren't caught up, skip the following segment:

    • Spoilers start at: about 52 minutes in

    • Spoilers end at: around 1 hour and 5 minutes in

  • The JoCo Cruise: We chat about our time on the high seas with the JoCo Cruise — a nerd-centric floating festival of music, comedy, and gaming!

  • Outro: We also have a new Outro! Good luck, Paul!

Special Thanks

A massive shout-out to Trevor for all the help in getting this show back on the air and into your ear holes! We couldn't have done it without the technical wizardry.

Play Greater Podcast: Episode #1302 Nov 202301:36:41

Spoilers: This podcast was actually a dream the ENTIRE TIME!

Show Notes:

Run Time: 1:36:41

Howdy, howdy, and another howdy! Welcome one and all to this month's rendition of the Play Greater Podcasts. There's one of your hosts Christopher, and there's even two of your hosts Paul. Who could have guessed?! Who WOULD have guessed?! Who, in fact, might have guessed?! (Spoilers again: Probably you!)

Listen as your hosts begin with some B+ banter (getting higher marks from these shownotes than they anticipated) before jumping into some more serious topics.

On that note…

Content Warning: There is a tonally heavier segment dealing with serious world news which starts at 0:17:38. If you'd like to jump past this heavier segment and stick to the lighter segments full of jokes, skip to 0:32:25.

Jumping back into jokes, listen to riveting discussions of games and how to play them greater. Learn about the original hipsters of legacy components. And, hear yet another obligatory plug for the RPG Burning Wheel. (It's seriously that good!)

But, before we go any further, we must pause to ponder… Christopher climbed the Swiss Alps. It was upon these mountains that he recognized a righteous recommendation for all of you.

Christopher's Righteous Recommendation: Watch "For All Mankind" on Apple TV (mistakenly referred to as being on HBO MAX on the air, due to Christopher misremembering which streaming service it was on).

If you have some righteous recommendations, radical reactions, or reasonable responses for these ribald rapscallions. Send us a letter about it by following this artisanal hyperlink!

And, remember…

Don't jumpscare Jed!

Play Greater Podcast: Episode #2906 Mar 202501:27:23

The Show Notes are MINE! (Temporarily.)

Show Notes:

Run Time: 1:27:22

Hello, everyone! It's me, one of your hosts, Christopher! Matt has left the room... and the country! Our intrepid Audio Technician and Show Note Writer is in a far-flung land... actually, he's on a boat, so it's more like far-flung water. Anyway, he's not here, so you're stuck with me for writing the show notes! Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! I cannot be controlled, only unleashed!

Me and two of your hosts Paul talk about goofs, the lack of a Matt Bender, and we claim that he'll put certain information in the show notes... but that's impossible! And I have no ability to answer that Matt Bender specific question, so these show notes have no answers! Then, I tell a story about dryers. (With a lot of rabbit trails.) The story ends on a cliffhanger! Who could say what happens next?

We finally get into GTG News and World Report! Disparation things are going well! The Sentinel Choices Zine layout is complete! Paul is on a cruise! (With Matt Bender!) The Spirit Island accessories survey is probably coming out in a week or two! The Defenders of the Realm crowdfunding campaign is happening later this year! Bad things are happening in Rwanda! A very cool building in St. Louis is going to go away, but replaced with a hella cool building! Round buildings are cool! Gen Con is in several months and we're working hard on stuff for it! And that's everything you need to know.

Then, we move onto your letters, which are delightful, but not plentiful enough! More letters, please!

We start off with a fantastic quiz game to see how up on Sentinel Comics and pop culture our very own Paul Bender is. The answer: somewhat! To both!

We also discuss pronunciations, beverages, food, and more!

The Wheel of Topics generates a very early "Classic Christopher Story"! Spoilers: Christopher doesn't get injured in this one! (But someone does!)

We'll be back in a month with another episode! Write in more letters! We need more!

And, as always, don't be shy!

COME SAY HI!

In our questions section this month, as well as discussing many important topics, we learned that there's essentially no difference between Ed McMahon and Vince McMahon. Who knew?

This episode we also welcomed a special guest to spin the Wheel of Topics for us. You'll never be able to guess this guest… so you'll have to listen to find out!

Play Greater Podcast: Episode #606 Apr 202301:14:26

Have we got some April Fools for you…

Show Notes:

Run Time: 1:14:36

That's right folks! Your very own April Fools are back: Christopher and Paul, the hosts of this very podcast! They're here with an entirely new sixth episode, bringing banter, tomfoolery, and complex feelings about the handling of Lord of the Rings lore in mass-media.

Taking a break from tomfoolery, there's also a sober segment about social injustice and about what we can all do to help those most affected.

Specifically, in the letters segment this month, there was a reference to an article about the unjust, anti-trans laws being passed in Missouri. That article can be found here

If you'd like to help support those affected in the St. Louis metro area; or if you are in the area and need support yourself, there's a resource for you here.

If you'd like to help support mental health and suicide prevention resources for LGBTQ+ youth; or if you or someone you know needs this type of support, there's a resource for you here.

We take these things very seriously. We hope you do, too.

Later on in the letters segment, there's a spoilery discussion about the Rings of Power series on Amazon (Starting at approximately: 0:36:15). If you want to avoid spoilery type of things in that segment then we would recommend skipping ahead! (Skip ahead to: 0:54:08)

Finally, if you find yourself with a query and/or question OR if you just want to help our hosts avoid mail-less melancholy next month, this handy dandy form is for you!

More tomfoolery and jerryfoolery to come! (And, hopefully, fewer praline precans...)

Play Greater Podcast: Episode #402 Feb 202301:45:25

A new episode just for you! Goodness gracious, great balls of fire!

Show Notes:

Run Time: 1:45:39

This here episode of the Play Greater Podcast comes to you piping hot off the editorial press! To counterbalance last month's extended banter segment, this episode begins with a mere smattering of truncated banter… But! Have no fear! There is still banter a-plenty sprinkled throughout the episode for your listening pleasure.

In the GTG News and World Report(s) section, we also annouce and drop some info about this thing. And other games! Get hype!

Our delightful (and hopefully delighted) audience came through this month with a truly astronomical amount of letters. So thanks to all you scribes and scriveners out there in Podcast Land… we love your insatiable curiosity this month!

Next month, if you, dear listener, find yourself with any curiosity that you wish were satiated by one of your hosts Christopher and/or two of your hosts Paul, submit your question(s) with this handy dandy form.

During the course of answering letters, Christopher mentioned a fabled Gathering of Heroes in times long past… we thought there was info online about that historical event, but only this GTG forum thread, in which the link to a photo is long lost to the sands of internet time. Good news: long-time friend of ours Russ had photos!

Also, for the record, Russ is great! (Though not pictured in any of those photos.)

There were also topics… found on a wheel… a wheel of topics one might say… listen to this episode if you'd like to learn more about this most topical of tires!

Until next month's thrilling episode!

Well howdy hey howdy there! Welcome to another episode of the Play Greater Podcast!!!

Listen as one of your hosts Christopher and two of your hosts Paul accurately assess that there are three types of show notes–the first type being what you're reading right now, the second type being the printed lister letters you hear read on the show, and the third type being an E natural.

Check below for links and/or info mentioned in episode:

Lo, the note in question was indeed an E natural. But if you want, we could call it an F flat so that it feels like one of your hosts Christopher was closer to being right with his guess!

Happy New Year from GTG to you!

Show Notes:

Run Time: 1:27:59

This third episode of the Play Greater Podcast starts off with, frankly, too much banter. But here we are! It's not entirely unexpected.

In the GTG News and World Reports segment, we mention that a GTG game was covered in an article in... US News and World Reports! Check it out!

Christopher did a couple of livestreams last month with the Penny Arcade people. One about Sentinels of the Multiverse: Definitive Edition (including new content from the upcoming Rook City Renegades) and one about Spirit Island (including the Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs). Very cool!

Then we answer questions! Submit more questions for us with this form!

We also spin the Wheel Of Topics a few times and manage to talk about a couple topics.

See you next month!

Paul talks about his home! Christopher talks about a cave! They also talk about what Greater Than Games has been up to in the last month. AND! They spin a wheel? Indeed! The Wheel of Topics, in fact! Is that catching on yet? It's part of our logo now, so we're obviously leaning into it. Fingers crossed. (We also talk about TikTok. You're welcome/we're sorry.)
