The Zodiacal Study Strategy18 Mar 202600:46:06

Have you ever felt overwhelmed trying to learn herbal medicine and astrology?

This is one of the biggest challenges I hear from people studying herbalism on its own… throw astrology on top of it, and it just seems like too much. They say, "I was already overwhelmed trying to learn how to become a great herbalist. And now, to practice this way, I have to learn the massive system of astrology too. I'm busy with my day job, family, home, and garden, and it's too much."

But it doesn't have to be that way! There is a strategic approach that allows you to study herbal medicine and astrology at the same time. The philosophical bases of both herbal medicine and astrology are, at their core, one and the same- for they are built off the same fundamental blueprint of nature.

When you study these fundamental principles and patterns of astrology and herbalism simultaneously, it enhances your learning of both systems, making it quicker to learn them and thus incorporate them into your work with people.

This is what I call the Zodiacal Study Strategy.

It is a model for study that you can incorporate into the time you have available—or rather the time you create—to optimize your learning process of both herbalism and astrology. It is built on the similarities between the philosophical foundations of holistic herbalism and astrology, or what I think of as the architecture of the zodiac.

As with anything worth learning, you must make time to study, integrate, and practice. Unfortunately, it won't magically appear. What differentiates a good herbalist or astrologer from a great one is discipline and consistency in studying and gaining experience. And it's about using your time strategically. What follows is one year's worth of study. By the end of that year, you will have a solid foundation in both astrological medicine and clinical herbal medicine.

How to Really Read Your Constitution in the Natal Chart11 Mar 202600:48:49

In this episode, Sajah talks about how to assess a person's constitution through the natal chart and why this matters for effective holistic herbalism. You'll learn how the rising sign, planetary placements, and the 1st to 6th house relationship reveal underlying patterns that determine health, imbalance, and therapeutic strategy.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • What "constitution" means in holistic medicine — and why it's foundational

  • Why treating symptoms without constitutional assessment often fails

  • The difference between prakruti (core constitution) and vikruti (current imbalance) in Ayurveda, and how they relate to the natal chart

  • The #1 mistake beginners make in medical astrology

  • Why the rising sign is the true constitutional doorway

  • How to assess constitution through: the rising sign's element, mode, and ruling planet, planets conjunct the ascendant, the ruling planet's placement, strength, and dignity

  • How the 1st house and 6th house form a quincunx, revealing health vulnerabilities

  • A breakdown of the Gemini–Scorpio elimination axis as a case study

  • When the rising sign can be overridden (stelliums, stationary planets, elemental dominance)

  • Why constitutional knowledge should guide herbal formulation

The Ultimate Guide to the "Anti" Herbs07 Jan 202600:43:22

Look at just about any materia medica, and you will see the word "anti" in front of many an herbal action. These are subtypes of the antimicrobial action, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, antiviral, antiparasitic, antiamoebic, and antimalarial.

When you see these words, it is easy to assume that the herbs they describe are like natural pharmaceuticals designed to "kill" pathogens. However, that framework can mislead you and sometimes lead to poor clinical choices.

In this article, we'll rethink the entire premise of "anti-herbs" and explore how they really work.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • Why the "anti-" framework (antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, etc.) can create an allopathic mindset about herbs

  • That many herbs work by increasing host resistance rather than killing microbes directly

  • Why the "antiviral" label is often misleading — and why there's no such thing as a true broad-spectrum antiviral

  • What scientific Petri dish studies actually tell us (and where the big leaps in logic happen)

  • How the "herbal antibiotic" idea falls short — and whether herbs can disrupt gut flora or drive resistance

  • Why organ affinity and tissue energetics matter more than chasing the pathogen

  • Common pitfalls caused by over-focusing on "killing" instead of restoring balance

  • An introduction to my top 10 broad-spectrum "anti" herbs

Your Body: More Than a Machine19 Jan 202200:15:30

The body can be viewed as an ecosystem or machine, and these varying paradigms significantly impact how you view and treat disease, and certainly how you use herbal medicines. With each offering a unique perspective to healing, it's the combination of both that is stronger than its parts.

In this week's blog post, you'll learn:

  • What vitalism is and why it matters
  • The biomedical versus vitalist approach to healing
  • The language of the six tissue states
  • How to combine these two perspectives in your practice

  • What the "seven basics" are in the alchemical tradition

Cultural Differences in Medicine Making10 Sep 202100:17:56

Herbal medicine is and has always been, the peoples' medicine.

Just as there's significant variation in the people and cultures that fill our world, there's a myriad of medicine-making techniques that reflect these differences.

What are some traditional forms of medicine making and how do they compare to today's more "scientific" approaches to herbal pharmacy? Furthermore, is there one that's better than the rest?

In today's topic, we'll be discussing:

  • How formulating herbal medicine is a practice as nuanced as the development of herbalism itself
  • The ancient, modern, spiritual, and medical practices that all offer unique pathways to healing and their medicine making methodologies
  • The pros and cons of taking a standardized approach to medicine-making versus taking a more personal approach
  • The unique aspects that each tradition specializes in
  • How to identify the best medicine making practice for yourself

The Herbal Detox Myth26 Aug 202100:18:40

Detoxification felt like a big fad for a while, where like everyone was cleansing and detoxing and trying to purge a lot of things that shouldn't be in the body out of the body. And they turn to herbal medicines in order to assist in that process.

While it's great that folks are considering their health and wanting to make sure that their bodies are pure and clean and functioning properly, we do run into some issues with detoxification. So this is an important topic to discuss.

The Importance of Moistening Plants18 Aug 202100:36:07

Most herbs tend to be drying in nature. They're bitter or they're warming or they're astringent. The dynamic of dryness in terms of the state of our tissues or the state of someone's constitution is common. We live in a culture that is common for people to have an underlying state of dryness.

So I tell my students that it's best to learn and know and memorize and integrate all the herbs that are typically moistening, and especially what organ systems they are moistening for. After that, you can assume that most other herbs are drying.

In this week's blog post, I discuss why most herbs are drying, how to determine whether an herb is drying or moistening, and much more.

Terrain vs. Germ Theory10 Aug 202100:11:16

Why do we get sick? When we're speaking about getting sick from some sort of pathogen, do we get sick because there are pathogenic germs that get into our body and make us sick, or do we get sick because of the terrain of the body, the ecosystem of the body, that is creating an environment that is then hospitable to those germs? It's almost a "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" kind of question.

Addicted to Bitters04 Aug 202100:11:04

Bitters are a common category of herbal medicine that are universally used to support digestion. While bitters are amazing and incredible in all the many ways in which they support the digestive system, they're not always the most appropriate type of remedy for people to use. In our modern world where it seems like almost everyone has a digestive symptom of some sort, bitters are becoming significantly more and more popular and are commonly used by lay folk who aren't herbalists.

There is some danger there in terms of whether bitters are appropriate for certain people with a certain constitution to be taking, as well as whether someone can become dependent on bitters.

Willow Bark vs. Aspirin22 Jul 202100:20:31

It's common for folks to think about willow as an alternative to aspirin. Most people know that willow bark also contains salicylic acid, which is the main compound in aspirin. But if we think of willow just as an herbal form of aspirin, it can oftentimes lead to misuse of this plant, which can lead to possible adverse side effects if you give it to the wrong person.

But I also think that, contrary to popular belief, there are times where aspirin has its place. I have been adopting a little bit more of an open mind when it comes to healing and helping people. I believe that there are certain situations where an aspirin actually might be able to save a life.

Interview with Kami McBride13 Jul 202100:55:45

Herbal oil applied to the skin is an excellent form of self-care. Oils provide several benefits: there's the healing from the medicinal constituents of the herb, the affirmation that we're taking care of ourselves, and the self-healing power of physical touch. We need to overcome the incorrect notion that infused oils are for skincare or to look pretty or to take away wrinkles. We do need to keep in mind that when we use oils, we're absorbing things into our skin. That's why herb-based oils are better than petroleum-based oils.

This week's podcast guest is an expert in herbal oils. Kami McBride is the author of The Herbal Kitchen, and she's taught herbal medicine at several colleges. Over more than 30 years, Kami has helped thousands of families make the highest-quality herbal remedies to prevent illness, take care of common ailments, and protect their health naturally.

Herbal Support for ADD and ADHD06 Jul 202100:12:01

Using plants to address ADD and ADHD can be beneficial for children on so many different levels, not just helping them navigate our standard educational model, which isn't always suitable to all learning types, but also helping to keep these kids off of some of these stronger medications that they're put on and some of the detrimental side effects that they can have, not to mention helping parents navigate some of this territory.

Eating for Your Constitution30 Jun 202100:19:20

As Ayurveda has become popular, interest in eating according to your constitutional type has grown. Over the last few years we've seen this dynamic of eating and tailoring your diet to specifically suit your unique dosha

And while I think there are some great aspects to that, I also think there are a few risks in terms of how we approach food, how we approach eating, the state of our mind, how we think about our food, and how sometimes we can turn food into a stressor.

A few topics discussed in this episode are:

  • The Origins of the Ayurvedic Diet
  • Qualities of the Doshas
  • Enjoying Our Food
  • Listen to Your Body and the Seasons
  • A Real-Food Diet

How to Learn the Unwritten Herbs23 Jun 202100:20:32

A student from Africa asked some questions about how to start to fit herbs into our Western model of understanding them when that information isn't readily available. In Africa, there are lots of local medicinal plants that you can't look up in your typical materia medica reference book. But if you are studying Western herbalism, it's helpful to understand your plants in terms of their medicinal actions, their energetics, their organ system affinities, and so on. So where do you start? How do you figure that stuff out?

I've got a nice framework for how you can start to approach a medicinal plant that you don't know or that you can't look up and reference, and how to start to build your experiential knowledge and understanding of that medicinal plant.

Keeping Warm: Countering the Cold with Warming Herbs18 Dec 202500:48:42

There's something about winter that makes us want to bundle up and get warm. And while many of us do this with sweaters, a beanie, and thick wool socks, there's another critical way we stay warm: Through the herbs and food we eat.

In many herbal traditions, plants are often split into warming or cooling. A cooling herb might be great in summer, but it can leave you feeling off-balance during the cold winter months. That's why it's important to turn to warming herbs and spices that heat us up from the inside out. By doing this, we not only stay warmer, but we also come a little bit closer to living in harmony with nature's cycles.

In today's episode, you'll learn:

  • How living in harmony with the seasons connects us with nature

  • Why using warming herbs keeps us balanced, vital, and healthy during winter

  • The main actions, energetics, and affinities of warming herbs

  • How to use simple warming spices you already have at home

  • My favorite recipes for warming teas, herbal lattes, and even a few cocktails

Using Comfrey Safely19 May 202100:09:19

Comfrey is an important plant in traditional Western herbalism, as well as in modern herbalism, but there's a stigma around it too. People seem to be a bit scared of comfrey because of some research showing some of the constituents are potentially dangerous.

But this is an herb that has been used in Western herbalism both topically and, yes—believe it or not—internally as well for a really long time. Few people talk about the possible internal usage of comfrey.

But if you know more about its uses and characteristics, you can use it with greater confidence and competence.

The Role of Alcohol in Herbalism05 May 202100:13:01

As herbalists, we tend to rely pretty heavily on alcohol as one of our main ways for extracting and preserving the medicinal properties of plants. Herbal tinctures are one of the most commonly used forms of herbal medicine.

In modern herbalism, we tend to think of alcohol as great for dissolving herbal constituents and preserving things well. They last indefinitely if the percentage is higher than 30 percent. But what about some of the traditional perspectives of alcohol? Specifically, why do we refer to distilled alcohol as "spirits"?

Adverse Reactions to Herbs- What they are and how to avoid them21 Apr 202100:13:56

One of the biggest fears that we have as herbalists and as practitioners is that not only will our remedies potentially not work or heal the person that we're working with, but that they might actually do harm, that we might give someone a plant and it creates an issue for them in their body, or they have a really bad reaction to that herb. What are some of the different ways that that can happen or reasons why that can happen, and how can you best avoid that?

Understanding Herbs Astrologically29 Mar 202100:25:45

Astrology is a holistic system that sees not just the whole plant or the whole person but their connection to the whole cosmos, to the wholeness of nature. It's looking at the wholeness of life itself and the connections between the various expressions of life.

Astrological tools can help you to understand your plants more holistically and to be able to see that connection between their physical, their energetic, and their spiritual properties so that you can use the whole plant to heal the whole person. It's one of the most beautiful, amazing tools that we can have in our toolkit as herbalists to understand the essence of the remedies that we love.

An Interview with Jason Scott02 Mar 202100:59:01

On this week's podcast episode, I talk with my good friend Jason Scott. We talk at length about astrological herbalism, the doctrine of correspondences and the doctrine of signatures, and especially how Jason uses those doctrines in his work with mushrooms. We also discuss the best way to study and understand alchemical herbalism, one of the most common questions I receive from new students of alchemical herbalism, how to give proper reverence to plants, and much more.

In this episode, Robert and I have a deep discussion on the differences between chemistry and alchemy. Robert reveals how chemistry has had a profound impact on his study of alchemy and spagyrics, what his work as a chemist allowed him to do that other alchemists couldn't (and what he hopes future alchemists can do to build on his work), his answer to a question I get from a lot of new spagyricists, the topic of his next book, and much more.

Intention, Alchemy, and Medicine Making10 Feb 202100:18:25

When we're thinking about herbal medicine making, some of the topics that generally come up amongst herbalists are linear in their approach to how we prepare herbal medicine. It's not common that the dynamic of intention is discussed in standard herbal medicine making, but it's an important part that's discussed quite openly in the alchemical tradition. There are a couple ways that I think are important that we can follow to get ourselves in a good internal state that's conducive to making high-quality herbal medicine, especially in the context of preparing spagyrics.

Adaptogens and the Holistic Approach to Fatigue04 Dec 202500:56:07

Adaptogenic herbs are everywhere these days, offering promises of being the ultimate cure for fatigue and the secret to boundless energy. But here's the truth: adaptogens are one of the most misunderstood and misused herbal remedies out there these days.

When used incorrectly, they can backfire, potentially worsening fatigue instead of helping it. Many people fall into the trap of misusing these herbs, chasing quick fixes without addressing the underlying causes of their exhaustion. To truly address fatigue, you need to dig deeper to understand what's draining you, how adaptogens work, and where they fit into your recovery plan.

In today's episode you'll learn:

  • Three common causes of fatigue and how to fix them

  • How Russian scientists coined the term adaptogen, and how they originally used them

  • What adaptogens can—and cannot—do for your health

  • The five biggest myths about adaptogens and the truths that debunk them

  • The three categories of adaptogenic herbs and how to choose the one that best suits you

The Human Body: Machine or Ecosystem29 Dec 202000:15:30

Modern biomedicine tends to view the human body like a machine made up of multiple "gears." When something goes wrong, we simply need to fix the broken part. This mechanistic view of the body is significantly different from more traditional perspectives on our anatomy and physiology.

Central to the vitalist traditions of herbalism is the perspective that the body is a reflection of the natural world, a microcosm of nature- that it is an ecosystem.

The practice of true holistic herbalism is rooted in this perception of ecological physiology, which gives us a lens to directly match the energetics of the plants to the constitution of the person.

Masking Herbal Tastes02 Dec 202000:07:57

In this podcast, I want to share a little bit about some of the dynamics around the taste of herbs. In traditional systems of medicine, the way an herb tastes, whether it's bitter or pungent or astringent or sour or sweet, is a really strong indication of the medicinal properties of a plant. If we add a whole bunch of things to an herbal formula that changes its taste, is that going to change the medicinal impact of that formula?

How Herbalists Can Change With The Times24 Nov 202000:13:10

In this week's post, I want to talk about the state of the world right now how everything seems to be turning upside down. Everything is changing very rapidly in terms of the picture of human health and what's going on culturally and what's going on in nature. So how do we as herbalists change along with that? What are the things that we as herbalists can be doing to make sure that our practice of plant medicine is following the changes that are occurring?

Alchemy and Herbalism Part II- As Above, So Below: The Macrocosm and Microcosm in People and Plants17 Sep 202000:28:26

This week in Part II of the Alchemy and Herbalism blog series, I'm going to lay out for you what I see as the philosophical foundation of alchemy: the macrocosm and the microcosm.

I'll be covering an overview of the alchemical worldview and it profoundly shifts your perspective on people, plants, and your practice of herbalism.

We're hitting it at a high level this week, and next week I'll lay out how this philosophical foundation is practically applied in herbal alchemy, or spagyrics.

Alchemy and Herbalism Part I - The Science and Spirituality of Herbalism10 Sep 202000:21:00

Welcome to the first part of a four-part series discussing alchemy and herbalism. The tradition of alchemy is a tradition dear to my heart. I'm excited to share some of these teachings with you, because the alchemical tradition was the missing piece of the puzzle on my quest for a holistic system of herbal medicine. One of the main ways that it sparked something deep within me is the way that alchemy brings together science and spirituality. That's what this post covers.

Spagyrics: Ancient Medicine for the Modern World02 Sep 202000:20:57

There's something that I've been thinking a lot about lately. I've been looking at the state of the world and everything that's been going on politically and culturally. With the fires that we've been having out here on the West Coast, it feels like things are heating up—literally—on planet earth right now. I've been thinking about human beings' relationship to nature, our relationship to the earth, and the healing that is required of all of us right now, and I think the practice of herbal alchemy or spagyrics has great power and potency to bring healing to people.

The Client Intake and 5 Health Determinants26 Aug 202000:16:34

Root determinants are the big-picture, general things that we do each and every day that determine our relative state of health or lack of health. These are important things to know when working with clients, but sometimes they're overlooked by practitioners because they're considered basic and rudimentary and because there are so many other things to cover in a client intake.

So how do you do an intake in a way that makes sense . . . and so that you're not sitting there with a person all day long trying to get all the information that you need? How much time is generally recommended for a proper intake that accounts for the five root determinants of health? That's what we cover this week.

The Different Types of Herbal Tonics20 Aug 202000:18:38

The word "tonic" is frequently used in herbal medicine and in the alternative health world. We hear about health tonics, rejuvenative tonics, nutritive tonics, bitter tonics, and chi tonics. But what does "tonic" mean?

"Tonic" is a nebulous term and one of those terms in herbalism that can use some clarification to make sure that we're all on the same page when we say "tonic." What's the difference between a tonic from the perspective of physiomedicalism versus the way the word "tonic" is used in Ayurvedic medicine or Chinese medicine?

This week's post discusses the importance of knowing what we mean when we use certain terms in herbalism.

The Allergic Load19 Aug 202000:14:56

This week, we're going to talk about addressing allergies. This is something that a lot of people struggle with, especially in terms of seasonal allergies. We're in the early stages of summer here. This is the time when a lot of people get affected by a lot of the pollens in the air and dealing with upper respiratory stuff. So not only is it pertinent at this time, there's also the question of why we get allergies. What's the root cause? And why is it that sometimes we have an allergy when we're a kid, and then it goes away, but then it comes back later in life?

We're going to look at the underlying physiology behind allergies, why they can come and go, and what you can do on a foundational level to not just treat allergies with herbs. I'm not going into how to treat allergies with herbs so much as some of the fundamental things that you need to do to address the root cause of those allergies.
