| Astral Polarities & Organ Systems | 05 Mar 2025 | 00:34:50 | |
In medical astrology, astral polarities offer profound insights into the body's interconnected systems, revealing hidden relationships between organ functions and celestial archetypes. By studying opposing zodiac signs, we gain a deeper understanding of how the various parts of the body interact. This perspective aligns with holistic traditions like Ayurveda, which recognize the dynamic interplay between organs, emotions, and physiological processes. Each axis in astrology represents a functional system within the body rather than isolated structures. These polarities provide a framework for understanding health imbalances and how bodily systems influence one another.
In this episode, I'll delve into the intersection of astrology, herbalism, and organ systems.

| Keeping Warm: Countering the Cold with Warming Herbs | 18 Dec 2025 | 00:48:42 | |
There's something about winter that makes us want to bundle up and get warm. And while many of us do this with sweaters, a beanie, and thick wool socks, there's another critical way we stay warm: Through the herbs and food we eat. In many herbal traditions, plants are often split into warming or cooling. A cooling herb might be great in summer, but it can leave you feeling off-balance during the cold winter months. That's why it's important to turn to warming herbs and spices that heat us up from the inside out. By doing this, we not only stay warmer, but we also come a little bit closer to living in harmony with nature's cycles. In today's episode, you'll learn:

| The Danger of Herbal Fads | 28 Aug 2024 | 00:34:33 | |
If you walk into a hip smoothie shop or health food store, you'll undoubtedly be flooded with the newest "superfoods" and cure-all herbs. Like so many things in our modern culture, herbal medicine also has its own "fads," as it seems as if there's almost a new one in style each season. Although it may seem harmless at first and they may be a good gateway into the realm of herbal medicine, herbal fads may not necessarily be a good thing. Most of the time, they're promoted by big supplement companies looking to inflate their bottom line, even if the truth is a bit fudged to get there (or even flat-out lies!). By learning about the danger of herbal fads, you can become a more conscious consumer and herbalist and know how to navigate this sometimes confusing territory. In today's blog post you'll learn:

Have you ever felt anxious about giving herbs to someone who's already taking medications? Many herbalists feel hesitant to help people taking prescribed drugs because of concerns about herb-drug interactions. But how much do we really need to worry about this?
Herbs can impact how drugs are absorbed and metabolized, which can actually be helpful at times, but very risky at other times. By understanding how herbs and drugs interact, you can feel confident in providing your clients with the care they need, even if they're taking medications.

| Jesse Wolf Hardin Interview | 23 Jul 2024 | 01:04:06 | |
In this week's podcast, Sajah speaks with Jesse Wolfe Hardin, an herbalist and environmental renaissance man. The author of over 25 books, Jesse Wolf has taught anima life practices for decades and was the first to coin the term rewilding. Jesse is the co-founder of the International Good Medicine Confluence Gathering, the digital magazine for herbalist healers and folklorists, Plant Healer Quarterly, and the co-creator of the Revealing Hedge Guild Oracle Guide. Today's conversation takes place with Jesse in a remote river canyon, deeply nestled in the wild lands of New Mexico. In this heart-to-heart conversation, Jesse talks about how the Earth is intelligent, living, sentient, and is constantly evolving, adapting, and healing itself. In that process, it offers us a model for our own healing and evolution. When we connect with the Earth and work with its plants and rhythms, we tap into that deep intelligence and allow it to guide us on our path to wholeness. What's so powerful about herbal medicine is that it's not just about fixing a symptom or addressing a single ailment. It's about engaging in a relationship with the plants, with the land, and with ourselves. It's about recognizing that our health is interconnected with the health of the Earth and that by healing ourselves, we also contribute to the healing of the planet. As we explore and deepen our understanding of herbal medicine, we need to remember that it's not just about the plants themselves, but about the relationships we cultivate with them and how they help us to reconnect with the living Earth. It's about fostering a sense of reverence and gratitude for the natural world and allowing that to inspire us to live more harmoniously with it. In this way, herbal medicine becomes a spiritual practice, a way of life that fosters a deeper connection to the natural world and a greater sense of belonging. It reminds us that we are not separate from nature, but an integral part of it. In that recognition, we find a sense of purpose and a path to true wellness. In today's episode you'll learn:

| Meadowsweet: Not Just "Herbal Aspirin" | 17 Jul 2024 | 00:26:31 | |
Meadowsweet is often thought of as herbal aspirin. Even though it's no secret that its compounds were originally used to formulate and synthesize aspirin, can you really use it in the same way?
If you want to get the same results from Meadowsweet as aspirin, you would have to drink quarts of the tea, which is tough to do because it's incredibly bitter. Not only would you be feeling pretty nauseous by the end, but you would also only get the strength of a baby aspirin, if you're lucky!
Even though Meadowsweet contains aspirin-like compounds, they are not the same. Meadowsweet is an herb used for centuries, and although it has many traditional uses, its applications are more relevant than ever in our modern day.

| Interview with Margi Flint | 05 Jun 2024 | 01:04:22 | |
Margi Flint is a practicing herbalist, registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild, and herbal mentor from Marblehead, Massachusetts. Margi's wisdom spans over 20 years of labor coaching certification, polarity therapy, and Reiki, alongside 40-plus years of clinical herbal practice. She teaches at Pacific Rim College in Victoria, British Columbia, and has lectured at numerous prestigious herb schools, including Tufts Medical and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, as well as Boston University. She is also the author of one of my favorite and, in my opinion, one of the most useful herb books of all time, "The Practicing Herbalist: Meeting with Clients, Reading the Body," now in its fourth edition. She is most known for sharing the legacy of the late William LeSassier. The plants and her clients are her revered teachers. Margi is one of the most inspirational herbalists I know today and a true master in holistic evaluation and client intakes. For this episode of the Plant Path, I had the opportunity to connect with her, learn more about her expertise, and hear what's in store for us in her new book honoring the late William LeSassier. Being an herbalist means a lot of things: Working with people, plants, and being the bridge between the two. Although it might seem like studying botany is an important part of this process, the answer to this question might surprise you.

| Why I Wish What I Did Wasn't Called Medical Astrology | 14 Feb 2024 | 00:24:05 | |
Medical astrology is one of the most misunderstood assessment tools available in herbalism, with many flat out rejecting its usefulness or efficacy because of preconceived notions of astrology in general. Despite its spiritual or "woo-woo" implications, astrology has practical therapeutic applications. By learning how to use this tool correctly, you can pinpoint an imbalanced organ system, tissue state, or constitutional pattern and develop greater accuracy in your herbalism practice. In episode I talk about:

| Medical Astrology's Insights into Holistic Herbalism | 07 Feb 2024 | 00:15:45 | |
The term "holistic" is a key concept in today's holistic healthcare system. But what does it truly mean? According to the Evolutionary Herbalism model, a holistic practitioner is someone who integrates the physical, energetic, and spiritual properties of a plant with these aspects of a person to facilitate profound and transformative healing. Medical astrology stands out as one of the most powerful tools to craft a refined, precise, and effective system of holistic herbal medicine that addresses the entirety of an individual. | Regenerative Wildcrafting: An Interview with Scott Kloos | 31 Jan 2024 | 01:03:30 | |
Scott Kloos is an herbalist, wildcrafter, and medicine maker. He founded and acts as the managing director of the School of Forest Medicine and owns Cascadia Folk Medicine, which supplies high-quality, small-batch herbal extracts from the native plants of the Pacific Northwest region. He also co-founded the Elderberry School of Botanical Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and authored the book Pacific Northwest Medicinal Plants: Identify, Harvest, and Use 120 Wild Herbs for Health and Wellness.
I always think of Scott as a fellow plant brother and someone I really see eye-to-eye with. For this episode of the Plant Path, I had the opportunity to connect with him, hear more about his relationship to wildcrafting, and what's in store for all of us in his upcoming course, Relationships of Loving Reciprocity.
He's currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the final creation and launching of that course with some sweet perks. Check it out right here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/forestmedicine/relationships-of-loving-reciprocity

| Pathways to Herbal Mastery | 03 Jan 2024 | 01:01:09 | |
I know the beginning of the year is when a lot of us take a step back and look at our lives from a greater perspective. Perhaps we're looking back on the past year and thinking about what we'd like to change or do differently...
... Or we're looking forward and planning out how we want our lives to look and resolving to make it that way.
Hopefully as an herbalist, you're thinking about your plant path as well, and considering how you plan on taking your understanding of herbalism, people and plants to the next level so you can be a better practitioner.
The way I see it, there's so much to learn as an herbalist that it never really ends. The pathway to herbal mastery is to always be a lifelong student. But sometimes it can be hard to know how to get there or where we need to focus our studies and practice.
This very special audio was an issue of Materia Medica Monthly from a few years ago. But I think it's so relevant to herbalists around this time of year I wanted to share it with you too.

| Working with the Whole Plant | 15 Nov 2023 | 00:32:53 | |
As you begin your herbal exploration, you'll notice that there are a lot of books out there that either talk about a plant's spiritual or medicinal aspects–but rarely both. This separation of science and spirit mirrors the allopathic approach used in conventional medicine. The problem is that this separation doesn't exist!
The more I studied the alchemical perspective, the more I learned that an herb's physical and spiritual properties are connected. When you study herbs this way, you start to see them beyond what they treat, and into their core medicinal qualities instead so you can use the whole plant to treat the whole person.

| Anatomy of a Formula | 28 May 2025 | 00:33:17 | |
Have you been studying herbs for a while, but you still feel unsure about how to combine them into an effective formula? Or maybe you're newer to herbalism and ready to dive into the art and science of formulation? Formulation is one of my favorite parts of herbal medicine, so I'm excited to kick off a new series called The Anatomy of a Formula. I love the synergy that emerges when herbs are combined in intelligent, intentional ways—and the specificity you can achieve when formulating for a particular person. It's both powerful and fun. However, for budding herbalists, formulation can initially feel daunting and a little confusing. Without some kind of framework or guidance, many people end up just tossing a bunch of herbs into a bottle and hoping it works. That's not an ideal approach because you're essentially leaving your therapeutics to chance. Instead, approach formulation with strategy, intention, and precision, tailored to the individual you're working with. Here's what we'll cover in this post: • A brief history of formulation in North American herbalism • Formulation challenges and how to fix the problem • The foundations of herbal formulas: pairs and triplets • The anatomy of an effective formula

Have you ever noticed how stress can make your body ache, your heart beat increase, or upset your digestion? Or vice versa and you eat a food your intolerant too and you get edgy, irritable or brain foggy? This happens because our mental, emotional, and physical health are all connected. And sometimes there's something there that changes your life forever. For me, the principles of vitalism were one of the biggest revolutionary moments in my life, not only as an herbalist, but as a human being. While I'll share a bit more about the five ways vitalism transformed my life, they're also the ways it can transform yours too. This is more than just changing how we see the world around us, or even being more integrated with nature, but it's also about reaching new levels of self-understanding.

| Science and Spirituality of Herbalism | 30 Aug 2023 | 00:27:23 | |
Science and spirituality are often painted as opposing forces. When this philosophy makes it into herbalism, you get a big divide between herbalists.

| Alchemy and Herbalism Part IV- Illness as Initiation | 10 May 2023 | 00:29:14 | |
Alchemy provides a unique perspective on health and disease that differs from conventional medicine. According to this philosophy, periods of sickness and health are as natural as the changing of the seasons.
Alchemy views illness as an initiation. From this perspective, sickness provides you with the opportunity to heal underlying patterns and undergo transformation. One of the best forms of herbal remedies to help you with this process is spagyrics. Because these medicines work on the chemical, energetic, and spiritual levels, they correct health imbalances at their root and help you emerge more whole than before.

From clinical to spiritual perspectives, we don't just focus on what herbs are "good for," but rather who they are as intelligent beings, and how we can work with them to heal us physically and consciously evolve.
———————————— ABOUT SAJAH ———————————— Sajah Popham is the author of Evolutionary Herbalism and the founder of the School of Evolutionary Herbalism, where he trains herbalists in a holistic system of plant medicine that encompasses clinical Western herbalism, medical astrology, Ayurveda, and spagyric alchemy. His mission is to develop a comprehensive approach that balances the science and spirituality of plant medicine, focusing on using plants to heal and rejuvenate the body, clarify the mind, open the heart, and support the development of the soul. This is only achieved through understanding and working with the chemical, energetic, and spiritual properties of the plants. His teachings embody a heartfelt respect, honor and reverence for the vast intelligence of plants in a way that empowers us to look deeper into the nature of our medicines and ourselves. He lives on a homestead in the foothills of Mt. Baker Washington with his wife Whitney where he teaches, consults clients, and prepares spagyric herbal medicines.

| Elecampane: The Deep Breather | 30 Oct 2025 | 00:31:04 | |
