| Topical Treatment: A Clinical Herbalist's Guide | 30 Sep 2026 | 00:51:09 | |
Does the term "topical herbs" make you think of applying herbs to your skin? Perhaps creams, salves, or poultices come to mind. The thing is, application to the skin, while very important, is only one of many types of topical applications.
Any time an herb comes into direct contact with tissues, whether the skin or the mucous membranes of the respiratory or digestive tract, it is acting topically. This post is the first in a series where we'll break down the meaning and methods of topical medicine in order to redefine how topical herbal medicine can be used.

Has your life ever been changed by a plant? When I ask this question of a group of herbalists, most say yes. But if you're just taking your first steps on the plant path, your answer might be no, or not yet.

In this post, I'm getting personal, which I don't usually do, but I want to illustrate the principle of a plant changing a person's life by sharing my own story with Wood Betony (Stachys officinalis) and the profound impact this plant has had on my life.

One diagnosis may have many causes and manifest as a variety of tissue states, depending on the person. However, some conditions carry a regular, recognizable energetic and humoral pattern. Hyperthyroidism is a classic condition that fits this description. One of the best herbal remedies for hyperthyroidism is Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis). In this post, we'll explore hyperthyroidism, heat patterns, and how Lemon Balm can be an important part of the treatment protocol. Here's what you'll learn:

| The Danger of Herbal Fads | 22 Jul 2026 | 00:34:33 | |
If you walk into a hip smoothie shop or health food store, you'll undoubtedly be flooded with the newest "superfoods" and cure-all herbs. Like so many things in our modern culture, herbal medicine also has its own "fads," as it seems as if there's almost a new one in style each season. Although it may seem harmless at first and they may be a good gateway into the realm of herbal medicine, herbal fads may not necessarily be a good thing. Most of the time, they're promoted by big supplement companies looking to inflate their bottom line, even if the truth is a bit fudged to get there (or even flat-out lies!). By learning about the danger of herbal fads, you can become a more conscious consumer and herbalist and know how to navigate this sometimes confusing territory. In today's blog post you'll learn:

| Following the Herbal Harvest: An Interview with Ann Armbrecht | 22 Apr 2026 | 01:06:45 | |
What really goes into the herbal products we rely on every day? In this conversation, Sajah sits down with anthropologist, author, and founder of the Sustainable Herbs Initiative, Ann Armbrecht, to explore the hidden journey of herbs — from field to finished product — and the complex web of relationships, ethics, and decisions that shape their quality. Sajah and Ann discuss the gap between traditional herbal values and modern industry realities, and what it means to practice integrity in herbal medicine today. This is an invitation to look more deeply — to "see double" — and to connect with the people, plants, and places behind the medicine. Here's what you'll learn in this interview:

| The Seasonal Allergy Strategy Part 1 | 08 Apr 2026 | 00:31:58 | |
Spring has officially sprung.
The birds are chirping, the plants are waking up, and the earth is on the move again. It's a beautiful time of year—and here in the Pacific Northwest, we welcome the lifting of the cold, the retreat of the rain, and the chance to head back outside to enjoy nature's splendor and get our gardens growing.
But spring's return comes at a high cost for many due to seasonal allergies.
If you're one of the millions of people who suffer from seasonal allergies, stepping outside can bring so much discomfort and suffering that it hardly seems worth it. You might choose to stay inside, avoiding the warm, sunny days simply because your allergies make being outside unbearable.
In this episode, we're diving into the dynamics of seasonal allergies. There's a lot to cover, so this will be a two-part series.
You may just be looking for remedies—and we'll get there—but first, we need some context. Understanding the "why" behind seasonal allergies provides a broader perspective on what's happening and how to identify the root cause.
In Part One, we'll explore the background and context of seasonal allergies, including:
With this foundation in place, Part Two will cover the therapeutic strategy and approach. Let's dive right in!

| 🔥 The Fire Pattern in People & Plants | 01 Apr 2026 | 00:50:26 | |
We are now into Aries season — our first sign of the yearly zodiac. In honor of the astrological new year, we're kicking off a quarterly Element series here on the Plant Path, which we'll do at the equinoxes — in Aries and Libra, and at the solstices — in the signs of Cancer and Capricorn. Today, in honor of Aries and the recent equinox, we'll discuss the first Element: Fire, the spark of life, which governs vitality, transformation, and the movement of energy through people and plants. We'll explore how Fire expresses itself through humans and through plants, offering a deeper lens for understanding constitution, physiology, and plant energetics. Here's what you'll learn:

| The Zodiacal Study Strategy | 18 Mar 2026 | 00:46:06 | |
Have you ever felt overwhelmed trying to learn herbal medicine and astrology?
This is one of the biggest challenges I hear from people studying herbalism on its own… throw astrology on top of it, and it just seems like too much. They say, "I was already overwhelmed trying to learn how to become a great herbalist. And now, to practice this way, I have to learn the massive system of astrology too. I'm busy with my day job, family, home, and garden, and it's too much."
But it doesn't have to be that way! There is a strategic approach that allows you to study herbal medicine and astrology at the same time. The philosophical bases of both herbal medicine and astrology are, at their core, one and the same- for they are built off the same fundamental blueprint of nature.
When you study these fundamental principles and patterns of astrology and herbalism simultaneously, it enhances your learning of both systems, making it quicker to learn them and thus incorporate them into your work with people.
This is what I call the Zodiacal Study Strategy.
It is a model for study that you can incorporate into the time you have available—or rather the time you create—to optimize your learning process of both herbalism and astrology. It is built on the similarities between the philosophical foundations of holistic herbalism and astrology, or what I think of as the architecture of the zodiac.

| Four Herbs of the Sun: Warmth, Vitality, Heart & Spirit | 03 Mar 2026 | 00:48:46 | |
Join the FREE Astro-Herbalism Mini-Course that's happening right now: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/astro-herbalism-mini-course/ In medical astrology, the Sun represents the gravitational center of the psyche and of the body. Just as the planets orbit the Sun, so too does our physiology organize itself around a central core of vitality, expressed through the heart, the circulation of blood, and the distribution of warmth throughout our organism. When the solar principle is strong, we see resilience, clarity, steady immunity, and a sense of inner coherence. When it is weak, patterns of fatigue, coldness, poor circulation, and psychoemotional instability may emerge. In this episode, I'll explore four medicinal plants that are powerful expressions of the solar archetype. Through the lenses of heart, warmth, vitality, and spirit, we'll examine how Hawthorn, Angelica, Ashwagandha, and St. John's Wort restore the solar force within us, bridging alchemical philosophy with grounded clinical application. | Planetary Sympathy and Astrotherapeutics | 25 Feb 2026 | 00:33:08 | |
Most traditions of herbal medicine across the world use the fundamental principle of antipathetic medicine in their approach to therapeutics. But in the practice of alchemical medicine—based on Paracelsianism— and in astro-herbalism, another approach is commonly used: sympathetic medicine. In this episode, we'll explore some of the principles of sympathetic medicine, how it differs from the antipathetic approach, and how we can work with it to deepen our understanding of plant to planet correspondences.
Here's an overview of what you'll learn:
Warning: this is a slightly more advanced discussion relating to astro-herbalism and planetary correspondences in plants. If you're not familiar with this topic it might be a bit complex!

| Wild Indigo, Echinacea, & Garlic: A Classic BHP Antiseptic Triplet | 14 Jan 2026 | 00:39:07 | |
When we talk about "anti" herbs — antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial — it's easy to imagine plants acting like tiny soldiers fighting pathogens. But in this post, we're exploring a classic herbal triplet from the British Herbal Pharmacopeia that reveals something more profound: that herbs rarely just "kill the bug." Instead, they strengthen, mobilize, and clear heat and infection. Here's what you'll learn in this episode:

| The Ultimate Guide to the "Anti" Herbs | 07 Jan 2026 | 00:43:22 | |
Look at just about any materia medica, and you will see the word "anti" in front of many an herbal action. These are subtypes of the antimicrobial action, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, antiviral, antiparasitic, antiamoebic, and antimalarial.
When you see these words, it is easy to assume that the herbs they describe are like natural pharmaceuticals designed to "kill" pathogens. However, that framework can mislead you and sometimes lead to poor clinical choices.
In this article, we'll rethink the entire premise of "anti-herbs" and explore how they really work. Here's what you'll learn:

| Keeping Warm: Countering the Cold with Warming Herbs | 18 Dec 2025 | 00:48:42 | |
There's something about winter that makes us want to bundle up and get warm. And while many of us do this with sweaters, a beanie, and thick wool socks, there's another critical way we stay warm: Through the herbs and food we eat. In many herbal traditions, plants are often split into warming or cooling. A cooling herb might be great in summer, but it can leave you feeling off-balance during the cold winter months. That's why it's important to turn to warming herbs and spices that heat us up from the inside out. By doing this, we not only stay warmer, but we also come a little bit closer to living in harmony with nature's cycles. In today's episode, you'll learn:

| Burdock: The All-Purpose Alterative | 15 Oct 2025 | 00:35:55 | |
Sweet and grounding, Burdock is an Earthy plant with its wide leaves, deep taproots, and ability to both nourish weakness and cleanse excesses from the body. Just as it loves to grow near waste grounds, Burdock clears metabolic waste products and toxins from the fluids in your body to keep your skin glowing and healthy.
Since the health of the skin is merely a reflection of the health of your liver, blood, lymph, and digestion, focusing on topical solutions alone won't get you very far. By working on each of these organs on a deep level, you can find long-term relief for chronic skin conditions through Burdock.

Agrimony is the herb of paradox. On the one hand, it's described as a relaxant, and on the other hand, as an astringent. How does it contract and relax a tissue at the same time?! What do you do when you find conflicting information surrounding the herb you're studying?
Although these two aspects of Agrimony may seem contradictory at first, there's a way that you can study the herb that connects them to form a larger whole. By learning how to study herbs in this way, you gain the skillset to understand complex plants on a deeper level that unites their disparate parts to form a whole.
