Exploring the Beauty of the Wicklow Mountains: A Dublin Day Trip (Dublin Part 4)16 Jan 202100:42:24

On episode 38, Julie & Art take a day trip from Dublin Ireland to the nearby Wicklow Mountains. We conclude our overview of 10 things to do in this Irish capital city to help you get the most out of being Dublin Tourists.

Planning Your Dublin Itinerary

Dublin offers a tremendous amount of choices for tourists.  The city has museums, shopping, entertainment, churches, access to nature, and yes, pubs. We do recommend planning one to two key things to do on your daily itinerary. No matter your interests, Dublin surely provides many choices to entice your curiosity.

Travel Resources

We consulted Frommer's Dublin Day By Day travel guide for identifying specific attractions to include during our trip.  The book was helpful to identify walking tours, museums, as well as providing days and times that specific places are open to visit.  We recommend purchasing a book similar to this one when planning a longer trip.

This Dublin guide provides 19 Self-guided Tours, 39 Maps, and several day trips. You'll also find recommendations on the best live music and top kid attractions in the city.  It's a great resource to help you experience the best of Dublin in the smartest, most time-efficient way.

  • The best of Dublin in one, two, or three days
  • Thematic tours for every interest, schedule, and taste
  • Hundreds of evocative photos
  • Bulleted maps that show you how to go from place to place
  • Hotels, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife for all budgets
  • A tear-resistant foldout map-enclosed in a handy plastic wallet you can also use for tickets and souvenirs

10 Things To Do in Dublin Ireland

Adventures on the Road: Our Airstream Maiden Voyage Experience08 Aug 202000:46:36

On episode 27, Julie & Art disclose their RV decision and being the story of their Airstream maiden voyage.

SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEWSLETTER

This episode is a continuation of our California RV Show episode (Episode 9).  Highlights include the Airstream purchase, first-time RV travel apprehensions, and learning moments.  We also review our very first RV park experience at Oasis Las Vegas RV Resort.

Introducing Ty Arian (The Silver House) Our Airstream is a 2014 27-foot International Signature model.   We purchased from A to Z Motors in Winters, California with a superb buying experience provided by Vince Cardinale.  And given a strong Welsh family roots connection on Julie’s side, we named our silver beauty with an affectionate Welsh moniker.

First-time RV Travel Apprehensions

Being new to RV travel, there were a lot of things we didn’t know.  And we knew there were additional things we didn’t know that we didn’t know.  This was a recipe for a bit of a stressful first-time experience

Among our first-time RV travel apprehensions:

  • Hitching process – will the trailer fall off the ball?
  • Hookup process – will we know how to hook everything up to the trailer?
  • Sewer hookup – you can imagine, this could be quite the messy process. Would we succeed in keeping ourselves clean of muck?
  • Long-distance towing – could we handle this and what would our limits be in time and distance per day?
  • Backing up – as this process is backwards from normal with a trailer, will we be able to get the rig backed up properly?
  • Tire quality – we’ve seen the horror stories of “China bombs”. Will our tires hold up on the road?

Getting Ready For The Maiden Voyage

We did a number of things to prepare for our first trip:

  • Camping with friends in their RV before ever purchasing our own rig
  • Booking an overnighter at a permanently setup Airstream to feel out being in a travel trailer without a slide. We did this at Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton California (SP and Links)
  • Research, research, research
  • RV Show visits
  • Checklist development
  • Initial Outfitting of the Airstream: Bedding, towels, food storage, cleaning supplies, tool kit, connectors (surge protector, AC cords, water and sewer hoses, etc.)
  • RV Apps – we currently are using several including Allstays, Campendium, RV Life, RV Parky
  • Backup camera installation in the Airstream – an absolute confidence booster for us while towing the Airstream
  • Selecting a hitch. We landed on the Blue Ox and are very pleased with its performance.
  • YouTube videos on nearly every topic that these newbies didn’t understand
  • Tow vehicle. We actually bought our Ford F250 Diesel a few years before our travel trailer.  But knowing the truck would one day tow something (most probably an Airstream), we landed on this model and of course, selected silver (just in case).

Newbie RV Learning Moments

We’ve towed for about 2,000 miles as part of our newbie experience with trips to Utah and Pismo Beach to date.

The first thing we learned was that this was a real good decision.  Travelling in the Airstream feels like there is a piece of home with us during our travels.

We save money on food as we are preparing most meals in our trailer.

Additional learning moments:

  • Driving limits: We are comfortable at 4 to 5 hours maximum per day, which is about 240 to 300 miles. Towing a trailer is significantly more mentally taxing for us so we’ll take it slower and at shorter distances than our typical car road trips.
  • YouTube videos: We continue watching the experiences of others to keep learning – there’s a lot to know.
  • Make your own videos: When we purchased our Airstream at A to Z Motors, we filmed Vince Cardinale as he explained all of the features inside and outside our rig. Being able to re-watch these clips before our first trip (several months after our purchase), was immensely helpful in refreshing our memory of how to use our rig.
  • Route research. The app RV Life has proven useful to find roads that best for our specific rig.  Waze and Google Maps might steer you on a road that isn’t optimal for your RV rig.
  • Go slow. We’re travelling on average 55 to 60 miles per hour.  Slow, steady and safe.
  • Planning ahead for fuel stations. We research maps, via our RV apps, to find out where Truck stops are located on our routes to make sure we can fuel up at places where we can easily maneuver our rig
  • Fuel up when unhitched. When we arrive at a location, we’ll fill up the truck before our next hitching cycle.  This helps us avoid problematic fuel stops.
  • Checklists still need to be refined. We take these on each trip and are still finding opportunities to update these.  This process will probably take us a few more trips to get our lists fine-tuned for our situation.  Still, the checklists are helping us not forget important parts of the RV process.

Fun Facts

We have a few, but you have to listen to the episode for the details.

What does a visit to the Churchill War Rooms offer? Highlights

Let us take you through a few highlights to stoke your interest for a future visit.  We'll take you through the underground war planning area.  Our visit covers much of you will see.  Listen to hear about the cabinet meeting rooms, map room, and communications center.

In the Footsteps of Heroes: Exploring the Trenchard Museum at RAF Halton19 Apr 202000:52:32

On episode 19, Julie & Art visit the Trenchard Museum RAF Halton near Wendover England.

Trenchard Museum RAF Halton

On the grounds of the Royal Air Force Base of Halton Camp in Aylesbury England, the Trenchard Museum offers a collection of exhibits with a myriad of artifacts from the Trenchard Apprentice Program.  A visit here rewards you with views of aircraft, cockpits, aero engines, models and memorabilia which illustrate life, training and notable events in the aircraft apprentice history.

This visit was planned by Art to trace the steps of his dad, Bolesław Dobrucki, who arrived at RAF Halton from a Polish Refugee camp in the Middle East with several hundred very young Polish boys in 1943.

We discuss the exhibits on display at the Trenchard Museum and the museum archives.  Learn about the unique story of the Polish aircraft apprentices who trained at RAF Halton between 1943 through 1948.  We highlight this specific history and discuss the several exhibits at the museum that serve the memory of the young Polish apprentices who trained at this facility.

Survivors of War

The book, “Survivors of War: One Family's Struggle Through World War II” by Dan Dobrucki and Walerian Joseph Dobrucki proved to be a helpful resource that was used to identify this destination for our UK itinerary.

Virginia Cherrill

We discuss the role of Hollywood Actress Virginia Cherrill, aka Lady Jersey, as the Honorary Guardian of the Polish apprentices at RAF Halton during WWII.

The History of the Polish Aircraft Apprentices at RAF Stations Halton and Cranwell

While difficult to find, the book Młodociani Lotnicy: Historia Lotniczych Szkół Małoletnich Halton Cranwell Wielka Brytania (History of the Polish Aircraft Apprentices at RAF Stations Halton and Cranwell 1943-1948), is an invaluable resource to learn more about the band of several hundred Polish boys who apprenticed at RAF Halton.  This history was authored by Stefan Arkadiusz Petruswicz.

Restaurant and Foodie Highlights

Our food stop highlight during this trip is Rumsey's Chocolateria and Coffee Shop in Wendover.  This location offers the creations of master chocolatier Nigel Rumsey who has been creating an exquisite range of award-winning hand-made chocolates since 1991.  We had one of our most enjoyable lunch meals during our UK trip at this coffee shop.

Travel Resources

We consulted “DK Eyewitness Travel Guide Great Britain” for identifying specific attractions to include during our trip.  The book was helpful to identify walking tours, museums, as well as providing days and times that specific places are open to visit.  We recommend purchasing a book similar to this one when planning a longer trip.

We're seeking homes in London of one time silent screen actress Virginia Cherrill - aka Lady Jersey. This is the first of several episodes where we talk about our travels to the greater London area and nearby parts of England.

Osterley House and Park

In looking to trace the steps that Art's dad, Bolesław Dobrucki, travelled as a young Polish member training with the Royal Air Force in Britain, our first stop is Osterley House and Park.  Once the residence of the 9th Earl of Jersey, his wife Lady Jersey, had cared for a band of Polish boys from the RAF.  We went to see if Osterley House might have been one of the residences where the lads were entertained.

Read our Blog Post on Osterley House and Park

Richmond Palace

Our second stop was Richmond Palace.  This was another residence once occupied by Lord Jersey in the mid 1940s.  At this stop, the interior is not open to the public for viewing.  However, we get a glimpse of the exterior and learn about the centuries old property and its many royal occupants. This property was also noted as a place where Lady Jersey entertained her band of adopted Polish sons.  Art's dad was among these boys from the RAF school in Halton, England in the 1940s.

Virginia Cherrill

We also discuss the Hollywood Actress Virginia Cherill, who would marry the 9th Earl of Jersey to become Lady Jersey.  Her story is interwoven into the properties we visit on this episode.

Exploring Family Roots in East Los Angeles27 Jan 202000:40:35

On episode 13, Julie & Art travel the streets near downtown Los Angeles in search of the earliest homes where Julie's grandparents lived in the 1920s and 1930s.  They were the first folks on her dad's side of the family to move way out west to California.

In Search of 3 Early Family Residences

Having found records of the early family residences through census records and public documents, we drive the streets of Los Angeles to find, take photos, and walk by the three earliest homes inhabited by Julie's grandparents.  Pictures from this day of exploration can be found on our blog post recapping this visit: Exploring East L.A.

A Stunning Church

Among the family records Julie found, there was a baptismal certificate for her father when he was two years old.  We find the church in Los Angeles and are surprised by the artistic beauty of the church - Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

Tips For Exploring Your Family History

We also share a few tips for your consideration if you're interested in exploring early history of your family.

California RV Show30 Nov 201900:25:32

On episode 9 California RV Show Podcast, Julie & Art explore travel trailers at the 2019 California RV Show in Fontana, California.  Listen as we search for a no-slide travel trailer for our future camping adventures.

Airstream Hunting at the California RV Show

First, we plan an essential stop for a no-slide trailer at the Airstream display.  Perhaps the most iconic no-slide trailers on the market, we peek in to see what’s in store for aluminum dreamers in 2020.

Lance 2075 Debut

Rumors of a no-slide model from Lance were indeed confirmed at the show.  You’ll catch some of the earliest impressions of the Lance 2075 on this podcast.  The Lance 2075 is scheduled for release in early 2020.  Because we are leaning heavily toward a no-slide trailer, this new model fills a niche between lower-priced (and lower quality) models and the higher-priced Airstreams.  Welcome the Goldilocks model of no slide units.

The new Lance 2075 is a viable competitor to Airstreams for folks looking for an Airstream-like floorplan.

Since we visited the show, the Lance website has been updated with highlights of this new trailer: https://www.lancecamper.com/travel-trailers/2075/

Stay tuned in upcoming episodes to see if we get either of these trailers for our future camping adventures.

Visiting Barry Island - A Day Trip Adventure to the Seaside Town in Wales16 Nov 201900:25:49
Barry Island Introduction

Welcome to episode 8 - our Barry Island podcast. We made an afternoon excursion to the seaside town of Barry Island while staying in Cardiff, Wales.

Barry Island is a popular seaside resort that has been a popular destination for tourists since the 19th century. This seaside town has something for everyone, from its iconic amusement park to its golden beaches.

We discuss our afternoon in Barry Island, relaxing on the edge of the Bristol Channel, and tips to help you plan a visit to Barry Island. So, join us as we explore Barry Island in Wales.

One way of enhancing your visit to any destination is to plan an excursion to a nearby location.  As a result, Barry Island became one of our afternoon trips out of Cardiff.

Barry Island Highlights

On Barry Island, we had a wonderful time! The carnival rides at Barry Island's Pleasure Park provided a festive atmosphere. We explored the Barry Island Visitor Center to get a better understanding of the local history and culture (or lack thereof), and strolled along Whitmore Bay Beach. We also took some time to relax at Friars Point and watched kayakers make their way in the Bristol Channel.

This was another trip influenced by Julie’s genealogy research upon tracing family tree branches to Glamorgan. We enjoyed walking on the land once home to our ancestors - hundreds of years ago.

Barry Island - Where To Stay

If you visit Barry Island, the best place to stay is Gail's Guest House. It's rated 9 out of 10 stars on Expedia.

Lovely stay , really helpful , very clean place room lovely recommend to anyone. Also breakfast was really good .

Our Visit to Cardiff Castle

We have more travel adventures on this episode - Cardiff Castle Podcast, with highlights from our visit to the legendary castle.  We also share a few fun facts and travel tips in our episode that you’ll want to consider on your visit to this castle.

About Cardiff Castle

On this Cardiff Castle Podcast, we introduce you to one of Wales’ leading heritage attractions.  This castle, a site of international significance, is located in the heart of the country's capital.  The walls of the castle and its fairytale towers contain wonders of history that span nearly 2,000 years.

Did you know that Wales is known as the castle capital of the world? It holds more than 4000 castles. That makes for more castles per square mile than anywhere else in Europe. And the capital city of Cardiff is famous for having more castles than any other city in the world.

As Cardiff Castle stood tall and proud in the heart of the city center, it became a must-stop on our visit.

Cardiff Castle is a treasure trove of history that dates back over two thousand years! Built around 55 AD, this former Roman fort was located at the edge of a legion led by Julius Frontinus during his conquest of the Silures - the warriors of South Wales. It's a wonderful place to immerse yourself in 2000+ years of history.

Highlights of our Cardiff Castle Visit

Our two-hour tour of Cardiff Castle included viewing most of the grounds and some of the castle rooms.

Inside was an amazing history spanning the Roman era through the castle’s place to safeguard Cardiff residents during WWII.

Julie explored links to her family lineage as we read about the prior inhabitants of the castle.  Yes, William Herbert, a branch on Julie’s family tree, is connected to this castle.

Outside, we made our way past a moot and up a large mound to the castle’s defensive keep.

Optional tours include:

Clock Tower Tours: Make your way up the spiral staircase as you ascend perhaps the most recognizable landmark in Cardiff

Film Location Tour: Learn more about the exceptional grounds which have been the backdrop for BBC hit TV shows, including Doctor Who, Sherlock, and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Connoisseur Tour: This exclusive visit gives a behind-the-scenes look into the Castle’s exquisite decoration and the influential personalities that transformed the Castle in the nineteenth century. Plus, a visit to the Clock Tower is included.

We used TripAdvisor to identify attractions to see once we had our short list of cities identified for this UK trip.  We selected Cardiff to be our hub in Wales.  That would make it easy to get to several places in Wales, including Raglan, Barry Island, and key attractions we selected in Cardiff.

We leveraged “DK Eyewitness Travel Guide Great Britain” to identify specific attractions during our trip.  The book helped to identify walking tours and museums and times when particular places are open to visitors.  We recommend purchasing a book similar to this one when planning a more extended trip.

Planning Our Epic UK Adventure to Discover Family Roots25 Aug 201900:27:06

Episode 2 Show Notes: Getting ready to visit Wales and England

Planning Our UK Trip

This episode discusses planning our UK trip, including stops in England and Wales.  Our lengthier trips like this always begin with assessing the budget.  This helps us to plan trips that work with our financial situation.

Family Research Guides Our Itinerary

Julie has been actively doing genealogy research on her family.  This sparked an interest in visiting places where her family emigrated to the United States.  This was our initial plan, as Sweden is one place with still-living relatives.  We considered Stockholm and Sodra Lian during our early planning.

However, having recently completed an Ancestry DNA kit, Julie was surprised to see a large percentage of ancestry from the United Kingdom.  This sparked new interest as she traced her lineage to the Ragland clan in Raglan, Wales, where there is a present-day castle ruin.  She decided this would be an excellent place to visit.

Deciding To Visit The United Kingdom

Our planning shifted to the United Kingdom.  Julie’s lineage came from Wales (Raglan, Llantwit Major, Penarth, Barry) and England (Watchet, Somerset), which are places around the general area of the Bristol Channel.  Julie tracing her family tree in that part of the world to the 1400s gave us an outline of places to consider for our visit.

Our planning timeline for lengthy trips like this usually begins around eight months in advance.  We discuss why planning is essential when traveling to popular destinations.

Pausing For Brexit

But then, our trip planning hit the pause button due to Brexit.  We weren't sure how this political situation might impact travel.  We watched the news and read the newspapers to avoid a condition resulting in social unrest.  Ultimately, we decided to venture forward with our UK travel plans regardless, as no Brexit solution was found three months before our calendar showed our tentative UK trip.

Art's Family History Adds More Stops On Our Itinerary

Art’s dad spent five years (1943-1948) in England during World War II upon leaving a Polish refugee camp in Palestine.  Adding the English footsteps of Art’s dad to the itinerary would add stops in London (for Osterley Park and Richmond Palace, where Art’s dad was invited by Lady Jersey, actress Virginia Cherrill, to spend holiday time), Halton and the Trenchard Museum, and Liverpool.

An itinerary influenced by tracing family lineage would keep us from visiting Scotland, Ireland, and Poland – places on our radar at the early stages of planning this trip.  A trip that takes you to particular places will likely cause you to leave out many otherwise popular tourist destinations.

Art doesn’t get to include his bucket list item of attending an English Premier League game on this trip.

Our Travel Planning Resources For This Trip

We used TripAdvisor to identify attractions to see once we had our short list of cities identified for this UK trip.  We selected Cardiff to be our hub in Wales.  That would make it easy to get to several places in Wales, including Raglan, Barry Island, and key attractions we selected in Cardiff.

We leveraged “DK Eyewitness Travel Guide Great Britain” to identify specific attractions during our trip.  The book helped to identify walking tours and museums and times when particular places are open to visitors.  We recommend purchasing a book similar to this one when planning a more extended trip.

The book, “Survivors of War: One Family's Struggle Through World War II” by Dan Dobrucki and Walerian Joseph Dobrucki proved to be another helpful resource for planning this personal family history journey.

Our DIY Travel Approach

Because our UK trip included particular places, planning the trip ourselves versus a travel agent offered us the best approach.

This episode sets the stage and context for the upcoming UK episodes, where we’ll talk specifically about the places we visited.  Our next episode will focus on Cardiff City Center.

Where would a trip to trace your family history take you?  Consider tracing your family history to develop a personally fulfilling travel itinerary.

We hope to see you at the places where we go. Julie & Art

The Places Where We Go - Introducing A New Travel Podcast to Inspire Your Wanderlust11 Aug 201900:16:23

Introducing The Places Where We Go Podcast on this inaugural episode 1.

Introducing The Places Where We Go Podcast

And our podcast is born. Our journey unfolds here.  We’re always looking for a bit of an adventure. As we say in our podcast intro,  Sometimes we travel far. Sometimes, we explore the places in our local backyard. We’ll share highlights and top tips from our travels wherever we go. We hope you’ll bookmark us to help us plan your future travel adventures.

Julie & Art – Your Hosts

We're two ordinary people with regular lives. We have jobs, watch grandkids, and have typical family obligations. But we always find time to travel, whether local or more exotic travel adventures.

Art – My rearview mirror includes an extended residency in corporate America. My professional work experience covered insurance underwriting, marketing, and corporate education.  With a degree in Economics and an M.B.A., they even let me run a Data and Analytics department.  There’s been shiny trophies and awards to put on a shelf. Most importantly, that experience helped to fund our past and future travels.

I’m also a lifelong musician – often found on a piano or organ bench and standing behind keyboards in rock and roll settings. My keyboard work is featured on the album “All We Are” by Willard Overstreet and The Highborn Kinsmen.  My solo piano albums get streams; I’m thankful for the listeners.  And my original music finds its way as the soundtrack to our YouTube videos on our channel, The Places Where We Go.

Julie - Mother of three children. All our grown children are involved in the music industry – playing, performing, and even building instruments. These days, when we’re not traveling, Julie is taking care of our grandkids. They’re the best.

Our packing expert extraordinaire, Julie, focuses on our future travel opportunities. You’ll find her often in our Twitter and Instagram posts most days as we share our past travel adventures.
