Avoiding the Social Media Game! Photography as a Means to Achieving Happiness with @lyndonswildphotos
17 Jun 2024
01:07:06
Lyndon Norman (@lyndonswildphotos) is a wildlife and nature photographer from Alberta, Canada. She has a genuine passion for ethical wildlife and nature photography, and prioritizes unique perspectives and the safety of animals.
Social media, we all know, is a mess. Anxiety, harmful comparison, grinding until we burnout, feeling like we need to feed the machine. Sometimes we may find ourselves wondering why we started our photography journey in the first place. Thankfully in this episode with Lyndon, we talk about practicing photography simply in the pursuit of happiness rather than achievement. We also describe ways to fulfill our need to create art without worrying about content metrics, insights, and performance constantly.
Expect to learn how to get back to your "why" for photography, how to realize that "more" isn't always better than "enough", why you shouldn't be glued to your social media insights, and how to ensure you're making photos that you love and not what just feeds the algorithm.

The Art of “No”, Revenge, & Salvaging Professional Relationships
04 Nov 2022
01:13:13
No guest in today's episode. Aaron and I sit down to talk about being authentic with people in your dealings and especially emphasize the importance of saying "no" as opposed to trying to please everybody. We also talk about where the urge to get revenge on someone who has wronged you comes from and ultimately if the amount of time and energy needed to bring someone down is worth it in the end. Lastly, we talk about how to move forwards in communications where each party sees the path or causes of the current conflict or issue from totally different perspectives.

Forrest also tells us all about how he approaches aerial photography and what he's looking for while flying in the sky. Wildlife Reels, Digging into Social Media Metrics, & Happiness as a State of Being with @marysmark
16 Sep 2022
01:06:33
Mary Parkhill (@marysmark) is a weekend warrior photographer who has experienced considerable quantitative social media audience growth in a short amount of time mostly in part due to her incredible wildlife reels and videos of animal behaviour in Juneau, Alaska. In this interview we dive into her work life as a veteran marketing consultant and ask questions that see marketing intuition support some excellent concepts and mentality for approaching photography and your own personal journey. We get the scoop on the wildlife scene in Alaska and what it's like living there, as Mary does for the summers. We explore the importance of doubling down on what's working on your social media pages if growing your accounts are important to you, even if for the short term it may go against what you'd like to be doing. The idea is that short term pain may equal long term gain where you will have the audience size to make a go at photography in the way you want. Lastly, we talk about making happiness a state of being and something you can decide to make for yourself, as opposed for a target in the future that you're aiming to hit.
Aaron and Seth return after a couple episodes apart to talk about their opinions on the mass migration to VERO from Instagram, how freeing it is to be vulnerable and honest with yourself, and the importance of self-discipline.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @csieb_captures with her stunning long exposure shot of a Great Blue Heron anticipating and waiting calmly beside a fast flowing waterfall. These birds are masters of patience and seizing opportunity. If you're listening on Spotify you're able to see her image. Gerry's principles and mindset are completely in sync with what we like to vouch for on the podcast so we knew he'd be a great guest to have on.
In this episode we talk about how to avoid getting stuck, and why taking action is always the best step when "manifesting" rather than sitting and waiting for something to happen. We also talk about how to get to a place where we're constantly thinking about how we can add value as opposed to what there is to gain from a situation. Lastly, among other things, we discuss what real life is compared to digital life and how at some point digital life will become integrated into reality.

We talk about what it means to get into a "flow state" and how it applies to photography. Lastly we visit how important it is to get used to being in uncomfortable positions. If we can train ourselves to get comfortable being uncomfortable, then we better prepare ourselves to handle adverse situations.
An Interview with Instagram, Preemptive Measures with Clients, & The Importance of People Skills
15 Jul 2022
00:57:49
Today Aaron and I run a mock interview with Instagram from the perspective of a new photographer looking to join the platform amongst a fury of complaints and woes. We get into the importance of having a discussion with your client before a shoot and encouraging them to share directly with you what it is they're hoping to receive as deliverables. Lastly, we revisit the importance of developing your people skills. Businesses and brands like to hire individuals that are easy to work with, not necessarily those who are the most skilled. We define what "easy to work with" actually means.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @spencerlee808 with his beautiful shot of a turtle softly floating through the clear blue water off the coast of Hawaii! YWe love the use of negative space and those tasty sun rays poking through the top of the image. Congrats Spencer! If you're not using Spotify, you can now view #TPMartwork features on our Instagram profile under the "TPMartwork" highlight icon. This story is a huge testament to fighting through "no's", generating opportunities for yourself, meticulously planning, and digging down deep to make sure you execute.
Intermittent Fasting, What Kids Can Teach Us, & Does Social Media Make Reality Less Impressive?
01 Jul 2022
01:05:28
Today Aaron and I talk about intermittent fasting and the wellness ideas behind it. We talk about the dangers of filters and the quest for perfection in images, and if eventually social media will make reality unimpressive. Lastly, we return to the idea that kids can teach us so much. Their brains turn complex thoughts into simple expression and that's something we can re-apply as adults.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @jpegsbyjerry with this beautiful shot of mountains in Sedona! We found his photo to have great colour balance and a really tasteful amount of contrast. Congrats Jerry! Exploding into the Wildlife Photography Scene with @tiffanytaxis
24 Jun 2022
00:49:54
In this episode, Aaron and I are joined by Tiffany Taxis (@tiffanytaxis) , a wildlife photographer and another Olympus shooter living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Tiffany describes how her first art fair went and the criteria that went into selecting which pieces of artwork to exhibit. We also talk about putting yourself out there and establishing connections within the local photography community when you find yourself in a new part of the country.
Aaron and I both agree that Tiffany's wildlife photography is one of the most explosive in quality that we've ever seen. If you scroll back on her instagram grid, one minute she has a typical looking grid, the next polar bears, bobcats, and coyotes are staring you in the face with a tremendous and thoughtful burst of artistic flare. We both admire her work ethic and talent.
In this episode Aaron and I receive a detailed email from listener Aaron Haley (@aaron_michael_productions) about how he implemented many of the concepts talked about on the podcast and created major success for himself, ultimately landing a gig doing photo and video for a NASCAR driver. In this episode we break down his email, what he did right, and revisit many of the show's topics over the years.

Aaron breaks down his most recent experience shooting for a travelling van company and his recap of the event is filled with useful information and lessons that we want listeners to use when working on commercial gigs. It's always better to learn from other people's mistakes than your own.

How to Find New & Exciting Things to Shoot Locally
10 Jun 2022
00:44:40
In this episode we tackle a question and topic from a listener of the show regarding how get excited and motivated to get out and shoot subjects in your local that may not be as thrilling as places like Yellowstone or Iceland. We dive into the importance of creating a photograph rather than simply using a gorgeous scene as a crutch. Lastly, we talk about the amount of genres of photography available to try and experiment with in places where location doesn't hinder your ability to capture content.
Big shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @likelytowander with her awesome shot of a red Summer Tanager chowing on a dragonfly! This is a photo where her patience allowed her to catch the animal performing an interesting act. The animal's behaviour makes the photo, not the subject itself. If you're listening on Spotify you're able to see her image. Defining Your Own Style of Photography and Editing with @britt.bosse
03 Jun 2022
00:59:56
In this episode, Aaron and I are joined by Britt Bosse (@britt.bosse) , an animal and wildlife photographer who also happens to be Aaron's frequent shooting buddy on the east coast of the US. In the first half of this episode we hear about Britt's vegan lifestyle. We found this was an important topic to talk about because it stirs up controversy and we want listeners to be exposed to all kinds of thoughts and opinions. We want to help redesign a world that both supports and challenges beliefs we may have and avoid living in an echo chamber of polarization.
Britt's editing skills and style is unmatched. Aaron and I have yet to find someone who edits their photos anything like Britt does. Check out her Instagram or 500px to see what we're talking about. Notice in the episode how many different sources she is able to name off the cuff of where she was able to learn her editing techniques that she vouches helped form her stylistic approach.
Empathy and Having the Best Relationship With Yourself
27 May 2022
00:58:03
Today is a heavy episode. We start off the episode speaking on the tragedy that occurred in Uvalde, Texas where a school shooter murdered 19 innocent children and 2 adults. We share our thoughts surrounding this horrible and all too common tragedy.
We transition the conversation into making room for empathy and reminding everyone to practice self care. We also talk about how everything in life is relationships, and that we need to be constantly learning and teaching the best ways to have healthy interactions.
There is no #TPMartwork for today's episode as it didn't feel right given the heavy content.

Do Non-Photographers Need to Know The Effort that Went into Your Photos?
13 May 2022
00:53:01
Our Instagram page for the podcast has officially been launched so go ahead and check it out and give @thephotographermindset a follow!
Today's episode features a discussion on whether or not it's important for non-photographers or your clients to know the level of effort that went into your images or deliverables. Aaron and I get into some more ideas about the ego/validation, how a photographer in any genre can find a creative angle to make money with their craft, and how you can maximize one opportunity with multiple companies or brands.

Whether it's with the TPM group, another squad, or something you organize yourself, we encourage everyone to seek out that like minded connection and build a team of people who you click with. It's life changing.

In this episode, Aaron and I are joined by photographer and whale watching guide Slater Moore (@slatermoorephotography). In this episode we hear about Slater's journey into photographing whales and how he turned his passion of whale watching into a full time gig. Slater reveals that at one point during covid he was ready to put down his camera entirely. Lastly, we get an in depth view into the world of whales, something Aaron and I know little about.

Lastly, we discuss how the relationship we have with other photographers on social media is slightly competitive in nature.

In this episode we hear about Josh's journey into Youtube and what goes into making high quality, consistent content that performs well on Youtube. This episode with Josh is another advocation for diversifying across social media platforms instead of putting all your eggs into the Instagram basket. We also talk about the difference between people who talk about doing things vs those who actually take action and do them.

Picking social media platforms that play to your strengths
How consistency can be more important than quality

"The Art of Perseverance" with former MLB player Adam Greenberg
21 Jan 2022
01:48:24
In this episode, Aaron and I are joined by former MLB player, author, motivational speaker, and entrepreneur Adam Greenberg. Adam embodies the word perseverance. After dedicating and sacrificing most of his life to the game of baseball, Adam reached the pinnacle of his athletic career and was called up to play for the Chicago Cubs in the MLB. Adam's very first pitch in his MLB debut saw him receive a 91 mile-an-hour fastball to the back of the head, changing his life forever. He is one of two players in history to have an at bat without ever taking the field.
After 7 years of consistent grind and hustle, Adam clawed his way back to the major league and signed a one-day contract with the Miami Marlins so he could have another chance in the batter's box. Adam views that pitch to the head as a gift. In one of the worst but also greatest moments of his life, his injury and experience forged him into the leader and man he is today. When asked he says he wouldn't do it over any other way.
In this episode we talk about my recent experience going from DSLR to mirrorless. We talk about how efficient it can be to customize your buttons and functions on your camera so that you can work more quickly and seamlessly in the field. We also chat briefly about what camera companies are looking for when looking to endorse photographers in 2022.

Shoutout to this week's #TPMartwork feature @tylerlidwell with his epic photo of snow-fallen desert! Now that's something you don't see everyday. It literally looks like a nuclear wasteland after editing which we thought was pretty damn cool.
In this episode we take our first listener question live on the show. Thanks to our new RODE Caster Pro recording interfaces, if you record a voice message of a question or topic and send it to either Aaron or I (Seth) via Instagram DM, you'll have the ability to hear us talk it out live on an episode. So be sure to send us some of your thoughts/questions to discuss!
In this episode we navigate how to get out of our own way as creators and how to stop overcomplicating certain situations in our lives. We sometimes fail to realize that we make getting where we want to be a lot harder by doing things that are self sabotaging. We also briefly discuss where we see social media heading in 2022, specifically Instagram.
