In this conversation, Cynthia and Tamara delve into the intricate relationship between constellation work and body image issues. Tamara explains the concept of constellation work, likening it to a theatrical play where participants embody family dynamics.

Cynthia and Tamara explore how body image concerns often stem from deeper emotional patterns, including trans-generational trauma and societal pressures. The discussion highlights the importance of understanding these underlying issues to foster healing and self-acceptance.

Tamara shares insights from her practice, emphasizing that many body image struggles are not about the physical body but rather about unresolved emotional conflicts. The conversation concludes with reflections on personal recovery journeys and the role of control in shaping body image perceptions.

In this conversation, Cynthia and Tamara explore the complex relationship women have with their bodies, emphasizing the journey from body image fixation to self-love and authenticity. They discuss the importance of befriending one's body, and the necessity of addressing underlying emotional pain.

Takeaways:

  • Constellation work is an experiential process that reveals family dynamics. Trans-generational trauma can influence current body image concerns.
  • Body image issues often stem from deeper emotional patterns and so healing involves understanding and addressing underlying emotional conflicts.
  • Control issues are common in body image struggles.
  • Many women feel societal pressure regarding their appearance. Self-worth is often tied to external validation and appearance.
  • Constellation work can help untie systemic knots related to body image.
  • Recovery journeys are unique and require self-compassion. Body image is often a symptom of deeper emotional issues.
  • Self-love begins with befriending your body, but it’s normal to have days when you don't like your body.
  • The journey to self-acceptance is ongoing and requires patience.
  • Societal standards of beauty can distort our self-perception.
  • Education about body diversity can empower women.
  • Authenticity is more fulfilling than the pursuit of happiness.
  • Navigating uncomfortable emotions is part of the healing process.
  • We are the first generation with the resources to address these issues.

Signs You are Getting Closer to a Period12 Jan 202300:30:48

It can be so confusing navigating period recovery, especially when it comes to figuring out if you are getting closer. This episode is not in place of any medical advice; it's to become aware of signs and symptoms.  I am giving some of my tips on things to be aware of the signs and symptoms and learn our bodies of the steps for recovery. Signs and symptoms come and go and could look different for everyone.

I hope you find this episode helpful!

Cynthia

Listen in to learn more:

  • [08:01] Let’s talk CM. All bodies are different; you might see periods of cervical mucus, periods of dryness, consistency changes, or the like. These are all things you can’t control - the color, the consistency, etc. - but you can control the things that affect those things in particular.
  • [16:11] Resolving Digestive Issues. Constipation is just your body’s way of conserving the energy within your body for the more essential thing such as your heartbeat, your brain’s functioning, your lungs breathing, etc.
  • [27:52] All loss is gain; you may not see it right now, but with the right context and capacity, things will eventually improve and turn more pleasant.

Will I Ever Like My Body?07 Aug 202400:49:38

In this conversation, Cynthia and Caitie discuss body image and the challenges that come with it, particularly during the summer season. They emphasize the importance of working towards healing for your overall well-being. They also explore the normalization of body image struggles and the need to redefine what is considered normal. The conversation touches on topics such as bathing suits, social events, and the vulnerability of exposing one's body. They encourage listeners to prioritize their body image healing journey and not delay it based on external factors. In this conversation, Caitie and Cynthia address the normalization of the beach body concept and the pressure to be thin during the summer. They emphasize the need for support and the benefits of body image healing, including improved mental and physical health. They also discuss the role of somatic experiences in collaborating with the body and processing emotions. The conversation concludes with a reminder to take baby steps and approach the healing journey with childlike curiosity.

Takeaways

  • Body image issues can consume a significant amount of mental space and impact daily life.

  • It is important to prioritize body image healing and not delay it based on external factors or seasons.

  • The normalization of the beach body concept and societal pressure to be thin during the summer can make body image healing challenging.
  • Approach the healing journey with childlike curiosity and take baby steps towards a healthier relationship with your body.

Have you been eating more, resting more, doing all the “right” things for period recovery and still feel anxious, stuck, or mentally exhausted?

You’re not crazy. And you’re not alone.

In this episode of The Period Recovery Podcast, Cynthia Donovan, registered dietitian and period recovery expert, speaks directly to the woman who feels like she traded one obsession for another  from food and exercise to constant overthinking about getting her period back.

We explore:

  • How anxiety, overthinking, and guilt are linked to your nervous system
  • The difference between intuition and old programming
  • Simple nervous system tools to help you get out of your head and back into your body

The 5 Biggest Myths in Hypothalamic Amenorrhea27 Jun 202400:33:10

In this solo podcast episode, Cynthia discusses the five biggest myths and misconceptions surrounding hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) or missing periods. She starts by addressing the mainstream medical approach to HA, which often involves prescribing birth control pills. Cynthia emphasizes that her approach as a registered dietitian is different and aims to provide better information for making informed decisions. She also highlights that HA is a global issue and can affect individuals of all shapes and sizes. Cynthia then explores the misconception that HA is often misdiagnosed as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and the importance of asking the right questions to differentiate between the two conditions. She also addresses the misconception that getting your period back is only important for fertility, when in fact it has significant implications for overall health, including heart disease and osteoporosis. Cynthia also discusses the misconception that you don't need to gain weight or make further changes if you've already made some progress in recovering from HA. Lastly, she emphasizes the importance of seeking support and not giving up if you've tried various approaches and haven't seen progress in getting your period back.

Takeaways

  • The mainstream medical approach to hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) often involves prescribing birth control pills, but there are alternative approaches that focus on better information and individualized care.
  • HA is a global issue that can affect individuals of all shapes and sizes, not just those with low BMI or specific body types.
  • It is important to ask the right questions and differentiate between HA and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
  • Getting your period back is not just important for fertility, but also for overall health, including reducing the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis.
  • If you've already made some progress in recovering from HA, it may be necessary to make further changes, including weight gain, to fully restore your menstrual cycle.
  • Seeking support and not giving up are crucial if you've tried various approaches and haven't seen progress in getting your period back.

Fuel, Freedom, and 20 More Points: How Sophie Got Her Life (and Period) Back21 Aug 202500:40:19

Maintaining personal health can often feel like a secondary priority, especially if you have a physically demanding job. Sophie, a former military personnel, shares her transformative journey from strict discipline to a balanced lifestyle, emphasizing the importance of personal well-being.

Sophie’s story begins with her rigorous routine of intense exercise and strict dieting, driven by the pressures of military expectations. She recalls, "I was so committed to working out, maybe even three times a day, always getting my run in." This relentless pursuit of fitness, however, led to a disconnection from her own body and health.

The turning point came when Sophie realized the need for a mindset shift. She began to view food as fuel and exercise as an opportunity rather than an obligation. "I was able to see food as fuel and exercise as something I got the opportunity to do," she reflects. This change not only helped her regain her health but also enriched her personal relationships and overall life satisfaction. She began to enjoy life so much more. She wanted to be around other people more and that's what really made her feel like she'd come back to herself.

Perimenopause or Hypothalamic Amenorrhea?10 Jul 202400:40:44

In this conversation, Bria Gadd and Cynthia discuss the topic of periods and the challenges faced by women in their mid to late thirties and beyond. They explore the impact of factors such as exercise, nutrition, stress, and sleep on menstrual health. Bria shares her personal experience of losing her period and the journey to understanding the role of hormones and the transition of menopause. They emphasize the importance of listening to our bodies, finding balance in our lifestyle, and recognizing the symptoms that indicate hormonal imbalances.

Takeaways

  • Menstrual health can be affected by factors such as exercise, nutrition, stress, and sleep.
  • Symptoms like irregular periods, disrupted sleep, cravings, bloating, and digestive issues can indicate hormonal imbalances.
  • Listening to our bodies and finding balance in our lifestyle is crucial for maintaining menstrual health.
  • Understanding our menstrual cycle can help us have more self-compassion and adjust our activities and expectations accordingly.
  • It's important to seek professional help and not dismiss symptoms as 'normal' or 'just hormones.' Overexercising and under-eating can lead to hormonal imbalances and other health issues.
  • Having a regular menstrual cycle can bring increased energy and productivity during the follicular phase.
  • Self-care and setting boundaries are important during the luteal phase.
  • Stress management and pleasure contribute to overall well-being.
  • Age is just a number, and it's never too late to prioritize our health.

How Your Weight Can Impact the Medical Care you Receive23 Jun 202200:58:06

Do you dread going to the doctor's office and standing on the scale? Is it legal to decline to be weighed at the doctor's office? Is there a link between our weight and our health? Dr. Maggie Landes joins us today to discuss her journey as a doctor in discovering the truth about the connection between weight and health.

Maggie was a doctor who thought that our weight had an impact on our health. Then she was told she had cancer. Dr. Maggie discovered that being healthy had nothing to do with diet. She is now a doctor who treats patients by addressing their problems rather than their weight.

One Year of Regular Periods: Katrina’s Journey from No Periods to Regular Consistent Cycles19 Oct 202300:45:02

Welcome to another episode of the Period Recovery Podcast!

This week, I'm thrilled to share an inspiring conversation with Katrina, a remarkable former client of mine. Katrina grew up as an athlete & never thought her active & over-achieving lifestyle was hurting her. Katrina opens up about losing her period & how she got it back in record time. She also shares all of the challenges she faced when she lost her period and the triumphant moment she reclaimed it.

In our chat, Katrina shared some profound insights:

  • Recognizing that your struggles are valid can often start when someone you love acknowledges them. It helps solidify that your feelings are real and not just a figment of your imagination.
  • When others make judgments or comments behind your back, remember, it reflects more on them than on you. There's no obligation for you to accept or own others' perceptions of you.
  • Cling to your core values. In moments of adversity, let your beliefs guide and ground you, reminding you of who you are and what truly matters.
  • Join us as we navigate through these personal revelations and celebrate Katrina's journey toward healing and recovery!

Enjoy this episode!
