| Periods & Poops: How The Menstrual Cycle Affects The Digestive System | 27 Dec 2021 | 00:16:28 | |
It’s fair to say that the subject of poop, and especially girls and women and pooping, is a little taboo. I don’t know about you, but this topic was extremely embarrassing for me to talk about for a very long time. As a teenager living in gut health hell, I was too embarrassed to use the bathroom at school and instead tried to suffer through it until I got home. No way would I risk someone being in the stall next to me hearing what was happening! On top of the social issues, keeping poops as a don’t ask-don’t tell topic meant I had no idea that my digestive issues were linked to all my hormonal woes. Here’s the thing - we have to talk about this stuff because just like periods, our digestive health tells us a lot about our bodies but we won’t know when something is wrong if we don’t even know what is normal, to begin with. Let’s push through the discomfort and start talking. To learn more visit https://nicolejardim.com/podcasts/periods-poops-how-the-menstrual-cycle-affects-the-digestive-system. | 232: The Business of Birth Control with Abby Epstein & Ricki Lake | 08 Dec 2021 | 00:41:04
Abby Epstein and Ricki Lake’s award-winning, critically acclaimed documentary The Business of Being Born debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007. With over 5 million views, an online community of over 100,000, and more than 10 million press imprints, it is often hailed as the “must-see” film among mothers-to-be. Looking at the complex relationship of hormonal contraception to women’s health and liberation, their latest documentary, The Business of Birth Control, features the stories of activists, doctors, and scientists who are blowing the whistle on how hormonal birth control affects the mind and body. It is shocking, empowering, and heartbreaking all at the same time. About 13 years ago I watched The Business of Being Born and I was blown away. I remember thinking, “I have to figure out a way to work with these women.” At the time I had no idea how I was going to make that happen. A year later, I moved to New York City, got my health coach certification, and met others in the women’s health space, including Holly Grigg Spall, the author of Sweetening the Pill, who was trying to get Ricki and Abby to turn her book into a movie. She introduced me to Abby and we’ve been friends ever since. I pitched in as much as I could over the years to get this film made and it’s finally here! You can catch me at the beginning of the film, talking about the pill and ovulation. In this episode, we talk about our experiences with hormonal birth control, the far-reaching impact our hormones have on our health, why it was difficult to make this movie, how birth control has been used against women of color, the ongoing fight for reproductive justice, and so much more! | 220: Blood Sugar Basics & How to Test Using a Continuous Glucose Monitor with Kara Collier | 13 Sep 2021 | 00:49:07
I’m a big fan of blood sugar testing and this summer I spent a month using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) from a great company called Nutrisense. It actually changed my life. The CGM let me accurately see what’s going on 24/7 and it was a major step up from the traditional finger-prick method. Today I’m sharing my experience with using the CGM and the co-founder of Nutrisense, Kara Collier, is here to share everything we need to know about our blood sugar. Kara Collier is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Nutrition Support Clinician with a background in clinical nutrition, nutrition technology, and entrepreneurship. After becoming frustrated with the traditional healthcare system, she helped start the company NutriSense where she is now the Director of Nutrition. Kara is the leading authority on the use of CGM technology, particularly in non-diabetics for the purposes of health optimization, disease prevention, and reversing metabolic dysfunction. Kara delivers some incredibly useful information on everything from how the stages of our menstrual cycle impact our blood sugar, to how CGMs work, what you should be aiming for in your blood sugar levels, and so much more!

Basic dietary changes are step one to feeling better, no matter the condition or symptoms you have. Everything comes from the same root cause: lack of the right nutrients, too many problematic foods, and being in a chronic stress state which will make your body act out. There’s always a reason and your body doesn’t lie. In this episode, I’m thrilled to be sharing more about the foundational principles of how to improve your hormonal health and menstrual cycles. I'm diving deep into carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and all the controversial food groups. This season I’ll be creating more solo episodes like this, alongside episodes featuring some pretty spectacular guests, so get ready for all the goodness coming your way! | 218: Why Hormone Testing is a Very Important Tool for Monitoring Your Health | 28 Jun 2021 | 00:31:54
Between writing Fix Your Period, putting it out into the world, moving twice, and months spent as a nomad after the pandemic nixed our plans to move back to NYC in March of 2020, the past couple of years have been immensely stressful for me. I feel like I’m only now emerging from the burnout of this past year. In the midst of all that, I hadn’t been to see an OBGYN for almost three years and after doing some test kits with Let’s Get Checked, the results showed that my FSH and LH were high. Cue panic! In the hopes of getting further hormone testing, I did the homework I’d been putting off and found a midwife nearby with good reviews. Unfortunately, the visit did not go as I’d hoped.

Nana Eyeson-Akiwowo and Marcia A. Cole are two friends and former magazine and digital editors also known for their profound philanthropic work. Their latest venture is Fourth Phase, a company that provides beautifully curated gift boxes that deeply support the mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing of new mothers. The fourth trimester of a new mother's journey is one of the most critical phases of motherhood, yet across the world, women in the postpartum period are often neglected because everyone’s focus is on the newborn baby. These ladies thought of everything a new mother would need and they put it all into their Fourth Phase boxes. They even created separate boxes for vaginal births and belly births (the term they use for C-sections). In this episode, we talk about why the fourth trimester is important, why many new mothers are unprepared for the fourth trimester, how we can advocate for ourselves during this time, what new mothers should expect to happen with their bodies in the fourth trimester, how Fourth Phase boxes help new mothers, and so much more!

| PP# 197: An Honest Conversation with an OBGYN with Heather Irobunda | 01 Feb 2021 | 00:38:16 | |
Dr. Heather Irobunda is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist currently practicing at NYC Health and Hospitals. Heather serves as the Medical Director for We Are Robyn, a service to connect new parents with specialists to find support for their unique parenthood journeys, and also serves as the Maternal Health advisor for Peloton, helping plan fitness content for pregnant and postpartum people. This episode was inspired by the hundreds of conversations I’ve had over the years about uncomfortable gynecologic visits. I wanted to talk to an OB-GYN about ways to feel more comfortable and safe at these appointments. When you've listened, come find me on Instagram (@NicoleMJardim) - I'd love to hear your takeaways. In this episode, we talk about how you can get to know your body, taking control of your OB-GYN visits, how to advocate for yourself, why you should be selective when choosing your OB-GYN, the systemic issues that perpetuate a lower standard of care for Black and brown people, and so much more!
