Change Your Story To Live A Better Life with Lisa Tighe11 Sep 202400:45:55

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm joined by Energy Therapist and Coach Lisa Tighe. In this honest and revealing conversation Lisa talks about the life changing realisation she had at age 33 about what was blocking her happiness and what she did to resolve it. Lisa beautifully and simply explains the connection between EFT or Tapping, and energy, and how EFT works to connect us with our trapped emotions - which may sometimes come as a complete shock to us when identified. We look at the emotions that lie behind emotional eating and the dysfunctional adult behaviours that stem from our childhood stories and how we neutralise them to live better lives. So please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • After attending some NLP training through work, Lisa realised she could change her life.
  • NLP didn’t feel like it went deep enough for Lisa, so she began looking into other techniques and discovered EFT which opened up an entire new world and lifestyle for Lisa.
  • Something that has happened in your past doesn’t have to dictate your future, this was one of the biggest things Lisa realised and what helped her transform the way she was living.
  • Frequently there is a catalyst for change in people’s lives. Lisa finds this in the women she works with, that something has happened which makes them realise the self-loathing and destructive behaviours have to stop.
  • Self-sabotaging behaviours are behaviours that we have done once that felt good that we continue to do and push past the point of normality, behaviours that then impact parts of our lives negatively.
  • Recognising self-sabotaging behaviour is one thing but then you have to do the hard work to break the habit and part of that is being honest about your true feelings about yourself.
  • Acknowledging feelings is one of the key components of EFT and tapping. Lisa also focuses on identifying where feelings are duplicated across different situations.
  • Our bodies are feeding us information about what is happening with us and if things need to change, we just have to learn to listen to what our body is telling us.

BEST MOMENTS

"From that I started my own business, to reach and support more people with the changes that I had made through what I had been learning”

“Events and things that happen are important but it’s what you do with them now, that’s what’s important…what you can do with it now is the impact you have on yourself and the world”

“Overeating is massive self-sabotage”

“No one wakes up and says they want to self-sabotage their life”

“I used food to stop me feeling lonely”

“Doing anything to excess is often self-abuse”

Moving Beyond Money: How to Shift Reality with Antonina Andreeva04 Sep 202400:58:49

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm joined by Leadership Mentor, Modern Shamanic Psychotherapist, and Yachtswoman Antonina Andreeva. In this deep and revealing conversation Antonina explains what lies at the core of dysfunctional behaviour and discontent, and what perception shifts need to occur in order to move through dense negative emotion to create lives that not only look good on the outside but feel good on the inside. She reveals how and why world leaders are seeking out spiritual counselling instead of spin, and how after the age of 40 we experience new value and fulfilment based evolutionary drivers in our search to lead purposeful lives. So please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Antonina isn’t an advocate for the traditional school system, it’s a negative environment that focuses too much on things that individuals aren’t good at.
  • From a young age, we all have our own unique talents but these aren’t cultivated in the right way and the choices we make aren’t driven by what we are supposed to do.
  • Becoming a mother was the catalyst in Antonina’s journey to mentoring and therapy.
  • Our needs and wants change depending on our level of consciousness.
  • Everyone is capable of pushing past what is immediately obvious and engaging their senses to read between the lines and manage energy, it’s about learning the process and harnessing that power.
  • If we can learn about our own energy and vibration, we can project the best version of ourselves into the world.

BEST MOMENTS

"From a young age, we are all blessed with an incredible, unique outstanding talents”

“If I’m going to be away from my child it has to be purposeful and meaningful”

“It’s not just world leaders that can harness energy and bend things to their will, it’s all of us”

“It’s never too late to start, you can start now”

How to Rebalance Your Life with Sadhna Chaman15 May 202400:50:36

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this uplifting episode, I talk to Mind-Body Transformation Specialist and Homeopath Sadhna Chaman. Sadhna talks about how she first discovered she had a gift for healing at a very early age and how it has now become her mission to help others on their own healing journeys. We debate the 'mind body connection' and the critical importance of mindset in changing our lives. Sadhna also busts a few controversial myths about homeopathy, as we discuss the immense power of universal energy, belief, fear and unconditional love. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • From a young age, Sadhna began to learn about the power of healing and throughout her career this is what drove her, eventually leading to her current mission to help as many people as possible on their own healing journeys.
  • After having her daughter, Sadhna started to have chronic health problems. She tried more traditional methods such as tablet medication but when they did not work she turned to homoeopathy and alternative medicine.
  • Homoeopathy allowed Sadhna to get to the root cause of her problems and stop medications she was told she would need for life.
  • The mind and the body are connected, this can’t be underestimated when trying to treat any health problem.
  • We are surrounded by energy and this impacts all of us in often unexpected ways.
  • We are the creators of our lives, until we begin to make some of our subconscious mind conscious, we will continue to call things that happen fate.
  • Not taking everything at face value, from parents, teachers and institutions and taking steps to make choices and decisions that work for you as an individual is the start to altering your mindset and life.
  • Homeopathy looks at the emotional and mental parts of an individual, not just their physical symptoms.
  • There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for any problem. Sadhna tailors her remedies for her clients, what works for one person might not work for another, something modern medicine ignores.
  • Not being ruled by fear and simply asking your body what it needs to heal can be very powerful. But it takes a lot of courage to have this belief in yourself.

BEST MOMENTS

"I’ll treat anybody who is asking for help”

“Through homoeopathy and training I was able to get to the root cause and that is what I now help women to do”

“Energy can be transformed into different forms that may help or hinder us and our health”

“Energy is everything”

“Our focus creates our reality”

“How can something so diluted have such an effect on you? But you really have to experience it…it comes down to perception at the end of the day”

“Fear is a massive contributor to health”

Fashion, Sustainability & Ethical Living with Roberta Lee08 May 202400:57:49

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I talk to Sustainable Stylist and Founder of the Ethical Brand Directory Roberta Lee. Roberta reveals how corporate burnout and a deep seated feeling of unhappiness, caused her to develop an addiction to buying clothes, which at it's height would see her spending up to £500 per month - and then the shocking pivotal event that changed her life and career path forever. Roberta recalls the moment she realised her mission was not only to empower women through fashion, but to redefine and actively change the whole landscape of fashion and sustainability. We discuss the long-term implications of our short-term choices, the seductive rise of 'ultra-fast' fashion and the manufacturing misconceptions around luxury brands. We also examine ways to embrace and remove the stigma around pre-loved clothing and Roberta offers achievable, actionable tips on how to build a sustainable wardrobe. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Clothes shopping addiction or compulsive buying can be a coping mechanism for many.
  • The fashion industry often disempowers women and exploits garment workers in unsafe conditions.
  • Contrary to consumer expectations, luxury brands may use the same suppliers and factories as fast fashion.
  • Building a sustainable wardrobe is a journey, not a destination; start with one small change aligned with your values.
  • Governments need to impose laws on fashion companies' production volumes to address sustainability challenges.
  • Pre-loved, vintage, and upcycled clothing are becoming more popular as conscious consumer choices.
  • Normalising clothes swapping, especially among younger generations, is crucial for sustainability.
  • Creativity and patience are key to finding affordable, sustainable clothing options.

BEST MOMENTS

"I used fashion as a tool for myself to dress the parts in certain roles and male-dominated environments. I used to power dress, I realised I reached a fashion to make myself feel good."

"The reality of what was going on,I just couldn't escape. I was part of it I was part of the problem and I was contributing to this"

"Building a sustainable wardrobe is a journey not a final destination. So, we never get to perfection but we learn how to get there in the most responsible way we can within our means."

"Taking away this stigma around pre-loved or second-hand or thrifted or swapped clothes is a really important step because we have so much clothing already in, in production that's already on the planet that needs to be home."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Roberta Lee | The Sustainable Stylist

https://robertastylelee.co.uk/

https://ethicalbranddirectory.com/

Since 2015, Roberta Lee has been a passionate advocate for sustainable style. Roberta Lee's journey began after she developed an addiction to shopping for clothes during her corporate career. Roberta found herself spending approximately £500 every month on clothes. After watching a single documentary called 'The True Cost', she had a rude awakening about the impact that these clothes and her shopping habits were having on the planet and on the people creating them. Not to mention the toll her addiction took on her mental health and confidence.

In 2017, she established the Ethical Brand Directory, a platform connecting conscientious consumers with vetted ethical brands and providing a secure and accessible avenue for sustainable shopping.

Many people thought she was going nuts, and it was an unworkable idea, but now she has a waiting list of clients wanting her to cut up and restyle their wardrobes and has also worked for celebrities and TV shows.

A.I. & Art with Amit Lennon01 May 202400:58:03

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I talk to portrait photographer and film maker Amit Lennon. It's a real pleasure to listen to Amit share the his journey from Astronomy & Physics graduate to award winning photographer, and hear his personal perspectives on what makes a good portrait. Amit talks about his love of film making, and his recent portrait project, a fascinating exploration into the world of AI, that was initially inspired by Lucien Freud's painting process. He also spills the beans on what photographing the queen of country music, Dolly Parton is really like. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Portrait photography is a two-way interaction between the photographer and the subject, requiring the photographer to guide the conversation and capture the essence of the moment.
  • AI-generated portraits lack the imperfections and idiosyncrasies that make humans unique, resulting in polished but somewhat uncanny images.
  • AI can be trained on billions of stolen images from the internet, raising ethical concerns about the use of AI in creative fields.
  • While AI can be a useful tool, it is limited by the data it is trained on and may struggle to generate truly original ideas.
  • The increasing prevalence of AI in creative industries poses existential threats to various professions, as AI can potentially reuse and repurpose human-created content without permission.
  • Human creativity is limitless, while AI-assisted creativity is restricted by the data it is trained on, often resulting in repetitive or stylistically similar outputs.
  • Lennon's AI portrait project aims to explore the ambiguity and limitations of AI-generated images by providing the AI with minimal prompts and allowing it to interpret the data in its own way.
  • The future of AI in creative fields is uncertain, but it is crucial to remember that AI is a tool that cannot replace the unique perspectives and ideas of human creators.

BEST MOMENTS

"I'm not looking for anything from anyone. I just want them to maybe not be, self aware so much, because obviously we're very self aware of how we look."

"AI is kind of everywhere, rapidly evolving and rapidly changing and getting smarter"

"I always think that kind of human creativity over decades is kind of like being quite limitless. But like AI, assisted creativity is slightly restricted within the realms of what it is."

"These things are amazing tools, photography probably when it started 150 plus years ago was viewed as a sort of some terrible thing compared to painting. It's not art."

"I hope people vote human rather than AI."

Puppetry, Passion & Politics with Puppet Whisperer Sue Buckmaster24 Apr 202400:56:50

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I talk to theatre director, puppet whisperer, author and Artistic Director of Theatre-Rites, Sue Buckmaster. Sue is often asked to speak about the high profile projects that she's working on but in this fascinating conversation we talk about all the things that have formed her, from her extraordinary family background, to her deep desire to better herself and the debilitating illness that changed the course of her career. Sue also shares what she thinks are the ingredients that make a good puppeteer, the place of politics in children's theatre and why we as humans respond so emotionally to puppets. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Puppetry is a powerful art form that allows audiences to project their emotions onto objects, creating a deep connection and cathartic experience.
  • Children's theatre is often undervalued but provides a unique opportunity to engage young minds, sparking their imagination and encouraging them to question the world around them.
  • Embracing your personal struggles, such as illness or lack of education, can lead to a more profound understanding of yourself and ultimately enrich your artistic practice.
  • The rehearsal process is a crucial part of creating theatre, allowing for experimentation, failure, and growth, which ultimately leads to a more authentic and impactful final product.
  • Access to the arts, both for audiences and practitioners, is essential for fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.
  • Spirituality, magic, and the feminine power are important elements in Sue's work, allowing her to explore deeper themes and connect with audiences on a more profound level.
  • Process is often more important than the final product in theatre, as it allows for personal and artistic growth, as well as the development of meaningful relationships.
  • Politics in children's theatre is about allowing young people to practice being political beings, questioning the world around them and forming their own opinions.

BEST MOMENTS

"I didn't have any energy. What energised me, what could I watch or do that made me feel like I had some? And then I gradually got some, and what did that really feel like?"

"Children's theatre is young people practising to be political beings. They haven't decided yet. That's why I quite like hanging out with them."

"It's human nature to connect. And, you know, it's important that we think of the earth as, and nature as this object, that this, this exchange of energy that it holds up."

"I can proudly own many parts of myself. Um, but thankfully to women now who are doing what they're doing now, I love women now and artists now. I'm so grateful to them, and I would do anything to imbue them more with more power, um, for the good, for the good."

"Rehearsals are just the tipping moment when you're sorting it out. It's like rehearsal. I think people tend to go, oh, it takes four weeks to make that show. And that's the wrong thing. So that's why I like to talk more about process, process as product."

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I talk once again to undercover artist Sharon Bennett about her upcoming art show 'Tribe'. Alongside fellow artist Jamie Ashman, Sharon promises an odyssey of fashion, music and dance culture. In this episode we look at how the emergence of fashion tribes have historically always been as a response to socioeconomic upheaval - heralding phases of youth rebellion. We discuss the re-invention of fashion and explore the links between different tribes like Punk and Hip Hop. Sharon also reveals the surprising origins of Mod and Skinhead subcultures. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Fashion tribes have historically emerged as a response to socio-economic upheaval, heralding phases of youth rebellion
  • Sharon and Jamie are artists who share similar themes in their work which led to the collaboration on their upcoming art show 'Tribe'Jamie is a fashion graduate from Central Saint Martins but chose to pursue art, and predominantly works with acrylic on paper and canvas.
  • Sharon's work reflects skinhead culture and juxtaposes a colourful and girly style with dark undertones
  • The 'Tribe' exhibition party encourages attendees to celebrate the impact of musical subcultures by adopting the style of their favourite musical 'tribe'

BEST MOMENTS

"I think there's definitely elements of  the mods, that's statement by style."

"Skinheads were very much influenced in the sixties by Jamaican Caribbean immigrants. And they, they took on the music and the fashion and it was all very inclusive of race."

"Punk was obviously an uprising against the government at the time."

"Hip hop was very inclusive of all races and it was considered if you could sing, you were artistic, you could dance, then you were, you were involved."

"Your tribe is something that identifies you and you always gonna have a bit of it in your life."

"We love the idea of them being part of the exhibition."

"It's kind of to take everyone back, to get them back into their tribe mentality and also, you know, appreciate the other tribes."

ABOUT THE GUESTS

A Cambridgeshire based self-taught artist, Sharon Bennett is passionate about art that is vibrant and striking. Using a range of medium and techniques, Sharon has an artistic style  that is deceptively light and playful with darker undertones and references. How to Grow Resilience from the Inside Out with Sally Baker10 Apr 202400:44:52

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this week's episode, I'm joined again by award winning therapist and speaker Sally Baker as we talk about her brilliant new book 'The Getting of Resilience from the Inside Out'.

Sally uses the story of her own childhood trauma as the foundation for the book, to help illustrate that you can emerge from years of self sabotaging behaviour to live a fulfilling and trauma free life. We discuss parenting, and how and where resilience is created, the misconceptions about our perception of resilience and Sally reveals several techniques to beat the BS thoughts that come from that hypercritical voice we have in our heads. We also examine the growing connection between social media and social anxiety and how the white noise of the world is blocking out the space for self reflection. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

Sally Baker’s book, The Getting of Resilience from the Inside Out is published on May 9th 2024.

Pre-publication price guarantee gives a 24% cover-price reduction if you sign up now.

The Getting of Resilience from the Inside Out The Getting of Resilience from the Inside Out

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Resilience is created, formulated, and either undermined or strengthened within the crucible of the family.
  • The judgments we make about ourselves based on events that happened to us can be far more damaging than the events themselves.
  • Resilience is not innate; it is learned only in families that care for us in the way we need.
  • The voice in your head that gives a running commentary on everything you say and do can be hypercritical or an inner cheerleader, depending on your upbringing.
  • Recognising and interrupting the negative voice in your head is crucial for building resilience.
  • Social media contributes to the growing connection between social anxiety and the white noise of the world blocking out space for self-reflection.
  • Solid human connection that isn't toxic protects our mental health and is the gold standard we all need more of.

BEST MOMENTS

"It's not enough just to have skin in the game and say, oh yeah, you know, I've got lived experience. It's valuable if you have lived experience that you resolved and come out the other side of."

"Another layer of separation when really you just need to or want to sit down and speak with another fellow human."

"So it's human connection that saves us, that builds, that protects our mental health, but solid, you know, human connection that isn't toxic, human connection that listens to us and gives us a chance to speak."

"The bedrock of good, sound mental health is human connection."

"If you are already anxious about yourself or feeling a bit down about yourself, but you've got this toxic drip drip thing, you'll never amount to anything, you'll always be rubbish, look what you've done, you know, it's all your fault, then it doesn't take much to tip you over into heightened anxiety and more overwhelm."

"It's called breaking state. And it means you can't just sit there and listening to this voice in your head, put you down."

"Elevate. This is about elevating us instead of punching down on us."

'The Heist': Reclaiming the Benin Bronzes from the British Museum with Chidi Nwaubani03 Apr 202401:05:25

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this week's episode, I talk to multidisciplinary artist, digital innovator and creator of pioneering 'Looty Art' the brilliant Chidi Nwaubani. In this illuminating and inspiring conversation, Chidi recounts the inception of Looty, and how he devised an extraordinary plan to successfully 'steal back' the Benin Bronzes from the British Museum in a daring heist. We look at the traumatic history how of many artefacts were stolen, and how not only their meaning and significance are altered once they are displaced, but how the culture they came from is forever changed. We also look forward to how future generations are in the position to be able to rewrite historical narratives and reclaim their cultural heritage through art and technology. Please join me as we look at life through a truly fascinating lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • 90-95% of African cultural heritage is held outside of Africa, with the British Museum possessing the most stolen artefacts, including the Benin Bronzes.
  • Nwaubani initiated the Looty project to digitally repatriate stolen artefacts, starting with a daring heist at the British Museum to 3D scan the Benin Bronzes.
  • The digital versions of the artefacts are tokenised as NFTs, with 20% of sales going into a fund to support artists in Nigeria, addressing both repatriation and reparations.
  • Artefacts lose their original context and meaning when displaced from their native cultures, becoming mere objects in museums rather than spiritually significant pieces.
  • Museums often present a limited, Eurocentric narrative of artefacts, failing to acknowledge the full history and cultural importance of the pieces.
  • Nwaubani's work with the Rosetta Stone, or Hajar Rashid, involved digitally repatriating the artefact to its original location in Rashid, Egypt, and rebuilding the complete stone digitally.
  • The younger generation, particularly in Africa, has the opportunity to rewrite historical narratives and reclaim their cultural heritage through art and technology.

BEST MOMENTS

"Imagine somebody robbed you and then the next day they create a law saying anything that was robbed on, you know, anything that, that has been robbed prior to this day is now basically it's legal and it's ours."

"It's not just about repatriation. It's also about reparations."

"The museum is a place of imprisonment, actually. And it's a place of projecting a particular narrative."

"It begins with a heroic act. And it's almost a way of rewriting that story again."

"That's all essentially that we're trying to do is to change the way people look at this and view this."

"Vision is an act of interpretation and it's affecting people's way that they're interpreting things."

Redefining Cancer and Fashion with Sharon Bennett27 Mar 202400:43:28

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I talk to undercover artist and cancer survivor Sharon Bennett. Sharon shares unusual and enlightening revelations around the chemotherapy and cancer treatment she underwent, from a wild non-stop stream of ideas, a side effect of the steroids she was taking, to the unexpected employment discrimination she faced, and the effect of PTSD after her all-clear diagnosis. And Sharon also reveals, how she channelled her creativity to smash the perceptions about how cancer sufferers should look and behave by using her condition to allow herself to embrace her fashion and artistic alter egos and provide inspiration for others to do the same. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Sharon has used art to process her battle with cancer, she has used her art to campaign and shift people’s perceptions around illness.
  • Some people didn’t react to Sharon’s cancer in the way she expected. They distanced themselves and Sharon now thinks this is because of fear and being around her made the ‘threat’ of cancer too real.
  • Starting an Instagram account to tell her story and share her journey, gave Sharon the platform to challenge perceptions and educate people on the realities of a cancer diagnosis.
  • A shockingly common experience amongst those with cancer is that their employers aren’t supportive and, in some cases, they have been dismissed from their jobs.
  • Employers need to look at the policies they have in place and if these work in reality.
  • An unexpected side effect of having cancer has been Sharon’s willingness to experiment with how she looks. She has a lot more fun with her hair, make-up and the clothes she wears.
  • After having success with charity t-shirts, Sharon is now focusing on creating work with other artists with army surplus clothing, the aim is to run a fashion show and reveal the synergy between the battlefield and battling cancer.
  • Finishing treatment isn’t the end of any cancer journey. The fact you had cancer is something you continue to deal with every day. Sharon is currently undergoing treatment for PTSD caused by her cancer diagnosis.

BEST MOMENTS

“Some people became a bit distant and I think that’s because they were frightened to talk to me”

“These companies had things in place for dealing with cancer but they aren’t very good”

“Work is something that anchors you to some form of normality”

“If these people knew what I’d gone through and how strong I am and how resilient I have had to be, they would hire me”

“We’re going to promote the beauty of this battle women have to go through”

“If you’ve got cancer you don’t have to be ill, we only see people with really sick cancer”

“There’s still a lot of shame around illness…it’s fuc*ed up”

“The mental battle is something you still have”

ABOUT THE GUEST

Blog

A Cambridgeshire based self-taught artist, Sharon Bennett is passionate about art that is vibrant and striking. Using a range of medium and techniques, Sharon has an artistic style that is deceptively light and playful with darker undertones and references. Sharon is inspired by pop culture, religion, fashion and passion and has exhibited in London and Cambridgeshire.

In 2022 Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer. As part of her healing, she created a lot of art and collaborated with other artists to make images for clothes that were inspired by her cancer journey.

Alongside her cancer artworks, Sharon collaborates with another fashion artist called Jamie Ashman and in December 2023 they created an art exhibition in London based on the Studio 54 disco aesthetic. In May they are holding a show called ‘Tribe’ which will explore fashion tribes, identity and youth subcultures.

How to Self Heal Compassionately with Amy A O'Day20 Mar 202401:01:13

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I talk to healer Amy O'Day about 'Compassionate Self Healing'. Having suffered from autoimmune illnesses for decades Amy explains the way she finally cured herself of these seemingly incurable conditions. We discuss the critical importance of being allowed to express anger and emotion, how trans-generational trauma can create illness and why when we're triggered our inner 3 year old will often turn up to wanting to drive the truck. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Autoimmune conditions and chronic illnesses are rooted in stored emotions, and the specific condition can be a signpost to the type of emotion that needs to be released.
  • Suppressing emotions, especially anger, from childhood can lead to a build-up of rage that manifests as physical symptoms later in life.
  • Remission is not the same as healing; true healing allows you to live life fully without the need for strict protocols or limitations.
  • Compassionate self-healing involves collaborating with the practitioner to identify and release emotional threads, reclaim power, and update wounded parts of the self.
  • Healing requires readiness and a willingness to let go of the identity attached to the illness, which can be challenging but ultimately liberating.
  • Transgenerational trauma can contribute to chronic illness, and healing oneself can positively impact future generations.
  • The belief meditation available on Amy’s YouTube channel can help release emotional threads and accelerate the healing process.

BEST MOMENTS

"There isn't one part of you that tells the story. There are multiple parts of you."

"Remission is not switching off your illness... When you actually switch off your illness, you don't need anything anymore."

"It takes courage to actually, to choose to be well."

"I have yet to get to a thread and not be able to get to, you know, what the memories are, even with people that have completely blanked out their childhood."

"There is hope and I think that's really important just to give people hope, you know, that they can actually get in the driving seat with you as the instructor and they can, you know, and they can drive towards health."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Blog

Amy developed her own modality, Compassionate Self-Healing, after decades or personal research as a result of a lifetime of chronic illness. Imbalances for her, started as a small child, and the chronic illnesses piled on, gathering momentum with every decade.

Eventually at 35, six months after the birth of her twin boys, her body gave way, culminating in several autoimmune conditions, complete burnout, and an inability to function. From there, she started the deep-dive into the research, working on everything from the microbiome and what the medical establishment could offer, nutrition, alternative therapies, energetic techniques, and researching trauma-release modalities.

After even more illness ensued, she finally unlocked the key to her own individualised healing process by getting the exact answers she needed to what was at the root of her imbalances and switched off all of her autoimmune conditions and chronic illness.

From there, she closed her successful design business of 22 years in order to pursue this work, and her professional practice began, realising the same phenomenal success in others that she had in herself.

With a closed 2-year waiting list, she is now offering a teacher-training practice in order to spread the reach and message of the work, and offers different generalised techniques and healing meditations on TikTok and YouTube to help those beginning their work.

How to Detox Your Life with Fabian Kowallik13 Mar 202401:03:23

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode I get the opportunity to talk to the Exiled Medic himself Fabian Kowallik. Fabian is gaining a huge following on Instagram as a detox specialist in the field of holistic health. Having come from a family of doctors and training as a medic himself, he decided to try a different path when the conventional treatments for his chronic conditions failed him. During our conversation Fabian deep dives into the world of parasites, our gut microbiome and the critical importance of the sun, in maintaining health, as well as revealing the real reason why we're told to put our phones on flight mode on aircraft. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Fabian has struggled with gut issues for most of his early life and was applying everything he had learnt from doctors and also his own medical training but nothing helped.
  • He realised through his own research that he needed to address the root cause of his gut problems or they would never be resolved.
  • Seed oils aren’t as healthy as we are led to believe and often things that are good for us have been demonised by the food industry.
  • There is a lot of misinformation about food and a vast majority of this is coming from the food industry
  • Look at people’s lifestyles in terms of diet from 70 years ago, our aim should be going back to basics and looking to nature to be healthy.
  •  the majority of ailments are linked to our diet.
  • Steroids severely impact the function of your immune system, and although may appear to help initially they can cause serious issues further down the line.
  • Parasites are more prevalent in humans than many people realise and need to be considered as a cause of a variety of issues and symptoms from rashes to gastrointestinal illnesses.
  • Most doctors don’t have the tools or the time to be able to tell patients to overhaul their diet or to get to the root cause of problems.

BEST MOMENTS

"Autoimmune therapy is a thing and we are slowly learning how to get rid of allergies”

“We seem to be living in a world full of misinformation”

“Think about what you’re eating and drinking and putting into your body”

“Go back to nature”

“Maybe it’s more than just calories that matter in food”

“We have such a warped view of what healthy living is”

Angels, Ascension and Breaking Out of the Matrix with Marie Fleming Grant28 Aug 202401:00:49

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm joined by Ascension Guide, Direct Channel, Activator and author Marie Fleming Grant. In this fascinating conversation Marie shares how she first discovered she was a channel for higher dimensional beings and energies outside of the physical realm, and how she has used her gift to help other people access their own channelling power. Marie reveals how we are all have assigned spirit guides from birth and clarifies common misconceptions about their purpose in our lives, as well as how we can learn to directly connect with them. We talk about the effect of shifts in personal consciousness, and Marie explains how the collective planetary ascension that we are currently undergoing, is working to move us from out the dark to the light, in an extraordinary evolutionary aspect never before experienced by humanity. So please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Marie feels like her life has been split in two, her life before as a lawyer, contrasted to how she lives now, particularly as an ascension guide and direct channel.
  • Marie feels information from other dimensions, from beings and energies outside our physical human existence.
  • Everyone has the capability to connect, they just have to learn how and this is something Marie teaches people.
  • There is beginning to be a shift in culture towards Marie’s beliefs and ideas into the mainstream, particularly amongst young people. There is excitement to be tapped into if we accept this is a new phase of life and evolution for humanity.
  • Small noises, sensations and even ailments can be frequencies we aren’t recognising or paying attention to.
  • An activation of these senses can be spontaneous, individuals can feel like they have been ‘switched on’ to be able to communicate.
  • Those who are switched on and can connect with different frequencies have all been doing so in previous lifetimes, this can feed into the current fear to speak out and be open about the messages we are receiving because they have previously been persecuted in other lives.
  • Social media can be a necessary evil, it is very useful in promoting yourself and getting your message out, but it can be challenging managing the negativity and cynicism of others.
  • In order to find light we have to recognise the dark energy at play around us. Light and dark coexist, one cannot exist without the other.

BEST MOMENTS

"We are surrounded by these beings and they are all here to assist us, you all have guides even if you’ve never felt them”

“Now young people are actually standing up and saying actually no, we’re not going to allow this continue”

“There’s never been a time where so many of us, conscious beings, have all been here at the same time all focused in the same way”

“We’re all putting ingredients into this pot so everything we do makes a difference”

“I’m here for the ones that want to hear it and need to hear it”

“We can’t have light without dark”

Finding the Way to Wellness with Philly J Lay06 Mar 202400:59:11

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I talk to the author, podcast host, EFT Practitioner and Soma Breathwork coach Philly J Lay about her incredible journey of self-healing after a near death medical procedure left her with PTSD and an addiction to alcohol and opiates. Philly describes the years of disintegration of her physical and emotional health, and the fear that propelled her to take radical action when she found a large tumour in her throat. We also look at the 'Nocebo' effect and how the power of suggestion can impact our recovery. Philly shares the profound health benefits of EFT or Tapping, and how somatic breathwork can be utilised as a potent free alternative to viagra. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

'Tickets for Philly's in person event with Barbara O'Neill will be released in early April'

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A near-death medical procedure can lead to PTSD, addiction, and various health issues, but it is possible to heal oneself through alternative modalities.
  • The gut is connected to the brain through the vagus nerve, and a poor diet can contribute to mental health issues.
  • Believing in one's ability to heal and priming the mind with positive thoughts can have a profound impact on health outcomes.
  • Doctors and the medical industry often prioritise profit over patient well-being, leading to the overuse of medications and unnecessary treatments.
  • Somatic breathwork is a powerful tool for alkalising the body, reducing stress, and promoting overall health.
  • The sun is essential for setting the circadian rhythm and producing vitamin D, and fear of the sun can be detrimental to health.
  • Embracing change and taking aligned action is key to transforming one's life and well-being.

BEST MOMENTS

"I think you'll find that most people that teach these modalities and do the kind of work getting information out that we do, the majority of people have come from a really dark place themselves."

"We have these extraordinary powers that we can do anything, and we can heal our way any way we choose."

"The doctor of your future is you."

"Nothing, including cancer, can grow in an alkaline body."

"The important thing is this: not what you are, but what you can become."

"If you don't do anything, you'll still be in the same place."

"We are our own NHS (Natural Health Systems)."

"The burning of witches who were herbalists, who were healers, feared for their knowledge and feared for the power that they have in bringing the realisation to people that we can heal ourselves."

ABOUT THE GUEST

'Philly is the host of the podcast 'The Wellness Way with Philly J Lay', which catapulted into the top 2% of podcasts globally with 13 x #1 slots on the Apple Podcast charts. She is the author of 'The Natural Wellness Journal', an EFT/ Matrix Reimprinting Practitioner, Soma Breathwork coach and is a long-standing advocate for our health and that of the planet, discovering that everything is connected.

The Transformational Power of Flower and Gem Essences with Catherine Keattch28 Feb 202400:46:07

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In this episode, I’m joined by the incredible Catherine Keattch. Catherine is a creator of vibrational essences, an essence practitioner, energy healer, spiritual explorer and co-director at Crystal Herbs Ltd. After giving up a career as a professional musician and teacher she began her own spiritual journey of discovery and has been working with flower and gem essences for over 30 years. Catherine explains how the powerfully transformational nature of the essences work by dissolving filters that hold people’s unconscious patterns of behaviour in place; we discuss how stepping into responsibility is stepping into personal power and how our expanding collective consciousness can bring us closer to a 5th-dimensional reality. So please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It was after being dismissed by her GP that Catherine started to look into alternative ways of healing.
  • Catherine tried a variety of methods in her journey from massage to homeopathy but once she discovered flower and gem essences she realised this was what was going to work for her.
  • After training, Catherine decided to take a risk and put all of her working capacity into vibrational essences, this was in the mid-90s and it has been one of the best decisions she ever made.
  • Essences transform our ways of thinking and our patterns, allowing us to truly heal and recognise what is the root cause of our suffering, such as fear of abandonment or not feeling good enough.
  • You can only bring a certain amount of yourself into our current reality, we are shaped by society to fit in with the people and lives around us.
  • People often look outside of themselves for healing but if we take responsibility for ourselves and do the internal work required then we can change our lives.
  • Those who are not connected to themselves can easily be ruled by fear which means they are easy to control.
  • We are all beings capable of creating and 'uncreating'. Once we start to create a life that works for us then we will begin to heal.

BEST MOMENTS

“I came across flower and gem essences and thought right, this is the thing for me”

“I was faced with this really difficult choice as a single parent to two children, to give up my music and move into doing vibrational essences”

“They are really powerful and it can’t be underestimated”

“Essences help to shift what’s holding a story in place”

“In society, we keep our true selves hidden”

“When we take responsibility for our lives, we can change our lives”

“I’m a being of light and I know I am connect to the power of creation”

ABOUT THE GUEST

Catherine Keattch is a creator of vibrational essences, an essence practitioner, energy healer, teacher, spiritual explorer, and workshop leader. She is co-director at Crystal Herbs Ltd which produces a very wide range of vibrational essences ranging from Bach Flower Remedies to very deep acting combinations of flower & crystal/gem essences designed to help us negotiate the current times of transformation with greater ease and understanding.

Essences have been a part of her life for the last thirty years and have also underpinned her own spiritual journey of self-discovery.

Catherine is currently focused on providing resources that will support people to successfully negotiate the current times of transformation as we transition from a third dimensional reality into a fifth dimensional one. As we have all discovered, this involves a substantial leap in consciousness, a good deal of clearing, and an uplift in vibrational frequencies all things that vibrational essences are excellent at providing support with.

Not Needing New: The Art of Living Well with Less with Anna KP21 Feb 202400:59:24

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode, I talk with passionate outfluencer and queen of sustainability Anna Kilpatrick. Anna shares her views on how we have become drunk on convenience and consumerism and how society's orgy of consumption is not only polluting the planet but driving us to live increasingly out of sync with the natural rhythm of nature. We discuss how buying new things is entangled with the idea of happiness and how to look for happiness in other places. Anna also talks about the life changing events that forced her to reframe her existence and how we can make the best of what we have. So please join me as we look at life through a well worn lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Consumer culture links buying new things with happiness and makes contentment elusive
  • Traumatic events forced Anna to reframe her existence and realise she can be happy with less
  • Visible mending and buying second-hand first respects craftsmanship and saves resources
  • Feel grateful daily for basics we take for granted like running water and electricity
  • Focus on spending time with loved ones rather than acquiring more possessions
  • Try new hobbies like walking and cold water swimming to stimulate dopamine instead of shopping
  • Remember that no one's final words are wishing they'd bought more stuff

BEST MOMENTS

"We got drunk and we got to sober up because I think it's exactly right."

"Nobody utters in their final sentence, I wish I'd bought more stuff. No. Do they?"

"If somebody loves you, the biggest gift that they can get you is actually being with you and spending time with you."

"We ploughed ourselves into financial oblivion, but we're still here. We've done it, haven't we?"

"You have probably already got all the things you need in the way that, as human beings, we already have enough clothes to clothe the next five or six generations of people."

"This is the best there is. It's all right. It's raining. You're having cornflakes. You're in a tent."

"Try second hand first. It's so amazing what you can find."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Anna Kilpatrick started the Instagram account @not.needing.new to document her exclusive use of second-hand clothing and homeware over the past twelve years as a single parent on a very limited budget. She is very interested in ideas around satiation and in finding the joy in realising what is enough. Anna is represented by Curtis Brown and is researching for a book about our relationship with fashion and how we have got to the point that we are now at.

How We Create Ideas with Tye Glover08 Feb 202400:50:13

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm joined by Ideation Coach and Founder of Think Different Nation Tye Glover. After being labelled as learning disabled and consigned to a future of manual work Tye describes how the spectre of imposer syndrome haunted him for years, until he finally found the belief to create his own business teaching people how to connect to their ideas and creativity. Tye also explains the theory behind NCP or Neuro Creative Programming and how Star Trek really does influence science. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Imposter syndrome labels us "less intelligent" but we have hidden strengths and perceptive abilities valuable elsewhere, so embrace your distinct way of thinking and operating.
  • Noticing life's anomalies then drilling down for deeper understanding builds a library of novel inputs to spark new ideas and connections á la Steve Jobs' "connecting the dots."
  • Science and imagination are intertwined - science fiction writers imagine what scientists verify, like Star Trek influencing NASA, so perceive creativity as foundational to science.
  • We're distinct individuals experiencing emotion at different polarities and paces, so make space for your own nonlinear neurological and emotional processing free of judgment.
  • The mind directs energy so carefully choose where to place your mental focus, limiting attention on unchangeable, distracting, lower vibrational drama unrelated to progress.
  • "To thine own self be true" - create by knowing your native talents and processes then expand by applying them more widely, living and working aligned with your authentic strengths.

BEST MOMENTS

"I find that I'm tracked and I'm automatically heading to a certain type of process as far as my education is concerned."

"It kills the bear. Once it's minimised the problem, it moves towards the next idea, maximising the opportunity, you're not going to just throw the bear out."

"Science will often go after science fiction writers because they think in a completely different way."

"I wasn't running away from that, I was really wanting, running to what I wanted to create."

Re-imagining Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging with Kat Parsons31 Jan 202400:44:11

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode, I talk to the ISS or International Service Systems, Head of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Kat Parsons about what diversity and inclusion really looks like in the world of work in the 21st Century. Kat talks openly and vulnerably about how her personal life and past employment experiences were a direct and significant influence on her groundbreaking policies for the workforce. We also look at box-ticking, toxic work role models and being unapologetic for bringing all of who you are to work. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Outdated policies and bias meant that when Kat had a child, there wasn't a policy in place for her workplace to support her.
  • Kat created a menopause policy at work after struggling to support her wife, highlighting a major gap in workplace wellbeing. This led to her diversity and inclusion role.
  • Talking openly about taboo topics like menopause makes others feel safe to share their experiences, creating an inclusive culture.
  • People shouldn't hide parts of their identity at work. Bringing your whole self allows you to thrive and progress faster in your career.
  • Toxic workplace cultures based on outdated stereotypes like aggressive male leadership styles are often perpetuated through unconscious bias and lack of diverse role models.
  • Inclusive workplaces recognise every individual has unique needs. Customising support maximises employee productivity, ambition and happiness.
  • Effective diversity requires fully inclusive culture change, not just ticking demographic boxes.
  • Share examples of good workplace inclusion practices openly to create more supportive work environments industry-wide.

BEST MOMENTS

"I was having to work twice as hard as anyone else around me."

"You have to be loud and be...there was, you know, situations where, you know, you had to slam your hand on the desk."

"I shouldn't have to hide something that's natural, uh, that I'm struggling with."

"It turned out that he actually was trans. He's a trans woman, but outside of work, trans woman, inside work, pinstripe suit."

"The quality of the answer is entirely dependent on the quality of the question."

"Allow people to succeed by asking them the questions that they understand."

"Things aren't wrong, they're just different."

"Be who you are, become what you want, and be part of something bigger."

Health is Wealth with Ryan Douglas24 Jan 202400:52:40

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's eye-opening episode, I talk to Ryan Douglas founder and podcast host of 'Health Wealth'. Ryan reveals to us what health wealth really means and how simple shifts in our diet and lifestyle can have dramatic effects on our wellbeing, often reversing conditions previously believed irreversible. We look at ingrained beliefs about western medicine versus herbal and holistic cures, and examine the true the value we place on our health. Ryan also shares his views on the stranglehold that misleading marketing has had, and still has on our perception of what constitutes good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Health is our most valuable asset - without it, we cannot enjoy anything else in life.
  • Prioritising health leads to greater wealth.
  • Herbal and natural medicines can effectively treat many common ailments, but marketing by pharmaceutical companies has conditioned us to overlook these options.
  • Poor diet and lifestyle directly cause many metabolic diseases today. We have the power to prevent illness.
  • The water supply is full of chemicals like fluoride, heavy metals, microplastics and hormone disruptors that should not be going into our bodies. Filtering provides some help.
  • Packaged low-fat and diet foods simply replace fats with massive amounts of sugar and chemical additives, making them worse than what they replace.
  • Constant snacking and grazing on foods all day long disrupts our body's natural metabolic cycles. We should adopt an intermittent fasting approach.
  • Shift your mindset to value health over convenience. Gradually replace packaged and processed foods with locally sourced whole foods.

BEST MOMENTS

"Your health is the most important thing you have - by doing this, they could be cutting 20, 30 years off their life."

"A lot of what we're advised to eat is not actually good for us. It's full of sugar."

"Why does my kettle get full of scale so quickly? I'm putting that water into my body."

"Physical symptoms in our bodies always have an emotional trigger."

"Low fat, low sugar things have no nutritional value and are so bad for you."

"We're kept so busy, we don't stop to think about what's actually in this water."

"Sugar helps processed foods last longer."

"Enjoy the process of cooking and eating."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Ryan is the founder of Health Wealth and host of the Health Wealth Podcast.

After becoming disillusioned with modern healthcare, and nutritional advice Ryan set out on a personal journey of discovery into the real truths of nutrition and human health. Over the next few years he delved deeper and researched further into the topic, widening his knowledge and expertise in not only how to eat the right foods for health but also the real causes of modern disease and how to reverse and prevent them using only diet and lifestyle.

After optimising his own health Ryan decided he wanted to help others and Health Wealth was born with the goal of not only educating as many as possible on optimal human nutrition but also working with clients through 1-1 coaching to reverse chronic health conditions with amazing results! Ryan continues to further his education and has since qualified as a low carb practitioner specialising in type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as a qualification in the treatment of chronic illness through diet and lifestyle.

366 Days of Kindness with Bernadette Russell17 Jan 202401:02:51

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode I talk to the extraordinary author, storyteller, playwright, hopepunk and happiness activist Bernadette Russell. In this beautiful and thoughtful conversation we discuss Bernadette's 366 day kindness journey, which was ignited by the London riots of 2011. Bernadette talks about how she charted her journey, noting acts of kindness given, received and observed and how this daily practice can benefit us emotionally and psychologically. We also look at the notion of joy as an act of resistance and Bernadette imparts some brilliant tips on how to bring more joy into our own lives. Please join me as we look at life through the lens of kindness.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Doing small, regular acts of kindness like helping strangers can greatly boost your mood, resilience, sense of hope and faith in humanity.
  • Consciously noting down moments of kindness you give, receive or witness helps retrain your brain against negativity bias and build psychological resilience.
  • To change the world, focus kindness on your own communities - online or local. Small acts collectively can be very powerful.
  • Creative pursuits that bring joy are acts of resistance against bleak news and should be nurtured.
  • Assumptions about people based on appearance limit connections. Curiosity and chatting can lead to pleasant surprises.
  • Try a week of small kind acts for others and self-care. Notice impacts on mood. Build from there.
  • Children love incorporating kindness creatively e.g. hiding inspiring notes. This fosters imagination and compassion.

BEST MOMENTS

"A riot is the roar of the unheard." - Martin Luther King Jr.

"The variety of creative responses to this thing that I discovered is really wide and really sort of broad."

"Anything that contributes to joy is, is an act of resistance."

"People do want to connect with each other. Yes. They're happy to do so."

"Every day, just check in with yourself and think how can I...make myself better."

"I think it's interesting to have another word introduced, which makes you look at things in a slightly different way."

"We kind of do kind things every day. That's the truth."

Navigating Mountains and Molehills with Mediator Jane Gunn10 Jan 202400:37:55

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode I once again have the pleasure of welcoming back expert mediator Jane Gunn, to discuss her new book, 'The Mole and the Mountain'. In this book Jane provides a map to understanding the conflict journeys that can arise anywhere and at any time in our lives. Jane also talks about what prompted her to write this book and why more than ever we need to understand how to navigate conflict. We also discuss the narratives and challenges that hold us back from self determination and authenticity. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Jane's book visually maps the process of resolving conflict through four symbolic stages represented on a compass: the storm, the murky swamp of reality, the bridge of courage and crossroads, and the mountaintop of experience.
  • People often resist the 'murky swamp of reality' phase of seeking clarity because it requires exploring difficult emotions like underlying fears.
  • We increasingly want others to solve problems for us and have lost the ability to think critically, gather alternate viewpoints, and navigate challenges independently.
  • Normalised societal rules often promote safety over opportunities for creativity, play, risk-taking, and authentic self-growth.
  • Families and social groups frequently challenge our independence and growth out of care but end up holding us back from our journeys.
  • Polarized viewpoints and cancel culture shut down opportunities for nuanced perspectives; we need "big conversations" to understand each other.
  • Staying grounded in our own thinking and being our authentic selves is the unshakeable gift no one can take from us.

BEST MOMENTS

"When you end up in a murky swamp, your temptation is to sort of keep thrashing around to try and get out of it. And it just makes the water muddier and less clear."

"How we express what we want is very different. And of course, all the conditioning we've received along the way plays into the mix."

"Have we lost some elements of childhood and adulthood and growing up about playing and being creative and exploring?"

"Nobody controls us, we are the creators of our own destiny."

"If you can stay grounded in your thinking and behaviour towards others, that's the key."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Jane Gunn is an expert in the field of conflict resolution, a trained mediator and facilitator, known to her clients as 'The Barefoot Mediator'. Listed as a Global Leader in the Who's Who Mediation and featured in 500 Hall of Fame. She is President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and a former director and board member of the Civil Mediation Council of England and Wales.

Author of 2 popular books “How To Beat Bedlam In The Boardroom And Boredom In The Bedroom” and “The Authority Guide To Conflict Resolution”, she has spoken at the United Nations, The White House and the European Commission.

Jane helps people in all walks of life to become ReSolutionaries. Teaching them the basic skills of mediation, she enables people to deal with difference and diversity in ways that are non-adversarial and solution focused.

Her mission is to create a community of ReSolutionaries equipped to lead and inspire others in times of change, challenge and crisis. She has a powerful message supported by practical tools and techniques that applies to organizations of all sizes across all sectors.)

Understanding Bystander Behaviour with Michael Kill03 Jan 202400:46:34

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I have the immense pleasure of talking to the Chief Executive of the Night Time Industries Association, Michael Kill not only about his passion for the night-time economy and culture, but also about the worrying rise of conscious bystander behaviour. We examine how the long and gradual disintegration of community may be one of the reasons for the growing reluctance to become involved in trying to resolve conflict on both an individual and societal level. And how if we are to ever remove the fear of engagement we will have to start with education in schools and rebuilding confidence in communities and each other. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The night-time economy lacked representation pre-pandemic but now has a stronger voice to influence change through media, lobbying, and activism.
  • 850,000 young people came of age during lockdowns then emerged with pent-up energy, less understanding of social norms, and fewer venues with infrastructure to support managed reopening.
  • We need to improve education around topics like unconscious bias and rebuild the moral fabric of communities to increase public confidence in intervening in conflicts.
  • Industry stakeholders should increase cultural understanding of nightlife scenes frequently perceived negatively without context.
  • Communication and willingness to learn about subcultures versus quick judgment would improve relations between authorities and communities.
  • The "conscious bystander" culture stems partly from fear of vilification when intervening and erosion of communal values to stand up to wrongdoing.
  • Progress requires starting with schools to embed inclusivity and respect, though changing societal attitudes will take generations.

BEST MOMENTS

"I always draw back to this in the early days...there was a community that looked after each other."

"The biggest issue...we didn't really have a really strong footing at the table, particularly things like electronic music or counterculture."

"The community needs to play an active part in changing the perceptions of engagement."

"It exemplifies the different eras that we live in and how the morals within society have changed."

Living in 'Liberessence' and Learning to Be Seen with Cindy Ashton21 Aug 202400:54:51

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm joined by award winning TV host, singer, dancer, actor and keynote speaker, the irrepressible Cindy Ashton. Cindy reveals how her lifelong journey as an advocate for those who struggle with visibility began, and the impetus behind her groundbreaking leadership and business programme 'Brave Leaders Rising' - which provides heart based ethical leaders training in how to be seen and heard, as well as successful on prominent stages, Cindy also discloses what drove her to buying herself white privilege at the age of 16, her invisible illness and the freedom she's finally found in living without the devastating effects of chronic emotional, and physical pain. We discuss the life changing importance of self belief, how we don't know what we don't know - and we talk about Cindy's incredible new show 'Liberated'. So please join me as we sprinkle a liberal dose of 'spiritual potpourri' and look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Cindy was born with a heart condition and structural problems with her left side, this led to a childhood of operations and chronic pain. She has spent her life being told she wouldn’t be able to do things but she has beaten the odds time and time again.
  • At 49 years old, Cindy finally has the freedom to wake up each day without being in pain.
  • Most people are not consciously aware of their life purpose. Cindy, on the other hand, knew her purpose but struggled to pursue it fully because of her chronic illness.
  • Self-belief is one of the most powerful things we can build and harness to achieve success. Purpose gives our lives meaning and direction.
  • Cindy’s own experiences of living with an invisible disability have made her challenge perceptions of disabilities and labels.
  • Cindy’s parents were first-generation immigrants from Palestine and she felt the weight of this growing up as well as the prejudice against her for her name. She changed her name and calls this ‘buying white privilege’. It has framed and shaped how she views the world.
  • Cindy fosters and teaches a different approach to leadership, speaking and sales. She is against pushy tactics and instead focuses on making her audience and clients feel comfortable.
  • Everyone has wisdom, they just need to learn how to tap into it inside of themselves.

BEST MOMENTS

"Your world is communication”

“I have basically spent my entire life reversing illness that shouldn’t be able to be reversed”

“I think purpose is a really crucial thing in our life that moves us forward and gives our lives meaning”

“The majority of people in leadership, bought their way to the top because they had the money”

“I’m spiritual potpourri!”

“We’ve been taught that we’re not powerful, from being little kids”

How to Beat the Booze with Sally Baker27 Dec 202300:35:43

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Once again I have the utmost pleasure of talking to award-winning therapist Sally Baker. Today we tackle the subject of our behaviours around alcohol. We examine what makes us drink to excess, how we normalise abnormal and unsafe behaviours around drinking, and the staggering psychological and physiological changes that begin to occur when we abstain from alcohol for an extended period, Sally also offers some excellent strategies of how to combat the temptation of falling off the waggon and red flags to look out for in our relationships when we decide to stop drinking. I have also included some useful contacts in the show notes if you or anyone you know is affected by the issues we cover in this episode. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It’s common for people with an alcohol problem to first seek help for an associated issue such as anxiety.
  • There are a lot of symptoms within someone's life that they have a problem with alcohol and what most of these symptoms have in common, is that their level of drinking is causing them to put themselves at harm.
  • Although many people drink to relieve stress, drinking alcohol is actually worse for your nervous system and body and how it copes and deals with stress.
  • Drinking in moderation is very difficult to achieve and maintain.
  • If you are looking to stop drinking, it’s best to take it slowly and in incremental steps, such as going alcohol-free two days a week.
  • If anyone around you is trying to pressure you into drinking then this is a red flag, they don’t have you or your best interests at heart.
  • Women are fearful of saying no but we have to become more comfortable with it to stop ourselves from burning out or relying on things like alcohol to help us manage stress.

BEST MOMENTS

“It’s rare that a client comes and says ‘I’ve got a problem with alcohol’ ”

“Our REM sequences are reduced when drinking”

“No one wants to go tee-total everyone wants to manage the holy grail of moderate drinking but moderate drinking is really tricky”

“Stopping drinking will feel monumental, it will take all of your brain space up”

“If you’re out with a group of friends and you still want to like them the next day you need to leave by 9, 9-30. If you’re sober and they’re drinking by that time in the evening they are so dull”

“Stick to your stuck record and stick to your no”

“Be aware of who is afraid you are sober”

The Perception Podcast is a Year Old!20 Dec 202300:07:03

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. The Podcast has hit its first birthday, and, in this episode, I talk about the past year, how I have been evolving and learning as well as the difficulties I have faced. I talk about the affirmations, mantras and lessons I have had to remind myself of including the importance of silencing that inner voice of self-doubt and criticism. In 2024 I will continue to use my voice and the voices of others to share stories to motivate, influence and inspire.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Being focused and staying consistent have allowed Caroline to create an entire year's worth of valuable content.
  • Sourcing guests has been one of Caroline’s challenges, particularly because it is so time-consuming.
  • Caroline has spoken to many healers and coaches about self-development and what all these people have had in common is their commitment to their own personal journey.
  • ‘Done is better than perfect’ is a mantra Caroline has reminded herself throughout creating this year’s worth of episodes.
  • Don’t be afraid to use your voice, what you have to say is unique and important, however you say it.
  • Vision is an active interpretation, but memories are not objective, trust your gut, listen to your body and take action.
  • Human beings are incredibly resilient and the power of thoughts, focus and ultimately love cannot be downplayed.
  • We are all powerful creators and abundance will flow to us if we focus and let it.

BEST MOMENTS

“I’m proud of myself for creating a year’s worth of episodes whilst simultaneously working a full-time job, not in my chosen profession”

“I have been incredibly fortunate to have found some of the most fascinating, honest and generous speakers out there”

“By altering that perception, you can change your beliefs and anything, as my guests have proved is possible”

“Consistency is key, whether you want to continue or not your effort will reap the rewards if you allow it to and the process will become easier”

“It’s perfectly acceptable to agree to disagree”

“Being different is to be celebrated”

Activating Rapid Abundance with Anastasia Gerali13 Dec 202301:00:44

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I talk to Divine Potential coach and hypnotherapist the wonderful Anastasia Gerali. We look at how to reframe negative experiences as Anastasia shares her own emotional journey through bankruptcy, homelessness and abandonment, and what it was that brought her back from the brink of despair. Anastasia also shares her beliefs about manifestation, wealth consciousness, and what real abundance in its truest form really looks like. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • After losing everything, Anastasia got an inner prompt to “try a different formula” for living. This pivotal moment started her journey of realigning with her divine potential.
  • Investing in a spiritual mentor expedited Anastasia’s rebirth instead of trying to “DIY” it alone. Support is available if you surrender your ego and allow it.
  • Building successful businesses proved Anastasia’s abilities externally, but she yearned for inner fulfilment by helping others spiritually awaken. This work lights up her soul.
  • Manifestation methods often teach masculine “go get it” energy. As a feminine essence, Anastasia creates through allowing and receiving rather than forcing. This makes creating easier.
  • True abundance stems from following your soul’s purpose so you’re divinely compensated, though not only financially. It means trusting infinite universal supply to provide your needs.
  • Trauma awareness helps foster compassion but don’t let it become a crutch. Use understanding to uplift yourself, not excuse undesirable reality.
  • Anything - including generational trauma and limiting beliefs - can be erased and rewritten at the subconscious level through hypnotherapy. This uproots issues rather than pruning symptoms.

BEST MOMENTS

“It was in my darkest hour...where I felt I had nothing left to live for. I felt that I had given everything, not just to my relationship, but also to my business at the time.”

"When you are here in this world, just like you are right now, Caroline, doing the thing that you’ve been called to do, doing the thing that you’re here to do, your passion, your purpose, you will always be divinely compensated."

"In order for me to have a new foundation for trust and faith, I need to do the healing, clearing work."

"When we develop...any issues on our...female genitalia, our womb space, our breast space, there’s a resentment...There’s a resentment towards being a woman in this man-made world.”

“The body can absolutely heal itself completely, the mind can completely heal, your emotions can completely heal, you as a soul, as a spirit can heal and expand into what your true potential is, what your true creative expression is."

How I Escaped Coercive Control with Amanda Hart06 Dec 202300:46:19

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I talk to former therapist, intuitive coach and mentor Amanda Hart about the publication of her long anticipated book 'Sue Me', a memoir of her experiences of domestic abuse and coercive control. She reveals the surprising backlash the book received and how it stalled at initial publication in 2015. Amanda also shares how she survived a childhood of graphic physical, emotional and mental abuse by cultivating a healing relationship with the natural world, and what can only be described as angelic experiences. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Childhood abuse can imprint harmful patterns that attract abusive relationships later unless the root causes are addressed.
  • Loving yourself and focusing on your highest potential is more transformative than hating perpetrators.
  • Forgiveness is essential for breaking karmic ties to abusers and true healing.
  • Speaking openly about abuse removes stigma, empowers victims and prevents further harm.
  • Connecting deeply with nature can provide solace and strength during suffering.
  • Mystical/intuitive experiences helped Amanda survive and now inform her work.
  • Simple daily practices that "feed the blueprint" of your best self are anchoring and transformative.

BEST MOMENTS

"It was 14 and a half years of trying to survive and not knowing if I was going to survive, and that was on a daily basis."

"The emotional and mental abuse lasts, and it lasts, and it’s imprinted."

"Why should we keep being told that we have to be shut up so that the perpetrators can keep perpetrating?"

"If we take responsibility for what's going on in our thoughts and communication, that has a very different effect."

"Social media was only created to get people antagonistic with one another."

"Your intelligence is actually in the energy world. Tune into your higher nature for solutions."

"It's like having a super library compared to the limited library of our past experiences."

"I survived harrowing experiences because I learned to love my perpetrators."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Amanda Hart, a Mum of 3, discovered she was very different to other children during her childhood through a deep relationship with her intuitive faculty. This helped her to survive a dire upbringing when taken from her mother by her father. She was invisible behind the veil of a middle-class family hiding a very dark secret.

As a consultant, Amanda has worked with clients for over 27 years to help them overcome their limiting beliefs, underlying assumptions, or negative programmes, through an innovative intuitive coaching approach. Working with their unique journey, she helps them to discover their power, purpose, and people so they can thrive, whilst igniting a global impact.

Her memoir The Guys Upstairs, quite unexpectedly changed the course of her life, as well as others and now the recently updated edition, Sue Me, is the catalyst behind her campaign for greater transparency and authenticity in an uncertain world.

Combating Accent Bias and Finding your Voice with Hayley Johnson, Christine Mullaney and Paul Bourne29 Nov 202300:20:44

In this episode, Caroline revisits some past episodes including conversations with workplace lawyer Hayley Johnson, communication coach Christine Mullaney and theatre director Paul Bourne. These conversations look at their personal perceptions of finding, having and using your voice in the workplace and the world. They explore what this can mean if you are someone who doesn’t fit in and the many biases surrounding accent as well as how to feel empowered as individuals.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • People look at where you are from, the way you speak, and your appearance and often make assumptions about your ability to learn, intelligence and more. It’s a disservice to you but to society as a whole too.
  • Finding your story and communicating with people how you relate to them and how you can help them can be your USP.
  • Natural bias can be good for us but it’s how we recognise it and how we react to it that counts.
  • Listening is one of the most important aspects of tackling accent bias, particularly if it is a second language of the speaker.
  • Internal biases, that is beliefs we have internalised ourselves also have a role to play in accent bias and how we think we may be perceived.
  • Feeling ‘safe’ to be honest with your thoughts and say what you think is one of the biggest elements in having an open and honest workplace culture where people are transparent.
  • Having employees who feel they have a voice creates self-worth which in turn creates a workplace that thrives on creativity and is solution-driven.

BEST MOMENTS

"I had no idea that when you spoke impacted whether or not people wanted to befriend you”

“Those people who are making assumptions from accents are doing this because they haven't lived experiences that you have is you come from a working-class background”

“The further north you come from the less employable you’re deemed to be”

“Are you in an environment where you feel safe to say what you think?”

“If you believe in the work you are doing then you start to think about how you can make improvements”

Reflections on Perception22 Nov 202300:02:53

Hello everyone and welcome to the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. As many of you know last week marked the 50th episode of the series and gave me a moment to reflect on my journey so far and what I intended to do. I feel incredibly proud to have been able to bring a vision to fruition, to use my voice, and provide a platform for investigation and discussion. I would especially like to thank you the Perception Podcast listeners, thank you for listening, for following and for your support, it's more important than you know and I am immensely grateful for you.

I've talked to an incredible variety of people in the series so far, and covered the broadest range of topics from within the world of science, to the deepest recesses of the soul, from acting to art, clowning to yoga and balloon sculpture to intimacy coaching, but what binds all my guests together is their desire to tell a story, to share their view of the world through their own unique lens. I've talked to people who have a fascination with the world, and their place in it. I thank all of my guests from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to talk about their lives and work, and especially those who have courageously and honestly shared their stories of personal human revolution, and the perception shifts that they experienced which helped them to understand that there is something more out there in the for them than what they were originally told by others. They are change makers, not only creating change in their own lives, but in the lives of everyone with which they share their work and experience. They demonstrate the power of autonomy and are creators of their own new realities, as we can all be.

So in the next few episodes of the series I will be drawing on some of the remarkable stories that I have heard and weaving together links, similarities and thoughts interspersed with my own reflections and perceptions. Please continue to join me as I revisit these stories through a very different lens.

Explaining the Science of Memory with Professor Daniel C. Richardson15 Nov 202300:44:49

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm marking this the 50th episode of the series by inviting back my very first guest Professor of Experimental Psychology Daniel C. Richardson to deep dive into the fitting topic of memory. Once again I'm astounded by the insights shared by Dan as we learn that despite having an immense capacity for recognition, memory is not an objective instrument of recall, but essentially serves as a tool of storytelling, and that tool is highly susceptible to bias, expectation and suggestion. So please join me as we remember the past through a very a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Memory reconstructs events through storytelling, not accurate playback. We fill in details that seem plausible based on assumptions.
  • Repeated retelling of memories introduces distortion and bias over time as we recreate narratives. Stories evolve with each retelling.
  • Visualisation when encoding information creates deeper initial brain activation, improving later recall. Engaging more senses aids memory.
  • Traumatic memories have a true core, but peripheral details woven around them may shift via repeated retelling. This can cloud legal testimony.
  • Memory loss in dementia is often a retrieval deficit rather than erased data. Cues from the past can help reawaken inaccessible memories.
  • To remember names, create vivid (even bizarre) mental images combining the name and the person's appearance in the moment you meet them.
  • Though details may be flawed, personal memories still hold meaning and value. Storytelling gives our lives richness.

BEST MOMENTS

"When you recall a memory, you're not pressing play on the DVD player of your brain. You are spinning a story and telling yourself that detail."

"The more you visualise stuff, that gives you more diverse brain activation and makes it more like you're remembering stuff."

"If I was to show you a penny and flip it round, you wouldn’t say, hang on, that’s the wrong way round."

"Because what those things are, are stories and personal stories that like all stories have great meaning and value."

"Some of the details might be wrong. The person wasn’t wearing that coat that didn’t really happen, but that’s not the important thing about it."

"If your test is just, have you remembered these five things? Then yeah, note-taking is really, really useful."

"Rather than just say, oh, hi, you’re Doug. Nice to meet you, Doug. Take a few mental seconds to think, how am I going to remember Doug?"

"It’s just a case of reawakening it. Getting them to tell that story again."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Daniel C. Richardson is a Professor of Experimental Psychology at University College London. Prior to that, he was an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford, a graduate student at Cornell, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford, and an assistant professor at UC Santa Cruz. His research examines how individuals' thought processes are related to the people around them. He has authored many scientific articles in cognitive, developmental and social psychology and two popular science books, Man vs Mind and A Dummies Guide to Social Psychology. Daniel has appeared in science documentaries, TV shows such as 'Duck Quacks Don't Echo', and been featured on the Naked Scientists podcast. He consults with a group of scientists at ACN Labs to use the tools of neuroscience to answer real world questions outside of the lab. He has investigated such as how the brain responses to audiobooks, what is special about the experience of live theatre, and whether fast sports cars really do compensate for a lack of manhood. He received three Provost's Teaching Awards from UCL, and has performed shows at the London Science Museum and Bloomsbury theatre combining science, music and live experiments on the group mind of the audience.

Trusting the Body's Intelligence with Dr. Magdalena Baciu08 Nov 202301:06:00

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I talk to healing arts practitioner, hypnotherapist and superconsciousness guide Magdalena Baciu. We discuss choosing to trust the power of the body's intelligence against relentless and unhealthy workplace practices that create a culture where we continue to feel we have no choice but to put ourselves last. Magdalena shares her own story of overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and a serious heart condition, induced by the stress of her high level job in the world of tech, and how she now works with clients on clearing their 'perceived' limitations to maximise the impact they have in the world. Please join me as we look a life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Stress from unhealthy work practices can severely impact physical and mental health, as Magdalena experienced.
  • We must observe our mind and thoughts objectively, not believe or act on them blindly. Be aware of what we feel and act with this awareness.
  • Ceremonies and ancient rituals harmonise and cleanse us, making us feel more connected.
  • Nature heals through its elements - fire, water, air, earth. Tuning into them brings balance to the rest of your life.
  • We hold ancestral wisdom in our genes that rituals and practices can awaken.
  • Lead by example. Create inviting spaces for others’ growth when they are ready.
  • Mind, body, spirit are all interconnected. This is why holistic healing works on all levels.

BEST MOMENTS

"The intelligence of the body is so on point."

"If the nature is dirty and polluted, I cannot be healthy because it’s all connected”

"Sometimes we bring too much information, too much pressure, too many rules, too many guidelines, and what is happening - if that happens, the person is going to make those things automatically because they are rules and what we do in that stage, in that context, we prevent the person to wake up themselves."

"We lead by example and we are kind, inclusive and inviting with the other person."

"Prayer is prayer in whatever language."

"If you’re not able to observe the mind and you are moving with the mind, the mind goes wherever it goes."

Operating Against Medical Advice with Simone Gisondi01 Nov 202301:04:15

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I talk to holistic healer, health coach, hypnotist and author Simone Gisondi. In this truly eye-opening episode, Simone opens up about how a near-death experience completely changed her life and way of looking at health, healing and nutrition. We look at how the food industry perpetuates false information regarding food and nutrition, and we address the underlying psychological, emotional, and vibrational causes of ill health. Please join me as we look a life through a different lens.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Simone’s journey to what she does today and who she is has been traumatic but it is the reason she began to explore alternative medicine and health.
  • Stress is the root cause of most diseases; it initiates harmful biochemical changes in the body.
  • Processed and chemical-laden foods tax the immune system and cause inflammation.
  • Healing requires nourishing foods with a high, natural vibration to elevate your energy.
  • Thoughts and emotions emit frequencies that affect the body just like food.
  • Taking personal responsibility and control of your health is the first step to well-being.
  • Look critically at all health claims and research who funds them before seeing them as the truth.
  • Work with a professional to identify nutritional gaps and imbalances unique to you. There is no such thing as a one size fits all approach to health.

BEST MOMENTS

"I realised that 99 percent of all disease has its roots in stress."

"Much like how the energy of the foods that you take into your body have the same effect."

"Stay away from foods that are 'fortified' or 'enriched'; it means it wasn't there to begin with."

"Everything that we interface with is going to affect our health, 100 percent including thoughts."

"We are the ones that create our own health and our own ill health."

"Mother Nature gives us the only things our bodies truly recognise as food."

"Put on your critical thinking hat to understand how foods work."

"If your thoughts are fearful, it will certainly make you sick."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Simone holds a Certified Holistic Nutritional Consultant designation, graduating from the International School of the Healing Arts where she studied under Naturopathic Doctor and Master Herbalist Dr Robert Morse in the US, and the Holistic Cancer Program in Canada. She is also a Certified Hypnotist and has her own coaching business GISONDI TRANSFORMATION CONSULTING.

‘The Scariest Actor in Scotland' with Tam Dean Burn25 Oct 202301:14:11

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm joined by acclaimed actor, musician and activist Tam Dean Burn. Once dubbed 'The scariest actor in Scotland', Tam talks about how he saw acting as an escape route to possibility and how that vision evolved into a prolific career spanning nearly 50 years. From working with the likes of Steven Berkoff and Irving Welsh to his more recent work raising climate awareness with children Tam has always searched for meaning. He also talks openly about the life changing event that led him to re-valuate his perceptions around mental illness and how that has since informed his work. Please join me as we look a life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Tam initially saw acting as an escape from a troubled home life and difficult relationship with his mother, opening up a whole new world of possibilities.
  • Punk music became an outlet for Tam's anger but he realised acting allowed him to channel his energy in a more constructive way through the discipline of performance.
  • Working with directors like Steven Berkoff who celebrated working-class stories helped Tam find meaning and belief in more alternative, physical styles of theatre.
  • Being stabbed by a mentally ill man led Tam to completely re-evaluate his perceptions around mental illness.
  • The experience inspired Tam to create work aimed at understanding voices in people's heads, reducing stigma and supporting mental health.
  • Tam uses daily meditation, yoga and tai chi to find calm, control his anger and recover from difficult situations.
  • Performing climate crisis awareness shows for kids is now a major focus for Tam - helping shift perceptions on protecting the planet.

BEST MOMENTS

"I was the first person in my whole extended family that moved away from home without being married."

"If I'd carried on doing Agatha Christie I would have dropped out, who knows where I would have ended up."

"When you've got children, I don't know, then you just think, God, what is it going to be like for my daughter?"

"He's been told by the voices that there was a paedophile ring of Scottish actors and I was the only one he recognised."

"I felt immediately calm. I didn't freak out at all...it must have been a really sharp knife."

"Forgiveness is the key to the kingdom of heaven."

"Maybe I could make a series of podcasts with the interviews - podcasts are all about listening."

"If life was based on forgiveness, we'd all be in an entirely different place."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Tam Dean Burn is a Leith-born actor, musician and political activist who was the mainstay of agit-prop street theatre group Workers Theatre Movement and Artists Against the War from the 1980s on. He was lead singer of the Edinburgh punk band Dirty Reds as featured in the recent award-winning documentary on the Scottish post-punk scene Big Gold Dream. He currently sings in The Bum-Clocks with post-punk legends Malcolm Ross (Josef K) and Russell Burn (FIre Engines) and performs with Tommy Smith’s Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. He has had an acclaimed career in theatre, working extensively with Steven Berkoff and at the Donmar, Almeida, National Theatre, Soho Theatre, Glasgow Citizens' and the National Theatre of Scotland. He toured nationally and internationally with his one man show adaptations of Irvine Welsh's Filth and Venus As A Boy by Luke Sutherland.

Disability, Sexuality and Artistry: Unspeakable Conversations with Mat Fraser14 Aug 202401:01:17

Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I'm blessed to be talking to the force of nature that is the multi-talented Mr Mat Fraser. As well as being internationally known as a disabled actor, writer, and musician Mat is a long time advocate and activist within the disability rights movement. In our conversation Mat shares his journey from angry young man to equally passionate older man within the industry, and how changes over the last 30 years have impacted his career, for example the practice of 'disability-blind' casting and what that means in terms of expectation and reality. We discuss Mat's brilliant new Netflix show 'KAOS', and his current theatre show 'Unspeakable Conversations'. - And we look back at his controversial 2005 show 'Thalidomide!! A Musical' as we debate how audience guilt and cultural sensitivity can prevent us from being able to accept humour. Mat also shares the surprising personal challenge he faced when his 85 year old mother took a lover 35 years her junior, his proudest moments, and why you should never go to bed on an argument. So please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Mat is approached for interviews and thoughts more now than ever, because of the amount of experience he has built in disability advocacy, particularly in the arts space.
  • In his youth, Mat projected a lot more anger onto the world, he has always been an outspoken person and felt he had to make his own rules in life to navigate the ableism he faced.
  • Mat learnt to brand and promote his own theatre shows, with rules and controls, so that they couldn’t be framed in a prejudiced way.
  • Comedy trends are intrinsically linked with society and current culture, Mat has had to change his style of comedy and performances as almost all comedians do.
  • Comedy is the ability to laugh at anything in society and acknowledge humanity and our existence.
  • Inclusivity doesn’t erase ignorance, something Mat has experienced frequently on set. He tries to always educate crews and production teams.
  • Whilst culture in the West is more inclusive in a lot of areas for disabled people, it often isn’t realistic or takes into account the real experiences of disabled people.

BEST MOMENTS

"I’ve been around so long that people care what I think about stuff or think that my take on it might have some value given the length of time I have been looking at the subject”

“None of the things that are meant to happen when you obey the rules happened so I thought for disabled people it doesn’t count so fuck all rules in that case, I’ll make my own path”

“I think we need disobedience, we need disobedient adults because otherwise we’re completely fucked over”

“I do have hope for the future, you have to have hope for the future”

“There was a lot of audience guilt, that’s why people didn’t want to laugh”

How to Communicate Telepathically with Animals with Paloma Bärtschi17 Oct 202300:50:38

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's mind blowing episode I have the absolute pleasure of talking to professional animal communicator Paloma Bärtschi. Paloma describes the electrifying moment she first heard the 'voice' of an animal trying to contact her, and how that first exchange has led to a 22-year career devoted to creating greater understanding between humans and animals. Paloma explains how animals act as a conduit for our emotions, and are here with us not for us.

We also discover why cats always gravitate to people who don't like them, and learn the secret to how we too can communicate with animals.

Please join me as we look a life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Talking to animals is not a gift, anyone has the capacity to learn to do it.
  • All children can communicate on a telepathic level until they hit a certain age and it’s forgotten as they no longer practice it.
  • It was 25 years ago that Paloma began hearing and understanding animals as an adult.
  • Paloma went on to study animal communication for the next two years. To begin with, she could only converse with her horse even though she could hear most animals.
  • To communicate effectively with animals you need to develop, understand and establish your specific ‘channel’.
  • We can learn so much from animals and it can take us out of our human-centred world, where we are often experiencing tunnel vision.
  • People usually seek Paloma out for animal behavioural issues but often this results in Paloma actually helping and working on the human. Animals mirror us and our behaviour and their poor behaviour is often a reflection of their environment.

BEST MOMENTS

"The horse communicated with you, that’s telepathic communication”

“I did hear the other animals telling me things, I felt like Dr Dolittle”

“My whole life changed then as I knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life”

“You can talk to animals about anything”

“Cats need negative energy to recharge”

“Animals are here with us, not for us”

Discovering the Artist Within with Kamila CK10 Oct 202300:48:20

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode, I talk to visual and performance artist Kamila Kessler about how she affected the monumental change that shifted her life from a career in hospitality consultancy to her true identity as an artist. Kamila talks openly and emotionally about how looking beyond her fears and committing to following the guiding voice of intuition has been key to her success, and we examine the impact on our closest relationships when we go for what we love.

Please join me as we look a life through a different lens.

 KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Awakening happens when we open up to exploring our passions and talents.
  • Surrounding yourself with people ahead of you on your path accelerates growth.
  • Saying “I am an artist” out loud helps you become it.
  • Following your intuition rather than logic leads you where you’re meant to be.
  • Don't let age or time dictate what you can achieve.
  • Stepping outside your comfort zone is necessary for growth.
  • Let go of the logical mind and what others think you should do.
  • Don't compare your talents or progress to others.
  • Allow your interests to organically merge into your own artistic language.
  • Say yes to opportunities aligned with your passions.

BEST MOMENTS

"I kept thinking about the gold on the other side and I think that's what drives me because there's always the gold."

"If we don't accept and have faith and belief and see our talents for what they are, we will be just proving to other people or ourselves that we have it."

"I follow my intuition. I follow the voice inside me. I follow my soul in a way."

"I am an artist. I'm an artist. There's so many forms, you know."

"It was scary. It was bloody scary, but it's, but it's, but the, but the reward is worth the risk."

ABOUT THE GUEST

Born in Poland,1985, Kamila Kessler has lived and worked in the UK since 2007. She holds a Master's Degree in International Hospitality Management from Oxford, UK. She worked as a marketing head for London-based hotels and international marketing agencies. Kamila left her first career to become an artist in 2018 under stage name Kamila CK. Since then, she visited Japan multiple times, studied at Slade School of Fine Arts and completed the Professional Course in Circus Arts with AirCraft Circus in London. She had the great fortune of studying 'Shodo' (the art of Japanese Zen caligraphy) under Japanese teacher, Rie Takeda. This way of painting became a cornerstone in her artworks, combined with five years of movement-based performance practices including trapeze, aerial hoop, and silks.
Since 2019, her performance and visual works have been exhibited and staged in London as well as abroad (France residencies 2021 and 2022, Florence Contemporary Gallery, Italy 2021). Her works are held in private collections in the UK, US, Canada, France and Poland.

From Fight, to Flight and Freedom with Natalie Nicole James04 Oct 202301:05:48

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode, I have the absolute pleasure of talking to the immensely talented dancer, circus artist, aerialist and teacher Natalie Nicole James, Natalie shares her remarkable journey: from how at an early age she used dance to help her process the trauma of losing her mother, to her escape from domestic violence, and her ensuing fight for justice and a better life. We also discuss Natalie's experience of balancing the demands of career and motherhood, first as an emerging artist of just 18 and then again as an established performer of 35.

Please join me as we look a life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Natalie used dance as an emotional outlet after losing her mother at a young age, discovering it helped her process trauma.
  • Escaping domestic violence, Natalie moved cities to protect herself and her young daughter, beginning the fight for justice.
  • While pursuing her arts degree, Natalie simultaneously battled housing issues, a legal case, and raising her child alone.
  • Natalie advocates for organisational learning to better support marginalized students with empathy.
  • Returning to perform in her hometown years later, Natalie inspired the next generation, seeing her success.
  • Natalie emphasises that healing takes time, learning to let go of resentment and focus inward is part of the healing process.
  • Having a second child in a secure relationship makes Natalie feel positive but she still recognises that she is evolving in her identity.

BEST MOMENTS

"I just decided that my daughter's watching me. Like she's pretty close to my age. And so at times when I didn't see a certain value in my own self or life, I would look at her."

"You are a woman of iron! You're a woman of, you're a woman of, Mental! You're breath taking courage, honestly."

"To have come full circle, actually, you know, to come full circle and to come back and to kind of go, here I am in all my amazing power is so incredible."

"I took, I basically, I pursued a case against the council whilst I pursued a case against my daughter's dad, whilst doing my degree, whilst raising my daughter, and I was knackered."

"I remember one of my feedback was ‘shouldn't be able to get away with things just because she's talented’ this was like one of the teachers. But I'm thinking, and my perception, so this is the perception that I had coming towards me from others."

Trial by Media: Survivor versus Perpetrator with Sally Baker27 Sep 202300:44:43

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode, I'm thrilled to be once again talking to award-winning therapist and trauma specialist Sally Baker. In light of the recent allegations against Russell Brand Sally and I discuss the power of the media in shaping our perceptions of survivor and perpetrator, and how women especially are judged in the public arena. We explore the elevated sense of self that can emerge with celebrity, and look at the acquisition of power as a tool of control.

Please join me as we look a life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The media has considerable power, particularly in perceived facts, as has recently been seen in the trial by media of Russell Brand and Harry and Megan.
  • Frequently the public hold onto the soundbite put out by the media and don't understand or take the time to research the full picture and context.
  • A lot of the time the people who are pulled up on things they have done or said are women and it’s another layer of misogyny, where women can’t speak openly.
  • There are many layers of confinement and injustice for women in the film industry, from the connection of looks with success to the differences in pay. This isn’t where the discrimination stops as Sally talks about why class and race impact a person’s ability to even enter the industry.
  • Those who have survived abuse can be portrayed as unreliable if they can’t relay all facts and also because they have managed to overcome what happened to them. Trauma can impact a person’s memory recall ability, especially for things like dates.
  • There is a myriad of responses to being assaulted and regardless of which one a woman chooses she is often criticised for it.
  • Every time you talk through a memory you reprocess it, this can create a gap between what happened and what you then can recall accurately.
  • There is always some level of shame attached to talking about sexual assault, for this to then be in the media and the backlash that creates must be incredibly difficult and isolating for the victim.
  • When the culture in TV and film is about adapting workplaces to aid the perpetrator, then it clearly demonstrates the sexist and misogynistic attitudes they have, women are suffering in multiple ways including being excluded from workplaces and jobs.
  • People accept poor behaviour from others, especially those in higher roles than them as they want to be able to progress and develop their career.
  • The benchmark for human decency, including personal hygiene, can be very low for famous people as they have a completely different attitude.
  • Regardless of the situation, women are often blamed, society is built to support and therefore believe men.

BEST MOMENTS

‘People make decisions based on emotion and any facts, true or false, become immaterial because our emotions are so powerful’

‘People immediately seize on a soundbite without hearing the whole of the context’

‘Here we are in 2023 and women are worried about what they’re saying, doesn’t feel like progress’

‘It’s not only sexist it’s classist and there are layers of discrimination’

‘They don’t behave like normal civilians like you and I’

'Wherever we have power imbalances and have people who want to be chosen, they will put up with a lot of stuff'

'Everyone has access to you [with social media] and everyone has their say"

'I refuse to punch down on a woman I don't know and have never met [On Megan Markle]

The Secret to Capturing a Perfect Photograph with Robert Golden19 Sep 202301:06:18

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In today's episode, I have the absolute pleasure of talking to veteran still life photographer, director and more latterly documentary maker, author and essayist Robert Golden. Robert shares his unique process and discloses the precise moment as an 8-year-old when he knew that making art would become his life. We also unpick the difference between seeing and looking and how generalisation is the enemy of success. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • At just 8 years old, seeing Diego Rivera's epic murals showed Robert how art could tell impactful stories and ignited his passion for visual storytelling.
  • Questioning assumptions, digging deeper by asking "why," and thinking critically are essential to grow creatively and in life.
  • When photographing a scene, you must look beyond the surface and ask yourself what story you want to tell before capturing the decisive moment.
  • Generalisation is the enemy of creative success; be specific about your viewpoint to take impactful photographs.
  • Study the masters across mediums to improve your own work and gain insights about life.
  • As a photographer, you are drawing with light, not just documenting an event - recognise the fleeting uniqueness of each moment.
  • Robert aims to honour his responsibility to the people he photographs by depicting their dignity and humanity.

BEST MOMENTS

"I want to make stories with pictures. And I was deeply moved by it."

"The real enemy of any success is generalisation."

"When do you release the shutter? You're photographing emotion."

"The biggest question people have is why. Why are you saying that?"

"I cared for the underdog. That painted my life."

ABOUT THE GUEST

BIO

Robert began his career in New York and then in London as a photojournalist, documenting the working lives of people in many industries.

He became one of the most successfully food and still-life photographers in the UK and internationally in the 90’s, adding to his portfolio as director and director of photography, 900 television food commercials and two award winning feature films.

From 1999 to 2005 he created two successful television series, Savouring the World and Savouring Europe, seen in over 40 countries. These films are good-time stories looking at the food and culture of 26 different regions around the world.

He has since made another 20 documentaries about the arts and also about youth in the world. His research about many aspects of food production and his love of food and his caring for those who work so hard to produce it has led him to make THIS GOOD EARTH, which now has global distribution via Random Media.

This new film, BELONGING – BECOMING concentrates on the lives, concerns and hopes of young people in the shadows of corruption, war and climate change.

The 'Art' in Artificial with Chris Dobrowolski13 Sep 202300:41:43

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I revisit my conversation with artist and performer Chris Dobrowolski as we focus on the motivation for Chris' new show 'Toy Stories'. We look at the implicit challenges in creating and performing the same material night after night and discuss the notion of authenticity, a central motif of Chris' work. Chris shares his thoughts on the fluid boundaries between what is perceived as real and the unreal and how he uses that in his show. Please join me as we look at art through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Post-truth politics is almost taking on the persona of art and fantasy, but it’s our reality right now. Chris blurs the lines between real and unreal in his work, much like in post-truth politics.
  • The hand gestures, facial expressions and mannerisms of Hitler were all rehearsed, he wasn’t always authentic in his presentation, attending many photo shoots where he would pose.
  • As an artist and even a human being, we change over time. An artist can’t be expected to do the same content, presentations or show time and time again. There will be and has to be natural variation.
  • Authenticity is challenging when performing repetitive material, but finding genuineness in the fakeness helps.
  • Allowing creativity to flow without the pressure of success can be freeing.
  • Audience perception shifts based on how and where art is presented.
  • Timing and building audience expectations are key in comedy.

BEST MOMENTS

“Art is the lie that shows the truth”

“To stop myself from going mind I do find myself doing things different”

“Some of them are going to brilliant [shows] some of them are going to be shit”

“I'm interested in where this sort of boundary between real and unreal is, you know, where it's art and where it's art, where it's real and artificial."

"People like to feel clever, the audience like to feel included, the audience like to go, ah, I got that."

The Secret of Spiritual Transformation with Allan Kleynhans - Part Two06 Sep 202300:47:14

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In the second episode of my two-part special, coach and mentor Allan Kleynhans talks about the human revolution that occurred taking him from a life buried in drug addiction and destructive beliefs to knowing for the very first time in his life what he wanted to do with his life, and his journey to becoming a world-class coach helping others to dissolve the blocks that stop them from realising their fullest potential. Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Allan knows that anyone can change their life if they truly have the desire. He was at rock bottom but discovered he had all the tools he needed to change things.
  • Coaching and personal development is real, it can change anyone’s life.
  • Allan doesn’t care what anyone says about organised religion now, he doesn’t believe in it at all, it is a man-made construct that is built upon a foundation of power and control. Unity and faith are the true paths to religion and God.
  • The current education system indoctrinates children to believe that they’re wrong. That institutions are always right and your creativity is wrong.
  • If you are taught autonomy, power and creativity then you become a free thinker.
  • To know what love is, you have to love yourself first. If you want to change the world you need to love yourself and your family and people.
  • For any new technique to work for you, such as affirmations or meditation, you have to be consistent and open-minded.
  • Einstein predicted that the average human being will only utilise 0.5% of their potential in their lifetime. The potential anyone can unlock is limitless.

BEST MOMENTS

‘If I can change my life anybody can’

‘A lot of people don’t understand or they don’t believe, their perception is that coaching or transformational work is just fluff but it’s not’

‘I came to the conclusion that religion is a load of sh*t”

‘Religion is finding god in yourself, living in a space of peace and love for yourself, respecting yourself and respecting all of love, that’s spirituality’

‘The [education] system was systemically created by powerful people, powerful people in business and the church do not want people to be self-empowered’

‘We all have unlimited potential'

The Secret of Spiritual Transformation with Allan Kleynhans - Part One29 Aug 202300:45:58

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. In the first of an incredible two-part episode, I talk to Master Coach, Speaker and Mentor Allan Kleynhans. Allan shares his extraordinary life story charting his childhood in the racist and segregated South Africa of the 1960s and 70s, through military service and the horrors of the Angolan Civil War to a life plagued with guilt and shame and inevitable alcohol and substance abuse.

Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • We are all moulded and formed by what we are surrounded by as children. Most people’s value systems and beliefs are formed by age 7 and unless this is questioned, they’ll continue to see the world in the same way.
  • Witnessing police brutality from a white officer to a black man is what created the long-lasting feeling of being unsafe, a feeling Allan couldn’t shake for many years. He lived in a tough neighbourhood and was also bullied at school. Violence was part of daily life.
  • After finishing school, Allan went straight into the military where his exposure to brutal violence continued.
  • After leaving Angola, Allan felt very conflicted by what he had witnessed and been a part of and the religious upbringing he had experienced.
  • A lot of us don’t work through our traumatic experiences, we suppress them. Allan discovered after leaving the military, that he needed to learn to process what he had experienced so it wouldn’t permanently damage him.
  • Reading Napoleon Hill’s classic work, ‘Think and Grow Rich’, was the catalyst that made Allan realise he needed to change his life.
  • You can read every book but until you are ready to start to heal yourself it’s only knowledge you have, nothing more.
  • Allan attended a Tony Robbins event and incredibly was able to share his story, make Tony cry and even get a hug. Tony advised him to let go of the past and embrace love.
  • We have to let go of all feelings of shame to move forward, shame is directly associated with self-annihilation.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Most people will keep living out of the paradigm that they’ve created in their earliest years'

‘Traumatising experiences are deeply ingrained and we remember them’

‘I became obsessed with learning’

‘Until you can do really deep healing on yourself, it’s just stuff, knowledge that you have’

‘I’ll never forget it, it was like he [Tony Robbins] poured love into me with his eyes, his intention is really powerful and really pure’

‘That was the first time I felt unconditional love from a human being and this was a stranger’

‘Our shame silences us’

The Incredible Science of Super Recognition with Professor Josh Davis23 Aug 202300:50:27

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me, your host, Caroline Partridge. In this amazing episode, I talk to the hugely knowledgeable Professor Josh Davis about his groundbreaking work in the field of super recognition. We unravel the science behind super recognition and look at the crippling and rarely considered effects of genetic prosopagnosia or 'face blindness'. Josh shares some staggering statistics about super-recognisers and reveals the three critical factors in recognising faces. You can also follow the link to take a test to see if you have what it takes to be a super recogniser.

Please join me as we look at life through a familiar looking lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Genetics plays a big role in how good we are at recognising faces.
  • Shy people don´t tend to be super recognisers.
  • Only about 0.5% of the population are super-recognisers.
  • Super-recognisers are better than computers.
  • Lockdown and CoVid may have negatively impacted facial recognition abilities.
  • Some people suffer from face blindness to the point where they cannot recognise loved ones.
  • Often, prosopagnosia is only diagnosed when a child goes to school.
  • Twenty super recognisers identified 600 London rioters.
  • Balaclavas do not always prevent identification.
  • Super recognisers also spot stalkers and find missing people.

BEST MOMENTS

‘It (face recognition) is probably the strongest heritable cognitive skill we know of.’

‘It's exposure to people that makes you better at face recognition in general.’

‘Super recognisers also recognise that they've never seen a face before. ´

In this episode, I talk with the brilliant writer and author Lara Pawson about current perceptions that surround writing, and she describes the fascinating and unconventional approach she had to writing her latest genre-defying work 'Spent Light'. We interrogate the idea of failure and what it means, and discuss solidarity and belonging, in light of Lara's latest review of the National Theatre production 'Grenfell'.

Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • There is no right or wrong way to write. Try things to stretch yourself creatively.
  • Take risks. Try new things. That is where the gold is.
  • The written word, plays, films, and art are galvanizing.
  • You may feel that individually we can't have an impact, but lots of voices together make a difference.
  • We all need to make an effort, stand up, and use our voices.

BEST MOMENTS

‘You have the freedom to create what you want to create.’

‘What we see with our eyes isn't actually what our brain tells us we're seeing.’

‘People aren´t swayed by facts they are swayed by emotion.’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Lara Pawson is a writer. Her third book, Spent Light, will be published by CB editions in January 2024. If it fits a genre, it is an ambiguous one. It follows her fragmentary memoir, This Is the Place to Be, which was shortlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize, the Bread & Roses Prize, and the PEN Ackerley Prize. Her first book, In the Name of the People: Angola's Forgotten Massacre, was a work of investigative journalism, travel, and memoir. Published in 2014, it was longlisted for the Orwell Prize, shortlisted for the Bread & Roses Prize, and was a runner-up for the Royal Africa Society Book of the Year. It came out of her work for the BBC World Service, in particular, her time as a correspondent in Angola from 1998 to 2000. Lara now lives in London with her husband and her dog.

The Freedom in Forgetting with Carol Pyke19 Jun 202401:04:15

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I talk to inspiring Queen of Sparkle and the most sophisticated 5 year old you'll ever meet Carole Pyke. Carole is a medical anomaly, a two time stroke survivor and one of only 13% of stroke survivors who suffered a bleed on the brain, which left her with 5 years worth of conscious memory and no recollection of what life was like before 2019. Carole shares the fascinating story of how her hidden disability has changed her perspective on life - how the doors of possibility have flung open and how she motivates others to accept the present with gratitude, embody their uniqueness and show up unapologetically. So please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Carole Pyke, a two-time stroke survivor, lives with only five years of conscious memory due to a bleed on the brain, which has significantly impacted her identity and daily life.
  • Embracing the present and focusing on moving forward, rather than trying to reclaim the past, is crucial for navigating life's challenges and finding happiness.
  • Resilience is a skill that can be developed by recognising one's ability to overcome obstacles, no matter how small or large they may seem.
  • Identity is shaped by our memories and experiences, but it is also a choice in how we define ourselves and the stories we tell about who we are.
  • Comparison can be a useful tool for understanding the world, but it should never be the basis for how we live our lives or measure our self-worth.
  • True success and happiness come from discovering and embracing one's unique "flavour" or essence, and fearlessly sharing it with the world.
  • Reframing challenges as adventures and focusing on possibilities rather than limitations can lead to a more fulfilling and joyful life.
  • Societal conditioning often pushes us to chase external markers of success, but true contentment comes from within and appreciating what we already have.

BEST MOMENTS

"I say the past informs the present because quite literally your past has set you up for now, but it doesn't determine how it is that you move forward unless you choose to."

"I believe that there are people who found the extra in their ordinary, and that's the element that makes them extraordinary."

"Your job is to find your flavour and then sprinkle that wherever you go. Season every dish with your flavour."

"I often say things like guns do not kill people. People with guns kill people."

"I see life as this amazing adventure and I'm an intrepid explorer."

Using Horticulture as a Form of Activism with Mak Gilchrist08 Aug 202301:06:59

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me, your host Caroline Partridge. Today I talked to the Creative Director and Founder of the Edible Bus Stop Mak Gilchrist. Mak is also a good friend and longtime plant activist. In our conversation, she shares with me her 'Why' around the conception of the EBS and how her work has grown from its roots in community projects in public spaces to exploring the biosonification of plants to create mind-blowing music and visuals.

Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Taking a neglected public space and using plants to transform it into a pleasant, more visible space is a powerful way to stop it from being quietly passed into private hands.
  • Playful projects like mini edible gardens make it fun for people to engage with and benefit from plants.
  • Trees and plants have the opposite effect of the broken window, they instantly make a place more positive and attractive.
  • Being around plants improves our health.
  • Plants produce micro-vibrations as they grow, capturing those as data and using a program means those movements can be translated into music.
  • If the sound of the music changes when you touch a plant, you really understand that we have an impact on them.
  • As a collective we can really shift things and make meaningful changes.
  • Immersive experiences have an emotional impact.
  • Every area should have somewhere green that is pulsing with life.

BEST MOMENTS

‘What I do is horticulture as protest, and as activism.’
‘The work we do is a catalyst for other things to happen.’
‘The rhythms are supplied by plants.’
‘At a very raw stage, you can just hear the plant interact with you.’

Culture and Communication with Christine Mullaney01 Aug 202301:03:50

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me, your host Caroline Partridge. Today I talked to communication coach Christine Mullany about her unique training blending brain function, culture, and communication. We discuss the enormous effect of mindset on the way we express ourselves vocally, society's bias around regional accents, and the difference between mimicking and mirroring the voices we hear. Christine also talks vulnerably about her own journey through unprocessed trauma and the inevitable impact it had on her health.
Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Understand your brain, then the brains of others.
  • Linguistics plays a role in communication, so communicating in a 2nd language is difficult.
  • When you better understand yourself, what you have to offer, and learn to effectively communicate your mindset shifts.
  • Overriding the communication norms, you were raised with is hard.
  • Accent bias is real. Sometimes you need to tweak your accent and adjust your diction.
  • Mirroring helps you connect but don´t mimic.
  • What you say to your boss and how you frame things will be different than how you speak to a colleague.

BEST MOMENTS
‘Every person we communicate with needs something different.’
‘Different countries have different conventions when it comes to communication. ´
‘Sometimes different diction is required.’

'Art is a Lie That Tells The Truth' with Chris Dobrowolski25 Jul 202301:11:12

Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me, your host Caroline Partridge. Today I have the absolute pleasure of talking to artist, sculptor, and performer Chris Dobrowolski. Apart from being a brilliant artist, Chris is an exceptional storyteller and in our entertaining conversation, he recounts his journey into art as well as his attempted escape from Art School. He explains the influence of the deceptive nature of modern-day post-truth politics on his latest work, and we discuss the importance of experimentation in art, the emergence of the YBAs, and ask how do you measure what makes a successful artist?
Please join me as we look at art through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • You learn by trying new things and sometimes failing.
  • When portraying the real world, you need to include elements that reflect the truth.
  • Art reflects your perception of the world.
  • Chris’ art is often shared as performance lectures, or explanations that are conducted through unexpected mediums.
  • Young British Artists (YBA) is a great example of incredible marketing.
  • Art is no longer just about sculptures or something that is hung on walls.
  • When you look at art and your interaction with that art you become part of the art, making it live.

BEST MOMENTS
‘It's not about being the best drawer, it's not about being the best at XYZ. It's about exploring things. ´
‘There's something inherently paradoxical about the artistic process.’
‘My work is about what’s true and what’s a lie.’
‘There´s a difference between reacting and responding.’

The Interplay Between Genetics and Experience with Dr Robert Willson20 Jun 202301:01:19

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Perception Podcast with me your host Caroline Partridge. Today I talk to Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Greenwich, Dr Robert Willson. In this illuminating conversation, we explore the origins of and misconceptions around Evolutionary Psychology. We look at the interaction between genetics and experience, especially with regard to human sexual behaviour and gender identity.

Please join me as we look at life through a different lens.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Evolutionary psychology examines cognition and behaviour from a modern evolutionary perspective.
  • Some argue that human behaviour has to be understood within the context of human evolution.
  • Evolution impacts how we behave, but things like the fight or flight system are now largely redundant.
  • Genetics and experience both have an impact, e.g., intelligence is shaped by both.
  • What drives us is complex. evolution that plays a role, but other things do too e.g. social and cultural factors.
  • For humans, sexual behaviour is not only about fertility.
  • Gender is not based solely on genetics it is also impacted by social factors and some think that developmental events in the womb, also play a role.
  • Gender can be influenced by socio-cultural factors.
  • Society still treats boys and girls differently, despite trying not to.
  • There is far more overlap between genders and racial groups than differences.
  • Looking at average differences e.g. men are stronger and navigate better than women is misleading. It does not mean all men are like that, or that all women are always weaker than all men or worse navigators.
  • We all share a lot of genetic material with others. It is the small amount of material we do not have in common with others that evolution works with.

BEST MOMENTS

‘We use sexual behaviour as a way of bonding with people.’

‘Maybe our brains aren't actually that fit for purpose anymore.’

‘Evolutionary psychology basically argues that the human mind and human behaviour have also been shaped by evolution.’

‘Evolution can help us understand some things. But societal and cultural factors also are important.’

‘There's always an interaction between our genetic makeup, and our life experiences.’

‘Despite our best efforts, we treat infants that we perceive as male differently than we do, infants that we perceive as female.’

‘Evolution might have primed us to do these things, but there´s always a choice.
