Sweets are the nemesis of breast cancer survivorship diets, right? Not so fast. There’s not a black or white answer to that question. When you’re deciding whether or not a particular sweetener (like maple syrup!) is “safe” for your survivorship diet, I encourage you to consider the facts, as well as the current breast cancer survivorship diet recommendations to help you make your decision. In today’s episode, I bring those facts on this particular sweetener and why this delectable syrup is one you may want to consider (within the guidelines, that is).

After today’s episode you’ll understand:

  • The five variables to consider when choosing a sweetener

  • The health implications of including maple syrup in your diet

  • How to fit maple syrup (and other sweeteners) into your life

Do You Have an Altered Relationship With Food After Treatment? 30 Mar 202600:21:55

If ever there were a topic that doesn’t get nearly enough attention it’s this: what happens to your relationship with food after treatment. Yes, there’s plenty of conversation about what to eat and what to avoid after breast cancer. But crucially, there’s much less about the guilt, fear and second-guessing about food that can slip in and take over your daily life. There’s guilt about what you ate before diagnosis. Fear about what you eat now. In this episode, I unpack why this happens, how fear of recurrence is often behind that thinking, and why the restrictive eating you’re engaging in won’t deliver the peace of mind you crave.

After today’s episode you’ll understand:

  • Why an altered relationship with food after treatment is common, and completely understandable

  • How restriction doesn’t equal control

  • Why the right kind of support matters

The Difference Between Estrogen and Phytoestrogen23 Mar 202600:24:27

If you’ve ever spiraled after reading, “There’s estrogen in food, be sure to avoid it at all costs,” this episode is for you. After spending time in a private breast cancer Facebook group recently, I was reminded how quickly breast cancer nutrition misinformation spreads. I know, I know. . .the members are just trying to ‘help’ each other out. Good intentions? Absolutely. Accurate science? Not necessarily. In this episode, I break down the difference between estrogen and phytoestrogens, explain why they are not interchangeable, and share what current research actually says about phytoestrogens in foods you may be (unnecessarily) avoiding.

After today’s episode you’ll understand:

  • Why phytoestrogens aren’t the same as human estrogen

  • Why current research doesn’t support avoiding phytoestrogen-containing plant foods after hormone receptor-positive breast cancer

  • Why personal nutrition anecdotes don’t substitute for nutrition science

Is Your Diet Making You Miserable?16 Mar 202600:19:15

How many times have you white-knuckled your way through a strict, rule-driven, hyper-vigilant, inflexible meal in the hopes it would make you feel “safe”? Regardless of how convincing that voice in your head sounds, you know the one, “You must be vigilant with your diet or you’ll bring back your cancer!”, it doesn’t work that way. And yet, so many survivors believe that the more miserable the diet, the more effective it must be. In this episode, I’m talking about the types of breast cancer diets that practically guarantee miser, and why “not really living” is not the goal of survivorship. If your current approach to eating feels heavy, rigid, or joyless, this episode is your reminder that there is another way.

After today’s episode you’ll understand:

  • Suffering doesn’t equal safety

  • Rigidity drains joy

  • Empowerment > deprivation

The Worst Kind of Nutrition Advice09 Mar 202600:16:38

In a recent workout class my partner was struggling to do all of the exercises. Turns out, he has a condition that’s significantly impacted by diet. Unfortunately, he’d received inaccurate nutrition advice and was feeling the effects. The advice wasn’t malicious. It was just unqualified. Breast cancer survivors deal with this all the time. You may not experience physical symptoms from inaccurate nutrition advice, but you do feel the mental stress of wondering, “Am I doing this right, can I trust this information or is there a better approach for me?” In this episode, I’m talking about why credible guidance matters!

After today’s episode you’ll understand:

  • Not all nutrition advice is created equal

  • Lack of symptoms doesn’t mean lack of impact

  • How credible guidance brings peace of mind

What to Eat When You Don't Know What to Eat02 Mar 202600:21:34

You know that moment. You’re hungry. You open the fridge. You stare. Maybe shuffle a few containers around like the answer is hiding behind the almond milk. Then you close the door… and walk away. Not because there’s no food. But because deciding what to eat has become exhausting. Before breast cancer, if you were hungry, you ate. Maybe you thought about whether something was “healthy.” Maybe you wondered if it was “fattening.” But you didn’t stand there wondering if your lunch choice has a breast cancer connection. Now? You can’t imagine opening your refrigerator, taking out food and sitting down to enjoy it without overthinking or ruminating for hours about your decision. You just don’t know what to eat! If this sounds like you, I’m so glad you’re here!

After today’s episode you’ll understand:

  • What “I don’t know what to eat” truly means

  • Three things to look for when you’re indecisive about food

  • What to put on your plate when you’re just not sure

Breast Cancer Nutrition Habits: The Clarity Series Part 1: Decide Which Breast Cancer Nutrition Habits to KEEP05 Jan 202600:35:49

Have you ever wondered why you stay stuck in the same unhelpful nutrition habits, year after year? Eating to potentially reduce your recurrence risk isn’t just following food rules or structured diets; it’s getting crystal clear and brutally honest about your own nutrition habits. Identifying habits that serve you, those that don’t, and understanding what’s truly possible for you to achieve with your food choices after cancer is the key to ending your worry about every bite you take. Even after finishing breast cancer treatment and promising yourself you’d eat perfectly, let’s be honest. . .you’re not sticking with that breast cancer eating plan you swore you’d follow. How NOT to Do Thanksgiving24 Nov 202500:13:16

Thanksgiving is days away, and yes, you need a strategy! Why? The Best Vegetable You Can Eat!17 Nov 202500:17:03

Let me guess. You try really, really hard to eat as many vegetables as you can, as often as you can. And I applaud you for that! The problem you run into is not having them on hand and ready to grab so when you DO want them you’re not spending time prepping them first. The other issue? You know veggies are good for you, but you’re still a bit confused because you’re unsure which is better; potatoes or peas, broccoli or beets, carrots or cucumbers. Seriously, it’s all so confusing! In today’s episode I clear up that vegetable confusion for you and give you one less excuse for not getting that recommended number of servings per day! Join me, won’t you?

How Practical is Your Post-Treatment Diet?10 Nov 202500:19:51

When you’re trying to eat in a way that supports your breast and overall health after treatment ends, it’s not uncommon to try following a diet that “in theory” sounds great, but in reality is 100% impractical to execute on a daily basis. In my Peaceful Plate program there are five principles I share for eating with peace after treatment ends; one of them is PRACTICAL, as in, how practical is the dietary approach you’ve decided to take? Let’s explore that together in this episode, join me!

Why Survivorship is a Different Kind of Hard03 Nov 202500:23:25

After you’ve finished breast cancer treatment it’s common to think about how you’ll move forward. You probably think all the hard stuff is behind you and you’ll know exactly what to do now that diagnosis and treatment are in the rearview mirror. You think you’ve armed yourself with information about how to eat well so you can move into that “post-treatment phase” feeling confident. Except. . .no one told you to expect that sneaky, pervasive anxiety you feel about your food. In this episode I explore why it may feel like you’re in unchartered food territory with no clue how to get yourself back on solid ground.

Ending Food Fright Series Part IV: Not Every Food Decision Is Life or Death27 Oct 202500:18:42

Trusting yourself around food after breast cancer treatment ends feels risky, but only when you second-guess yourself because you think there’s a “right or wrong way” to eat now. Because you don’t trust yourself, you create food rules and highly structured order around meals, snacks, grocery shopping and dining out in order to stop feeling like every food decision IS a matter of life or death. In this final episode of my Four-Part Ending Food Fright series, I share why that’s not the way to navigate your food and offer options for “doing” your food differently.

Ending Food Fright Series Part III: Why You Need to Stop the Mental Food Chatter20 Oct 202500:22:00

Mental food chatter is often referred to a “food noise”; it’s those persistent, intrusive thoughts about food that can distract you from your daily activities. It hums in the background of your mind, never in “off” mode. Mental food chatter can show up as cravings, planning and re-planning meals, and other behaviors I highlight in this episode. Is there a way to stop the mental food chatter? You know I’ve got you covered on that. . .tune in to Part III of my Ending Food Fright series to learn what mental food chatter is really about, what causes it, and tips for shutting it down!

Ending Food Fright Series Part II: You’re Not Doing Your Food Wrong13 Oct 202500:17:13

What’s “trust” have to do with your breast cancer nutrition? EVERYTHING. When you don’t trust yourself to make the right food decisions or know what’s best to eat, the tendency is to fall apart about your food. . .literally. I talk about trusting yourself around food A LOT, and in this second of my four-part series for October, I dig in to where trust comes into play around the idea that you’re doing your food wrong. Which, by the way, you’re not! Join me as I explore the definition of trust and show you how trusting yourself (and your food!) supports your surthrivorship in a big way.

Ending Food Fright Series Kickoff06 Oct 202500:26:37

Just because you’re “done” with treatment, it doesn’t mean you’re “done” with the fear, anxiety and uncertainty you experience during ALL the months of the year - including OCTOBER. This is where food comes into the equation; any trepidation you feel about not eating the “right” food is heightened this month, because EVERYTHING about breast cancer is heightened this month - and it’s unsettling. That’s why for the entire month of October I’m doing a four-part “Ending Food Fright” series to help you lay the groundwork for eating with peace, not panic (or fright!), and enjoying your food through October and beyond. What Happens When You Don’t Eat Enough Produce?22 Sep 202500:20:47

Do you ever skip fruits and vegetables, and then feel guilty or anxious about it? You’re not alone. When you don’t eat enough produce on a daily basis, it can make it harder to get the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants your body needs, and the stress over “not eating right” can ramp up your food anxiety in a hot minute! In this episode, I explore why skipping produce can leave you feeling off balance, both physically and emotionally, and share practical tips for adding more fruits and vegetables in a way that feels doable and practical. You’ll also hear real-life examples about how I help my clients put more plants on their plates.

Why You Need a "Forever" Eating Plan15 Sep 202500:20:45

It’s true, women in the breast cancer community are curious about strict, rule-based eating plans promising to provide optimal treatment outcomes or prevent recurrence. Sadly, rather than deliver on what they promise, these diets create stress, anxiety, and confusion around food. The outcome? Diet abandonment, followed by guilt, shame and feeling like a failure. Not what you want from an eating plan, eh? In this episode, I explain why a “forever” eating plan, one that’s flexible, nourishing, and truly sustainable, is your key to eating with peace. . .forever.

The Best Diet After Hormone-Driven Breast Cancer (2024)01 Sep 202500:19:32

It's Labor Day 2025 and I'm taking a little break! I'll be back next Monday with a new episode, but for today, I'm sharing one of my most popular episodes. If you're new to me you may have missed it, and if you heard it back in June of 2024, it's time for a refresher! Enjoy the episode and be sure to let me know your thoughts about it by leaving a review! Thanks :)_____________________________

Now that you’ve finished treatment, no doubt you want to know exactly what’s best to eat to reduce your recurrence risk. Because you’re led to believe there’s one single diet that will make that happen, it can feel frustrating not to find a consistent answer about what that diet looks like. In this episode I invite you to ask a different question; “What’s best for me to eat after hormone-driven breast cancer to end my panic about recurrence risk?”

Worse, no one seems to really get why you’re asking such “specific” questions in the first place. If you’re ready to learn why survivors are handed oversimplified advice, why you can’t get your questions answered, and the antidote to “just eat healthy”, this episode is a must-listen!

I’m Good… Until I’m Not: Breaking the Strict-Eating Cycle After Breast Cancer11 Aug 202500:21:14

How often have you said this about your post-treatment diet, “I was doing so well, and then everything fell apart.”? If you’ve said it even once, this episode is for you. Today I’m talking about the exhausting pattern so many hormone receptor-positive breast cancer survivors fall into: eating super ‘clean,’ then slipping, then swinging back to strict rules out of fear, guilt, or shame. This isn’t a willpower issue, it’s a trauma-driven response to food and it’s incredibly common after hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. If you're tired of starting over, feeling stuck, or believing the problem is you, join me, because I’m sharing a secret. . .there is another way.

Why Giving Up Sugar Feels Right, But Never Lasts04 Aug 202500:20:32

If you’ve ever sworn off sugar, felt totally “in control” for a while… then found yourself face-first in a bag of cookies, this episode is for you. I’m digging into why giving up sugar feels like the right move after hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, and why it almost always leads to guilt, cravings, and spirals. You’ll learn what’s really driving that all-or-nothing pattern, and how to take your power back without rigid rules, restriction, or shame.

This is messaging that refuses to die!
