Building Modern Day Payroll Resilience with Andy Nicol #8515 Jun 202200:58:01

Nick Day is joined on The Payroll Podcast sofa by Andy Nicol, a former British Lion and Scotland International Rugby Captain, member of the BBC Sport team and CEO of ABSTRACT an award-winning learning and development company specialising in Coaching Leadership, Resilience and Decision-Making.  🏉🏉

In today’s episode, Nick will be asking Andy about building modern-day resilience through his experiences as he transitioned from elite sport to the media and then to the business world through his journey from the changing room to the green room, to the modern-day boardroom.

What Andy has learned during his rugby career has helped him in his media career and the skills he has developed in his TV work have helped him in his business work and this has driven Andy to focus on supporting boardrooms with the ABSTRACT Accelerate Programmes, which won the Diversity Initiative of the Year at the Women in Finance Awards in Dublin, and has so far helped over 2000 women in UK, Ireland and worldwide to develop and manage their careers.

Andy won 23 caps for Scotland, was captain of Bath, when he became the first British player to lift the Heineken Cup in 1998 and he even captained Scotland in 2000 when Scotland beat England 19–13 at a rain-soaked Murrayfield to prevent England from achieving the Grand Slam! So Andy is someone who certainly knows what it takes to lead, be led and operate at the highest level, which is why Nick is delighted to welcome him to The Payroll Podcast show!

In this “Building Modern-Day Payroll Resilience” episode with Andy Nicol on The Payroll Podcast, we also explore:
  1. 🚀Could you give us a quick tour of your career to date that led you from the green room to the boardroom?
  2. 🚀How would you define resilience?
  3. 🚀How has resilience through the years changed?
  4. 🚀When did you see this shift start to change and why is it critical that businesses and leaders are aware of this shift and change?
  5. 🚀Can you share examples of people showing resilience?
  6. 🚀 The Kübler Ross’ Change Curve - how it can help you to understand resilience and our reactions to setbacks.
  7. 🚀Andy's 5 pillars to help build modern-day resilience

An experienced Board level executive, with 20 years of experience delivering large-scale transformations, Abigail is a skilled strategic and customer and commercially focused leader who is currently responsible for leading Zellis operations across the UK, Ireland, and India to support over five million colleagues every month with HR and payroll services.

This episode is focused on the recent statement made by Chancellor, Rishi Sunak which announced an NI and tax rise, which will take effect from July – but is the payroll industry ready to manage these changes now?

For those tuning in who are unfamiliar, in the Chancellor's recent spring statement, Rishi Sunak announced that billions of pounds will be put back into the pockets of hard-working people with his unveiling of a new Tax Plan to ease the rising cost of living and to deliver the biggest cut to personal taxes in a quarter of a century.

Although these tax cuts will benefit 30 million UK workers through rise in National Insurance thresholds, which will see the typical employee over £330 in the year, these changes will not impact the typical employee until July.

However, Zellis believe the payroll industry is ready to implement these changes now! You may have even read John Petter’s recent letter published in the Financial Times that urges the Chancellor to act now. If you did, not do worry as Nick asks all these questions to Abigail for her thoughts on the Spring statement!

In this "The Payroll industry is Ready Now with Payroll Industry COO, Abigail Vaughan on The Payroll Podcast, we also explore:

  1. What was payroll industry was expecting in Rishi Sunak's Spring statement?
  2. What part of the statement surprised you?
  3. Could the Chancellor could have been more ambitious on the timing?
  4. How hard is it to amend payroll software when legislation changes?
  5. How much notice do you ‘usually’ get?
  6. What will the delay mean to the average worker?
  7. How does this compare the changes required for COVID and Furlough?
  8. What happens next think?
  9. Will employees now have to wait until July for this benefit?
  10. Can you tell us more about Zellis?

Last year, the UN theme for International Women's Day was "Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world", and this year, in 2022 the UN theme is "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow", to highlight the contribution of women around the globe, who are helping to build a more sustainable future for all.

Well, Rachel who joins me today works with women on developing confidence in all areas of life, but she also works with businesses to improve and support gender diversity in the workplace.  We celebrate International Women's day with this special episode to discuss how women who aspire to become payroll leaders in the future can unlock their potential!

Recent data has shown that nearly 40% of UK FTSE 100 board positions are now held by women, compared with 12.5% just 10 years ago, Rachel is helping the UK to continue this trend. In fact, Rachel has developed a corporate group coaching program specifically designed for women to grow in confidence & communication skills, to help women feel empowered to proactively co-create their career path with the organisations they work for.

Rachel is here to help us celebrate International Women's Day and introduce us all to her 3 key pillars that inspire & shape her work: Mindset, Confidence & Communication Skills.

In this "Celebrating International Women’s Day" episode with Rachel Gilfrin on The Payroll Podcast, we also explore:

  1. Tell us a little about the shift in mindset that inspired you to launch your career and business?
  2. “Ladies, unlock your potential” – why do you think many women struggle to be seen or understood at work?
  3. What more can businesses do to improve the representation of women?
  4. Can you talk us through why confidence is often at a low and your process for unlocking potential and overcoming anxieties?
  5. What are your 3 pillars for success when it comes to empowering women?
  6. How important is Mindset, Confidence & Communication when it comes to creating future leaders?
  7. How does your corporate program help women to deal with common workplace challenges?
  8. Are you seeing more organisations bring their attention to gender diversity around this time?
  9. What would you like to see more organisations doing to create an environment where women feel empowered to co-create their career path?
  10. How can your coaching method help female leaders who perhaps are suffering from anxieties to overcome them?
  11. If you could pick the UN IWD focus for 2023, what would it be?
  12. Which women have really inspired you on your career journey?

Celebrating a Career in Payroll with Kate Upcraft #7515 Feb 202200:57:07

Probably the UK’s most prominent payroll expert, Kate Upcraft of Kateupcraft.com has decided to retire on 31st March 2022.

Kate spent 20 years plus at M&S latterly as Legislation Manager for the payroll function, where she supported a payroll of over 65,000 employees.  Since then Kat has gone on to forge a hugely successful career Managing, coaching, and mentoring others in the world of payroll.

Kate has created Policy and Research Functions and she had also been actively involved in high-level government lobbying to benefit and improve the payroll profession.

Recently, Kate was the recipient of the 'Accounting Excellence Award' for her outstanding contributions to the world of payroll awarded by the AccountingWeb.  Kate was also bestowed with the "Payroll Consultant of the Year Award" from the Global Payroll Association (GPA).

Kate is a renowned payroll character, influencer, speaker, lecturer, technical writer, consultant and in my view, just a great personality who has given everything to the profession and will leave a big hole in the payroll community when she finally hangs up her payroll boots at the end of March.

In her interview with host, Nick Day of JGA Recruitment, This is Kate's story - the highs, lows, memories, achievements, and the payroll friends she has made along the way.

We discover
  • What the word payroll means to KAte
  • How Kate began her payroll career
  • How Kate has seen the industry change
  • What excited and frustrated Kate about payroll
  • Kate's greatest achievements and memories
  • What will Kate miss the most?

Can we Automate Payroll? with Marc-Oliver Fiedler #7318 Jan 202200:38:22

Nick Day is joined on The Payroll Podcast by Marc-Oliver Fiedler, founder of Global Payroll Platform provider, PayZaar.

Can we Automate Payroll?

Marc is an experienced international payroll executive who brings to today’s show a strong background in setting up and scaling new payroll business models and new payroll technology-driven ventures within the B2B SaaS/Cloud space.

Before founding Payzaar, Marc held leadership roles at Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, and ADP.

While at ADP, Marc became intimately acquainted with the challenges payroll people face every day as well as the many limitations that existed within the solutions that were being provided by payroll providers at the time.

This experience led him Marc found Payzaar, an innovative global payroll management platform with a different model to the traditional large aggregators that dominate the market. Instead of providing payroll through a closed system of exclusive national providers, Payzaar is provider-agnostic, so companies can integrate with any provider they choose anywhere in the world – leading to clients enjoying greater flexibility, no lock-in effect, and significantly lower costs with shorter integration times.

When not focused on Payzaar, Marc is a keen tennis player, golfer, and bread baker! A hobby he picked up during the pandemic.

In this "Can we Automate Payroll?" episode with Marc-Oliver Fiedler on The Payroll Podcast, we also explore:

  1. What does the word “payroll” mean to you?
  2. How has payroll evolved?
  3. How has the Covid pandemic changed the payroll landscape?
  4. Why are so many payroll operations experiencing major transformations?
  5. What is the market telling you at Payzaar, and what is your perspective?
  6. Is it possible to automate payroll?
  7. What are the consequences of organizations undervaluing their payroll function?
  8. Where do you think payroll is going in the next 5 years?

Effective Payroll Data Gathering for DEI with Caroline Drake #7103 Dec 202100:26:59

Nick Day is joined on The Payroll Podcast by Caroline Drake, Chief People Officer at Award-winning payroll and HR solutions provider, Zellis!

For those not familiar with Zellis, here is a snapshot of the business in numbers

• They pay 5 million employees every month

• £28 bn+ pounds are paid out each year through their Managed Payroll Services

• And over 29% of the FTSE 100 are Zellis customers

These numbers also provide Zellis with access to big data. And, as part of the Zellis vision, which is to be a leader in pay, reward, analytics, and people experiences, they decided to develop a report, in cooperation with the Economist, that was focused on diversity data to determine what it is that is holding back progress in delivering effective, data-led DEI campaigns.

And if you are wondering why a company, largely focused on payroll, decided to commission research on DEI data collection – stay tuned because you are about to find out!

Let’s just say, the results are fascinating!

In this "Effective Payroll Data Gathering for DEI with Caroline Drake #71" episode with Caroline Drake on The Payroll Podcast, we also explore:

  2. What was the inspiration behind the “Time to Act: Seven principles for effective DEI data gathering” report and what did this involve?
  3. The research report indicates that there is a Diversity Data deficit. What does it mean?
  4. Why is trust in the employer seemingly so important in making employees comfortable in sharing data?
  5. How can companies maintain sensitivity while categorising characteristics?
  6. How willing were employees to provide data in aid of ED&I programmes?
  7. How can companies make better use of the data they collect from their employees?
  8. Why did a company largely focused on payroll, commission research on DEI data collection?
  9. In terms of the findings, what were the Seven principles any company can apply to improve DEI data gathering going forward?

Cyber Security: Phishing, Ransomware and a Web of Lies with Bryan Seely #6425 Aug 202100:38:32

Nick Day is joined on The Payroll Podcast by Bryan Seely!

Bryan has advised the White House and is the only hacker and speaker who has successfully wiretapped the United States Secret Service and the FBI!

Later that year, my guest also de-anonymized the highly valued mobile app, Secret, which put him on the front page of Wired.com, CNNMoney, CNET, Forbes, and The Washington Post — all in the same day!

Seriously!

That is because Bryan is a world-famous Security Keynote Speaker, Ethical Hacker, Author and Former US Marine joining us today to talk about the importance of cyber security.

Bryan is passionate about fighting for consumers' rights and privacy and educating the public about staying safe in a constantly changing technology landscape. He currently lives in Seattle with his 2 children, and he now freelances as a cybersecurity consultant and advises John McAfee and his company MGT.

Now with 81% of UK SMEs confirming that they had suffered a data breach or cyber-attack, with a considerable two in five (37%) admitting they had suffered multiple breaches – I was compelled to invite Bryan to the show – because Payroll, in particular, is a department that is extremely vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

In this episode of the Payroll Podcast, we discuss the genuine cyber security threats that all payroll, HR and business professionals should be wary of to protect themselves, employees and organisations from phishing, ransomware and other cyber-related attacks.

In this "Cyber Security: Phishing, Ransomware and a Web of Lies" episode with Bryan Seely on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:
  1. Bryan, you became one of the world’s most famous hackers in 2014 – can you tell our listeners why?
  2. I understand the Secret Service called you a hero and praised your courage and integrity – what's the story?
  3. In the world of payroll and HR, we see increases in Payroll fraud, recruitment scams, data breaches and corporate espionage. Why is this?
  4. What can payroll, HR and business leaders do to protect themselves and their employees from phishing and ransomware attacks?
  5. Cyber and data security is a critical concern, and with payroll & HR departments so vulnerable to attack, what protocols will help keep data safe?
  6. How likely is it that one of our listeners suffers a ransomware attack (Spoiler alert: it is much higher than you might think)!
  7. What is it like inside the mind of a potential hacker or Cybercriminal?  What are they doing and thinking when they target a potential business for an attack?
  8. If you were a payroll or HR manager, what are the key questions you would ask your software provider to ensure you are secure?
  9. What advice would you give to help payroll & HR departments protect themselves and their employees from scam and phishing attempts?
  10. Cyber Fraud also extends to LinkedIn.  Can you tell our listeners why they need to be wary of the fake LinkedIn profiles and how they can identify one?
  11. You have, of course, written a book titled Cyber Fraud: The Web of Lies (available on Amazon) - we found out more about this best-selling book!

  1. Developing trust is going to be the key subject for today’s podcast and I think it is especially relevant for those working in senior leadership  related positions right now as organisations strive to maintain engagement, relevancy and stay ahead of the digital curve. So with this in mind, Stephen, I would love to know this – is trust a learnable skill?
  2. You say in your book that “Trust is a hard-edged, economic driver” – what do you mean by this?
  3. What initiatives do you see trust impacting Trust the most?
  4. So, in your view, Is trust earned or is trust given?
  5. You say in your book that “Trust is the new currency of our interdependent, collaborative world” – with this in mind, is it possible then to restore trust when it has been lost?
  6. You have a chapter in the book which talks about how “Families are organisations too” – I love this concept. Can you bring this concept to life for our listeners?
  7. Right now as many businesses evolve to working from home models of management, which requires trust for them to work optimally, what are the four questions you like to ask organisations that you state in your book, often result in “A-Ha” moments as a result!
  8. Where is leadership going?
  9. What’s the next “big thing?” in the world of Trust and Leadership?

Improving Financial Health through Payroll with James Herbert #5511 Mar 202100:33:17

Nick Day is joined on The Payroll Podcast sofa by James Herbert, Founder and CEO of Hastee, a revolutionary fintech business that drives financial health and productivity by enabling employees to choose when they receive their earned pay.

Hastee’s Earnings on Demand platform also provides financial education and management tools as well as rewards and benefits via the Hastee Card; the worlds’ first debit card that gives people dynamic access to their salary as they earn.

With two-thirds of UK workers affected by personal finance-related stress in 2020, but with less than one in five businesses offering a financial wellbeing programme to combat these challenges and with pay on demand services being a hot topic for payroll professionals right now, Nick thought this would be a great time to welcome James to the show!

In this “Improving Financial Health through Payroll episode with James Herbert, on The Payroll Podcast, we also explore:
  1. Could you provide us with your outlook on the impact of Coronavirus on workers and ultimately payroll?
  2. Pay on Demand services seems to be a hot topic for payroll professionals right now. Despite it being talked about, in a recent CIPP members survey only 12% of 413 payroll professionals surveyed believed pay-on-demand services were an attractive benefit for the workforce. With this in mind, I wondered if you could help explain the benefits of Hastee and how you are set up to help businesses?
  3. How does Hastee drive productivity and improve retention?
  4. What impact does liquidity have on mental wellbeing?
  5. Are there any Hastee success stories you can tell us about that really demonstrates the benefits of on-demand-pay for those still not convinced?
  6. Where do you think the responsibility for employee wellness really sits? Do you think wellness should fall under the responsibility of payroll?
  7. How simple is Hastee to integrate and use for payroll?
  8. How do you view the future of payroll?
