Episode 92 - The Joker Series That Is Totally Not a Jim Gordon Series (Except It Totally Is)

The Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime, turns 85 this year and both Andy and Michael thought that celebrating this would be a capital idea to devote an episode of this show to celebraing his birthday. Since they just did a "Best Of" type episode to celebrate Robin's birthday, the guys decided instead to talk about the 2021 Joker series that was written by James Tynion IV because it's about the Joker.

Actually, the series is a Jim Gordon series disguised as a Joker series, which is by no means a bad thing. Andy and Mike talk about all 15 issues and the annuals and break down what they liked about the story and what they didn't. Topics include the wonky continuity of the characters, the film noir nature to the early issues, Bane, how certain characters reminded the guys of Preacher, Oracle, and, of course, the Joker.

Next Time: Andy and Mike talk about some more recent Batman stories that also serve as anniversary issues.

Episdoe 91 - Year One Flashback Part 2

Travel back in time once again to hear "classic" audio!

This time out Andy and Mike finish up their extremely lazy reposting of audio that was supposed to be two episodes of Bailey's Batman Podcast and ended up being two episodes of Views from the Longbox and are now two episodes of Overlooked Dark Knight.

Ten years from now they will put it out again as two episodes of yet another show.

Anyway, the audio that time forget sees Andy and Mike wrapping up their talk about the Year One Annuals from 1995. They go over the origin of Poison Ivy, Man-Bat, The Riddler, and Robin, so a lot of the discussion revolves around those characters. There is also a lot of very positive talk about Chuck Dixon and while Andy and Mike still like his writing (go back and listen to the more recent episode about Batgirl: Year One) but they're not sure they would have been so effusive with the praise given...recent events.

This time out Andy and Mike cover two comics that have been released as facsimile editions over the past few years because the guys really love them. After a brief introduction where Andy and Mike blame each other for life decisions they dig into Batman #181, which was the first appearance of Poison Ivy. Then, after some podcast promos and vintage commercials and PSAs, they look at Batman #357, which was not only the first appearance of Killer Croc but also had a blink and you'll miss it first appearance of Jason Todd.

Seriously. He's in like one panel. It's barely an appearance.

Along the way the guys talk about why they love facsimile editions so much, Doctor Who, whether Robin is old enough to fancy a woman, the logistics of jumping out of a helicopter with a parachute, the brilliance of Don Newton and Alfredo Alcala's artwork, and much, much more!

Episode 81 - Happy Christmas 2023

Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about!

It's Christmas time, so Andy and Mike thought it would be fun to look at not one but two Yuletide themed Batman stories. Or, at the very least, two stories that take place at Christmas. First up is Brave and the Bold #184, where the Huntress of Earth-2 crosses over to Earth-1 to spend the holidays with her Uncle Bruce and ends up helping Bruce through a crisis of faith when it comes to light that Thomas Wayne might have been a criminal!

Spoiler warning...he wasn't.

Then they look at a story from DC Special Series #21, which featured early Batman work from Frank Miller. Batman is investigating some criminal activity and ends up having to save an ex-con who has had a change of heart because of his job as a department store Santa. There's also something about a star that was a running theme through that special. Mike also nearly ends the show when Andy makes a comment about All-Star Batman and Robin.

Episode 79: Please Hama Don't Hurt Em

Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about!

In this exciting episode Andy and Mike talk about the very brief seven issue Batman run written by Larry Hama. It was the dawn of a new age in Gotham. No Man's Land was over, a new century was beginning, and the Batman titles underwent a seismic creative shift with newer writers either taking on over taking over the exploits of the Dark Knight. Novelist Greg Rucka was writing Detective Comics. Devin Grayson, plucked from the cream of the fan fiction crop, took on new title Batman: Gotham Knights. But what about the flagship title Batman? Well, that fell to veteran writer and editor Larry Hama. Best known for his work on G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero and Wolverine, Hama jumped over to DC Comics to write one of their best known and most popular characters. It seemed like a good fit. Hama was known for world building and writing action packed stories with clever dialogue.

So why did his run last only seven issues?

Andy and Mike talk about all seven of those issues and try to answer that question by looking at Batman issues 575 to 581. They talk about characters such as Banner and Orca and the themes that Hama seemed to be exploring as well as the style of his writing, which didn't seem to mesh with the new Batman ethos. They also talk about the art by Scott McDaniel where a rare disagreement between the hosts breaks out in a fierce, no holds barred, two men enter, one man leaves Thunderdome battle.

Actually, it's a mild disagreement. That's all.

Episode 90 - Year One Flashback Part 1

Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about!

This time out Andy and Mike are presenting some "classic" audio from right before they started this show. Actually, the audio was first recorded in 2015 for the first version of Bailey's Batman Podcast and then Mike did what Mike usually does and sat on that audio for two years when he finally released the episodes on Views From The Longbox. Whatever the case, this is the first of a two part look at the Year One annuals from 1995. Well, those and an annual from 1990.

This whole thing was all over the place.

Anyway, in this first part the guys look at Batman Annual #14 from 1990, which featured the Post Crisis origin of Harvey Dent...Two-Face! Then they jump to 1995 and talk about Batman Annual #19, which has the origin of Scarecrow. These are deep dives into the thoughts Andy and Mike have about these characters complete with some tangents that are kind of fun.

Welcome back to The Overlooked Dark Knight, the podcast that shines a light on Batman stories hardly anyone talks about!

This time out Andy and Mike are throwing a birthday party for Robin! 85 years ago Dick Grayson was introduced in the pages of Detective Comics #38 and over the years there have been a number of Robins and the guys celebrate most of them by choosing eight and a half stories to discuss/gush over. To be fair, they were supposed to just talk about Dick Grayson and Tim Drake (who is turning 35 this year) but Mike didn't stick with that, so there are some Jason Todd stories in the mix as well. Andy was most amused by this. There are stories from the Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, the Post Crisis era, and even the Post Infinite Crisis era. There is also a lot of Chuck Dixon stories on the list. It was a fun conversation and the guys had a ball talking about the first superhero sidekick.

This time out Andy and Mike start an irregular series looking at the various Year One series that members of the extended Bat Family have received over the years. They start with Batgirl: Year One, a nine issue series that ran from December of 2002 to August of 2003. Written by Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon with art from Marcos Martin and Álvaro López, this series told the Post-Crisis/Post Zero Hour version of how Barbara Gordon became Batgirl, which Andy and Mike were quite fond of. They talk about the writing, the art, the retcons, and their problem with how James Gordon was portrayed at various points during the series. This is after a quick conversation about the Icons Unearthed: Batman docuseries that the guys recently watched thanks to a listener recomendation.
