On February 8th, 2016, my husband and I welcomed our first child into the world: Avery Violet Decker. Becoming a mother taught me the true meaning of unconditional love. Sadly, on March 9, 2017, Avery passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in her sleep. My world completely changed that tragic day. There is nothing more painful than losing a child. It changes every part of you. Grieving and mourning are the hardest work you will ever do. For me, I found such healing in connecting with other bereaved parents. My world turned upside down when my father had a heart attack in May of 2017. We spent five days fighting, praying, and hoping he would make a miraculous recovery, but it never came. My family and I said goodbye to him on May 22nd. The unexpected submersion into grief was by far the most difficult time of my life. Common thoughts included: Why are people saying “it never gets better”?! How am I ever supposed to function again? My life is over, right? During that time, I understood more of myself, I understood more of the world of grief, and I realized that there is a need for a greater understanding of loss for everyone. *Enter awkward stories of people who had no idea what to do or say around me after his death.* The best grief advice I ever got was “Face it now. Don’t wait til later.” And that’s just what I did. I found a great therapist who I saw weekly (though the first few sessions were just sobs), a psychiatrist who helped me appropriately medicate, and I started journaling about my grief. I know those few sentences make it seem so short and sweet– but it wasn’t. It was a lot of work. But I can confidently say I’m in the place where I am today because of the work I put in on myself. I went to a storytelling competition in July of 2017… and WON! It was the first time I felt blood pumping through my veins again. I tried to figure out how to recapture that feeling and turned to podcasting. I knew nothing about the craft at the time, other than a microphone was involved and that I was comfortable in front of one. I also wanted to create a store for modern sympathy gifts. After lots of late nights and Google rabbit holes, I eventually created the So Sorry For Your Loss podcast and blog and opened an ecommerce store called All The Skies. I have other resources too, like a Grief Resource Guide, Community, YouTube and social media accounts.

Hello! I'm Tommy Forsyth, and I'm passionate about breathwork and nervous system health. My journey of self-discovery and healing has led me to incredible techniques that help reduce anxiety, balance nervous system capacity, and deeply enrich the overall quality of life. Picture this: back in 2009, life had me in a tough spot with drug and alcohol addiction, even leading to homelessness. But guess what? That's just a chapter from my past that's set the stage for some pretty discoveries ahead that I can’t wait to share with you. On that journey I organically connected with this amazing breathing technique that I called “dynamic breathwork”, and oh boy, did it open up a whole new universe for me! As I dove into it, I discovered the wealth of science-backed information speaking to the deep effects on nervous system regulation. It was a true “Aha” moment that instantly elevated my own health practice and gave me the ability to move through suppressed emotions, severe anxiety, and panic attacks that I had battled for a lifetime. While I was already an NLP certified Life Coach and Heart Math meditation guide, bringing this particular type of breathwork into the mix created a whole new level of integration and nervous system health for me. It was truly life changing. Now, I'm all about spreading joy and inspiration, and helping lovely folks like you find their own inner joy, and live anxiety-free. Together, we're learning to fill every precious moment with intention and, of course, lots and lots of purposeful breaths. I created The Understanding Heart, a blog and Instagram account to help give women and families who have experienced pregnancy loss a space to grieve and share their stories. I had a miscarriage in early 2020 at 10 weeks and 5 days. It was my first pregnancy and we named him Anthony. As if the experience of losing our first pregnancy wasn’t enough, what we experienced after our loss was why I created this space. I realized there was no one to support the families through this experience. The miscommunication and heartache we experienced even after we were told there was no heartbeat still haunts me to this day. It’s my hope that we can continue to speak about these babies that didn’t make it earth-side to amplify the experiences of families experiencing pregnancy loss so they know they are not alone. Domenique Rice wears many hats – staunch activist, laid-back California transplant, savvy Brooklyn girl, superstar salesperson – but her most important role is that of (bereaved) mother of five. Domenique never had any reason to suspect that something was amiss in her second pregnancy, at least, not until it was already too late. Like most parents, stillbirth and preventative measures were never discussed with Domenique, leaving her completely blindsided when at 36.5 weeks pregnant she unexpectedly went into labor and her second child and first son, TJ, was born still. In between her morning "TJ coffee" where she holds space each day for her son, rocking a successful sales career, and loving on TJ's living siblings, Domenique is passionate about sharing her stillborn son, creating stillbirth and child death awareness, and connecting with other child death families to support them in their nontraditional parenthood. Award-winning investigative reporter and broadcast journalist, Angela Kennecke, has spent three decades keeping people informed on the evening news. Her investigative reports have resulted in changes to laws. She was named a 2021inductee to the South Dakota Hall of Fame. In recent years, many of Angela’s stories focused on the growing opioid crisis. On the day her 21-year-old daughter, Emily, died of an overdose, Angela was working on a story on Good Samaritan Laws and overdose deaths. Emily died of fentanyl poisoning. Angela has taken Emily’s story nationwide and even internationally. Angela speaks tirelessly about the issues surrounding opioid addiction, a parent’s frustration and sense of helplessness and tells it all from the perspective of a mother who has lost her child. Angela started a charity called “Emily’s Hope,” because she never gave up hope on her daughter and now wants to offer hope to other families struggling with addiction. Angela believes when tragedy and setbacks strike the only thing you have control over is your response. Angela’s response to the loss of her beautiful and beloved daughter is to turn heartbreak into action by erasing the stigma surrounding addiction and advocate for more funding, better treatment and more research and understanding of the disease claiming so many lives.

I have had many years of experience helping people while working in the healing arts field. Over the years I recognized that on a daily basis, most of my clients shared their stories of loss. Surviving the holidays when you've lost a loved one is a totally different experience that can seem unimaginable to get through. In this episode, Shauna shares tips for surviving, and even finding new joy and memories throughout the upcoming holiday season.
You may wish to... Find comfort in traditions that remind you of your loved one, or create new traditions altogether. Choose to celebrate or not celebrate depending on how you feel in your heart. Reach for help to make it easier to process your grief. Share memories of your loved one. Cut back on seasonal stressors, or anything that depletes you. Find new ways to take care of yourself as you process your loss.
Remember - while your celebrations may never be the same, they can still be filled with joy as you remember your loved one.
