Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) with Christiana Benson28 Sep 202401:17:48

Happy Autumn! We are ready for all things creepy, kooky, thrilling, and chilling this season...and what better way to kick it off than covering a horror story classic: Dr, Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! For this special episode, we are joined by Westmore family historian and great granddaughter of Ern Westmore: Christiana Benson. Christiana walks us through the techniques Wally Westmore used in special effects makeup to transform goodhearted doctor Dr. Jekyll into his evil persona Mr. Hyde. Once a heavily guarded cinema secret, we uncover all innovative artistry that made this look one of the most referenced of all time for this iconic character. We dissect our favorite scenes, brilliant acting by Fredric March and fellow cast members, and deeper meanings of this allegorical tale. What's your favorite interpretation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? Do you have any must-watches this fall? Reach out and let us know at @oldsoulmoviepodcast on Instagram!

Emma and Jack venture to the scenic countryside of the Salinas Valley where we see a modern tale of Cain and Able unfold. James Dean accompanies us with many smoldering looks as he tries to balance the good and evil within himself. We talk about movie adaptations of novels, following in the footsteps of parents, and how Abra looked old enough to be Cal's mom.

Casablanca (1942)26 Oct 201902:20:02

In this episode we find ourselves on the dusty streets of Casablanca. Emma can't believe that its Jack's first time watching, and the two break down every scene and all the times Humphrey Bogart says "here's looking at you kid". This classic makes us think of love triangles, modern day romances, and loyalty to causes bigger than ourselves. It really is the beginning of a beautiful podcast.

Laura (1944)05 Dec 202201:06:54

Obsession, mystery, and MURDER - all of these themes and more are covered in our latest episode: Laura (1944)! In Otto Preminger's classic noir, we uncover the drama behind-the-scenes and analyze how the story's onscreen tangled webs of truths and mistruths unfold. We are so excited to celebrate this Noirvember winner with you before the holidays!

And for those of you curious as to the origin of the Gene Tierney quote about her beauty, this reference was taken from a trivia note on IMDB :

"According to his daughter Victoria, Vincent Price felt that Gene Tierney had as much to do with this movie's success as Producer and Director Otto Preminger's direction: 'In his opinion, it was Gene Tierney's 'odd beauty' and underrated acting ability that made 'Laura' so popular', she said. 'He felt her beauty was both timeless and imperfect.'"

...so it was Vincent Price who made that reference-mystery solved!

Dr. Casaregola also walks us through various post-war written materials how they have been adapted to the screen from 1946 through today. The Birds (1963)13 Aug 202201:18:16

We're taking a spontaneous trip to Bodega Bay! Ahhhh fresh sea air, idyllic farms, friendly townsfolk...what could go wrong? That's right, we're covering an Old Hollywood classic: The Birds (1963)! Tippi Hedren captivates us as a San Fransisco socialite who follows a charming lawyer (and perfect stranger) to his childhood home, but soon finds herself to be the target of avian aggressors. We soar in and out of theories as to what this mysterious Hitchcockian movie means and why it's considered a significant feature. Pack your bags (or just pick up some things at the general store) and tune in for this creepy summer horror story!

It’s the mother of all screwball comedies…that’s right, we’re covering Bringing Up Baby (1938)! With our guest host Colin Campbell, we break down the art of the screwball comedy and walk through our favorite laugh-out-loud scenes of this tale about a flighty heiress roping in a high-strung paleontologist to care for her pet leopard, Baby, while he attempts to secure a $1 million donation for his museum from her rich aunt. This beloved Howard Hawks film has inspired endless films through today and we are thrilled to finally give it its chance to shine!

A newlywed couple decides to take their honeymoon on a trip across the western country in a new mobile home...only for it to become a pretty "rocky" adventure.  We touch upon how the "I Love Lucy" comedians conquered the big screen, why the road movie genre is a recipe for success, and what we love about tiny houses/school bus renovations.
