Karl Bushby set off from Chile in 1998. Since then he has walked across American and Asian continents, swam 186 miles (300km) across the Caspian Sea and fought off ice lumps and polar bears through the Bering Strait, all without using any form of transport.The former paratrooper has less than 2,000 miles (3219km) left to walk before he arrives at his home city of Hull.Mr Bushby, who is currently in Mexico waiting for a visa to complete his challenge, has said returning home will be a "very strange place to be" after being away for some 27 years.Following his 31-day swim across the Caspian Sea last year, Mr Bushby said he continued his journey to Azerbaijan and then through to Turkey.The traveller, originally from Sutton Park, said he "had to step aside" from his mission, named the Goliath Expedition, while he waited for a visa.He hopes to continue his trek, via Turkey, in August before entering Europe. Maj Gen Adrian Freer was commissioned into the Parachute Regiment in 1972. His regimental service included tours in all three parachute battalions. He saw operational service in Northern Ireland, the Falklands and also in Kosovo, when he led the UK Spearhead forces into the province in June 1999. She was left shocked by the sight of a badly injured soldier and recalled the heartbreaking moments of dealing with severely burned comrades.Her PTSD diagnosis came after a posting in Malaysia, where she saw a rapid decline in her mental health. She experienced severe sleep paralysis and nightmarish flashbacks which led to her return to the UK for mental health support.Living with PTSD is a continuous battle with high anxiety, Amber explained, feeling as though someone is constantly sitting on her chest. Once a bubbly and sociable person, she started to find social interactions overwhelming. The weight of Amber’s experiences soon became too much and tragically led her to multiple suicide attempts, despite the presence of her son in the same military house.When Amber returned to the UK, she found herself homeless after running out of money to pay for hotel rooms, so she reached out and found support through Help 4 Homeless Veterans, a charity in which the Veterans’ Foundation proudly supports.
