New England Movie Draft
22 Nov 2025
01:53:29
Happy almost Thanksgiving! To celebrate the history of our nation, we're going back to our roots as New Englanders to do a NEW ENGLAND MOVIE DRAFT! We may be biased, but some of our favorite movies take place in Massachusetts and the like, so we're bringing on two fellow New Englanders to draft some of the best movies that take place in this part of the country to get in touch with our pilgrimy roots.
We're kicking off our superhero-themed month to talk about the 2005 Disney movie, Sky High. Join us as we talk about homecoming dances, late bloomers, the popular kids, and trying to gain super powers (oh my...).
It's the 10-year anniversary of this pop culture phenomenon, and on March 23rd, 2012, the whole world was watching.
Trevor and AJ take you back to Panem (and high school) to talk about The Hunger Games, what it meant for us as teenagers, where Lionsgate dropped the ball on this franchise, and whether or not it holds up after a decade.
Our first R-rated movie here on The Old Kids Movies, we're answering the age-old question: "How come nobody's ever tried to be a superhero?"
A movie that was hugely impactful for us as teenagers, it's a violent, profanity-filled romp that's certainly not for kids. That's why we waited to cover it this month. Enjoy!
For week two of The Old Teens Movies — our special run on millennial teen flicks — we're talking about 2012's The Perks of Being a Wallflower and are joined by TJ Ruesch. A more reflective and personal episode than usual, we still have plenty of fun revisiting our awkward early days of high school and college. We hope you'll come along with us as we celebrate the beauty of this film, which celebrates it 10th anniversary this year.
Welcome to The Old Kids...I mean, Teens Movies! We're stepping it up this month for four straight weeks of our favorite movies we watched WHEN we were teens, ABOUT teens, FOR teens. To start off the month, we're talking about the movie that ushered AJ into teenagerdom – 2007's Disturbia.
This movie might just be the most accurate movie about millennial teenagers, ever. We gush about the pacing, dialogue, hangout nature, and threading in of the thriller elements.
Stay tuned for our episode next week. There are many PERKS awaiting you if you do.
Revisit the live-action adaptation of the Disney classic, One Hundred and One Dalmatians, in this week's episode! We talk about the descension from clever and witty dialogue into a CGI-filled and dialogue-light second half. The dogs were cute the whole time, though.
Get ready for a whale of a time this week. Trevor and AJ talk about 1993's Free Willy! Tune in for discussions about foster parenting, 80s vibes in a 90s movie, and the ethics of caged animals.
Anyways, we talk for some of the time out the movie about a Zebra who wants to be a race hors and the rest of the time about unrelated stuff. This was a fun episode to record. We hope you enjoy listening to it.
We're kicking off pet month with a true boy-and-his-dog movie. A relic of the 90s, Air Bud adds a dog movie to a basketball movie for one of the influential films from our childhood. Spawning more than a dozen sequels and spin-offs, Air Bud is a true millennial classic that was long overdue for a discussion on The Old Kids Movies.
It's morphin' time! For our 75th episode of The Old Kids Movies, we're joined by Power Ranger guru Derek Aiello to talk about the first Power Rangers feature film from 1995. We talk about bad dancing, worse effects, but an overall surprisingly good time.
Merry Christmas! For its 20th anniversary, we have one of our most heated discussions on record on 2004's Christmas with the Kranks. AJ and Trevor tap into why this critically maligned Christmas film has since gotten reappraisal – and whether or not that second look has been deserved.

AJ and Trevor follow Edmund, Lucy, Peter, and Susan and their first tale in Narnia! Join us as we recount this epic 2005 kids film that grossed three-quarters of a billion dollars back in the day, yet somehow seems as irrelevant as ever. Why doesn't Narnia live on? And what did we like about it this time around?
Why talk about just one Santa Clause movie when you can talk about three?
In this year's Christmas special, we're breaking down the good, the bad, and the ugly of this iconic Christmas movie trilogy. Trevor loves the first movie – AJ's a defender of #2, and has a bone to pick with the first.
Join us as we recount The Santa Clause, The Santa Clause 2, and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause right in time for Christmas 2021.
Check out our full backlog of holiday-themed episodes!
Are you traveling this Christmas? You're in luck! We've recorded a review of 2006's Unaccompanied Minors – it's one of AJ's favorites and one of Trevor's most maligned. Let's see if a Christmas miracle can bring these two together on this movie about six kids stranded in an airport on Christmas Eve.
Stay tuned for our Christmas special next week, and check out our full backlog of holiday-themed episodes!
Time to talk about our favorite (well, the only) Hanukkah movie, 8 Crazy Nights! This Adam Sandler flick is crude, quick, and was seen by FAR too many 90s kids when they were children.
Stay tuned for more Christmas movies, and check out our full backlog of holiday-themed episodes!
When you're finished with this episode, check out our discussion on the sequel, Cheaper By the Dozen 2, on Apple or Spotify.
To celebrate Thanksgiving, we're talking about the family movie from our generation – 2003's Cheaper By the Dozen. A commercial success and a hit with its intended audience, Cheaper By the Dozen was a mainstay for 90s kids and features the likes of Tom Welling, Hilary Duff, Alyson Stoner, Morgan York, and so many more. But is it worth watching today?
Please leave us a review and follow us right here on Apple and Spotify – it's the best way to help the show!
Time to play a game. Join Alan Parish, Sarah Whittle, and Peter and Judy Shepherd to play a little game that started in 1969.
This week, The Old Kids roll the dice on 1995's Jumanji. Join us as we recount board games, VHSs in furniture stores, and discuss the legacy and impact of this still-alive franchise.
Next week, Thanksgiving! And don't worry – it's not expensive. In fact, it's pretty cheap.
Just in time for its 20th anniversary, we're here to talk about 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! The movie that introduced us to the wizarding word, the first Harry Potter movie featured magic, fun, and some questionable performances from child actors. Join us as we go back to Hogwarts, talk about Harry Potter's legacy, and recount seeing this movie at the Showcase Cinema in Dedham, Massachusetts.
The mouse is in the house. To kick off a month of family-centric old kids movies, we're talking about the lengthy process of mouse adoption for 1999's Stuart Little. Trevor and AJ both kind of forgot all about this movie, until memories came flooding back about talking cats, a boat race, bowling balls, and more.
Subscribe for new episodes! Next week, we have a special episode planned for a magical movie's 20th anniversary.
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (ft. The Girls Who Cried B-Horror)
28 Oct 2021

In this episode, we chat about villain pubs, men discussing feelings, dance numbers, Ruebn Studdard, and so much more.

It's finally time. Join Trevor and AJ as they visit the town of Salem in their home state of Massachusetts, alongside Max, Dani, Allison, Binx, Sarah, Mary, and Winnifred in this millennial Halloween staple.
This week, we're joined by professional VFX artist Josephine Allegretti to discuss the lasting legacy of 2006's Monster House. In the past 15 years, it has become regarded as one of the best Halloween movies ever. So why do we keep revisiting this old kids movie every October?
Join Alvin, Simon, Theodore, and – of course – The Old Kids as we recount this tale of childhood terror! One of AJ's favorite nostalgic fall classic – and a new watch for Trevor – this squeaky movie mixes The Wolfman, The Chipmunks, and a bit of Fright Night for a musical adventure that might be best left as a memory on a square TV in your suburban living room. Listen to the full episode to see where we landed on this 2000 direct-to-video movie.
Next week – a haunted movie that takes place in a big house.
