EP 65 Manuel de la Torre 213 Jun 201800:23:40

Considering the soundtrack of my life.

An hour into a synthesizer nerd out, Manuel taps into some real deep thoughts. How has technology changed music production? How has technology changed music purchasing and enjoyment? And how has technology changed relationships? Really enjoyed where this show ended up. Think you will as well.

Leather pants, lubrication and lunacy.

I like alliteration. And all of those points are actually addressed in this conversation. Also lots of dick jokes, giggling, wheezing, gulping, and making fun of Kyle Stebbins and improv. We do bring everything around to the Ninja turtle action figures for closure.

Big drinks. Big jokes. Big mistake.

Not sure why I thought it would be a good idea to drink Long Island Iced Teas, but we were all in on this one. Learned a lot about how he got into advertising through an unconventional route. Comedy. Trevor is a guy, writing jokes for a guy, writing jokes for Carrot Top.

Also learned about his Ninja Turtles. Oh boy…

Coffee, beer, kimchi and kids.

Ryan and I extend Ken’s life.

Let’s be friends. Let’s hang out. Let’s add a little time to our lives. Ken tells us why he decided to come to the show. He also compliments me for martini size choice and Ryan for his gin choices. So complimentary. We should have him over more often.

Also continuing my unintentional trend of interviewing folks with military service.

Can advertising be automated? Are our careers in jeopardy?

Data dictates marketing, but can it be used in the creation of the ads themselves? Automation moves us all ahead, but is there a point where it’s gone too far? Will technology put us all on the unemployment line? A lot of questions that get asked, but not a lot of resolution. Fun conversation.

Shy, unsettled guy looking to make a career as copywriter.

EP45 Drunk Dialing 116 Feb 201800:19:55

We had a scheduling issue. Some miscommunication meant a no show guest. Ryan and I started drinking and didn’t realize no one was coming until we’d had several drinks. So we decided to see what other people were doing. And record it. Not a complete disaster, but this is only the first episode.

We’re sorry. But not sorry enough to not do it again.

EP44 Don Aguirre 114 Feb 201800:22:43

Stinky, rubber bat suits and cardboard cutout beatdowns.

John’s a busy guy. Working full time, freelancing and developing strategy card games. Almost too busy to get to the show. But he made it. We start with the golden age of analog games and jump to the golden age of comic books. Sounds better written here than my poor attempt at transition.

Ryan is out for this show, but I’m sure he’ll be back soon. Considering how the last couple of shows went, maybe it’s for the best he wasn’t here…

Ryan ruins the show!

We start out talking about housing and donuts, but quickly crash into strategies for using the bathroom at Swanson Russell. We do finish with cocktail talk, but even that doesn’t get out of the gutter.

We still manage to get an entertaining show and hopefully Mike will come back. We promise to treat you better next time.

Also, Peter Worth sits in for Ryan Holt and keeps the glasses full of champagne. Champagne you say? Yes. Lisa expects the best. And she’ll get it. Not just in her work, but in her free time. Always a craftsman. Sometimes a drinker.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Jason Davis is that he’s a craftsman in all his interests. You see it in his work at Screen Ink and you’ll hear about it in his discussion of home brewing. EP23 Jason Davis 121 Nov 201700:22:26

Screen printing was the trap that caught Jason.

He thought working his way through college would be easier with a job at a local screen printer. Little did he realize this would be the career path to put him in touch with a wide assortment of bike freaks, art weirdos and malcontents. Well, that’s how we met.  I had never heard the story of how Jason came to Lincoln and how he assumed ownership of Screen Ink. So this was all new. Good stuff.

Also, Ryan couldn’t make the show so I took over as bartender and Neveen stepped in to take over as show hostess. Hopefully this doesn’t end in some sort of disaster…

How do you define success? Our walk with philosophy and art.

Now that all of the introductions are out of the way, Ben, Ryan and I dive into the real interesting part of the conversation. Why do three guys who make a living in the commercial world feel so compelled to succeed in art? What is to be gained? Personal satisfaction or monetary gain? Both? Neither? No answers to the questions here, but compelling discussion.

Also I get cranky because the show runs long and my glass gets empty.

Neveen has a big dick.

Well, at least that’s what she would like everyone to think. Actually now that I think about it, seems like a pretty good analogy for how she handles business. I have always liked Neveen because she’s not only talented and funny, but she doesn’t take shit from people. She speaks her mind and doesn’t get pushed around.

Anyway, we have a good time talking about her history up until we met. And then she manages to do something no one on the show has done yet: get some info about my history. Because Neveen won’t let me weasel out of anything.

Lots of good talk about self motivation and world views. Also chat about West Coast fast food. Finally it all gets ruined in the end. Almost cut that audio, but since I’m doing this show for me I kept it. Apologies for anyone offended by the inappropriate conversation or my gratuitous dropping of the F bomb. We were late into the lunch and 3 martinis gets me in a surly mood.

EP 013 Peter Worth 317 Oct 201700:22:42

How to succeed in advertising.

Or not. After some talk of debaucherous locations with Mr. Holt and Mr. Worth, we discuss the “perfect” martini. Finally we get into some of the struggles of being an art director. Not an easy position and not for everyone. But Mr. Worth is up to the challenge.
