Many vehicles have started switching parts from steel over to aluminum.

JL aluminum front door: about 47 pounds

 

JK hood: 47 lbs

JL hood: 22 lbs

JL has aluminum doors, hood and windshield frame, and some body panels.

The hinges are cast aluminum too.

JL tailgate is made of magnesium alloy

Indications are the JL aluminum panels have more issues with corrosion than the steel JK panels did.

    • Try to understand what’s in there before you enter a deep puddle or mud pit

    • Slow and controlled is the key

    • What about these high-HP tire spinning influencers?

    • Not much to say here, except dont over-do it because you think you’re indestructible on such a “simple” trail.

      • I know a woman who somehow hydrolocked her 3.8l in a puddle on an access road at AOAA.

    • A delicate balance of traction and momentum

    • Drive smoothly, Throttle control, don’t dig a hole.

    • Don’t slam brakes, pump them

    • Turn into your slide

    • Similar to mud, momentum, and some forethought about what;s under the snow, and where gravity is going to take you.

    • This takes experience. You need to know how to read the snow as there are different types of snow. Wet snow, hard snow, soft powdery snow, slushy snow,  

    • Roll through the water slowly because there could be hidden rocks and holes in your path. 

    • Watch the vehicle in front of you as they will help you see what could be in your way. 

    • Know your Jeep's capability. Jeep has some videos of their vehicles water-fording.

    • How deep should you go... well each vehicle is different. I tend to air on the side of caution. I don't like go higher than my bumper. Water can damage the engine, transmission, electronics and differentials. 

    • Like with any type of off-roading never go alone. You might need someone to pull you out of the water. 

    • Once out of the water be careful of your brakes. Use them lightly until they dry out.  

    • Know the thickness of the ice If you have a medium sized truck you need to wait for the ice to be at least 12 to 15 inches thick before you take your vehicle out on the ice. You need to check the ice every so many feet to make sure the whole lake is frozen.

    • Drive with your windows rolled down in case you go through the ice. You will need a quick escape. I have one of those tools that can break a window, but by the time I reach for it in my glove box it could be too late.

    • Don’t fasten your seatbelt again this is for a quick escape. 

    • Stay well-spaced apart from other vehicles and fish houses when you are driving and parking on the frozen lake. You don’t want all the weight pilling up in one spot. 

    • Don’t drive fast. Fast driving sets up a pressure wave on the ice that can cause the ice to fracture. My niece shared this with me and said a good example of this is on the show Ice Road on Netflix. 

    • Mud

    • Rocks

    • Dirt Roads

    • Snow/Ice

    • Deep snow

    • “Slick rock” -  The red rock in the Moab area is easy. You just follow the tracks. It’s sticky. Good traction.

    • Water

    • Frozen Lake

  • My Check engine light is on then off then on. Same code oil pressure sensor. Changed it changed oil, goes on and off randomly. Going to change out the oil filter housing next week. I monitor the oil pressure and it’s totally fine.

  • Reviewed some lights, and then built a hoop for my front bumper to mount them on.

  • Bought an auxbeam switch panel to power them, need to get that installed. Tempted to start work on fenders while i start saving up for the lockers/gears for the 60’s.

Create a detailed meal plan before you go to streamline cooking & minimize food waste.

Prep at Home: Do as much chopping, marinating, and measuring as possible before.

Store prepped ingredients in resealable bags.

Now I’m seeing it finally getting National headlines at the Wall StreetJournal and Fox news as well as a prominent Radio personality in the DC area talked about it last week.

    • Took my first scenic-by-way on Wyoming Snowy Range Road. 2nd scenic byway in the US in 1988, Second highest pass in Wyoming. There’s a lake up there Lake Marie named after the first woman to be elected to the Wyoming Legislature in 1910. She played a huge role in the woman's right to vote. Did you know Wyoming allowed women the right to vote before the rest of the country. I also stopped by the Hobo Hot Springs in Saratoga Wy. HOT!!! This Thursday I will upload my Top 5 Tips for wheeling in the mud. Could be a topic for the show maybe get some mud wheelers to interview.

Off Road Recovery Gear Must Haves

  • Recovery Strap vs Tow Rope – 

    • You should have a good quality recovery strap. 

    • Make sure it’s a recovery strap not a tow strap. There is a difference. The recovery straps are designed for the rigors of pulling out a stuck vehicle, a tow strap is designed for flat towing.

    • Static load vs dynamic or shock load.

    • Load Rating When selecting recovery straps, it is crucial to consider the weight of your vehicle. The breaking strength of recovery straps should be at least twice the maximum weight of your vehicle to ensure safe towing.

    •  For instance, if your Jeep weighs 5,000 pounds, you should choose recovery straps that have a breaking strength of over 10,000 pounds.

  • Tree Saver

    • Load Rating  The rating of 12,000 kg on the ARB Recovery tree trunk protector indicates its capacity to withstand a load of 12,000 kilograms or approximately 26,000 pounds. This protector is designed to be used in conjunction with a winch and pulley block. When using a winch, it is important to note that the winch capacity can be doubled when a pulley block is used. For instance, a 10,000-pound winch can potentially pull up to 20,000 pounds. Hence, the 12,000 kg (26,000 lbs) tree trunk protector is a suitable choice as it allows for a safe margin by doubling the winch capacity.

  • Soft Shackles vs Shackles (D-Ring)

    • Load Rating When it comes to shackles or D-rings used for vehicle recovery, it is essential to only use load-rated ones. These shackles will have a working load limit (WLL) or safe working load (SWL) stamped onto them. It is recommended to use shackles with a rating of at least 3.25 tons (3,250 kg) as a minimum requirement for attaching one end of a strap. However, for applications such as tree trunk protectors where two ends of the strap are fitted in the shackle, it is more suitable to use shackles with a rating of 4.75 tons (4,750 kg) as they have a larger eye.

    • When securing the shackle pin, it is important not to over-tighten it. Excessive forces exerted on the shackle during vehicle recovery can cause the pin to seize. The correct method is to tighten the pin until it seats and then back it off approximately a quarter turn.

    • Check the tires, body structure, steering, suspension, and exhaust system for damage. (my tailpipe got smushed)

    • Inspect the radiator for mud and debris and clean as required.

    • Check threaded fasteners for looseness, particularly on the chassis, drive-train components, steering, and suspension. Re-tighten them if required.

    • Check for accumulations of plants or brush. These things could be a fire hazard. They might hide damage to fuel lines, brake hoses, axle pinion seals, and propeller shafts.

    • After extended operation in mud, sad water or similar dirty conditions have the radiator, fan, brake rotors, wheels, brake linings, and axle yokes inspected and cleaned as soon as possible.

    • If you experience unusual vibration after driving in the mud, slush, or similar conditions, check the wheels for impacted material. Impacted material can cause a wheel imbalance. (My last trip my wheels were full of clay/mud. When we stopped I cleaned them out them before it got too bad or the mud dried)

  • After your rig is back at home

    • Grease things like joints and bearings, especially if you were in water

    • Rinse mud off of the body and undercarriage

    • Pay close attention to places where mud and dirt can accumulate.

    • Clean your engine bay

  • Periodically

    • Check your differential for contamination, fluid level, and flecks of metal

    • Check your transmission fluid for the same

    • Inspect your air filter, blow out dust

# The Essential Do's and Don'ts for trail etiquette

 

Do: Keep track of your group when off-roading in a group. It is the responsibility of every driver to keep track of the vehicle behind them via the rear view mirror. The bond of the convoy is sacred; maintaining a visual on the Jeep trailing you ensures no one is left behind or in distress

Don’t: Tailgating is a no-go. It's not just about safety; it’s about respect. Allow the Jeep ahead of you to clear obstacles entirely before proceeding. This is off-roading, not rush hour.

Do: Uphill traffic takes precedence. Momentum is key on steep inclines; losing it could mean getting stuck or worse. Yielding to uphill Jeeps is not just courteous—it's critical. The vehicle going down should pull over as safely and quickly as possible.

Don’t: Resist the urge to speed. Trails offer a tapestry of nature and challenge to be savored, not rushed. Speeding risks both the environment and the serenity of the experience.

Do: Come prepared. A well-packed Jeep is a lifeline on the trails, equipped with recovery gear, a first-aid kit, communication tools, and essential spares. Your preparedness is your peace of mind.

Do: Embrace the spirit of assistance. Off-roading is a community, and on remote trails, a helping hand can make all the difference. Whether it's recovery assistance or guidance through a tricky section, your support strengthens the bonds of the off-roading fraternity.

Don't: Avoid "dusting" at all costs. Creating a dust storm not only impairs visibility and breathing but also diminishes the enjoyment of open-air Jeep enthusiasts. Slow down, show respect.

Don't: Wheel spinning: Ordinarily, wheel spinning is the result of one of two things: Driver error or having the wrong equipment. Either one throws rocks or mud on other vehicles or can cause ruts in the trail, making it an unpleasant experience for the next person. If you find yourself in a situation where you are spinning excessively, try another line or turn around.

Don't: Rethink rock stacking. While sometimes necessary, frequent stacking can harm the environment and alter challenges meant to be conquered by skill, not alteration.

# Obstacle Tips

Closely observe the vehicle ahead of you. This helps you pick the proper line(s) for negotiating a rough spot. The ability to see their rear differential is a good starting point.

Get better perspective when there are multiple obstacles by dropping farther back. This gives you more time to think through your strategy.

If you have made several attempts at an obstacle and there is a long ling of rigs waiting their turn, move aside and let them through. There is nothing wrong with being winched through an obstacle if you can’t make it through on your own after a reasonable number of attempts.

Leave your ego at home. Don’t let others pressure you into doing something you’re not comfortable doing. There is nothing wrong with taking a bypass if you or your vehicle is not up to tackling an obstacle.

    • What is Bantam?

    • Trip out, and day 1 (Friday)

      • Got started a little later, but its roughly a 4:30 drive, so we weren’t in too much of a rush.

      • I am always super paranoid about tops when towing, because of maneuvering the trailer. I had bought a Garmin RV 795 GPS to try to see if it helps with these things.

        • Either it did in fact account for trailer parking during the trip, or we were just very lucky. Because we had no problems.

      • Friday night at the event is the Butler invasion.

        • We were on the fence on whether we wanted to attend because it was fun last year, but the traffic getting into butler was just horrendous.

        • They supposedly improved that, but we were still worried about it

        • We ended up getting to the event grounds late enough that we didn't see a reason to head to the invasion

      • We went to the hotel

        • I met a guy from Skyjacker in the lobby

        • The hotel was giving away ducks, the kids each grabbed one.

        • The pool in the hotel was right across the hall from us, which the kids loved.

    • Day 2 (Saturday)

      • The pancake maker at the hotel was not working right, to my daughters disappointment.

      • We decided to the vendor thing in the morning

      • My wife and kids are all about the little shop-booths.

        • They picked up some rubber ducks.

        • They were super excited to leave a duck on every jeep they saw. I helped them understand that a lot of these jeeps sitting round the vendor area arent a person’s jeep, but owned by a company, and it wouldnt mean as much to leave a duck on them. So we went over to the jeep show, which are just average folks jeeps on display, and they had a blast looking at all the neat jeep builds

      • I didnt really stop and talk to vendors, except the ones who I had connections with. I saw folks like quake led, a number of tire vendors, affordable offroad, skyjacker. One made hard top hoists and storage solutions. And a flip-back freedom panel motification. They had a guy there that seemed like he just flipped open and closed the freedom panels all day long.

      • There was a JET ENGINE on display for some reason.

      • Terry from the JLPod was there, with Oracle Lights. We ended up buying some tail lights for the JKU from him.

      • We also came across a local fire company who was selling raffle tickets for a 2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, This thing was beautiful, and the proceeds of course benefit the fire co. So we bought one.

        • This jeep had a $78,000 sticker price!

      • After lunch we hit the on-site trails.

        • We hit all the trails thaty they’d let us (there are.. 6 iirc we did 5). Their green and blue trails are SUPER easy in my opinion. Comparing them to off-road park trails in the area, i’d call all of them green. The biggest challenge was tire placement for some rutted trails, a little mud, one or two slightly technical obstacles.

        • That being said, events like this sometimes have to lower the bar a little. Bantam attracts all skill level of jeep owners, some of them are pretty green when it comes to off-road. So generally the trails have to be strictly rated for vehicle capability, and cant really account for driver skills. Or thats how they feel.

        • We were cut off at blue because the LJ is on 33’s.

        • We did two trails on day 2, then came back and did the other three on day 3.

      • I think it was after the trails, we went over to the swap meet, and I picked up twp YJ grills. Why would I need two YJ grills? Well, i’ll tell you.

        • Bench project…

        • Everyones going to hate me for this, but i want to try swapping the LJ’s grill to a YJ grill. I will likely need a hood too, and ill probably ditch the factory fenders and replace them with something custom.

      • We also visited the Metalcloak CTI trailer

        • The LJ Scored a 580, which isnt amazing, but the suspension isnt all that custom, so i’ll take it.

        • Im glad I had this opportunity because I’d love to get it re-tested once Ive got those new axles under it (and new suspension).

    • Day 3 and return trip (Sunday)

      • Day 3 was basically finishing up the trails we didn’t do on day 2, and then hitting the playground. We did hit the vendors first, because my daughter saw a cute little dress at one of the vendors booths that she really wanted.

      • The playground was a ton of fun. They have 5 different lanes, for different skill sets, including a mud pit. I did everything but the mud pit.

      • The 35”+ lane…

      • The teeter-totter

    • Overall

      • The Caddy gave me a little bit of an uneasy feeling. I feel like the “Can i really tow with a 15 year old cadillac escalade” experiment is going to end soon. Its served its purpose, but the thing is nickel and diming us, and now i;m worried that its coming up on a transmission issue.

What is Overlanding?

    • The term "overlanding" was first used in Australia in the early 19th century, describing the practice of driving livestock (typically sheep and cattle) across vast distances to markets or new grazing lands.

    • Overlanding was essential to Australia's agricultural expansion, especially as settlers moved into the interior of the continent. The need to transport livestock from remote stations (ranches) to urban markets or ports created the profession of the "overlander."

Managing your own projects

  • What do I mean?

  • Managing a vehicle project is a lot like managing any other project.

    • You need to set goals

    • Think about what you’ll need

    • Think about if you have the skills to do it yourself

      • Be honest

  • Get opinions from others

    • Are you the first person to ever do this thing?

    • If you are. Ask yourself why.

    • If you are not, ask people who have done it how they did it and if they ran into any issues.

    • If a lot of people tell you not to. Try to really critically think about why they’re saying that.

  • Try not to get overwhelmed

    • I’ve been there. In fact I get there in almost every project that’s more than an evenings worth of work. It feels like you’ll never finish.

    • Keep track of what you’re doing. Make a list

    • Cross things off as they’re complete. It’ll not only keep track of things. It’ll give you a satisfying progress indicator.

    • I use zip lock bags to keep nuts, bolts, washers, whatever I’ve removed.

    • Don’t be afraid to take a break. Unless you’re under a really tight deadline.

    • Don’t cut corners to save time

  • Show off what you’re doing!

    • This isn’t for everyone. But having strangers on the internet can sometimes help you avoid issues

    • People online are happy to point out your mistakes. It’s frustrating. But sometimes they’re right! If they spot something wrong you might be able to fix it before it’s too late.

    • If you feel like you can’t share it ask yourself why.
