Sensory Bins -Sand/Beans/Flour/Corn Starch/Cotton Balls/Snow -Hide toys in it -Magnet
Amma’s Favourite Play-dough Recipe
•2 Cups all-purpose flour
•3/4 Cups salt
•4 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
•2 Cups water
•2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
•Food colouring
•Quart-sized bags
In a large pot, stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar.
Add oil to water in a measuring cup. Make a well in the middle of the dry ingredients and add the oil and water mixture to it, stirring it in.
Cook over medium heat -
** stirring constantly!**
Continue stirring with your wooden spoon until the dough thickens and begins to form into a ball.
Remove from the heat and spoon it out onto parchment paper on the countertop.
Allow it to cool slightly and then knead it until it’s smooth.
Divide the dough into as many balls as you’d like in different colours.
Add just a few (5-7) drops of food colouring to start and knead it into the still-warm dough. Add more drops to deepen the colour as desired, but knead between each addition as the colour will deepen as it merges into the dough with kneading.
Alternatively, if you are concerned about staining, you can put the dough balls into separate quart-sized freezer bags to add the colouring to each one in the bags. Then knead the dough IN the bag until the colour is fully merged.
There are also amazing colours you can make using natural ingredients like coffee, purple cabbage, matcha green tea powder and turmeric! But I recommend looking up recipes for these as there are some cautionary (potential mess!) details! But they’re fun and super cool, too, so I strongly recommend them. Just do a lit

Is your toddler starting to bite, kick, yell, or smack you? Mine is!

Amma will educate us on why these behaviors are coming out and how we can respond to them instead of reacting to them!

102. HALLOWEEN SPECIAL; THE SCARY TRUTH ABOUT SWEETS!
31 Oct 2023
00:42:37
We do not want to scare our kids, we want them to make smart decisions. We do want to scare us, parents, a little so we can understand the harm in feeding our kids this "poison"!
This begins with us being transparent, modeling, and also understanding that giving our kids "freedom" to decide and allow natural consequences like a tummy ache might not be most helpful with our toddlers as these foods have been made to be addictive.
Learn how we can help guide our littles through this Halloween. Last year's episode will be useful to you as well.
101. SPANKING; DOES IT WORK OR IS IT A QUICK FIX THAT HAS HIDDEN PROBLEMS?
24 Oct 2023
00:29:54
So, to spank or not to spank?
This might seem like a redundant question to some. If you want to deter a behavior and they are not listening, you can make them listen... right?
Many of us were brought up on spankings. But let's call it what it is, hitting. Does hitting our kids really work? That's what we are discussing in this week's topic.
Sure it might seem like a quick fix but what are the consequences? If we are setting the example, the example we are setting is that hitting is ok. And it's not, so what can we do... tune in to learn more.

99. TANTRUMS: WHAT ARE THEY, WHY DO THEY HAPPEN, & HOW TO RESPOND NOT REACT
10 Oct 2023
00:33:46
In this week’s conversation, we are talking tantrums. What are they, why do they happen, and how can we minimize them?
One thing we want you to take away is that a tantrum is a communication and not a behavioral problem! This might be hard to digest as we might think a tantrum or meltdown is because they just aren’t getting what they want, when in fact this is just their response to stressors.
Do you ever joke with your kids and say “awwww, your life is soooo hard.” Although it seems that they have it so easy… our littles have stressors as well. We think they have it made but it’s not as easy as we think. These little ones are learning and absorbing so much. It can be/feel overwhelming to them and when our needs/wants differ from theirs, this can cause stress leading to “tantrums.”
We will discuss what that looks like in their bodies and how we as parents can support our kids during these times!
Next week is our 100th episode, we hope to see you at our meet & greet! Email us at thenurturingparent.pod@gmail.com for the zoom link ❤️
98. DON’T SAY DON’T; LEARNING THE LANGUAGE OUR LITTLES UNDERSTAND
03 Oct 2023
00:28:34
Have you heard of not using the word no with your littles? Did that sound crazy to you? Because it did to me…… until this episode!
I learned the brain work behind it and how it actually helps gain our littles cooperation. I used to think we would be raising brats by not saying no do them or using these “negative” words. But it is not only with our littles that we can improve cooperation and listening, even in our other relationships this will help.
I know it may seem difficult but the first step is NOTICING. So we want you to atleast start noticing and paying attention to the times you do say “no” or “don’t do this.”
Then to learn how to change it we give you the tool of giving information so you know what to say next.
Instead of “DON’T LEAVE YOUR SHOES HERE, PICK THEM UPAND PUT THEM AWAY!”
You can try “I see some shoes in the entrance.” This will work when your child knows what is expected so those boundaries should be set first so when you say this they can, with more willingness, go put their shoes away.
It is pretty magical and will help connect you as well when you can learn how to speak to each other in this way.
97. ACTS OF AGGRESSION- WHY THEY HAPPEN & HOW TO DEAL!
26 Sep 2023
00:40:39
Is your little hitting? Mine does and it makes me want to yell “how dare you hit your mother” or “who do you think you are, want me to show you how it feels!” Then I have to remember that this is what I was told growing up and those reactions DO NOT HELP!
What does help is reminding myself that “my child is acting her age.” What does that mean…. Well, our little ones still lack the ability to control their impulses and also lack the ability to verbally communicate what they need or feel. This is usually what leads to aggressive behaviors.
96. "YOU HAVE TO SHARE!" OR DO THEY? IS IT APPROPRIATE TO INSIST ON OUR YOUNG CHILDREN SHARING?
19 Sep 2023
00:39:47
I'll let you in on a secret.... the reason they aren't sharing is because they don't know how! You can expect your child to understand the concept of sharing around ages 4-5. If you are worried that your kid doesn't know how to share, tune into this week's episode to learn how we can encourage them and work through this uncomfortable phase, I say uncomfortable because I notice how quick we are as parents to jump in and "fix it." It might be relieving to know that we can take a step back and allow our littles to learn from experience.
P.S. We need your help to celebrate our 100th episode! Please send us a voice memo with your name, how old your little is, and we'd love to know what tools you have learned and how they've helped in your parenting journey!
Please attach your voice note to an e-mail and send it to us at thenurturingparent.pod@gmail.com 🤎
95. IS SEPARATION ANXIETY MAKING YOUR MORNINGS CHAOTIC & UPSETTING GETTING READY FOR SCHOOL OR DAYCARE?
12 Sep 2023
00:38:12
In this week's episode, we dive into why your child really doesn't want to go to school/daycare. The truth is, it's separation anxiety!
Yes, they want to be with us it's natural. It is normal and so we should not be fighting our kids to "just deal with it" but instead be there to understand that it is a transition phase and all we can do is support them and their feelings.
Amma will share things we can do to ease the transition and build connections during this time. We want to remind you that this transition is really about connection and familiarity. This might mean other things are put to the side while you make your priority connecting with your little one!

93. GOING THROUGH THE TANTRUM PHASE? WHAT TO DO AND WHY IT'S HAPPENING - LISTENER Q&A #4
29 Aug 2023
00:35:08
Hi, I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 4 month old baby. Both are girls. My oldest daughter is going through the tantrum phase and at times it’s literally for anything - she wants to pour her own water even though the cup is filled to the rim, her father went to walk the dog, she wants to eat on my lap, she wants something else to eat, doesn’t want the car seat belt, etc - and they just spiral.
I try to connect with her, we do breathing exercises and I reinforce feelings and “using our words.”
I won’t lie, when the tantrums continue to spiral - meaning it’s 30 mins of tantruming - I have to walk away at times. I feel like my chest is tightening and I’m overwhelmed.
Also, my 4 month old has been very jumpy especially every time her big sister has a tantrum. The baby will start crying, wake up crying, or be easily startled. At times I feel like she’s scared by her older sister. Is my younger child becoming overwhelmed or traumatised by all the yelling? I don’t know what to do. I don’t want them to resent each other or have a bad relationship.
Do you know what the #1 predictor of young success is? It is helping with chores by the age of 2-3.
In this week's episode, we talk about all the benefits of getting our littles more involved with chores and how we can do it successfully!
Some benefits of chores that we discuss are : -more bonding time -teaches family values -life skills -inspires a desire to offer contribution -builds competency -builds confidence/self-reliance
Some chores our little can help with are: - setting the table -make their bed -pick out their clothes -chop some soft foods -sorting laundry -sweeping
91. BENEFITS OF ALLOWING YOUR KIDS TO BE MESSY & GET DIRTY A.K.A. LETTING THEM BE KIDS!
15 Aug 2023
00:31:40
Do you ever catch yourself cringing when you see your little one making a mess or getting dirty?
I do... Messy and sensory play is so beneficial for our littles but if I'm honest setting up sensory play seems overwhelming and I hate cleaning up!
But after this week's conversation with Amma, I was actually very excited to set up messy play opportunities and let my kids go out and get dirty.
Some simple and easy messy play ideas are
-water play
-sensory bins (with dirt)
-painting
Ways I implemented our conversation into my weekend
Saturday I let them dig in the dirt! I just gave them 2 little shovels and a space where they can dig to look for worms as I did some work in the backyard picking weeds. I invited them to help but they weren't interested... then we all showered after because they REALLY got dirty!
And Sunday while I folded laundry I set up a sensory bin with rice and hid little figurines inside. Both my girls age 3 &1 had so much fun discovering what was inside and then transferring the rice from container to container.
I had to take a deep breath when by the end of it, it was literally EVERYWHERE. But we cleaned it up together and everything was fine!
We had lots of fun, they were busy for about an hour with both activities, and I was able to get some things done!
Below are some photos of how it turned out. Ellie's face with actual dirt is just priceless and this rice which spread very far was cleaned up within 7-8 minutes as a team!
90. "MOM, I'M BORED!" GIVING OVERSTIMULATED KIDS THE GIFT OF BOREDOM
08 Aug 2023
00:31:25
Does letting your kids get bored bring up some anxieties for you? Maybe you suffer from mom guilt because you wish you could give them your attention 24/7. We are here to relieve you from this and let you know how amazing boredom can be for our kids!
We are living in an on-demand society where we have little to no patience and are constantly looking for a hit of dopamine.
Who wants to leave space for boredom when we have TikTok, Instagram reels, youtube shorts, kid's youtube, ipads, iPhones. Well, hopefully after tuning in to today's episode you will find the advantages of boredom are crucial to our kid's brain health and development.
Some of my favorite benefits of "boredom" are:
Chance to daydream a.k.a. wool-gathering (love that word)
time for reflection and instilling altruism
builds tolerance for discomfort (learning to step out of their comfort zone increases their growth and success)
fosters independent play and thinking
Boredom is crucial for brain health and development so we hope this serves as a reminder to take a deep breathe, leave time for nothing, and try doing less as a family.
I cannot imagine being bored... I wish I could feel boredom. Let our kids enjoy that gift while they can! 😩

Before creativity, there has to be curiosity. Open-ended play fosters curiosity in kids.
For it to be open-ended play these must apply - no specific goal in mind -allow your kids to lead the way
Some ways we can do this as mentioned in the episode are just to fill some bins with paper, glue, and scissors.
Tip: to help them get into it first show that you are into it and that it is important remembering to let them take the lead and if they ask you what you are doing just talk about the experience of it.
Open-ended play are ing words i.e. building, digging, drawing, painting, sorting, investigating, gluing, pasting.
Some fun episodes we have coming out in the next two weeks are about being bored and the BENEFITS as well as the benefits of getting down and dirty!

These changes can cause big upsets in our littles world and will come out in bursts of unwanted behaviors. How do we best combat this?
Well, if we look at the whole picture amma will give us some preventative measures to assist with the de-escalation of some behaviors.
1. Regression is normal 2. Stick to your normal routines-provides safety & security 3. Read books about similar big changes in their world and sing them songs 4. Speak to them about the changes and acknowledge their feelings 5. Move their bodies- dance parties, get outside

Welcome to the Nurturing Parent, in today's episode, we examine the negative effects of overparenting or rushing in to fix everything on our kids. One of the most important things to look at is how we can be robbing them of opportunities to learn and grow.
Overparenting, also known as helicopter parenting, refers to excessive involvement and control by parents in every aspect of their child's life. You might not think this is you but let's be open to accepting that there are some things we can change to enhance these opportunities for our kids.
Amma Lisa gives us 5 ways we can start encouraging our kid's independence today!
Reminder "Anything that a child is able to do for themselves or is learning to do for themselves needs to be ENCOURAGED & SUPPORTED"
86. CHILDREN'S WATER SAFETY | BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY

00:27:49
Did you know that 3 children a day die in the U.S. from drowning?
In this week's episode, we wanted to spread some information about water safety in hopes to help parents be more aware of how easily accidents can happen around water.
We want to remind you
Bring everything to the bathroom when its bath time
If you have to leave the room, take your baby
Always be in arm's reach around water; even when using "safety jackets"
Do NOT depend on floaties/water wings
Make sure another adult is watching if you need to step away for a minute and use a signal so you know that they know they are in charge
At the beach or pool, use headcounts to keep track of multiple kids and continuously check
Always better to be SAFE than SORRY
The highest cause of death in children is accidents around the house. Drowning included. It can take as little as 2 inches of water to drown a baby.
