I Feel You | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life20 Jun 202300:18:18

Welcome to episode 57. Today we take a deep-dive into our feelings. How we can understand them better and use them as a guide to nourish ourselves of a need that we may not have identified? In this episode I share the importance of allowing ourselves to feel without judgement, and some of the tools that might help you to name your emotions and process them in a way that is productive for your self-growth and healthier for those around you.

In this episode:

·       Why we should be cautious about performative emotions, especially with social media.

·       How anger is seen as the big bad wolf of emotions - can we learn to use it to our advantage?

·       My own personal story of a big life event and the tools I utilised to help me process the many feelings that came with it.

I Hear You | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life06 Jun 202300:14:30

Welcome to episode 56. Our relationship with ourselves will deepen when we are ready to listen to our innermost thoughts and interpret them as the messengers for what we need to feel safe and content, rather than defining us as people at their face value. 'I hear you' - easier said than done? It takes trust and time to open up and truly listen to ourselves, but it’s a journey worth taking. Listen in as I talk more about the clarity and peace that will come as a result – the ultimate prize of loving, seeing and hearing ourselves.

In this episode:

  • Feeling the fear – why you might find it uncomfortable to explore your thoughts on a deeper level, especially if it’s for the first time.
  • Understanding how challenging thoughts about ourselves are just messages for our needs, values and boundaries.
  • The conscious and unconscious mind – how and why your primeval brain is trying to keep you safe.

I See You | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life23 May 202300:17:25

Welcome to episode 55. What happens when we shift the focus away from the usual negative body image rhetoric, to a more positive place that acknowledges and celebrates the amazing, unique things we can do? Today I’m calling out the bullsh*t around the standards we uphold in ourselves to look or perform a certain way; the misconception that changing ourselves physically will make us happier, and the transformation in our self-esteem that comes from believing that our uniqueness is actually the very thing that makes us attractive to others.

In this episode:

  • Why changing our appearance doesn’t improve our happiness, but increasing our happiness 100% improves our appearance.
  • Identifying and questioning your ‘perfect aesthetic’ – is it a healthy standard to strive for?
  • Acceptance of the body you have and celebrating its capabilities is the key to contentment and a happier life.

Our Self-Talk | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life25 Apr 202300:16:53

Welcome to episode 53. Our self-talk is the backbone to our relationship with ourselves and the effect it can have on our lives is huge. What is your inner voice saying right now? Is it critical or judgemental, or kind and compassionate? The latter can take practice over time, especially if you’ve been subjected to criticism or judgement in your earlier life, but it’s well worth the work. Join me as I explore the positive changes that come when we decide to talk to ourselves with excessive kindness.

In this episode:

  • Where did your negative self-talk come from? Is it time to examine the rules that define your inner voice?

  • How self-talk can be used as a safety net to avoid criticism and the discomfort of upholding your boundaries.

  • Examples of negative self-talk to look out for in ourselves and the alternatives that can transform the way we think about ourselves.

  • When to ignore the self-doubt. The truth about perception and it’s links to your inner voice.

Welcome to episode 52. What does the phrase "upholding your boundaries" bring up for you? In this episode, I talk about how our boundaries are intrinsically linked to our foundational values, wishes and needs yet we can still struggle to uphold them, often opting for people pleasing over the feeling of discomfort. How does this work for you? Join me as I explore the truths about boundaries and how you can banish the bullsh*t to live a happier, more balanced life.

In this episode:

  • Challenging the idea that our boundaries need to be defined or justified to others to be valid.
  • Upholding our boundaries is an act of self-love – are you showing up for yourself?
  • Exploring the discomfort that often comes with upholding our boundaries.

Being Your Own Boss | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life28 Feb 202300:16:01

Welcome to episode 49. If you’re self-employed you’ll be only too aware of the responsibility that comes with being your own boss, but do you feel comfortable with the level of authority you hold over yourself as a business owner? Do you feel the need to follow a set of prescribed rules in order to be ‘good’ or have you thrown the rule book out of the window? In today’s episode I explore these two common approaches to our own authority, their roots in our own belief systems and what to do if you want to be a better boss to yourself.

In this episode:

  • Why having authority over our business lives can be liberating, but also overwhelming and sometimes confusing.
  •      Asking the big questions - Why understanding what you want from your life is always the best starting point when you are your own boss.
  •     Why using your authority to create a life that reflects your values and fulfils your ambition should always be the goal.

Being Your Own Lover | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life14 Feb 202300:15:52

Welcome to episode 48. This week I’m talking about sex, intimacy and the awakening that can come from being your own lover. What stories have you told yourself since you became an adult? What messages were you given growing up? Shame, embarrassment and a sense of being un-entitled to our own sensual pleasure has plagued many of us from an early age, shutting the door on our relationship with ourselves as sexual beings, sometimes before it even started. In this episode I talk openly about how prioritising ourselves and understanding more about our own desires can open up opportunities to invite others on our sexual journey, enabling ourselves to share the intimacy that can contribute to a happier and more fulfilled life.

In this episode:

  • Why losing your virginity is not actually the ‘big thing’ in your sexual journey.
  • Getting turned on – connecting with your kink and learning to communicate it with others.
  • A fulfilling sex life always starts with ourselves. Have you forgotten how to be your own lover?

In this episode I mention adult sex educator and coach, Ruth Ramsay. For more info visit her website https://www.ruthramsay.com/

Do I Need an App? | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life16 Jul 202400:16:50

Welcome to episode 83. Do I need an app? We’re served a constant stream of ads for tools and apps, all promising to streamline, automate and organise our busy lives. It’s very seductive. But the truth for a lot of us is that a new app isn’t the answer to an easier life. In fact, pinning your hopes on an organisational tool may end up making you feel more stressed! In this episode I explain why it’s the overwhelm that needs addressing first, and once you’ve done that, how to find the right tool that works for you as an individual. Let’s dive in!

In this episode:

·         Productivity apps aren’t for everyone, and that’s ok – it doesn’t mean you’re any less organised!

·         Why reducing your feelings of overwhelm should be the priority before you consider any app.

·         Trial and error – find an app that mirrors your brain, and remember – stopping and switching to a different one doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

Welcome to episode 47. Our relationship with ourselves can be looked at from many angles. In this episode I’m exploring the benefits that can come from consciously deciding to parent ourselves in a way that nurtures our wellbeing and supports us wholly as the people we are. Let’s take a closer look at our experiences as a child, good or bad, and how we can adapt or adopt these to have the best possible relationship with ourselves – for our own benefit and for that of our children.

In this episode:

  • Why our relationship with our parents can often be triggering, and how to heal from your childhood experience.
  • A closer look at positive examples of good parenting and how we can apply this to ourselves.
  • Breaking the cycle. How having an awareness of our own parents’ flaws can allow us to make conscious decisions about how we treat ourselves and our own children.

Pleased to meet you | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life03 Jan 202300:15:47

Welcome to episode 45 of The No Bullshit Guide to a Happier Life podcast! Season three is promising to be a journey of self-discovery, so hold on tight and let’s get stuck in!

Taking time to stop and hold our own gaze long enough for our true feelings to rise up is no easy task, and something I bet many of us (myself included) would avoid whenever possible. But in today’s episode I’m challenging you to do just that. To look at yourself in the mirror, uninterrupted and ask ‘who am I?’. This series is all about exploring the relationship we have with ourselves and how accepting our emotions for what they are rather than letting them define us can give us power to live our lives without guilt, shame or judgement. So, are you pleased to meet you?

In this episode:

  • Why we find it so uncomfortable to look ourselves in the eye.

Hygge | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life22 Nov 202200:15:56

Welcome to episode 43. Today I am talking about the wonderful Scandinavian concept of Hygge. For the winter months (with the welcome addition of cosy blankets, socks and candles) we often embrace Hygge a physical feeling of warmth and comfort, but it goes a bit deeper than that. In this episode I explore the positive benefits of creating this cosy environment for ourselves and our loved ones, and the mindset blocks that can hold us back from making the most of Hygge as a tool for when we really need it – no matter what time of year it is!

In this episode:

  • The concept of Hygge as a ‘cosiness of the soul’.
  • Why feeling safe and held is so important to our mental health.
  • How Hygge can be achieved all year round – it’s not just for Christmas!
  • Hygge for people who live alone.

Social Connection | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life25 Oct 202200:14:51

Welcome to episode 41. Today I am talking all about social connection and why it takes up such an important space in our happier life toolkit. Do we take it for granted? If you were to suddenly loose your ability to connect with your friends or community, how would you feel? Having and maintaining regular contact with the right people floods our brains with oxytocin (aka the love hormone). It helps us to process the stress of our busy, often overwhelming lives by making us feel safe, capable and supported. Are you using this as a tool in your happier life toolkit?

In this episode:

  • How positive social interactions help us to process stress.
  • Why spending time with the right people is so important.
  • Social connection is a necessity, not a luxury - do you agree?
  • The importance of community and sharing our struggles.

Going Deeper | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life27 Sep 202200:17:43

Welcome to episode 39. Are you ready to go a bit deeper? This week I’m exploring three specific activities that can help you to dive deep below the surface of your busy mind, to help quieten the racing thoughts and find a deeper level of relaxation and release. These activities are Yoga Nidra, Floating and hypnosis. In this episode I explore my experience with each, explaining the many wonderful benefits, any potential bullshit elements and of course the mindset blocks that can hold us back from adding them to our toolkit.

In this episode:

  • My account of the activities and what you can expect from each of them.
  • Why the fear of what we’ll find often stops us from delving below the surface.
  • How the act of going below the conscious mind can often reveal areas that ‘need work’, and the steps you can take if this is you.

Pleasure | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life13 Sep 202200:16:34

Welcome to episode 38. Today I’m talking about how pleasure, both sexual and non-sexual, fits into your toolkit for a happier life - and there’s a lot to dismantle, especially when it comes to sex. Ideas around pleasure being something we should all be entitled to is something I strongly uphold, but indulging ourselves to numb pain and ignore the bigger issues can throw up some red flags. Join me as I talk about the triggers, the needs and the outcomes of embracing pleasure as part of your toolkit for a happier life.

In this episode:

  • How our views on pleasure and indulgence are often shaped during our childhood – often with negative results, especially when it comes to sex.
  • Knowing the difference between using pleasure as a tool to address a genuine need, versus indulgent pleasure to block out feelings or numb ourselves of a deeper pain.
  • How society has built polarised stigma about how women should or shouldn’t experience sexual pleasure, and why it’s time to re-write your narrative so you can take pleasure in your body without the guilt.

Cooking | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life16 Aug 202200:16:45

Welcome to episode 36. What feelings arise for you around the subject of cooking? I’ve found it to be one of those very polarising topics, and I am at the uncomfortable end of the spectrum for sure! The value judgements we put upon ourselves around food and feeding our loved ones can be so ingrained that we miss out on the rich opportunities cooking can bring for creativity and self-care. In this episode I talk about my experience trying out two new recipes from scratch, exploring my mindset blocks attached to the process and the ways I alleviate the stress so I can enjoy cooking as part of my happier life toolkit.

In this episode:

  • The pre-conceived ideas around cooking (often from our own childhood) that can hold us back from enjoying it in adult life.
  • Why cooking is a great way to connect with people and how we can make it a less stressful experience.
  • The realisation that cooking can be something we do on occasion, relieving the pressure to perform in the kitchen on a daily basis.
  • How giving ourselves permission to let go of the guilt surrounding food can lead to a more enjoyable time in the kitchen.

Recipes I mention in this episode:

Creativity | The No Bullsh*t Guide to a Happier Life19 Jul 202200:16:26

Welcome to episode 34. In today’s episode I’m exploring the ideas and beliefs around creativity. What does creativity mean to you? For many people, taking part in a creative activity gives us an opportunity to let go of negative emotions and release tension that can build up in our minds and bodies. By throwing out the idea you need to be good at something to be creative can free us up to explore new and fulfilling ways of expressing ourselves. Listen in to find out more!

In this episode:

  • How challenging our beliefs around creativity can open us up to new and exciting opportunities.
  • Creativity as tool to release stress - how focusing on the process rather than the outcome can help us to live more in the moment and re-balance our emotional selves.
  • How smashing the expectation that you need to produce an end product leads to more fulfilling creative experiences.
