| 168 - Photographing What's Real: Film, Trust, and Truth | 16 Apr 2026 | 01:01:18 | |
In an industry often driven by trends, shot lists, and repeatable formulas, wedding photographer John Dolan has built a career by doing the opposite: showing up with an open mind, a few film cameras, and a deep respect for what actually unfolds on a wedding day. In this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, John and I dig into what it really means to be "true" to a couple's experience. Rather than manufacturing moments or chasing perfection, John approaches weddings as a blank slate, allowing the day to reveal itself organically. That philosophy carries through every aspect of his work, from how he interacts with couples to his continued commitment to shooting film in an overwhelmingly digital world. If you're a wedding photographer feeling burned out by formulas, overwhelmed by the pressure to perform for social media, or simply curious about a more honest, grounded approach to storytelling, this episode offers a refreshing reminder: you don't need to invent meaning - sometimes your job is just to notice it. THE WORM IS THE SPICE. THE SPICE IS THE WORM! Why am I the nerd that I am? What does it take for a nerdy topic to make me emphatic in my feelings about it? Why does Coke taste so much better than Pepsi? On this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, friend of the show Leighton DaCosta returns to talk about his recent trip to WPPI, hats, why he didn't like The Batman, and coming full circle as a photographer.
This is Leighton's fifth time on the podcast. You may remember our discussions about hiring other photographers to work for you, racism in the photo industry, or arguing about the best fictional photographers.
Much like our previous discussions, we cover a lot of ground, including why he didn't like The Batman, how much we're both looking forward to Top Gun: Maverick, and setting goals. However, we spend most of our time focusing on coming full circle as a photographer. What does that mean? You will have to listen and find out! Episode Promos

On this very funny episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, Steven Van Elk from the Wedding Photo Hangover Podcast drops by to discuss photo industry 'code words'. Code words? What code words? The photo industry has code words? You know, the things that photographers and people in the industry like to say when they really mean something else. For example, when photographers use the term "unphotogenic" to describe subjects they personally don't think are attractive. Or terms like "challenging" or *shudder* "vibes"... Tune in as Steven and I try to decode the photo industry vernacular... About My Guest
"I moved to Chicago when I was 18 years old and started exploring my opportunities in the creative field. I didn't know anyone so I knew it was the perfect opportunity to reinvent myself! As I continued my career in photography in a foreign country, many different opportunities started arising! One of the most important ones in my career, so far, was the Front Porch Project during the pandemic lockdown in 2020. I took this opportunity and created a project that, to this day, continues to create opportunities! I am happily married to my husband Travis and we are expecting our first child together. I will experience motherhood behind the lens and get creative to document each and every milestone in my child's growth. I am an advocate of documenting milestones and printing them out; there is nothing like a printed picture. I continue to explore life creatively and offer my talent to non-profits as well as in a professional level."
