116 - Getting Noticed: How Presentation Can Impress Creative Directors and Photo Editors08 Aug 202401:05:18

I am excited to bring you, my Nerdy Photo Crew, a valuable and insightful episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast that dives into the often-mysterious world of photo editors and creative directors. In this episode, we discuss how photographers can better understand these key players and present their work to these decision makers more effectively.

Demystifying the Roles: Photo Editors and Creative Directors

First things first: what exactly do photo editors and creative directors do? Our guest, Karen Williams, breaks down the roles and responsibilities, revealing the crucial part they play in the visual storytelling process. Photo editors are the gatekeepers of visual content, curating and selecting images that align with a publication or project's vision. Creative directors, on the other hand, oversee the broader creative process, ensuring that all visual elements adhere to the brand's aesthetic and strategic goals.

Understanding what photo editors and creative directors look for can significantly increase your chances of getting your work noticed and published. That means an increased chance of getting paid!! It's not just about having great photos; it's about presenting them in a way that fits the editor's or director's needs and vision.

Tune In Now!

We invite you to tune in to this enlightening episode of our podcast. Whether you're an aspiring photographer or a seasoned pro looking to refine your approach, this episode offers valuable insights into the minds of photo editors and creative directors.

Photographers have a complex relationship with social media, and in this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast we uncover the not-so-hidden dangers that lurk beneath the glossy facade of likes and follows. Join us as we explore the challenges faced by photographers in the digital age and discuss strategies for maintaining authenticity and integrity in an increasingly competitive online landscape.

Along with my guest, Myron Fields, we share a candid discussion on the pressure of curating a picture-perfect online presence. From the relentless pursuit of outside validation to constantly comparising ourselves with peers, we shed light on the mental and emotional toll that social media can take on photographers. We examine the impact of algorithm changes on photographers having their work be seen and the effect of commodification of creativity on the photography community. Furthermore, photographers can benefit from listening and finding out how to focus their energy on social media when it comes to promoting their business, instead of just seeking approval for their posts.

As we delve deeper into social media's influence on the photo industry, we offer practical advice for aspiring and established photographers alike. From setting boundaries and managing expectations to prioritizing authenticity over popularity, this episode provides valuable insights for navigating the digital wilderness with grace and resilience. 106 - Breaking Barriers: Building a Diverse Future for Photography29 Feb 202400:52:51

In the world of photography, every click of the shutter captures not just an image but a unique perspective, a story waiting to be told. Yet, the industry has often fallen short in amplifying voices from marginalized communities. Today, it's crucial to explore how we can empower photographers from diverse backgrounds, ensuring a rich tapestry of narratives that reflect the true diversity of the human experience.

Visibility matters. Empowering photographers from marginalized communities involves actively promoting their work and ensuring that they receive the recognition they deserve. This can be achieved through exhibitions, features in publications, and inclusion in industry events. When diverse voices are in the spotlight, it paves the way for future generations to see themselves reflected in the field.

In this episode of the podcast, I speak with photographer Walid Azami about this is not just a call for diversity; but as a commitment to justice, representation, and the celebration of the many stories that make up our world. By advocating for change, we can create an inclusive photo industry that truly captures the beauty and complexity of the human experience. The camera becomes a powerful tool not just for capturing moments but for rewriting the narrative of who gets to hold it and tell the stories that matter.

Our lives today are dominated by digital screens and devices. Printing photos has taken a backseat to 'sharing' online. We are capturing more photos than ever before, however we are printing less and less.

Yet, there's a timeless magic in holding a tangible photograph – a sentiment that transcends the pixels on our screens. While so many memories are often lost in the digital abyss, the importance of printing photos becomes a testament to preserving the essence of our lives.

104 - Capturing the Sound: Music Photography, Mick Fleetwood, and the Maui Wildfires02 Feb 202400:57:59

When photographer Sarah Sharaf-Eldien contacted me about discussing her new book, Mālama Maui, which showcases the island and the musicians who play there, I knew I had to have her on. Especially since 100% of the profits from the book will be donated to the Maui United Way Fire Disaster Relief Fund.

After a chance meeting, Sarah landed a music photography job most photographers would consider a dream, working alongside Mick Fleetwood, legendary drummer of the band Fleetwood Mac. This led to Sarah working closely with not only local music artists but internationally acclaimed music superstars as well.

It only seemed natural to her to use the photos from that time in her life to help with the relief effort in some way.

"The word 'Mālama' in the Hawaiian language means 'to serve, honor, protect, and care for.' The wildfires' heartbreaking devastation left hundreds of families displaced, countless businesses destroyed, and a tragic toll of lives lost. It is my hope that the photographs I've presented in Mālama Maui will preserve treasured memories, celebrate moments of magic, and cherish a sense of community that perseveres even in the face of adversity," says Sharaf-Eldien.

"To the Ohana of Maui who have lost this historical part of their homeland, I wish Ka Lā Hiki Ola – the dawning of a new day. I sincerely hope that the funds raised from the sales of my book will contribute to the families and individuals who need our support, and will assist in the preservation and rebuilding efforts of Maui and Lahaina."

102 - Black Astronaut: A Photographic Journey Into the Unknown16 Nov 202301:10:42

The period of time from the beginning of the pandemic until now seems to have been ten years and at the same time only a few months. It's like we're experiencing some sort of collective time warp.

When I stop and think about ALL of the things that have taken place in that period of time, I start to feel overwhelmed.

In this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, photographer Kamal X and I tackle some of that time periods and topics entwined with the time. Kamal's new photo book, Black Astronaut, "gives viewers a striking depiction of a nationwide revolution ignited by the pandemic and the passing of George Floyd. By taking an innovative approach my book creates an unparalleled opportunity to explore pivotal sectors of our country's unrest."

In our discussion, we also touch on subjects ranging from overcoming uncertainty and hostile situations to what it truly means to be yourself. Now that it seems so distant in many ways, we forget how lost and in uncharted territory we really were.

101 - Language for Visual People: Keys to Marketing for Photographers09 Nov 202301:29:36

While a picture is worth a thousand words, those words can be the key to unlocking the full potential of your brand. The photographers we spoke to emphasized the significance of selecting a name, tagline, and message that not only describe what you do but also convey the "why" behind your photography. Your chosen words are the foundation upon which your visual identity rests. They define your style, evoke emotions, and solve your clients' needs. In short, they tell your story.

In this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, we're delving into the fascinating world of branding and marketing for photographers and exploring a critical aspect that often takes a backseat to visuals—the power of language.

100 - Tiny Bang Hypothesis05 Oct 202300:07:05

The grand adventure saga comes to a close. It's possible that I spent way too much time and energy fretting over what to do with the 100th episode instead of just celebrating reaching this important milestone.

I wanted to create a huge, epic adventure episode and it took up so much space up in my mind that I delayed putting out the episode over and over because I wanted it to be perfect.

This is what they call a 'teachable moment' - don't let perfect be the enemy of good. I hope you enjoy this adventure episode. I'm not sure when they will be back again. That's not to say the Nerdy Photo Crew is going away but the full fledge adventures I've been doing regularly for the last 75 episodes are probably going to become less frequent bonus episodes in the future.

In the meantime, I have a bunch of interviews with photographers and other folks who can help you with your creative business that I need to put out there. That's what really matters, right?

Thank you for being there for the first one hundred episodes - and here's to the next hundred!

Should You Be on Instagram Threads?10 Jul 202300:14:08

Last week, Meta launched Instagram Threads and it already has over 100 million downloads!

Just what you wanted, another social media app to worry about, right? Well, I have a quick intro to Instagram Threads as well as my pros and cons of the platform so far.

The energy on the app is sort of like the early days of Twitter or chat rooms near the turn of the millennium. There's a lot happening and it's all rushing by at lightning speed.

Whether the platform has the endurance to stick around in the already crowded social media landscape, there are opportunities for photographers as well as other visual creatives and podcasters (yes, showing some love for my podcast community).

From image quality to discovery to how to take advantage of the sign up process to get more followers, there is a lot packed into this short episode.

Be sure to listen and then get on threads while the shiny new feeling is still on the app. Use this time to make important connections and broaden your network. And just have fun. Be warned, though, there are some difficulties with the app.

But those are growing pains, right?

While you are over there, be sure to follow me:

098 - Fair Use or Infringement? Exploring Intellectual Property and Photography20 May 202300:35:47

Intellectual property and copyright laws are something that should interest anyone who is involved in the photography industry. The digital age has made it easier and easier for artistic work to be disseminated and copied.

In recent years, theSupreme Court has been hearing more and more intellectual property cases and this week they sent down a decision ruling against the Andy Warhol Foundation in a copyright infringement case versus photographer Lynn Goldsmith. However, does the decision make the sometimes murky waters of 'fair use' and 'transformative' works any clearer?

What will the impact of the ruling be? What should photographers know about intellectual property law and copyright infringement? You can click here to check out the SCOTUS decision, which includes Justice Kagan's dissenting opinion complete with visual examples and references to other art forms to clarify her points.

About My Guest

Jessica Silbey is a professor of law at Boston University. She teaches and writes in the areas of intellectual property, constitutional law, and law and the humanities.

In her book, Against Progress: Intellectual Property and Fundamental Values in the Internet Age, "Professor Silbey considers intellectual property debates in law and culture as a bellwether of changing social justice needs in the 21st century. The book argues that intellectual property law is becoming a central framework through which to discuss essential socio-political issues, extending ancient debates over our most cherished constitutional values, refiguring the substance of "progress" in terms that demonstrate the urgency of art and science to social justice today."

095 - AI and the Future of Photography: A Discussion of its Uses, Advancements, and Ethics20 Apr 202301:07:29

Are you, like me, slightly concerned with how advancements in AI are effecting the photography industry? On this episode of the Nerdy Photographer Podcast, we're diving deep into the world of AI and how it's changing the game when it comes to photography, photo editing, and art.

AI, or artificial intelligence, is quickly becoming a powerful tool in the photography world. From cameras that use AI to automatically adjust settings based on the scene, to software that can analyze photos and make editing suggestions, the possibilities are endless. But with all this new technology comes some important questions. How will AI change the way we approach photography and art? What does it mean for the role of the photographer and the artist? And perhaps most importantly, what are the ethical considerations when it comes to using AI in photography and art?

Seriously, since recording this episode, there have been several major AI advancement/announcements from Adobe's new AI art generator, Firefly, to Levi's announcing they will start using AI generated models to increase "diversity". Yeah, they really said that.

In this episode, we'll be exploring all of these questions and more, looking at real-world examples of AI in action, and discussing the implications of this new technology for the future of photography and art.

So sit back, relax, and join us as we explore the fascinating world of AI and its impact on the photography industry. Whether you're a photographer, artist, or just someone interested in the cutting edge of technology, this episode is sure to be a thought-provoking and informative journey.

094 - From Nashville to Nuptials: The Intersection of Music and Wedding Photography in 'In the Key of Love'06 Apr 202301:12:45

Do you really have to know anything about weddings to be a wedding photographer? I guess that depends on the situation, right? Are you in a Hallmark movie? If so, the answer is probably a resounding, "NO!"

Listen, I understand that I should not expect every movie that features a photographer to portray the profession in depth or with 100% accuracy. That being said, I do expect there to be at least some connection to reality.

On this episode of the Nerdy Photographer Podcast, we're talking about the Hallmark movie "In the Key of Love," where a singer-songwriter becomes a wedding photographer and, let's just say, she's not exactly the best at in the business. When her ex love interest and song writing partner shows up on the island where Maggie is the sole wedding photographer for his sister's wedding, the hilarity ensues.

In this episode, we will be discussing the comedic aspects of the movie and how it portrays the world of wedding photography. We will also be delving into the challenges and realities of starting a new career in photography, especially one as demanding as wedding photography.

So whether you're a fan of Hallmark movies, interested in the world of wedding photography, or just in the mood for a good laugh, I have a feeling you will enjoy this episode. Join us!

Have you ever considered getting into fine art school photography? Not entirely sure what that is? Luckily, today there are other options.

In this episode of the podcast, I speak with Connecticut portrait photographer, Lindsey Victoria, about the fine art school portrait niche and how you can get started on adding this service. Black Friday Buyers Beware!22 Nov 202200:15:03

Every photographer knows that Black Friday / Cyber Monday is the time when they will be bombarded with deals and discounts on gear and services. But does the 'savings' really live up to the hype?

I reached out to some of my friends in the photography world, as well as to you, the listeners, and Reddit for feedback on what are the worst things to spend money on for Black Friday and Cyber Monday or what they most regret purchasing. What were the answers? Well, there were some surprisingly common threads. You will have to listen to find out. No spoilers in the episode notes.

    Thanks to My Contributors

Special thanks to Steven Van Elk from the Wedding Photo Hangover Podcast, Melissa Johnstone from Filters Removed and Another Photographer Podcast, as well as Leighton DaCosta, Leandro Da Silva, and Devon Rowland for their input on this subject.

    Nerd Quests: X-Men10 Nov 202201:20:40

Why do I love the characters and stories of the X-Men so much? When I collected comics in my youth, I amassed a nearly 200 issues straight run of the Uncanny X-Men which included some of the most iconic storylines in Marvel Comics history, as well as numerous X-Men adjacent titles.

Something about these characters and the themes of being an outsider, accepting those who are different from us, and battling your own inner demons really spoke to me.

So, I sat down with Mike and Jessika from the Ten Cent Takes podcast to talk about the stories, characters, and themes from this X-Men run as well as the artists who created them.

    About My Guest

Leighton DaCosta, or "LD" as many know him by, is a Wedding and Fine Art Portrait Photographer based in Southern California. He started his photography business more than 15 years ago while serving in the Navy. Due to the military requirements, he learned to make his studio "interstate mobile" as he has operated for extended periods in Virginia, Florida, Utah, Georgia, South Carolina, and California. He's conducted photo assignments in exotic and remote places such as Dubai, Jamaica, and Aruba; as well as several years flying over Afghanistan.

Nerd Quests: Sean Connery06 Oct 202201:15:34

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of James Bond, I decided to go on a journey of nerdy self exploration with Agents Scott and Cam from the Spy Hards Podcast and discuss my appreciation for the OG Bond, Sean Connery.

My connection to Connery started at an early age as my mother loved his work. I quickly learned that mastering my imitation of the famous Scotsman was a great way to entertain her.

Connery's career post-Bond had its ups and downs. While I love Highlander, Hunt for Red October, The Rock, and other entries in Connery's filmography, there are some flops in there as well. He also made some curious decisions to turn down roles in The Matrix and Lord of the Rings films that became massive blockbusters.

In this episode, we delve into Connery's career both Bond and post-Bond and I gain a greater understanding of both my appreciation of his work and why he made some of the choices he did.

088 - The Content Creation Conundrum: How Photographers Balance Artistry and Promotion29 Sep 202200:52:36

Over the last few years it has become more and more important for photographers to be "content creators" in addition to taking still images. You are probably thinking, "Haven't we always been creating content because we are taking pictures?"

What I am talking about is photographers as content creators in the sense of having to put together behind the scenes videos or funny reels or TikToks just to get noticed online these days. I can post a still image shot and it will barely reach 10% of my followers on any platform.

When I post a video or reel, the analytics are off the charts. If you're trying to reach new people or even just the people who already follow you, you have to be more of a content creator than just a still photographer.

    087 - Photographers Taking Advantage15 Sep 202200:54:39

Have you noticed that more and more photographers are taking advantage of their peers these days? From desperately shilling their own products to trying to get other photographers to sign over their images for commercial use, this type of behavior has become more and more prevalent.

In this episode, I talk with Steven Van Elk from the Wedding Photo Hangover Podcast about this unsettling trend.

Nerdlet - Where Are the Original Artists?25 Aug 202200:03:41

I was recently watching a video about the lack of originality among artists on social media.

Well, the fault lies partially with us but mostly with social media algorithms that feed us people who are great at marketing themselves instead of people who are very good at their art.

I frequently see what I would refer to as mediocre art in lots of genres with hundreds of thousands, if not more, views because whoever is running the account knows how to market themselves. Or aggregator accounts that just post 'best of' pieces from a variety of artists. We have stopped allowing people to fail at their art.

And while failure is not something I would encourage when you are applying your art commercially (e.g. when someone is paying you), it is important to your growth as an artist. Unfortunately, it seems like too many 'artists' are chasing followers and likes to take the risks that would help them discover their own unique voice.

Only When I Dream Fine Art Photography Exhibition

Only When I Dream is a group exhibition curated by Beth Taubner and Andrew Coningsby. The exhibition is comprised of fine art photographs, original illustrations and one video and sound installation, all of which resonate with the exhibition topic. Artists exhibiting include renowned fine art photographers Morag Patterson, Ted Leeming, Claire Rosen, Gina Glover, multi-media artist Carol Sharp along with esteemed illustrators Sam Falconer and Martin O'Neill. Only When I Dream will stimulate the viewer as we ask them to go on a multiplicity of journeys with us.

The Celtic, poet, theologian, and philosopher John O'Donohue spoke about "the invisible world" that is constantly intertwining what we are able to know, and see. This exhibition is about memories and dreams, real or fabricated.

Dreaming can be moments that crystallize yearnings, ethereal and romantic. They can be stories that we conjure tied to memories from the past, or the imagined past, therefore nostalgic and informed by memory or longings. We might experience highly sensory and visual waking or sleeping dreams where the mind and imagination travel to distant lands, or just next door. Our dreams might conjure untamed places in the physical world we have been to and long to experience again.

O'Donohue said that a dream is a sophisticated, imaginative text full of figures and drama that we send to ourselves. These concepts are explored through the multi-dimensional language and visual landscape of Only When I Dream.

Only When I Dream will be on display at the Coningsby Gallery from August 30th until September 10th of 2022 from 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM. The gallery will be closed on September 4th. More information can be found at the gallery website - https://www.coningsbygallery.com/

083 - The Creative Spark: Insights and Inspiration for Revitalizing Your Artistic Process19 May 202200:53:47

Sometimes it can feel difficult to get creative in your photography. You feel like you have lost your creative spark or urge or mojo...however you choose to describe it!

Luckily for you, I sat down with fashion and portrait photographer Jonny Edward on this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast to discuss overcoming barriers to our creativity, including those self imposed hurdles, so that we can free up some creative space to help others as well.

It's really a great conversation and I hope you enjoy it.

    About My Guest

Jonny Edward is an internationally renowned fashion and editorial-portrait photographer, art director, and creative educator. They seek to empower expression and impel individuality in all they do and create. Nerd Quests: Dune05 May 202201:06:06
THE WORM IS THE SPICE. THE SPICE IS THE WORM!

Why am I the nerd that I am?

What does it take for a nerdy topic to make me emphatic in my feelings about it?

Why does Coke taste so much better than Pepsi?

These are just some of the questions we will tackle in NERD QUESTS, a new Nerdy Photographer Podcast series exploring topics near and dear to my nerdy little heart.

On this episode, I sit down with Jim from the Film Rage Podcast to talk about Dune. Not just the recent film production, or the 1980s David Lynch film, but all iterations of Frank Herbert's science fiction classic.

    082 - Full Circle with Leighton DaCosta21 Apr 202201:24:16

On this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, friend of the show Leighton DaCosta returns to talk about his recent trip to WPPI, hats, why he didn't like The Batman, and coming full circle as a photographer.

This is Leighton's fifth time on the podcast. You may remember our discussions about hiring other photographers to work for you, racism in the photo industry, or arguing about the best fictional photographers.

Much like our previous discussions, we cover a lot of ground, including why he didn't like The Batman, how much we're both looking forward to Top Gun: Maverick, and setting goals. However, we spend most of our time focusing on coming full circle as a photographer. What does that mean? You will have to listen and find out!

When not creating content of his own, Leighton diligently works at educating photographers and others in the industry in not only content creation but also in business practices geared for the creative.

You can check out Leighton's website at LeightonD.com, and follow along with him on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

    Happy Birthday14 Apr 202200:05:01

I'm discussing the current state of the podcast, what I learned from a recent incredible film that I watched, and a new type of episode I would like to add to the podcast.
