This is the third installment in our series of reading through and discussing The Accursed Share!

Georges Bataille was a weird little French guy writing weird fiction, erotic poetry, and doing all types of ill s**t. Then, he witnessed the world wars, the rise of Fascism, and the Total Mechanization of Earth and those who call it home; so, he set out to do something about it. That something? Write a book about "political economy" that forces a Copernican shift and brings the man out from behind the curtain - that "man" being the deep structure we know as Capital, and that curtain the prevailing Ideology, or Narrative, that leads us all to believe that we are in fact the ones calling the shots.

Bataille is essential for understanding Modernity, both for grappling with this otherworldly monster that intends to use up all our resources and convert us all into computronium; and for developing a ubiquitous "recognition" that we are all, in fact, Humans (whatever that means), and that we must give up this false belief in Capitalism and start managing our General Resources in a Social fashion, lest we blow ourselves up and leave the dolphins and octopuses to inherit our ruins.

The Dangerous Maybe and No Future join me for a discussion about films, Theory, Marxism, History, and some other stuff too! Spoiler alerts for Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence, which came out like twenty-five years ago, D.A.R.Y.L., which came out like forty years ago, Shane, which came out like seventy years ago, and some other films too.

This was a fun discussion, we use these films to discuss the notion of the Human and the Machine, and talk about that perennial Human insecurity; what makes me different from the trees and the rocks and the other “machines,” or “assemblages,” all around me?

We also talk a bit about History, Politics, and Marxism; we blow off some steam that’s been building up in the wake of someone, who remains unnamed but you can find it in a certain comment section, using Lenin in an absurd elitist way to tell us to shut up and stop being toxic and get back to work; and we just have some fun and shoot the s**t!!!

This one was fun! I’m glad we all watched these films and talked about them together!! Shout out to all the homies and your families, we’ll see you on the next one!!

In this episode, The Dangerous Maybe and I talk about a few things. We planned on reading from Todd’s Book, The Cambridge Introduction to Jacques Lacan, and discussing some concepts of “Late Lacan.” We still accomplished this, but we were also kinda preoccupied with breaking events, namely the violent death of far right provocateur Charlie Kirk. We also discuss a piece from Levi Bryant on The Capitalist Discourse and how Superego might give those of us less enamored by “Late Lacan” some insight into Sinthome. We also discuss the problem with Marxism in today’s world, and loft an excellent idea for a documentary series.

Todd doesn’t appreciate it when people go on about just how impactful he is/has been on contemporary Theory and Philosophy, so I won’t—but I will say that I respect and look up to Todd more than just about anybody else.

Todd lofts a very powerful Hegelian interpretation of Intelligence, tells us why all the current Girard hype might be a bit mistaken, and opines on Freedom, Utility, Finitude, Creativity, and Subjectivity.

The Dangerous Maybe and I read Nick Land’s short piece, What Is Intelligence, and have a two-hourish conversation about it.

How one defines intelligence might seem a bit too academic for the average-everyday person to care about, it might seem like it doesn’t really matter because we all, ostensibly, have it, and it’s safe to take it for granted; it’s one of those things about which one could sit around and gather wool and bellybutton-lint all day, but when it comes to the important business of living daily life, there are just so many more important things to worry about!

Sure. But also, it kinda matters. A lot.

There are a lot of people who take Intelligence for granted, and who are currently developing globe-spanning technologies and tools that are already radically changing the world we live in, and whose effects will only accelerate and intensify as we hurtle deeper into the Dark Future. Many of these people, in fact I’m confident that most, mean well, and genuinely believe that they are doing work to improve the lives of all Humans here on our lovely little Pale Blue Dot. The thing is, without critically investigating the notion of Intelligence, these well-meaning people are actively working to accelerate contact with catastrophe.

I’m not saying that Mikey and I have the answers, that we have it all figured out and that people who don’t share our views are evil or dumb or wrong, or at least I’m not trying to say that—what I am trying to say is this—we should probably pump the brakes a bit and reexamine our trajectory, reexamine our presuppositions, and maybe turn the certainty and the utility sliders down a bit, we may not get another chance…

The Dangerous Maybe is back for a follow-up discussion all about Orthogonality!

In this episode we go deeper into both of the Nick’s, Land and Bostrom, positions; trying to tease out all the threads and follow them where they lead.

My favorite part of this episode is the discussion of Konsciousness, but I’ll leave it at that and let Mikey do the talking!

The episode ends with us asking whether or not it would be appropriate to ascribe Human values to something from the Outside, such as Cthulhu. We think not. Why, then, do so many people seem comfortable assigning Human Values to A.I.?

Yo yo yo!! Whats’s crackin’? Yesterday Rudi and I read a little bit of Adorno and Horkheimer’s Dialectic of Enlightenment. We talked about a lot of other stuff too. We streamed this live on YouTube, and I thought it was going to just live there , but this morning I thought about the fact that there are, in fact, people who don’t watch YouTube the same way I do, but they might still get something out of this reading/conversation/exercise in furiosly grapsing at something just outside of our reach - so, here we go, a four-hour Negativity Hour episode!

I love Rudi, I’m always happy to talk to him, and I’m glad that he has now made the only two guest spots on this podcast!! Give it a listen, give it a like, share it with someone you love, or maybe someone you hate, or maybe someone you used to know well but haven’t spoken to in like six years but you’ve been thinking about them and think this might be an interesting way to re-break the ice and strike up a convo with them, you could be like “Heh, lol, look at how stupid these guys are, I’m way smarter than these guys, don’t you think? The horror of hearing your own voice played back through a speaker, how names reduce us to characters in a stageplay, and what the f**k am I even doing here?

I tried recording while on my skateboard at my local skatepark. Don’t think it’s great, don’t think it’s complete trash, whatever, up to you to decide. Ultimatley, this serves as a proof of concept, for myself I guess, that I can, and in fact do, try to get outside of the prison that I wake up in every morning.

I was joined by a goood friend, Rudi, all the way from Germany! This recording sprung up from a conversation we were having, in which we discussed personal stuff, but at some point we started passionately talking theory and decided to launch into a two hour Podcast!

This is episode zero of my new Substack Pod. I posted it as a normal post yesterday, before I realized I can actually go into the site and make this a proper podshow, so I did that, and this is the same episode as yesterday. I’m gonna change the name at some point, and, like, do this better, but for now this is what you get. No idea what the schedule will be like, no idea what the format will be, no idea how long I’ll keep doing this, but, yeah, check it out. Mikey and I engage in an accelerated reading of Nick Land’s blog post Capital Escapes, written in 2014 and collected in Xenosystems. This short pieces is a nice addition to the readings we’ve been doing and the conversations we’ve been having; it touches on the statement Capital=Modernity=Acceleration (tech autonomization), it addresses the question of the Political when the Future has already been Enframed, and it reinforces the (properly) Marxist view that Capital is an Object unto itself.
