Most of us. 

After all, this is the origin we came from: pencils and pens and paper and paint. How many of us dream of returning to that, as a fulltime vocation?

I know a lot of us do.

Let me share the third cut from my conversation with Manuel Huertas Marchena. 

When I first wanted to record Manuel's experiences, there was a certain moment that was etched into my mind: How Manuel calmly handles explosive situations in the studio. Him and I have often gone over such incidents in our conversations; moments where you wish you had it on tape. So in this episode I try to tease out of him his mindset for handling situations, where superiors try to put him under undue pressure.

We also talk about the pluses and minuses of being obsessive about our work as texture artists. Manuel also shares his approach for increasing the quality of his texture work.

Eagerly back for the second slice of my conversation with the world's most famous texture artist, Adam Capone.

This is the part I really wanted to explore: 

When you have an artist, or you yourself have a period in your life, where you are outrageously creative, and then it changes? What happens? What causes it? Where does it go? What does it feel like for the artist in question?

Adam was a wildly creative maverick when I first met him. Over the years he has changed into something completely different. He still has a large personal output of art projects, but the subject matter and the nature of them are night and day different.

What happened? 

Trying to uncover that, we work our way around a lot of topics that influence, shape and motivate artists. 

As artists we strive for perfection. But “perfection” is rarely available to us in the commercial world...

Do you know Adam Capone? Probably not. He quietly goes about his work as an artist in games development. He definitely doesn't seek out the limelight. Which is odd, as he is probably the world's most famous texture artist!

I had the good fortune to meet Adam when we were both studying at University of Teesside for a career in games and 3D art. I easily count him as the most creative person I have ever met – which says something after all these years working as an artist. To me, he is the next Tim Burton, we never had. So I am both very interested in what he gets up to, as well as excited to present him to you.

This is the first slice of a three and a half hour long conversation. Naturally we are easing into the conversation here in the first episode, as two friends catching up, but we keep exploring more and more serious issues as the interview progresses.

The catastrophe has not been called off. Yet. The Hollywood strikes are resolved, supposedly. But obviously it will take time to rebuild what the drought has destroyed. Hiring has started again as a trickle here and there. But the whole “strikes are over and now everybody go back to work” was of course never going to materialise. So most people out there are still hurting.

This period, in the VFX industry's history, has been a grim reminder that we are living in a house of cards. Many, if not all, artists have had to have some serious reflection on their career, and what their future will look like.

You know I am a huge fan of Chris Nichols. Not only because of his texture work and his passion for our art and craft – but also because he is such a grounded yet thought-provoking person to speak to. This perfectly fits with the times we are living through.

This episode, I count as my most personal yet. Listening, and re-listening to my conversation with Chris has brought a lot of aha-moments and paradigm shifts for me personally. We talk a lot about our experiences being artists, and how that relates to jobs, studios and even hiring other artists.
