Have you ever walked into a home where the soft furnishings all seem to match? I’m not referring to a 90s perfect match either but rather an elevated, stylish and friendly but lived in match. As if the room itself is inviting you in, to spend some time in it. Soft furnishings are items that are made using fabric. These are curtains, blinds, bedding such as quilts, bedspreads and pillows. Interior designers will often use custom made soft furnishings to create comfortable and inviting interiors in any room. Soft furnishings are used to add texture, colour, and pattern to existing or new decor and decorating elements. These items can be used to add subtle colour, soften sharp lines, and give any room a bespoke look. Soft furnishings may also be used to define a room’s function, such as a cozy reading nook. | Interior Design Trends & How Interior Designers Use Them | 04 juil. 2023 | 00:04:48
Interior designers use trends to create designs that reflect current tastes. They often incorporate new interior design materials, colors, styles, and textures into their designs to create modern, updated spaces that introduce the current trends. The client brief is what guides the extent that including current trends in Interior Design occurs. Sometimes clients want minimal trend pieces added to their spaces. This client will then have the option to easily change out these pieces when a new trend comes. Items such as scatter cushions and decorator pieces work in this instance. On other occasions a client may want their interior design to be completely on trend and current. It's often in Commercial applications when this happens. They may also integrate high-tech appliances and fixtures for a contemporary feel. Additionally, interior designers follow emerging trends in the industry, such as green building, energy-efficient appliances, and sustainable materials, to offer clients eco-friendly options. A Interior Designer is trained in working trends into a variety of Interior Styles seamlessly or in some cases to create interest and friction. In residential design, trends can be introduced in full or in part with a contemporary or traditional base for the investment or larger pieces of furniture and then trends can be threaded through with decor items such as scatter cushions, decorator accessories, art and rugs. | Colour Psychology and How Interior Designers use it | 06 juin 2023 | 00:08:56
Interior designers use colour psychology to inspire different moods in a space. Colours have the power to create a positive atmosphere, energize a space, provide a sense of calm, or even create a feeling of warmth. By understanding colour psychology and how different colours impact people’s emotions, designers can create a successful and purposeful space. For example, blue and green create a calming relaxed atmosphere. The colour yellow is used to bring a cheerful and vibrant environment. Red is used to portray a sense of passion. Designers can also use a combination of multiple colours to achieve a specific mood.
What is colour psychology?
Colour psychology is the study of how colour affects our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It looks at how colours influence our decisions, influence our reaction to different situations, affect our mood and behaviour, and even our perceptions of the world. Colour psychology is used in marketing, therapy, art and design, among other disciplines. It can be truly transformative.
The best colour choices for a living room depend on the style, lighting, design and home owners personal colour responses and preferences. Generally speaking, lighter hues are ideal for brightening a space and making it look larger. Variations of beige, neutrals, whites all make beautiful choices for a living room. If Interior Designers are looking for something more dynamic they will consider greens, blue and touches of warm tones like orange and red to add a bit of character and life to the room. | What Top Techniques do Interior Designers Use to Style a Room? | 02 mai 2023 | 00:05:52
This episode is also available as a blog post: https://mydecorator.com.au/2023/05/02/what-top-techniques-do-interior-designers-use-to-style-a-room/ Have you ever browsed a magazine, or scrolled through Pinterest or Instagram interiors where the room looks absolutely amazing and wondered how the creator put that beautiful, somewhat effortless yet stylish room together? Believe me, a lot goes into creating these gorgeous rooms and below we share some techniques that Interior Designers use. 1. A room that has been designed by an Interior Designer, is one that stems from a very well thought out design plan. The Designer will have measured, and then strategically put together a plan, be it virtual, or hardcopy in a moodboard that they then used to implement from. 2. Interior Designers will sometimes begin their design with a statement piece. Before filling a space with furniture and decor, a designer may choose a bold statement piece to anchor the room and then use this as inspiration for the rooms design. 3. A Interior Designer will Incorporate layers of texture. Adding texture to a room creates visual dimension and interest. Whether it’s through patterned or textured fabrics, wood-grain finishes, natural elements, or different metals, layers of texture always help to make a room feel elevated and inviting. 4. Designers will use repetition and colour when choosing decor items for their rooms. 5. A Interior Designer understands the importance of balance when designing a space. They incorporate symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial balance to create harmony between all the elements of the rooms design. 6. Interior Designers will mix and match old and new. Combining old and new pieces gives depth to a space and makes it look lived-in. Using family heirlooms, antique market finds, and vintage artwork to create unique, one-of-a-kind designs. 7. Interior Designers know that lighting sets the tone and mood of any given room. Designers will use a varied mix of task, mood and accent lighting in their designs. We hope you found these seven techniques inspire you to gain a deeper understanding of all the ‘behind the scenes’ strategies that Interior Designers use to bring beautiful rooms that they design to life. | 3 Ways to Add Personality to a White Kitchen | 19 mai 2021 | 00:07:35
This episode is also available as a blog post: https://mydecorator.com.au/2021/05/19/3-ways-to-add-personality-to-a-white-kitchen/ When it comes to kitchens it’s understandable that a lot of people tend to go with white, this is because it’s timeless and won’t date. Kitchens are a big investment, we spend a lot of time in them and they need to be very functional but we think they should also look good. The argument for why people put in white kitchens is because it’s a neutral base, but sometimes with neutrals, they can look bland and lack personality. So how can you add some personality to your white kitchen (or any kitchen), we are going to chat through three ways below.
One of the best ways to add personality is with colour. The key here is to use a colour that already exists in your home, ideally in the room that is next to your kitchen. You may have a wallpaper or feature wall in a beautiful rich cognac, why not paint your wall that is at the end of your galley kitchen this colour, then add some cognac to your benchtops with a beautiful rich muted textured stone vessel also in cognac that holds a range of timber utensils to pick up the warmth from the cognac too. You could also repeat this colour in other items in your kitchen as well. 2. Decor Why should our kitchen look like a kitchen? Consider adding a select few non-kitchen items into your kitchen to meld your living areas and kitchen together. Place some coffee table books on your island, a vase of your favourite fresh flowers, an oversize sculpture that usually sits on your hall table, on your kitchen benchtop instead. Add some indoor plants, or hang them over your island cascading down to create a statement. Lean some art against your splashback, or sit it on a mini easel and rotate it out from time to time with different pieces. Add a mirror against one wall and place a multitude of varying height pieces including plants in front to add some dimension and intrigue to your kitchen. Sit a Persian rug on the floor, this will not only look great but will also be softer underfoot when cooking not to mention hide a multitude of spills and soften any drops that may happen, preventing possible breakages. 3. Lighting There is nothing worse then a poorly lit kitchen, but in saying this i’m not for one that is over done in the lighting department either. We think it’s important to have two types of lighting in a kitchen, task lighting and mood lighting. The key factor that can be used to tie these together is warm lighting, especially when it comes to mood lighting. I know when I’m cooking dinner in my kitchen I well and truly need to see what I’m doing, so my task lighting is on for this but at the end of the night when the dishwasher is running and I’m sitting down relaxing I want to look across and see some mood lighting, that lights my kitchen enough to be able to poor myself a drink and just adds to the evening wind-down ambiance that I like to create across all the zones in my home. I like to bring in mood lighting with a lamp that I sit on my kitchen benchtop that splays light up the wall, I also sometimes turn my rangehood light on too. I also like to place some candles and my oil burner on my benchtop as well. This works very well in open-plan living spaces in particular.

| Thoughts on Trends | 24 févr. 2021 | 00:05:46 | |
This episode is also available as a blog post: https://mydecorator.com.au/2021/02/24/thoughts-on-trends/ Last week I had a lovely lady ask me if I followed trends. I answered no, not usually in full because trends come and go. I explained that when clients work with me they are wanting their interior designed spaces to last longer than a trend. If a client is wanting a current trend applied in their home this is definitely something we can do. If I do have a client that is wanting their interior to be ‘on trend’ I’ll often delve a little deeper to determine is this because they want their interior to look this trend long, or short term as this will help me know which direction to design when it comes to selections for their home. Sometimes I have clients that would like their interiors to have a timeless base design, meaning key investment furniture items like lounge suites, dining, hall tables, bedroom suites, and classic flooring, window coverings etc… are chosen to last the test of time from a style point of view and then wall colour, scatter cushions, throw rugs, art, some rugs and decorator items can be changed seasonally and be more ‘on trend’ as an opportunity to freshen up a look. So what is trending at the moment and how can these trends be used to do a full decorating scheme or a part scheme. What we are seeing more of in 2021 from a trend point of view: Organic natural finishes such as wicker, rattan, natural fibres like wool, silk, linen. Handmade earthenware and pottery – create a homey cocoon this 2021 with natural finishes, occasional furniture in ratan or wicker, use natural fibres for cushions and rugs and you’ll never want to leave the house again. Less white, more neutrals and accents of colour – now is the time to bring in some mature, muted or soft dusty colour into your homes interior by way of wall colour, and decor just do it in a purposeful and restrained way for the best effect. Separate rooms and zoning, moving away from open plan living so that spaces are more multi-purpose in function – are you finding you just need your own space to breath? A lot of homeowners feel the same. Opting to renovate and add in more seperate living spaces for their homes. Conscious consumerism, investing in quality key pieces and sourcing from local suppliers – Granmillenial, nostalgic approach to traditional decor with a nod to vintage bespoke decor pieces, again don’t go overboard and do your whole home in this style or it will look like you’ve moved into your Grandmothers home but touches of vintage mixed in with contemporary pieces certainly go a long way in adding unique personality to a home. I’ve popped together a little gallery below showing past trends in Kitchens, as it’s often Kitchens that date a house before any other room. It’s interesting to see by looking back how sometimes following a trend or part of a trend can work and other times it can be like creating a time capsule from that period. Obviously over a period of ten years kitchen trends journey through a lot of different styles but hopefully you can see from the below just how trends do impact and mark our interior spaces. You’ll see with the 1970’s and 1980’s wallpaper (which is easy to change out) played a big part. The 2000’s kitchen could still be current today if the barstools, light fighting and wall colour were changed out. Hopefully, this gives you an understanding of exactly how you choose to use or not use trends in the interior of your home. Whichever way you like to follow or not follow trends at the end of the day if you take the time to carefully choose a trend that you love, apply sections of that trend with measure you will always love the outcome. If you would like assistance in implementing a trend into your home be it in full or part, we’d love to assist you to create your dream home.
