When Protecting Your Team Becomes Disempowering21 sept. 202600:24:12

Have you ever decided not to give someone feedback because you thought they would become defensive? Or not told someone about an opportunity because you assumed they were already too busy? Or avoided a difficult conversation because you didn't want to upset the other person?

It can feel considerate.

It can even feel like good leadership.

But what if, without realizing it, you're actually taking away that person's ability to choose for themselves?

As leaders, we sometimes make decisions for other capable adults based on assumptions about what they can or cannot handle.

We tell ourselves we're protecting them.

But in doing so, we may be taking away their agency, information, learning, and opportunities to grow.

And there's another side to this: we may also be taking away our own opportunity to grow as leaders.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • How seemingly caring leadership decisions can unintentionally disempower others
  • Why our assumptions about how someone will react can start to feel like facts
  • The important difference between being responsible for how we communicate and trying to control someone else's reaction
  • Why discomfort is not necessarily the same as harm
  • How avoiding difficult conversations can prevent both you and your team members from developing
  • Why empowerment requires trusting people with choices, feedback, opportunities, and sometimes uncomfortable truths
  • A simple set of questions to help you recognize when you may be deciding what another adult can handle

Sometimes empowering someone isn't about giving them more responsibility.

Sometimes it's about trusting them enough to give them the information, let them experience their own emotions, and allow them to decide what happens next.

And trusting yourself enough to handle the discomfort that may come with it.

Why Some Uncertainty Feels Exciting—and Other Uncertainty Feels Terrifying14 sept. 202600:20:59

Have you ever wondered why some uncertainty can feel exciting, while other uncertainty feels terrifying?

Starting a new job, moving to a new country, or taking on a new challenge can involve enormous uncertainty—and yet we may feel confident we'll figure it out. Meanwhile, uncertainty around funding, conflict, organizational change, or politics can leave us feeling anxious and powerless.

So perhaps uncertainty itself isn't the problem.

In this episode, Torrey explores what shapes our experience of uncertainty—and why our beliefs about what might happen, where we focus our attention, and how much we trust ourselves to handle what comes next can make such a difference.

You'll also learn why your relationship with uncertainty matters not only for your own resilience, but for how you lead your team—and how looking back at everything you've already navigated can remind you that you're far more capable of handling uncertainty than you may realize.

In This Episode You'll Learn:
  • Why some uncertainty feels exciting while other uncertainty feels threatening
  • Three things that influence how we experience uncertainty
  • How focusing on what you can't control can increase feelings of helplessness
  • Why trusting your ability to respond may be more useful than trying to create certainty
  • How your relationship with uncertainty influences the way you lead your team
  • How your past experiences can help you build greater confidence and resilience in the face of the unknown

Key Quote

“Resilience isn't certainty that everything will turn out the way you want. It's knowing that uncertainty can be present and you can still move forward.”

Reflection Questions
  • What uncertainty are you facing right now?
  • Where are you directing most of your attention—toward what you can influence or what you can't?
  • What have you already handled that you once didn't know how you would handle?
  • What did those experiences teach you about yourself?
  • What strengths did you discover because you needed them?
  • What evidence does your own history give you that you can respond to whatever happens next?
  • How do you want to show up as a leader while you don't yet know what comes next?

Pressure Reveals Your Values: Staying True to What Matters When Things Get Hard22 juin 202600:29:17

What happens to your leadership when the pressure is on?

Most organizations have values written on their websites. But according to today's guest, our real values are revealed not when things are easy—but when uncertainty, competing priorities, and difficult decisions force us to choose how we will respond.

In this episode, I speak with Kim Kucinskas, Director of the TIME Transformation Lab at Humentum, about what it means to lead with integrity during a time of unprecedented change in the humanitarian and development sector.

Together, we explore why many traditional leadership approaches are becoming less effective, how uncertainty is changing the skills leaders need, and how values can serve as a practical guide when there are no perfect answers.

Whether you are leading a team through funding cuts, organizational change, or simply trying to navigate an increasingly complex world, this conversation offers practical insights on how to stay grounded in what matters most.

In This Episode, You'll Learn:

• Why values are more than words—and how they show up through daily behaviors

• What "pressure reveals values" really means for leaders

• Why self-awareness is essential for values-based leadership

• How uncertainty is reshaping leadership in the humanitarian and development sector

• The difference between leadership skills that worked in stable environments and those needed today

• How to make decisions with integrity when there is no clear right answer

• Why courage is required to lead change, even when others around you are not

• How values audits can help organizations bring their values to life

• Practical ways to strengthen collaboration during times of scarcity and competition

• The powerful concept of "elbows down, not elbows out"

• Why the future is built through the small choices leaders make every day

Memorable Quotes:

"Values are the fancy words on the website. Behaviors are where values show up in everyday life."

"Pressure doesn't create values—it reveals them."

"We often seek moral clarity. What if instead we focused on making decisions with integrity, even when they aren't perfect?"

"Leadership today requires us to bridge and build at the same time."

"We can't control uncertainty, but we can control how we show up within it."

As leaders, we're often encouraged to be more curious.

Ask better questions. Make fewer assumptions. Seek to understand before being understood.

But can curiosity ever go too far?

In this episode, Torrey explores a question raised by one of her students: When does curiosity cross the line into getting into other people's business?

Drawing on her coaching and leadership experience, she unpacks the important distinction between genuine curiosity and the type of questioning that is driven by assumptions, judgment, or a desire to confirm what we already believe.

You'll learn why curiosity is one of the most powerful leadership skills—and how to ensure it builds trust rather than fueling gossip, rumors, and misunderstanding.

In This Episode You'll Learn:
  • Why curiosity is essential for effective leadership
  • The difference between seeking understanding and seeking confirmation
  • How assumptions can disguise themselves as curiosity
  • Why healthy curiosity respects boundaries
  • A simple question to ask yourself before asking someone else a question

Key Quote

"Curiosity seeks understanding. Toxic curiosity seeks confirmation."

Reflection Questions
  • What assumptions might I be making about the people around me?
  • Am I asking questions to understand—or to confirm what I already believe?
  • Where might I need to be more curious in my leadership conversations?

How Smart NGO Leaders Use Imposter Syndrome as a Growth Signal23 mars 202600:30:28

What if that voice telling you “you’re not ready” is actually the clearest sign that you’re growing into your next level of leadership?

If you’ve ever questioned your readiness, felt like an imposter, or hesitated to step into bigger opportunities, you’re not alone—especially in high-pressure humanitarian and development roles where expectations are high and support is limited.

In this episode, I sit down with Birgit Hermann, a leadership coach, author, interim executive, and strategy partner, to explore how self-doubt shows up for leaders—and how to navigate it. The #1 Mistake Keeping NGO Leaders Stuck in “Not Enough”16 mars 202600:13:40

Have you noticed how quickly your motivation drops when the thought “there’s not enough” starts dominating your leadership thinking?

In the humanitarian and development sector, funding cuts, layoffs, and limited resources can easily create a sense of scarcity. When leaders start believing there isn’t enough—time, funding, staff, or opportunities—it can quietly reduce creativity, confidence, and action. This episode explores how shifting your mindset can help you lead with possibility and regain control, even in uncertain environments.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  1. How to recognize when “not enough” is a thought pattern rather than an objective fact.
  2. A practical way to shift the story you’re telling yourself so you can move from discouragement to proactive leadership.
  3. A simple mindset practice that helps you notice existing resources and opportunities so you can lead with greater creativity and momentum.

Are you trying to reduce stress by changing jobs, teams, or organizations—only to find the same pressure showing up again somewhere else?

In the humanitarian and development sector, stress often feels unavoidable due to funding uncertainty, demanding workloads, and high expectations. If you’ve ever wondered why burnout patterns repeat even after changing roles, this episode explores a powerful shift that can help you handle pressure differently and lead with greater resilience and clarity.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  1. Why changing your circumstances alone often doesn’t eliminate stress in high-pressure humanitarian environments.
  2. How shifting from avoidance to leadership growth can help you handle challenges without being consumed by them.
  3. Practical reflection questions that help you identify where stronger boundaries and self-leadership can transform your experience at work.

Why Some Leaders Thrive While Others Burn Out as a NGO Supervisor20 oct. 202500:07:55

Will you finish your current leadership role having achieved the impact you set out to create — or will you leave wondering what actually changed?

If you often end days buried in email and back-to-back meetings, feeling drained but unsure whether anything you did really mattered, this episode is for you. It compares two leader types — one who thrives and achieves lasting impact, and one who burns out while getting short-term results — and shows why aligning daily actions (not just ambitions) and shifting your mindset are the missing links between busy work and meaningful leadership.

Listen to learn how to:

  • Spot the everyday habits that steal your time and keep you misaligned with your leadership impact.
  • Use a simple alignment check (like a daily compass) to make small choices that add up to big, lasting results.
  • Reframe the beliefs that drive reactive behavior so you can act like the future leader you want to become — energized, focused, and fulfilled.

Tap play to discover the practical alignment habits and mindset shifts that will help you turn busy weeks into measurable leadership impact.
