#31: Why Is Partner Dance So White? And How to Fix It05 Aug 202600:47:52

Is partner dancing losing its roots? What happens when we stop caring or asking about where a dance came from?

This week, we're joined by Dave Harris for one of the most thought-provoking conversations we've had on the podcast. We dive into the intersections of dance, culture, history, identity, and what it really means to create an “inclusive place” - not just in theory, but in actual practice.

This isn't a surface-level conversation. It's an invitation to get curious on why there aren’t enough people of color in dance, challenge assumptions, and think more deeply about the future of fusion dance.

What we talk about in this episode:

1) Why aren't more people of color in partner dance?

  • The barriers that often go unseen.

  • Why saying "everyone is welcome" is *not* always enough.

  • Practical ways organizers and communities can create spaces where more people genuinely feel they belong.

2) Why dance, cooking, writing, and even sex have more in common than you think

3) When does fusion become colonial without organizers & teachers realizing it?

  • A thoughtful discussion on cultural exchange versus cultural extraction.

  • Why intention matters - but education matters too.

  • How honoring history can actually make us better dancers and humans

  • What gets lost when we separate a dance from the culture that helped shape it.

4) The hidden mental load of being "the only one"

  • What it's like to walk into a room where you're the minority.

  • The invisible emotional labor many dancers carry before they even step onto the dance floor.

  • Why belonging is about far more than receiving an invitation.

  • How empathy begins by listening to experiences different from our own.

5) Questions every dance community should be asking:

  • What voices are missing?

  • What kind of culture are we creating? —for today's dancers and the next generation?

This conversation may challenge you. It may make you uncomfortable in moments. And honestly? That's okay.

Some of the most meaningful growth happens when we're willing to stay curious instead of becoming defensive.

Whether you're a dancer, teacher, DJ, organizer, or someone who simply cares about building a stronger dance scene, we hope this episode sparks important and much needed conversations.

#30: Why Experienced Dancers Are Quietly Leaving22 Jul 202600:38:26

It’s SEASON 2 of The Fusion Dance Podcast!  We took a hiatus because we have been understaffed and overworked but we are back with more hot takes this time.

Is fusion dance losing its spark?

We have an honest conversation about the future of fusion, what makes dancers stay (or why many leave), and how DJs have more influence than you might think. From behind-the-booth lessons learned while DJing across the country to bigger questions about community growth, the concept of inclusivity, and vision, this episode challenges some of the thoughts people have about dance.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The DJ technique that instantly wins over a dance floor.
  • Why some fusion scenes stop growing (including LA's)
  • The uncomfortable truth about why dancers leave.
  • Are we making fusion too beginner-friendly?
  • What great organizers understand that others miss.
  • Our vision for the future of fusion dance.

Whether you're a dancer, DJ, organizer, or simply love thoughtful conversations about partner dancing, this episode is sure to get you thinking.

#28: Our Honest Take on The Bay (SF/Oakland) and "City in Motion" Event28 Oct 202501:12:23

We’re taking you behind the scenes of our recent trip to the San Francisco and Oakland fusion dance weekender — City In Motion.

We’re talking all about the highlights and lowlights from our experience, what made the Bay Area scene stand out, and how it compares to what we’re building right here in LA.

You’ll hear our honest thoughts on:

  • The vibe and style differences between LA and the Bay — is the Bay really that much better as people say?
  • What we saw at City In Motion that we’d love to bring back home to our local scene.
  • The growing conversation around contact improv on the social dance floor — how organizers view it and how dancers feel about it
  • Our favorite moment from the weekend that reminded us why we love this dance so much.

#27: What’s Your Dance Love Language? Plus The Power of Stillness15 Oct 202500:53:29

Today, we’re diving with Meredith Levine into one of the most often overlooked aspects of partner dancing: stillness.

We’re exploring how less can truly be more on the dance floor, and how presence, breath, and energy exchange can transform a simple step into a meaningful body conversation. You’ll also hear about the Six Dance Love Languages - that helps explain why certain dance partners just click, while others don’t.

What we talk about in this episode:

  • What the Six Dance Love Languages mean and how to find out which ones you are, and how understanding these “dance love languages” can help you connect more authentically with your partners and yourself.
  • How breath, connection, and energy exchange deepen the quality of your dance.
  • How to find that balance between quiet stillness and expressive energy - even when your partner’s style is totally different.
  • Simple ways beginners can start exploring stillness without feeling awkward or disconnected.

#26: Sacrificing Your Joy, Plus When Grief & Burnout Hits You As A Dancer22 Sep 202500:22:56

Hey friend, this episode is a deeply personal one. We’re talking about grief, growth, and how to keep your joy alive on the dance floor - even when life throws challenges your way.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Trang shares her reflection on her recent experience grief and depression, exploring the impact of losing someone in the dance community, a dance partner moving away, and what it taught her as a dancer and a person.

  • How teachers and more developed dancers need growth too, and why keeping elders inspired is essential to prevent burnout.

  • The balance between sacrificing your own joy to help others versus protecting your own body and energy.

  • Inspiration matters: beginners need to see what’s possible to spark their own growth.

#25: Stop Measuring Your Value by Your Last Dance (Practica Lesson)08 Sep 202500:30:39

In this episode, we’re diving into the heart of our dance Practicas (or, as one attendee called it, a “dance practice jam session”) and what we’ve been learning about ourselves, our partners, and our community through them.

So often, dancers tie their self-worth to how they’re perceived on the floor — the number of times they’re asked to dance, compliments they receive, or how “good” their last dance felt. It’s what we call conditional validation. And it can make trying something like a practica feel intimidating.

One of our attendees verbalized it perfectly: the struggle isn’t lack of knowledge or skill — it’s the self-consciousness and fear of being evaluated. He shared thoughts that many of us have silently carried for years: the anxiety around leading or following, the fear that if a partner isn’t enjoying the dance, somehow we’re not enough.

Our goal in Practicas is the opposite: we’re here to support growth, not scrutinize. To give you tools to have better dances, better connection, and more confidence -  without tying it to your self-worth.

💡 Topics we cover in this episode:

    • How Practicas help build confidence in both leading and following
    • Why self-criticism holds us back from truly enjoying the moment

    • The importance of Connection & Consent, Musicality, Movement Vocabulary, Adaptability, Creativity & Concept Integration, and Technical Mastery in your dance growth

    • How technique and control make your movements more grounded, efficient, expressive, and help prevent physical energy leaks.

    • Learning to adjust to different dancers, creating better experiences for your partners, and feeling more at ease with yourself

💡 Practicas (aka dance practice jams) at Fusion University are designed to:

    • Help you spot blind spots (like how you step or where you carry your weight)

    • Give hands-on feedback so you can feel what better connection is like

    • Workshop new ideas and moves with guidance

    • Build a culture where giving and receiving feedback is safe, constructive, and even fun

In the wild world of social dancing, you often don’t get that level of intentional feedback. Practicas are the bridge between “learning in class” and “dancing in the wild.”

    📅 Upcoming September Events:

    - Wed. Sept. 17, 2025 (Open Level Dance Practice Session - in Artesia, CA)

#24: When The Dance Community Turns a Blind Eye -The Cost of Looking Away18 Aug 202500:47:28

    Hey friend,

Today's episode is *not* lighthearted. It’s not a “fun” topic. But it’s one we cannot afford to keep sweeping under the rug.

Today, we’re having a real talk about unsafe people in the dance scene — how abuse of power shows up, why character matters, and what we as a community can do about it.

Because here’s the truth: We’re not here to please everyone. We’re here to protect our people.

We’ve heard the stories. We’ve seen the reports. And too often, people turn away, minimize, or say “Oh, it doesn’t seem that bad.” Meanwhile, dancers are getting hurt.

In this episode, we dig into:

    • Why do communities wait until things get really bad before taking action

    • The abuse of power that happens when management, DJs, or top people aren’t held accountable

    • What it feels like when survivors are minimized, dismissed, or not believed

    • The responsibility of organizers — what is our role, where does the line get drawn, and what are your protocols when an unsafe person shows up at your event?

    • Why speaking up matters, even if it feels scary or unpopular

Our Call to Action for You:

    • Survivors: We would love to learn from you. What would have helped you then and what would help you now? Your story matters.

    • Dancers: If something feels off, don’t wait. Don’t keep it to yourself. Go to your organizer, someone you trust, or even the authorities. Your report becomes part of a paper trail that can protect others.

    • Organizers: What’s your protocol when unsafe people show up? .

This work we do is not for the faint of heart. It’s not for people-pleasers. But if we can be the first to start talking about it openly, maybe others will feel safer to share, too.

Because silence helps no one. Awareness is how we stop falling prey.

After you listen, we encourage you talk about this with someone you trust in your dance community.

Community grows stronger when we connect, when we share, and when we stand up together.

#23: The FU Dance Rubric & Why Practicas Can Change Your Dance Game12 Aug 202500:56:33

Today’s episode is a sneak peak into something we’ve been building behind the scenes that’s going to seriously elevate your dancing — Fusion University’s Dance Rubric — and why our Practicas (dance practice jam) are becoming a favorite space for learning, experimenting, and actually feeling the growth in your dance.

    Here’s the thing:

You can’t improve what you can’t measure. If we’re going to define what “good” is in partner dancing, we need a way to measure it — without slipping into perfectionism or crushing creativity.

We talk about our six Guiding Principles and what they mean in this episode.

No matter what your dance background is — WCS, blues, tango, ballroom, salsa — this rubric helps you see both your strengths and where you can grow. It’s not about “you’re good” or “you’re bad.” It’s about giving you the tools to create better experiences for your partners and for yourself.

    ______

    We also get into:

    • How dancing is co-creation, not just self-expression — and how to adjust to your partner without losing yourself.

    • Why “mixed reviews” of a dance often come down to one or two areas in the rubric — and how identifying them can change everything.

    • How Practicas are different from regular socials (think: guided, intentional, and full of “aha!” moments you can’t get from YouTube).

    • Real-time feedback that’s like adding just the right spice to a dish — you don’t have to take every suggestion, but the ideas open new layers and textures in your dance.

💡 Practicas (aka dance practice jams) at FU are designed to:

    • Help you spot blind spots

    • Give hands-on feedback so you can feel what better connection is like

    • Workshop new ideas and moves with guidance

    • Build a culture where giving and receiving feedback is safe, constructive, and even fun

In the wild world of social dancing, you often don’t get that level of intentional feedback. Practicas are the bridge between “learning in class” and “dancing in the wild.”

#22: Why We Almost Quit Fusion University (FU)05 Aug 202501:11:03

In this honest episode, we’re pulling back the curtain on what it’s really like to launch something like Fusion University.

We’re talking about the behind-the-scenes challenges, the moments that made us question everything, the heartfelt feedback that lifted us, and the unexpected the not so pretty parts that comes with being “an entity” versus just yourself. (Yup — people treat you differently. We’re going there.)

"We are bearing the burden of making this happen. So we are allowed to define how we want it to go. If we want a higher quality of dances in LA... then we’ve just got to make it happen." - Kalann

And that’s what FU is here to do: filling the gap.

    We also chat about:

    • The unspoken and hidden costs (emotionally, mentally, financially) of running dance socials and classes/practicas that no one warns you about

    • How being a guest is different when you’ve walked in the shoes of an organizer

    • What goes into making tough decisions that not everyone sees

    • Why feedback is gold—but also needs to be framed with curiosity

    ✨ Want to Help Out?

We LOVE when you ask how to support — here’s how:

    • We need help finding studio spaces, rec centers in LA (with price, parking,—all the goodies). And if you make us a spreadsheet of venues… we’ll take you out to dinner. Seriously.

    • Got social media skills? We have a backlog of videos to post!

    • Want to host a game night, leads or follows night in, or be part of community planning? Let’s talk.

    • Know where and how to research for grants? Message us, please!

    • Does connecting people to be able to go to dance through community outreach and/or creating and managing an LA / OC carpool group sound fulfilling? We’d love to have you!

    📅 Upcoming August Events:

    - Aug. 6 - Open Level Practica (Artesia, CA)

    -Aug. 15 - Latin Hustle x Fusion Movement Lab (Watts, CA)-Aug. 17

    - Beach Day (Rosie’s Dog Beach, in Long Beach, CA)

#18: Overcoming Conflict, Self-Doubt, and Comparison In Dance26 May 202500:44:53

Today’s episode dives deep into the fusion dance world, touching on the inner and outer conflicts we face as dancers. Whether it’s self-comparison, miscommunication, or navigating feedback, we’re unpacking it all with real-life experiences, tangible tips, and some mindset shifts.

We’ll hear from Kalann, who shares how he overcame self-deprecation and self-worth issues and the mental blocks that used to hold him back on the dance floor.

His TWO MAJOR tips will help you rethink how you approach your growth as a dancer and change the way you handle feedback and your overall dance experience.

We’ll also explore how little things—like what we say on the dance floor—can be taken in different ways, and how Trang navigated feedback about her words unintentionally hurting others. We’re breaking down how to take feedback constructively, open the door to meaningful conversations, and use it as a tool for growth.

*PLUS, we make a very exciting announcement towards the end, on the newest thing coming to LA’s fusion dance scene!

    Memorable Quotes:

    • "If you’re living for people’s validation, you’ll die from their criticism."

    • "You wouldn’t pick apart your friends, so stop doing it to yourself."

#12: Signs You Are Burnt Out From Dance and How to Bounce Back20 Jan 202500:28:16

Today, we’re diving into a topic that every dancer (yes, even the most passionate ones!) has faced at some point: burnout. Or as some people in the partner dance community like to call it, feeling "swung over." Whether it’s from too many late-night socials, rigorous practices, or even the mental and emotional demands of dance life, burnout is real. And it’s a conversation we need to have. What You'll Learn in This Episode:

The Burnout Connection: How burnout from dance mirrors other life experiences you have been through Signs of Burnout: From feeling bored or checked out to emotional exhaustion and even physical aches, we’ll unpack the telltale signs that it’s time to pause. Breaking the Routine: Why changing up your dance scene, trying a new style, or even taking a complete break can reignite your excitement. The Power of Rest: Learn how to recover effectively from burnout and give yourself permission to miss dance. Why This Matters: Just like an athlete recovering from an injury, giving yourself time to heal from burnout ensures you come back stronger, more inspired, and ready to shine on the dance floor. It’s okay to step back, reset, and embrace rest—whether that means slowing down your social schedule, indulging in self-care, or simply allowing yourself space to process. If you’ve ever felt the burnout blues, this episode is here to guide you back to your joy. So settle in, and let’s chat about how to keep dance (and life!) fresh, fun, and fulfilling. Ready to reignite your passion for dance? Tune in now and let’s get you back on the dance floor—feeling better than ever! — CONNECT WITH US! #9: Isn’t Fusion Dance Creepy? Misconceptions, Awkward Convos, and the Dance Social ‘Ick’09 Dec 202400:42:06

In today’s episode, we’re diving deep into the world of social dance with a fun, lighthearted, and totally real look at the “ick” moments and the random convos we dancers have in-between songs or after an event (you know what I’m talking about)! From perceptions of the fusion dance scene to the challenges of connecting with different dance partners, we’re unpacking it all!

Here’s a sneak peek of what we cover:

    Isn't Fusion Dance Creepy?

Trang shares a convo with a pro West Coast Swing dancer who had some opinions about his fusion dance scene. He talked about how some followers in fusion seem more "touch deprived" than actually focused on dancing – ouch! We break down his comments and share our own thoughts on the matter. Spoiler: we think fusion might need a little *rebrand* to emphasize the *dance* part of it!

The "Just Wing It" Crowd – Dance Pet Peeves!

Ever run into those dancers who don’t take classes, skip the fundamentals, and think they can just “wing it” on the dance floor? Yeah, we have too. We chat about the importance of building your skills and why just winging it doesn’t cut it in social dance.

Types of Dancers You Run Into at Events

From the over-stylers who look amazing but struggle with connection, to the mechanical dancers who just need more time to find their flow, we talk about the wide variety of people you meet at dance events and how their different styles can either enhance or challenge your dance experience.

What Makes a Good Dance Follower

Trang shares a major *a-ha* moment when she realized what really makes a good follower on the dance floor. We break down how the follower’s role is way more than just being led – it’s a skill all its own!

If you’re into social dancing, fusion, or even just curious about all the behind-the-scenes convos dancers have, this episode is *for you*. Tune in and laugh with us as we get real about the ick moments and dance floor dynamics we’ve all been through!

In our very first episode of *The Mix*, we dive deep into the world of partner dancing and explore the art of fusion dance! If you’ve ever been curious about what fusion dance is and why it's so special, this episode is for you. We’ll be chatting all about the freedom and creativity it offers dancers, and how it’s different from more structured dance styles.

    Here’s what you can expect:

**Our Dance Backgrounds**: Sharing how our individual dance journeys have shaped the way we approach partner dancing and fusion.

**The Creative Process on the Dance Floor**: Dance is art! We compare leading and following to painting on a canvas, with leads as the artist and followers as the paintbrush. Plus, we talk about dancing to the elements—air, water, earth, fire—and how different songs activate different energies.

**Leads and Followers**: What makes a great lead or follower? We discuss the importance of confident, clear connections and how creativity can unlock new dance moves.

**Choreography Inspiration & Dance Chemistry**: How do we find inspiration for freestyling and choreography? And how does the person we’re dancing with impact our creative choices?

We talk about reading your partner’s energy, experimenting with different styles and how we connect differently with various partners based on the song’s vibe and energy.
