Even in 2026, female-specific conditions, such as endometriosis, preeclampsia, uterine tumours, and the menopause still remain largely a mystery. Scientists in Valencia are trying to turn this around, hopefully changing the lives of the future generation of women. How? By figuring out how the uterus works exactly. But what if unravelling these conditions is not as straightforward as expected?

At the Carlos Simon Foundation in Valencia, young researchers are trying to unravel the mysteries of the uterus. And those are ubiquitous, as (often male) doctors and scientists overlooked female-specific conditions for centuries.

I travel to Valencia to meet Mari Carmen, who is looking at the tiny creatures living on the endometrium to figure out how endometriosis works. And I get to know Javier, who is working on a curious device in the basement.
