Mishlei 25:16-17 - Don't Make Your Friend Vomit (Part 2)
Length: 36 minutes Synopsis: This morning (2/12/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing the main approach from yesterday. We delved a bit deeper into the derech nigleh, trying to understand exactly what makes a person sick of his friend's presence. But our main goal was to focus on the derech nistar, which I WISH we had more time to explore! I'm especially happy with the idea we learned from Zerachiah Chein.
Someone recently asked me whether I find new chidushim in Mishlei. The question had the vibe of, "Don't you get bored?" I answered that we ALWAYS find new chidushim and we rarely get to more than a handful of meforshim before we have to move on. This week was yet another example. --- מקורות: משלי כה:טז-יז זרחיה בן שאלתיאל חן מצודת ציון/דוד מאירי -----

Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (2/11/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a pair of pesukim that might have been the inspiration for Ben Franklin's quip: "Guests, like fish, stink after three days." Shlomo ha'Melech's version, however, employs a gustatory mashal rather than an olfactory one. We developed one approach in-depth and a second approach after that. I'm most curious to see what the meforshim say tomorrow by way of the derech nistar. --- מקורות: משלי כה:טז-יז מצודת ציון תרגום רס"ג -----

Length: 37 minutes Synopsis: This morning (1/8/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we began with a quick review of yesterday's approaches, then moved on to the meforshim. We were pleased to see them echo our ideas, and to see how differently they took the central mashal. I'm excited to see how our theory of the "Anshei Chizkiyahu" chapters of Mishlei develops as we learn more from this section. --- מקורות: משלי כה:יג מצודת ציון/דוד פירוש הגר"א רלב"ג מאירי מלבי"ם --- The Torah content for the remainder of January is sponsored by Naomi Schwartz in memory of her father, Dovid Yitzchok ben Chaim Yeruchum Fishel z”l, who dedicated his life to learning and teaching Torah to countless students b’simcha. Mishlei 15:13 - Happy Faces and Sad Hearts (Part 1)
Length: 30 minutes Synopsis: This morning (1/1/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we started learning a pasuk which seemed obvious but also didn't indicate any clear context for its application. Despite having a shorter amount of time for shiur, we were able to come up with several fruitful approaches. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll check out what the meforshim have to say. ----- מקורות: משלי טו:יג מצודת ציון תרגום רס"ג The Torah content through the end of Chanukah is sponsored by Feiga W., with the following dedication: "With deep gratitude to my parents, who taught me to seek out opportunities for growth—and to Rabbi Schneeweiss, whose shiurim are exactly that." ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (12/19/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing yesterday's ideas and coming up with some new approaches. We then delved into the Malbim's commentary here and on the mitzvah of tochachah. I don't know about everyone else in the shiur, but I feel like this is the biggest level-up I've had in my understanding of a leitz in a long time. I now want to learn through ALL the pesukim about leitzim using the Malbim's commentary. Perhaps we'll attempt to do that after my break next week. ----- מקורות: משלי טו:יב תרגום רס"ג מלבי"ם - משלי טו:יב מלבי"ם - פירוש הל תורת כהנים (ספר ויקרא) יט:יז (אות מג) ----- This week's Torah content is sponsored by Feiga W., with the following dedication: "With deep gratitude to my parents, who taught me to seek out opportunities for growth—and to Rabbi Schneeweiss, whose shiurim are exactly that." ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (12/18/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning what looked like a VERY obvious pasuk about a familiar Mishleic archetype. Thankfully, the strange litotes (look it up!) in the first half of the pasuk served as a foothold which enabled us to figure out several fruitful approaches. We began learning the meforshim, but we'll continue tomorrow (בג"ה). ----- מקורות: משלי טו:יב תרגום רס"ג מצודת דוד רבינו יונה - שערי תשובה ב:ח רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה ד:ב This week's Torah content is sponsored by Feiga W., with the following dedication: "With deep gratitude to my parents, who taught me to seek out opportunities for growth—and to Rabbi Schneeweiss, whose shiurim are exactly that." ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 1 hour 19 minutes Synopsis: This evening (12/16/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned the sequel to last week's pasuk about arrogance. Instead of warning about BEING haughty, this one warned about associating with the haughty, even (or especially) if profit is involved. Not only did we come up with some nice ideas, but they ended up being almost exactly what our favorite meforshim came up with! Really important ideas, especially for those who are thinking about joining some venture with an arrogant person (and justifying it because of the gains they think they'll make). ----- מקורות: משלי טז:יט מצודת ציון/דוד רבינו יונה מאירי רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ו:א ----- This week's Torah content is sponsored by Feiga W., with the following dedication: "With deep gratitude to my parents, who taught me to seek out opportunities for growth—and to Rabbi Schneeweiss, whose shiurim are exactly that." ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (12/12/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing and refining some of yesterday's approaches. We then learned three approaches from the meforshim: Metzudas David, Rabbeinu Yonah, and R' Sheshes ben Yitzchak Gerondi. It was fascinating how their different takes on the first 1st half determined their understanding of the chidush and the practical takeaway. ----- מקורות: משלי טו:יא רש"י מצודת דוד רבינו יונה ר' ששת בן יצחק גרונדי איוב פרק כח:י-כח ----- This week's Torah content has been generously sponsored by Ann, a dedicated supporter of the Rabbi Schneeweiss Torah Content Fund. Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (12/11/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a strange pasuk which looks like it belongs in Iyov or Tehilim rather than in Mishlei. Length: 1 hour 24 minutes Synopsis: This evening (12/9/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned what is probably one of the most oft-quoted well, oft-paraphrased) pesukim in the world. The main thrust was obvious enough. The trick was to find the chidushim (new insights) - and that's what we did! We came up with several of our own approaches and developed two based on the meforshim, all supported with real-world examples from current events. ----- מקורות: משלי טז:יח תרגום רס"ג מצודת ציון/דוד הואיל משה רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:ג ר' ששת בן יצחק גרונדי ----- This week's Torah content has been generously sponsored by Ann, a dedicated supporter of the Rabbi Schneeweiss Torah Content Fund. Length: 47 minutes Synopsis: This morning (12/5/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we continued learning yesterday's pasuk and encountered a surprising level of difficulty. Metzudas David didn't give us much to work with. Rabbeinu Yonah was clear, but we couldn't discern a clear and "worthy" chidush. Thankfully, we got a nice idea from the Malbim and another one from the Ri Nachmias, with the help of the Rashbatz on the Arbaah Banim. Length: 47 minutes Synopsis: This morning (12/4/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning an unusually difficult-to-translate pasuk. It's not uncommon for us to have multiple translations for a given pasuk, but we had SEVEN different ways to translate the first half of this one, and rumor has it that there are more. Length: 1 hour 29 minutes Synopsis: This evening (12/2/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned the pasuk from which the title of the classic mussar work "Mesilas Yesharim" is derived. Length: 45 minutes Synopsis: This morning (1/7/26), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we moved onto a new topic: shlichus! Length: 47 minutes Synopsis: This morning (11/28/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we set out to clarify and develop the different approaches we came up with yesterday. I THOUGHT we were going to learn the meforshim, but the only one we ended up learning was R' Yitzchak ben Sheshes Gerondi. Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (11/27/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we started learning a pasuk which appears to be connected to the previous one, which also speaks of an "abomination of Hashem," but we decided to approach this on its own. We quickly uncovered several overlapping possibilities and two distinct ways of framing the opposites within the pasuk and the chidushim. Length: 1 hour 16 minutes Synopsis: This evening (11/25/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk that - unlike the last six pesukim - was NOT about kings! At least, not according to us. We attempted to learn this pasuk on our own. We didn't realize that so many of our go-to meforshim didn't provide much help. Length: 1 hour 10 minutes Synopsis: This evening (11/18/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned the last pasuk in the local cluster of pesukim about kings. Once again, I was worried that we would have difficulty seeing past the cliche surface level - and once again, we did! Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (11/14/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we turned to the meforshim. We encountered some nice ideas, but also found that their approaches overlapped to the extent that it was difficult to tell where one distinct idea ended and another one began. Length: 1 hour 28 minutes Synopsis: This evening (11/11/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned another pasuk about kings. Length: 47 minutes Synopsis: This morning (11/7/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed and refined yesterday's approaches, which translated יזרו as "spread" or "scatter." Today we focused on two other translations: "winnow" and "crown." Not only did we come up with some nice ideas, but we unwittingly stumbled upon a Grand Theory of how Mishlei uses terms for speech (e.g. lips, mouth, tongue, etc.). I'm happy with the ideas we learned from this pasuk, but even happier about that Grand Theory! ----- מקורות: משלי טו:ז רש"י ר"י אבן כספי - פירוש ב פירוש רס"ג מצודת ציון/דוד רבינו יונה מאירי מלבי"ם ----- This week’s Torah content has been sponsored by Yael Weiss. Length: 46 minutes Synopsis: This morning (11/6/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a "classic" sounding Mishlei pasuk about chachamim, ksilim, speech, and knowledge. Length: 1 hour 20 minutes Synopsis: This evening (11/4/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned another pasuk about kings. I was a little worried because so many of our go-to meforshim had such little to say, but we ended up developing some nice approaches on our own and we learned a few from the meforshim. Length: 1 hour 39 minutes Synopsis: This evening (1/5/26), in our first Monday Night Mishlei shiur of 2026, we learned a pasuk that was simultaneously easy, fun, and chock-full of ideas. It was in this pasuk many years ago that I discovered an important principle of Mishlei methodology, one that dictated the entire shape of the shiur. But the real benefit of this pasuk is its practicality, which is rooted in a highly memorable mashal. ----- מקורות: משלי יז:יב מצודת ציון/דוד הואיל משה ר' משה קמחי תרגום כתובים פירוש רס"ג מלבי"ם עמנואל הרומי רבינו יונה -----

Mishlei 15:4 - How Speech Can Vitalize or Break a Spirit (Part 2)
Length: 48 minutes Synopsis: This morning (9/26/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing and refining what we came up with yesterday. Length: 1 hour 33 minutes Synopsis: This evening (9/9/24), in our first Monday Night Mishlei shiur of the 2024-2025 season, we took up a Mishlei pasuk about how to make peace with our enemies. The overarching questions are "What are the parameters of this pasuk?" or, to put it more bluntly, "Under what circumstances is this true?" We ended up with some nice insights into decision-making and some useful strategies for navigating potentially contentious relationships in life. We even learned a nice "derech nistar" (esoteric) idea about how to govern our inner lives!

Length: 47 minutes Synopsis: This morning (9/5/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed what we did yesterday and developed a unified approach based on Metzudas David and Aristotle. We emerged with a VERY practical idea for how to respond when someone is angry at you, regardless of why or whether that anger is justified. We also discussed some nice Mishlei methodology along the way. ----- מקורות: משלי טו:א מצודת דוד משלי א:ג-ד; כה:יא אבן עזרא פירוש שני - שמות כ:א אבן עזרא - הקדמה למגילת איכה Aristotle - Rhetoric 2:2 ----- The Torah content for the first month of the new school year has been sponsored by the Brevique BrewLid. Length: 29 minutes Synopsis: This morning (9/4/24), in our first morning Mishlei shiur of the 2024-2025 season, we began the 15th chapter. In this first truncated learnings session (on account of Rosh Chodesh davening) we raised a ton of questions on our pasuk, which clearly has to do with responding to anger, and we suggested a few initial approaches, along with a ton of Mishlei methodology. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll develop these approaches, and see what some of the meforshim have to say. ----- מקורות: משלי טו:א מצודת ציון תרגום רס"ג תרגום כתובים בראשית פרק ג ----- The Torah content for the first month of the new school year has been sponsored by the Brevique BrewLid. Length: 1 hour 34 minutes Synopsis: This evening (8/5/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur before a month-long hiatus, we took up a Mishlei pasuk on what didn't sound like a Mishleic topic: kaparas avon (atoning for iniquity). In fact, there's only one other pasuk in Sefer Mishlei that even mentions "avon." We came up with several of our own approaches, then learned through the commentaries of Metzudas David and Meiri, with lots of help from the Rambam along the way! ----- מקורות: משלי טז:ו מצודת דוד מאירי רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה: הקדמה, ב:א, ד:א ----- The Torah Content for the first two weeks of August has been sponsored by Avital, "in gratitude for all the incredible brachah in my life right now and Mishlei and Stoicism for helping me handle it. Length: 1 hour 19 minutes Synopsis: This evening (7/29/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we analyzed a pasuk that condemned haughtiness in the harshest terms and followed it up with a perplexing statement whose meaning was not readily apparent. Despite our small crew of only 4-5 Mishlei learners, we managed to come up with some nice ideas - by ourselves and with help from the meforshim. So far, Chapter 16 has been delivering a ton of fundamental ideas! ----- מקורות: משלי טז:ה מלבי"ם רב הירש רבינו יונה - שם, ויא:כא מאירי רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות ב:ג ----- The Torah Content for the remainder of July has been sponsored by the Lichters in honor of Jonny Schneeweiss, just "for being Jonny." ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Mishlei 25:12 - Rebuke as Valuable Adornments (Part 1)
Length: 48 minutes Synopsis: This morning (12/24/25), in our Morning Mishlei shiur, we moved on to the next pasuk, which also involves gold and might be a continuation of the previous pasuk. We came up with several really nice approaches on our own. Looking forward to learning the meforshim tomorrow (בג"ה), beginning with Metzudas David. --- מקורות: משלי כה:יב מצודת ציון/דוד תרגום רס"ג עם הערות הרב יוסף קאפח תרגום כתובים תרגום אונקלוס - שמות כח:יח Ruven Peskin פשיטתא בראשית רבה - בראשית מד:יח (צג:ג) --- SPECIAL CHANUKAH DISCOUNT—EXTENDED THROUGH JANUARY 2026: I originally offered 50% off my paid Substack subscription for Chanukah ($5 per month, or $50 for a full year). Since I’m still finishing my Chanukah article, which will be behind the paywall, and since I’ll be heading off the grid for a solo cabin retreat next week, I’ve decided to extend the discount through the end of 2025. If the free articles, recordings, and shiurim I’ve shared this year have added real value to your learning and your life, and you’d consider them worth at least the price of a latte, this is a simple way to say “thank you.” You’re welcome to sign up, read, listen, or download whatever you’d like from behind the paywall, and then cancel so there’s no ongoing charge. Your support is what allows this work to continue at its current depth and consistency, and for that I’m genuinely grateful. --- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 1 hour 20 minutes Synopsis: This evening (7/15/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we - another small summer crew - analyzed an anomalous pasuk about (wait for it) the purpose of the universe (maybe?) and the purpose of the rasha. We developed one totally original approach, then learned the commentaries of the Meiri, Rabbeinu Yonah, Rambam (!), and Rav Hirsch. It was quite interesting to see a philosophical/theodical topic taken up in Mishlei, which imbued the practical applications that emerged with a special gleam. ----- מקורות: משלי טז:ד מאירי רבינו יונה רמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים ג:יג ר' ש"ר הירש ----- The Torah Content for the remainder of July has been sponsored by the Lichters in honor of Jonny Schneeweiss, just "for being Jonny." ----- If you've gained from what you've learned here, please consider contributing to my Patreon at www.patreon.com/rabbischneeweiss. Length: 1 hour 34 minutes Synopsis: This evening (7/8/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we - a small crew this week! - analyzed what appeared to be an extremely fundamental pasuk. Turns out, it was! We ended up learning five solid ideas: three developed by us, one from Rabbeinu Yonah, and another from the Meiri. Every pasuk in Mishlei pertains to decision-making, but this was one of those pesukim which were EXPLICITLY about decision-making as a whole, in addition to being a key pasuk about how to strengthen one's relationship with Hashem. ----- מקורות: משלי טז:ב-ג; כא:ל-לא מצודת ציון/דוד תרגום רס"ג רבינו יונה Epictetus - Enchiridion 1:1 מאירי קהלת יב:יד https://rabbischneeweiss.substack.com/p/my-gemara-rebbis-advice-to-graduates-of ----- The Torah content for the first half of July has been sponsored by Rachayl with “a heartfelt thank you.” Summer is now fully underway! Length: 1 hour 36 minutes Synopsis: This evening (7/1/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we began a new perek! This pasuk seemed intuitive on the surface, but we ended up with a bunch of related yet distinct groundbreaking ideas about everything from self-knowledge to self-confidence to self-improvement and its obstacles. Mishlei certainly has a way of prompting you to take a MUCH closer look at an otherwise well-trodden idea, revealing new depth and layers of application. ----- מקורות: משלי טז:א-ב; כא:ב רבינו יונה - משלי א:כב; טז:ב מצודת ציון/דוד רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תשובה ב:ח ----- The Torah content for the first half of July has been sponsored by Rachayl with “a heartfelt thank you.” Summer is now fully underway!
