#170: The One Thing Menopause Dietitians Want You to Know About Nutrition10 Nov 202500:38:39

We all want to simplify nutrition (and life!) but are we going down the wrong path when it comes to finding "one thing" for nutrition in menopause? Laura Clark RD and I  talk about how real progress in midlife comes from flexibility, self-trust, and simple, satisfying meals. We break down the hype around protein, fiber, and even the microbiome so food feels calmer, kinder, and more doable. In this episode you'll hear:

• why chasing a single fix creates stress not change
• how Laura’s practice shifted from weight-centric targets to nuance
• protein without perfection and what steadies your morning
• fiber and microbiome benefits without counting or 30-plant pressure
• simple plate-building: protein, carbs you enjoy, and some crunch
• escaping on-it off-it thinking and perfectionism loops
• social comparison traps and giving yourself permission
• redefining progress as small choices that stack
• adding fun back into food and midlife

#169: Style, Not Size: Dressing for the Life You’re Living with Jacquelyn Prattipati 02 Nov 202500:33:47

If your closet feels like a battlefield and getting dressed has turned into a daily reminder that your body isn’t the same as it used to be, you’re not alone. In this episode, I’m joined by personal stylist Jacquelyn Prattipati, who helps women in midlife rediscover confidence and comfort through clothes that fit the body (and the life) they have now.

We’re talking about what “feeling put together” really means, why style has nothing to do with size, and how to stop waiting for a smaller body to wear what you love. You’ll walk away with practical tips for finding clothes that fit today’s body, letting go of the “someday jeans,” and remembering that your body isn’t the problem, your clothes just need to catch up.

#160 - Season 5 Finale: The Midlife Glow-Up You Didn’t See Coming30 Jun 202500:20:50

What if menopause wasn’t something to endure, but something to embrace? After asking my Instagram community about the unexpected gifts of midlife, their answers revealed just how liberating this season can be. From deeper friendships and renewed creativity to freedom from dieting and people-pleasing, their stories echoed a powerful shift, and one rooted in self-awareness, strength, and permission to live more authentically.

These insights inspired my new book, Eat to Thrive During Menopause, which blends intuitive eating with symptom-supportive nutrition. No tracking, no rules, just nourishment. Even though this is the Season 5 finale, this episode invites you to see menopause not as an ending, but as a new beginning.

#70- From dieting rock bottom to intuitive eating: 3 common mistakes05 Jun 202300:25:03

While you may be 1000% sure that spending the rest of your life on a diet is NOT the life for you…have you ever found yourself  thinking that the path to becoming an intuitive eater doesn’t feel all that intuitive? If so, welcome! This episode if for you.

The good news is that you are not alone! How do I know? Because of the messages I regularly get from women who are all in what I call the “messy middle” on the road to intuitive eating. Yes, intuitive eating begins with understanding how to stay in tune with your body’s hunger and fullness cues. But it often feels overwhelming  as you learn to navigate all of the other reasons we eat. So in this episode, I'll help you sort through three common speed bumps that can bring your intuitive eating journey to a screeching halt. Come listen and see if these reasons are keeping you stuck too.

But what I’m most excited to share with you in this episode is that for the month of June, you can get one week of 100% free access to my Intuitive Eating Beginner’s Course.

If you’ve started an intuitive eating journey, it is not uncommon to feel the desire to break up with your usual workout routine too. #68 - Got Buff Bones? How to improve your bone fitness & reduce your fracture risk with Rebekah Rotstein22 May 202300:44:22

In honor of Osteoporosis Awareness Month,  I’ve invited movement educator Rebekah Rotstein to shed light on the topic of bone health. It’s incredibly common to avoid thinking about the strength of our bones until later in life, which might be too late if your goal is to be resilient and independent as you age. Rebekah shares the many factors we need to understand about bone health and what screenings we need to ask for starting in perimenopause if we haven’t already.

Rebecca will also share her personal journey of being diagnosed with osteoporosis in her late 20s and how she now helps people across the globe get Buff Bones through fun and accessible education and movement.

#67 - Hot Flashes 101: Can you eat to beat the heat? 15 May 202300:20:24

If you’ve begun your menopause journey, you’ve probably had to deal with hot flashes by now. When they first start, they can certainly take you by surprise, especially since the experience of them can vary a lot from person to person. But however they show up, they are always uncomfortable and disruptive.

In this episode, I’m going to break down what is happening in your body (more specifically in your brain) when hot flashes strike. I’ll also share what foods you might be eating or drinking that can impact how often you have them, as well as simple (and tasty) foods you can eat to support the rollercoaster of hormone changes in this age and stage of life

# 66 - Story Session: How lived experience in menopause changed this dietitian's practice with Tracy Kelly08 May 202300:35:42

When you’re looking for a medical provider in midlife, finding someone who is committed to listening, staying curious, and staying up to date on research are just some of the top priorities. But when you can find a woman who has some skin in the midlife game, well, many times you’ve hit the jackpot.

My guest on today’s Story Session is health coach and dietitian, Tracy Kelly. She’s sharing her story about how her practice has been transformed as a result of having recently started perimenopause. As universal as the symptoms of menopause can be, each of us has a story to tell. This episode will inspire you to lean into your experience, ask more questions, and discover how to live authentically in what likely feels like someone else’s body on a lot of days.

#65- The impact of movement on your bone health in menopause with Niamh Daly01 May 202300:32:25

You probably already know that protecting our bones in midlife and beyond is a top priority. The problem is that like much of the health information we’re exposed to it doesn’t always translate into practical how-to strategies. Instead, it can induce a lot of fear about getting an osteoporosis diagnosis, also known as the “silent disease” since there are so few outward signs and symptoms.

In this episode, I’m joined for a second time by my friend Niamh Daly who will help us understand what is really happening to our bones in post-menopause. She will also help us understand why focusing on movement, balance, and posture are key to slowing bone loss.

You’ll also walk away from this episode with examples of simple low-impact exercises you can do anywhere throughout your day. It’s high time to challenge the idea that movement only happens once a day in concentrated bursts. Your bones will thank you when you do!

#64 - Diet-proof your children with Amelia Sherry24 Apr 202300:33:53

What memories do you have of diet culture as you were growing up? If you’re like many parents in our community, there’s a good chance you’d like to spare your children from these experiences altogether. That’s why I invited Registered Dietitian and author of Diet-Proof Your Daughter, Amelia Sherry to the podcast. We take a deep dive into understanding what’s at the root of our desire for our kids to be healthy and have a healthy relationship with food.

Even if you’ve worked hard to keep diet culture out of your house, there are so many ways our kids can still feel pressured to fit into certain body shape expectations. Amelia will share some helpful questions you can ask your kids in order to challenge common examples of diet, food, and health misinformation. We will also talk about ways to help our kids feel welcome to try, enjoy, and have access to all kinds of food (even sugar) so that they learn how their bodies can communicate with them. If you’re curious about raising intuitive eaters, this episode is a perfect place to start!

#63 - Story Session: Jen's story of premature ovarian insufficiency 17 Apr 202300:19:53

While you would probably guess that the average age of women going through menopause is between 51-52, you might not know that approximately 1% of women go through menopause prematurely before age 40. In today’s story session, I am joined by Midlife Feast Community member, Jen, who is sharing her experience of going through Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

It’s easy to imagine how disruptive and confusing it would be to experience symptoms like hot flashes and long gaps between periods at the age of 31. You’ll discover how Jen put the pieces together pre-diagnosis and learned the best ways to support her health post-diagnosis, which included joining The Midlife Feast Community!

#62 - How to 'do less' and 'be more' in midlife with Wendy McCallum10 Apr 202300:36:02

Midlife can be one of the most overwhelming seasons of life. It honestly feels like everything you are responsible for is a non-negotiable. But if you’re feeling like everything in your mind and body is pointing towards burnout, then something has to give- how do choose what to say no to?

In this episode, I’ve invited my friend and Burnout and Alcohol Coach Wendy McCallum back on the show to walk us through how to start making these kinds of tough decisions in midlife. What I love about Wendy is that her advice is so practical and empowers you to take action on what you want most starting today, not tomorrow.

So if you’re searching for ways to show up more intentionally for yourself and everyone around you, do whatever you have to do to let a ball drop for the next thirty minutes and tune into this episode. I know that the nuggets of wisdom you gain from Wendy will be time well spent and the best investment you’ll make in yourself in a long time.

#61- Feasting with gentle nutrition in midlife with Rachael Hartley, RD03 Apr 202300:28:53

If you’re burnt out on dieting, you’re probably interested in exploring a concept we talk about a lot around here: gentle nutrition. While most people are eager to get to the “good part” when learning to eat intuitively, gentle nutrition is one of the last steps of the journey of intuitive eating. Why? Because we have to un-do a lot of the default programming leftover from years of dieting and diet culture.

In this episode, I’ve invited fellow non-diet dietitian Rachael Hartley on the show to take a deep dive into understanding gentle nutrition- including who it’s for, how to apply it, and the most common hiccups that people experience along the way. Join us if you’re ready to examine your relationship with food!

In this story session, April MacKinnon, founder of Anointment Natural Skin Care, opens up about nearly a decade of navigating perimenopause. From the early waves of anxiety and disrupted sleep to the surprising strength she found through resistance training, she shares her very relatable experience.

We explore how resistance training helped April through anxiety when running no longer worked, how skincare evolved from function to connection, and why saying “no, thank you” with no explanation might be one of the best midlife skills of all.

This honest conversation is a reminder that growing into ourselves doesn’t always mean doing more. It often means redefining what matters most.

#60 - Beating the brain fog of menopause27 Mar 202300:27:02

While you may have expected many of the physical symptoms of menopause, the one that might really take you by surprise is brain fog. If you find daily tasks a real slog, you’re struggling to focus, or just forgetful in ways you would have never dreamed possible-know that this is a very common midlife experience. But what is really going on and is there anything we can do to better support our brains in this season?

In this episode, I’ll share how hormones are the culprits (yet again) and the good news that brain fog won’t last forever! While what you eat won’t make the brain fog totally disappear, there are several things that you can do to support your brain, which I’ll share too. I’ll also let you in on one of the sneaky reasons that brain fog intensifies-and it’s one I bet you haven’t considered!

#59 - Menopause, movement and body image with Dr. Maria Luque20 Mar 202300:32:05

When it comes to movement and exercise, how do you define what “counts”? Are you tempted to think that exercise has to be miserable if it’s going to have an impact? If so, you’re definitely not alone, and today’s conversation is just for you.

Join me and my return guest, Dr. Maria Luque, as we take a deep dive into understanding the reasons we have come to believe that the only legitimate forms of exercise must feel like pure torture.

We’ll also discuss why most people mistakenly make body change their motivation for working out, and how staying stuck in that mindset may be hurting your efforts to work on your body image. If that sounds familiar, it’s time to refocus your energy and your efforts. Then you can start making sure that having fun is your number requirement for getting - and staying active.

Please note there were some volume challenges due to unstable wifi during recording, but this conversation was full of so many important takeaways, I couldn't keep it from you!

#58 -Rest to Reset: Redefining rest and self-care with Suzy Reading13 Mar 202300:29:29

Rise and grind. No pain, no gain. You snooze, you lose. The overuse of phrases like these is why we’re so damn tired. Rest is not a reward for productivity. It’s a need, and it’s critical for us to function.

While rest is 100 % necessary, discovering what rest means to us personally can be challenging. #56: 8 things I wish I'd known about perimenopause before my last period27 Feb 202300:30:15

As many of you already know since I shared it on Instagram, I  recently celebrated my 1-year menoversary. It’s officially been one year since my last period, which also means I’m now in post-menopause. Having taken the time to journal and track this journey, I was able to compile a lot of information and compile a list of 8 things I wish someone had shared with me before perimenopause started.

Being part of the “lucky” 20% of women who start perimenopause before 40, I wanted to let you in on what you should look for things you can do to support your body, and even the surprising things you can look forward to!

I hope this will really fill in any gaps or unanswered questions about this stage of life that you might still have. If you were one of the many women who reached out in response to sharing my story, thank you so much for your encouragement, your questions, and for sharing your own stories. Let’s keep the conversation going!

# 55: Raising the red flag about eating disorders in midlife with Val Schonberg RD20 Feb 202300:37:25

Midlife is often when the toll of a decade (or more) of time spent trying to lose weight through dieting sets in. And what follows is a new sense of panic, driven by the idea that if you haven’t been able to get comfortable in your own skin by now, time is running out. And as new research suggests, it’s this body dissatisfaction that puts many women at risk of developing eating disorders later in life.

In this episode, I’ve invited Val Schonberg, RD to expose the roots of eating disorders in midlife and why so few people, including the medical community, are noticing how widespread this struggle is for women in perimenopause and menopause. Join us as we talk about why it’s so easy to hide an eating disorder, how we can unintentionally encourage them, and how to identify more of what we can control without compromising our health.

#51 - How to get diet culture out of your house with Jenn Messina RD16 Jan 202300:32:11

When you know better, you do better. And if you're like many of the women in midlife I talk to, your desire to move away from diet culture may be in part motivated by your desire to change things for the next generation...I know mine was.

But getting diet culture out of the house means not only changing our behaviour, but also the language we use to describe food, bodies, and even health in general.

In this episode, dietitian Jenn Messina RD helps us understand why so many of us were programmed into diet culture from a young age, how to go back and repair when you say something you don't mean, and even how to talk to other family members when diet talk is the uninvited guest at the table.

#158 - Why Good Girls Gossip: Reclaiming Female Connection in Midlife with Tova Leigh16 Jun 202500:27:27

Have you ever hesitated to open up with other women because you feared judgment, competition, or being labeled as “too much”? If this hits home, I’ve got good news: you are not the problem.

In this episode, author and comedian Tova Leigh shares stories from her new book Good Girls  Gossip and explains why reclaiming gossip, as deep, truth-sharing connection among women, is revolutionary. We talk about letting go of the “good girl” roles we’ve outgrown and what it means to live more authentically in midlife.

Tova introduces her powerful “and also” mindset, which allows space to be both messy and wise, uncomfortable and growing. It’s a simple shift that invites freedom from perfection and black-and-white thinking.

This is a conversation about real talk, shared wisdom, and the beauty of being witnessed by women who see you as you really are.

#50 - This is not your mother's menopause and other thoughts on midlife.10 Jan 202300:22:36

As I get ready to mark my 1-year meno-versary, I reflect on some of the ways that our generation's experience of menopause is different than that of our mothers and grandmothers, including how we talk about it, how we treat it, and how we're helping women thrive in their second season.

But, I also talk about what we still need to work on (in a big way) and what I think is the biggest "missing ingredient" in midlife.

#44 - What women in perimenopause need to know about iron deficiency with Maryann Jacobsen, RD07 Nov 202200:35:59

Iron deficiency is by far the most common nutrient deficiency among women, but the chances of being low in this VIP mineral increase in perimenopause. And as Maryann Jacobsen RD and I discuss, you don't have to be clinically anemic to feel the effects of low iron. We discuss why ferritin isn't the only measure we need to be paying attention to in our bloodwork, why the reference values for ferritin may be too low and the symptoms that women in midlife should be on the lookout for.

#42 - When melatonin and sleep hygiene aren't enough to help you sleep through the night in perimenopause with Sarah Wilde14 Oct 202200:30:39

Most women notice changes in sleep as they transition through perimenopause, and many go to great lengths to be able to fall asleep, and stay asleep, more easily.

In this episode, Sarah Wilde introduces us to CBTi, and how this novel approach to helping us get more sleep is worth exploring. Sarah helps women sleep better so that they wake up feeling rested and ready to take on their day.

Sarah suffered from insomnia for years after her second child was born, until she discovered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (or CBTi), which transformed her sleep at night.

Fast forward through a career change from attorney to Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist, Sarah now helps peri- and post-menopausal women to get better quality sleep using natural and proven CBTi. You can learn more about Sarah on her website or follow her on Instagram @beyond_insomnia.

#157 - Finding Your Movement Rhythm with ADHD and Perimenopause with Christine Chessman09 Jun 202500:38:16

In this episode, I sat down to chat with our very own Joyful Movement Coordinator in the Midlife Feast. At 49, Christine received an ADHD diagnosis after years of masking. She shares how perimenopause brought long-overlooked symptoms into focus.

We unpack how midlife hormonal shifts can amplify ADHD traits and why rigid fitness plans rarely work for neurodivergent brains. As a movement coach, Christine offers a refreshing approach to movement in trading consistency for persistence, flexibility, and self-compassion.

We also bust the motivation myth and share simple mindset shifts that make movement feel doable, even on low-energy days.

If traditional routines haven’t worked for you, Christine’s approach might be the reset you’ve been looking for. And if you love what you hear, don’t forget she shares more inside The Midlife Feast community, including videos and tips for all fitness levels.

#40 - Is it stress or is it perimenopause with Dr. Fionnuala Barton10 Oct 202200:33:58

Perimenopause and the symptoms of stress can overlap quite significantly, especially when it comes to mood, sleep and energy. And as Dr. Barton and I talk about in this episode, that overlap puts some women at a disadvantage when seeking care.

Dr Fionnuala is a GP, women’s health doctor, and member of the British Menopause Society. She is passionate about empowering women to optimise their physical and emotional wellness using a proactive, informative, and holistic approach to Perimenopause and menopause. Drawing on both clinical and personal experiences she provides consultations remotely via video or in person in Hertfordshire to integrate evidence-based and personalised HRT regimes in an empathetic and collaborative way.

#39 - What every woman needs to know about cholesterol, heart health and menopause with Dr. Alex Verge, ND03 Oct 202200:36:45

Did you know that globally, cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in women? Research suggests that 1 out of 2 women don't, and this conversation with Dr. Alex Verge ND about cholesterol, heart health, and menopause is full of things women need to know as they go through the menopause transition. We discuss myths about cholesterol, the role of diet vs genetics, and why dietary dogma often gets in the way of making changes that stick.

Dr. Alexandra Verge is a naturopathic doctor who loves talking about heart health. In her 20 years of clinical work, her focus has shifted from general practice to issues more commonly experienced by people as they age; arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, and, in particular, cardiovascular disease. In fact, in recent years, Alex would say that the subject has, well, captured her heart. She especially loves helping people better understand how high blood pressure and cholesterol can affect their current and future cardiovascular risk while developing workable yet effective management strategies.

#35 Fertility after 40 with Dr. Jordan Robertson ND04 Jul 202200:37:49

Today's episode of The Midlife Feast may not be of interest to everyone, but it's an important conversation to have as many women often find themselves trying to conceive after 40.  And the hormonal changes that are happening in perimenopause can make getting pregnant, and staying pregnant, more challenging.

Dr. Jordan Robertson ND is my guest today, and we talk about why fertility declines as we age, what hormones are involved in assessing fertility, why integrative approaches may be better than alternative ones, and why you shouldn't lose hope if you find yourself struggling to conceive.

Dr. Jordan is a Naturopathic Doctor, author, and podcaster who is taking women's health research and making it more accessible for the everyday woman. #34 Story Session - What happens when menopause comes early and ahead of schedule27 Jun 202200:26:42

This week's episode is a story session about Lindsay's experience of going into menopause at 42, and what she'd like others to know about her experience.

While perimenopause is often missed, or misdiagnosed for several years, it's even more likely to be missed for women who go into menopause early before the age of 45.

And for women who stop having periods earlier than expected, it's important to have a hormone-savvy practitioner on their team to help them manage the long-term risks of being without estrogen for longer than expected.

#33 How to ask your doctor for healthcare instead of weight-care with Dr. Maggie Landes MD20 Jun 202200:42:19

Even if you're not on an anti-diet journey, you're going to want to listen to this episode with Dr. Maggie Landes MD. We talk about her cancer diagnosis and how her journey convinced her to break up with the BMI, why most clinical encounters don't require your weight (and how to talk to your doctor about it), and why telling someone to "lose weight" is not only bad medicine but unethical.

Maggie Landes is a board-certified physician, public health nutritionist, and anti-diet wellness expert. Her dual-mission is focused on not just helping women in midlife escape the grips of diet culture and recover from their lifelong turbulent relationship with food, but Maggie, in her Pro2Pro services, supports other health professionals to participate in, and promote, a weight-neutral approach to practice.

She is also the creator and host of “The Eatfluencer Podcast” where she and her guests unpack all the issues related to constructing a healthy, complete, and high-quality life unlimited by the oppression of diet culture.

All of her personal coaching and programs support the Health at Every Size philosophy (HAES®), the framework of Intuitive Eating, and a weight-inclusive, body-neutral approach to health and wellness.

#30 Day 3: Midlife Un-Dieting Miniseries - Why we need to say 'yes' instead of 'no' with food19 May 202200:05:27

Welcome to Day 3 of my Midlife Un-Dieting Miniseries. You've probably heard mindset described in relation to goal setting before, but today's episode isn't about staying focused on your goal, or how to adopt a "winning" mindset.

It's about permission vs. restriction and what happens to our brain when we say YES instead of NO. Understanding why control creates craving may be the "aha" moment you've been looking for to get out of the diet mentality and make peace with food.

#28 Day 1: Midlife Un-Dieting Miniseries - Why weight loss may not be the goal you're after17 May 202200:06:56

Welcome to my 5-day miniseries on Un-Dieting in Midlife. Today is day 1, and in this short episode I'm talking about why making your nutrition goals primarily about weight loss may be keeping you from what you're really looking for.

I talk about why the desire for weight loss keeps us stuck in the diet cycle, and the beliefs that we need to change about diet, weight, and health to get out of the diet mentality (without feeling like we're free-falling!), and into a more sustainable relationship with food. If you can't imagine a world where your decisions about food aren't based on changing your weight, you'll definitely want to tune in.
