Gillingham produced another battling performance, but once again they came away frustrated not to have won the game after a combination of Crewe’s defensive commitment, some poor finishing, and a highly questionable refereeing decision left the game goalless at full-time.

John Coleman’s side once again played with plenty of the commitment and energy that was missing earlier in the season but, once again, that finishing touch eluded the team as the side was unable to take advantage after Crewe went down to 10 men with 15 minutes to go.

They did have the ball in the net, but Bradley Dack was adjudged to have fouled Crewe keeper Filip Marschall, who totally misjudged an aerial ball before Dack swept home.

It meant the Gills had to content themselves with a point after a game that left the fans walking away feeling much better about the team than they had after previous home games this season.

On this week’s post-match instalment of The ME7 Podcast, Owen Stanley unpacks the day’s events alongside fellow Gills fans Tom Jasper and Dave Miller.

What a difference three days makes!

After Gillingham’s 3-0 capitulation at Barrow, a lot of people, including the fans, the manager and the owner, had a lot to say about the team, and what is going wrong, with the finger of blame pointed straight at the players.

It demanded a response and, at the Bescot Stadium on Tuesday night, we got one.

Gillingham showed all the fight, passion and commitment fans want to see from their team, as they battled to earn a 1-1 draw that, on another night (with a more competent official), could easily have been a win.

But the performance, and Robbie McKenzie’s 25-yard rocket, will serve as proof that better things could be ahead for the Gills, and on this week’s episode of The ME7 Podcast, James Hawkins takes the helm to chat about that performance, and the hopes for Saturday, when the team returns to Priestfield to take on Crewe Alexandra.

Could we be set for our first win of the John Coleman era?

In a special episode of The ME7 Podcast, Gillingham FC club owner Brad Galinson and managing director Joe Comper join James Hawkins and Owen Stanley to answer questions from the fans during a difficult time for the club.

With form, confidence and morale – both on the pitch and in the stands – on the floor, it’s clear that the club faces a difficult few months as it looks to get to the summer, where an off-season rebuild can be undertaken to establish a platform from which to bounce back after a disappointing few seasons.

Fans submitted their questions via social media, and James and Owen put them to the two men at the top of the football club, who requested for this podcast to host a live Q&A session in order to communicate directly with the fans about the club’s current predicament, their plans for the future, and to directly address the most pressing questions posed by the fanbase.

The live Q&A session was streamed on Twitter Spaces and, perhaps appropriately, the session lasted for just over 90 minutes. You can listen to the full, unedited replay of the entire session right here.

Thank you to everyone who submitted a question. We were inundated with questions, and we apologise that we weren’t able to ask every single one. But hopefully the biggest, most pressing questions were put to Brad and Joe, and we thank them both for offering to come on the podcast and give their honest responses to the fans’ concerns.

It was a case of another game, another disappointing result at Priestfield as Gillingham fell to another home defeat, this time to promotion-chasing Notts County.

The Gills fielded a changed lineup as John Coleman shuffled the pack a little for the match, with a three-pronged forward line of Elliott Nevitt, JJ Morgan and Asher Agbinone starting the game. And while Morgan came inches away from giving the Gills an early lead, Gillingham’s all-too-familiar problems in the final third were there for all to see once again.

Two first-half goals from County secured the win, and while Joe Gbode headed in the first goal scored by a Gillingham player in 2025 late on, the team couldn’t quite produce an unlikely comeback as their winless streak continued.

Gillingham’s long awayday to Blundell Park looked set to end with an unlikely victory. But instead, a dagger of an equaliser in the last minute of stoppage time ensured that the Gills’ winless run continues.

Grimsby probably had the better of it in the first half, as the Gills once again struggled to give the opposition much to worry about in the final third. But, remarkably, for the second successive game, the opposing side stepped up and gave us a helping hand… well, shin.

With Joe Gbode the only Gills player in the Grimsby box – well marshalled, too – Jack Nolan whipped a low cross into the penalty area. The cross was going nowhere near a yellow Gills shirt, but defender Doug Tharme swung his left leg at it, and didn’t get the connection he wanted as he shanked the ball straight into his own net.

Perhaps buoyed by holding an unlikely lead, Gillingham came out in the second half and gave us a much-improved performance. Sure, the quality still wasn’t there, but the effort certainly was, and as the game headed into stoppage time, it looked like the Gills might finally hold on for the win.

But, in a suicidal final seven minutes of stoppage time, the team sat back, invited pressure, and got punished with a Danny Rose goal with mere seconds of stoppage time remaining.

It means the team’s winless streak now stands at seven, a run that stretches back to the team’s 1-0 away win at MK Dons on December 14.

Gillingham ended their run of defeats with a come-from-behind 1-1 draw on the road at Tranmere Rovers, but that sentence might lead you to think that the team mounted a stirring comeback.

The truth: They didn’t.

The Gills were hugely frustrating and disappointing as once again they showed a lack of fight and character as they fell behind to a soft Tranmere goal. Then, when the equaliser came, it arrived via an own goal, though new Gills’ signing Jimmy-Jay Morgan might have finished the job had the Rovers’ defender not got there first.

The 1-1 draw may have ended Gillingham’s run of four consecutive losses, but it still felt more like a loss than a win, with the stark reality of our current limitations now there for new boss John Coleman to see after two games in charge.

James Hawkins takes charge of the podcast as he’s joined by a selection of fellow Gills fans to unpack the latest result in what’s turning out to be a damp squib of a season.

It was a case of new boss, same old problems as Gillingham once again showed their failings in a frustrating 1-0 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers in John Coleman’s first game as Gills manager.

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so a complete transformation in his first game was unlikely, to say the least, but after a really positive half-hour, there was an air of optimism in the stands, though the team’s early pressure didn’t result in a goal.

A timely “injury” to the Doncaster keeper bought the visitors time to regroup, and Gillingham never really recovered their early momentum. Then, to make matters worse, a careless header from Armani Little sent Luke Molyneux through one-on-one to chip over Glenn Morris for the only goal of the game.

Gillingham had plenty of time to come back, but never really looked likely, or capable, of scoring as the game petered out into a frustrating 1-0 defeat, and yet another example of the team’s inability to bounce back when they go behind in a game.

It all means there’s plenty to work on for Coleman and his assistant Jimmy Bell, and on the post-match edition of The ME7 Podcast, Tom Jasper discusses the way forward for the new boss, with the help of a selection of fellow Gills fans.

Gillingham’s 3-0 home defeat to Bromley proved to be the last straw, as Gillingham parted company with manager Mark Bonner after eight months in charge. And with the fans still processing the news of Bonner’s departure, the club swiftly followed up the official statement with another later that evening, as they confirmed the appointment of former Accrington Stanley and Rochdale manager John Coleman as the club’s new manager.

The big question now is whether the new man in charge can transform an underperforming squad into a cohesive, competitive, attacking unit capable of winning football matches. That’ll be Coleman’s primary aim as he looks to maximise the potential in the squad and push the team back towards the sharp end of the League 2 table.

Coleman has arrived at Priestfield, and plans to put his stamp on the side as quickly as possible. He’s already given his first interview as Gills boss, and is well known to a couple of the current Gills squad, most notably former Accrington winger Jack Nolan.

After a busy 24 hours at Priestfield, James Hawkins takes the helm for a special Monday night edition of The ME7 Podcast, as he and a panel of fellow Gills fans assesses the change of management, and share their views on the new man in charge, and how he might impact things on the pitch moving forward.

It was a nightmare after Christmas for Gills fans as Gillingham produced yet another terrible display – this time under the lights at Priestfield – as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat to Bromley.

Manager Mark Bonner made six changes to the starting XI, then made three half-time changes as he changed the permutations in a bid to avoid the obvious – that this Gillingham squad simply doesn’t have the wit, the will or the wherewithal to compete at the required level in League 2.

Chants of “You’re not fit to wear the shirt” rained down from The Rainham End as the team capitulated in the first half, while the halftime and final whistles were greeted with loud boos from all of the home stands. After the third goal went in, around a quarter of the home fanbase got up and left, as a significant portion of the home support let their feet do the talking by walking out mid-game.

Those that remained were left dumbstruck by the rest of the Gillingham performance. Despite Bromley sitting back and inviting the Gills to try to break them down, the home side just weren’t good enough to do it. Only a penalty would give the team a clear shot at goal, and when that arrived, Elliott Nevitt haplessly blazed his spot-kick over the crossbar.

It was a disappointingly appropriate way to end another awful Gillingham performance, and on this post-match episode of The ME7 Podcast, Owen Stanley is joined by a host of Gills fans to share their take on a performance that feels like the end of the road not just for the team’s hopes of achieving any sort of positive finish to the season, but also for the manager Mark Bonner, who faced calls to resign as he left the pitch at the end of the game.

So, what happens next? That’s the question that will be filling the minds of owners Brad and Shannon Galinson, and MD Joe Comper.

After a run of poor form through the festive period (and before), Gillingham fans were hoping that the team could finish 2024 with a bang. Sadly, what we got was a mere whimper.

After an encouraging opening five minutes, Gillingham reverted to type once again as they delivered yet another toothless performance of poor football to lose 1-0 at AFC Wimbledon.

The fact that the goal should have been chalked off for handball, plus the clear penalty we should have received in the opening 10 minutes of the game, only served to increase the frustration, but ultimately the team failed, once again, to turn in a performance worthy of the Gills fans, who continue to travel in numbers to support the team, despite their displays.

For the final episode of 2024, the pod looks back at the latest disappointing result, and assesses what changes need to be made as the club looks to turn 2025 into a more successful year.

The Gills’ final game before Christmas produced an entertaining spectacle under the lights at Priestfield as Mark Bonner’s side gave the home fans plenty of positives to take into the next few days. The only shame was the fact that a win wasn’t one of them.

Jayden Clarke poached the opener for the Gills after Elliott Nevitt’s long-range shot was only parried by the Robins’ keeper, but a superb free kick from Luke Young and a nightmarish piece of defending from our back line meant the Gills were chasing the game.

A superb sweeping move down the right involving Remeao Hutton and Nevitt set up a late-arriving George Lapslie to fire home the equaliser, but despite pushing for the winner, it just wouldn’t quite go in for the Gills. Even Bradley Dack’s instinctive effort came back off the bar and, instead of landing at the feet of a Gills attacker, dropped into the grateful arms of the Cheltenham keeper.

It meant we had to content ourselves with a point from a game we really should have won. But the nature of the performance, and the various signs that things might be getting better, meant that there was more optimism among the fans leaving the ground than we’ve seen in past weeks.

What a difference a couple of wins make! After doom and gloom descended on Gillingham FC and its fanbase during a depressing couple of months, Mark Bonner’s side looks to have turned a corner.

It wasn’t pretty, but boy was it needed. On a wet, windy afternoon at Priestfield, Gillingham’s players were expected to roll up their sleeves and battle against a niggly Salford side.

And, in a gritty performance that played out in front of a lower-than-usual crowd – partly due to the weather, partly due to their recent performances – the Gills delivered the sort of fight and commitment that the side had desperately lacked in recent weeks.

Jayden Clarke’s second-half strike was the only goal of the game, as Mark Bonner’s man picked up a much-needed home win to halt a disappointing run of results.

Another week, another demoralising Gillingham defeat as Mark Bonner’s side fell to their fourth consecutive defeat after throwing away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 at Bradford City.

The game was notable firstly for Mark Bonner’s team selection, with none of the club’s summer signings featuring in his starting lineup. Jack Nolan was dropped to the bench, while Armani Little and Elliott Nevitt were left out of the squad on fitness grounds. It meant that the Gills had to roll up their sleeves and put on a gritty awayday performance against a Bradford side that has one of the division’s top strikers in Andy Cook.

Unfortunately, that performance didn’t materialise and, despite a bright start and a good finish from Jayden Clarke putting the Gills 1-0 up, the team were unable to muster a good enough display to hang on to that lead. Two goalkeeping errors from Jake Turner gifted Bradford both of their goals as they turned the game on its head and sent the Gills back home to Kent with zero points.

After a week that saw the vote to remove former club owner and chairman Paul Scally, Gillingham failed to deliver on the pitch as they threw away a one-goal lead and lost in stoppage time to Accrington Stanley at Priestfield.

The defeat means the Gills remain winless in October and have now lost three in a row, and if comments from manager Mark Bonner are anything to go by, there could be a few changes on the training pitch, and in the starting lineup, in the weeks to come.

It’s been an interesting week for Gillingham Football Club.

On Thursday, the club’s shareholders voted overwhelmingly in favour of the removal of former owner Paul Scally from the club and GFC Holdings, with 311 voting for, opposite 11 against. Scally has already intimated that he will legally challenge the vote, and his removal.

That same day, the club held a fans forum, where owner Brad Galinson read a prepared statement about the situation, stating his frustration at not being able to give more information about it on advice from the club’s lawyers. Then the fans fired an array of questions at both Brad and Shannon Galinson, CEO Joe Comper and manager Mark Bonner, whose responses were a real highlight of the evening.

It was another frustrating afternoon for the Gills, as they fell to a 2-0 away defeat against Crewe Alexandra as they missed the chance to pull clear of the pack at the top of the League 2 table.

The Gills bossed possession, but couldn’t turn it into goals as they left Gresty Road empty handed after a game that left Mark Bonner clearly frustrated with what he’d just witnessed.

That frustration was shared by the Gills fanbase, too, and in the latest post-match pod, James Hawkins takes the helm to unpack a disappointing awayday performance.

It had to come sometime, and Gillingham’s first home defeat in the league came on a wet and miserable Tuesday night at Priestfield as a below-par side were beaten by a very professional performance by visiting Grimsby Town.

Remarkably, and thankfully, Gillingham’s defeat didn’t affect the team’s league position, with results elsewhere going our way to ensure the team stayed at the top of League 2, despite that defeat. On the flipside, it was a chance missed to move four points clear at the top of the table.

It was second versus first at Priestfield as Gillingham played host to Barrow, as new Gills boss Mark Bonner put his new-look Gills side up against the man he replaced, Stephen Clemence.

The former Gills head coach got a warm reception from the Gills fans as he returned to Priestfield, but that hospitality didn’t extent to the pitch, as Bonner’s Gills put on a solid if unspectacular performance to defeat Clemence’s Barrow side 2-0, with goals from Jayden Clarke and Robbie McKenzie securing the three points for the Gills.

After Gillingham’s win Owen Stanley hosted The ME7 Podcast’s regular live audio show on X Spaces, as he, along with a few fellow Gills fans, recapped the day’s events as Gillingham returned to the top of League 2 with 19 points from eight league games played.

Gillingham’s latest road trip took them into the back yard of the League 2 leaders, and Mark Bonner’s men left Meadow Lane with all three points after a performance full of grit, togetherness, and quality.

Against a County side that looked dangerous throughout, the Gills back four held firm, while in attack, the team hit the target with more shots than the hosts. And, crucially, one of those shots ended up in the back of the net, as Elliott Nevitt latched onto a sublime through-ball by Remeao Hutton, rounded the keeper and slotted into the empty net.

It meant the Gills continued their impressive start to the season, with only Barrow’s second goal against Newport keeping the Gills from top spot in League 2 on goals scored.

And, in an interesting twist, it’s Barrow, and former Gills boss Stephen Clemence, who provide the Gills’ next opponents at Priestfield next weekend.

Gillingham are on the road again this weekend, and in Notts County they face arguably their toughest test of the season so far.

The Magpies have made a cracking start to the season, and sit top of League 2 after winning four and drawing two of their first six games. Now second-placed Gills head to Meadow Lane looking to hand County their first defeat of the season and replace them at the top of the table.

Gillingham returned to Priestfield and immediately bounced back to winning ways with a resounding 3-0 win over Tranmere Rovers as they returned to second in League Two.

Gillingham took the lead early in the second half through Armani Little’s first goal of the season, but things looked tricky when Ethan Coleman was dismissed after picking up two yellow cards just after the hour mark.

But, despite having to play the final half hour with 10 men, the Gills came together as a team superbly, and netted twice more through a brace from Jayden Clarke, whose performance was a well-timed riposte to those on social media who had criticised him in recent games.

Owen Stanley takes the helm for the post-match pod, as fans shared their views after another gutsy team display from Mark Bonner’s side.

Gillingham return to Priestfield this weekend for a League Two home game with Tranmere Rovers, and ahead of the game, optimism is starting to build that the Gills could be set to field a stronger forward line, with the likes of Elliott Nevitt, Josh Andrews and, possibly, Bradley Dack available for selection.

It had to happen sometime, and after a drab awayday performance at the Eco-Power Stadium, Gillingham’s unbeaten start to the 2024/25 League Two season came to a close with a 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers.

In a game that saw Gillingham outplayed for long spells, it was only one goal that decided the game, with Billy Sharp’s smart turn and volley proving enough to defeat a Gills side that looked disjointed and lacking in creativity on a bad day at the office for Mark Bonner’s side.

The transfer window is closed, and Gillingham are top of League 2.

It’s been a remarkable start to the season for the Gills, despite the fact they’ve had to start the campaign with an injury-hit squad. Now the Gills have some of their key attacking players on their way back, but the challenges aren’t getting any easier.

The Gills make another long trip north this weekend to face fellow fast-starters Doncaster Rovers in a battle between two of the best early-season performers in the division and, ahead of this weekend’s game, The ME7 Podcast’s James Hawkins and Owen Stanley were joined by Alex Pooley to answer questions sent in by fellow Gills fans.

Gillingham had to do it the hard way, but once again Mark Bonner’s men showed grit, determination and togetherness as they battled their way to a hard-earned 1-0 home win against Chesterfield.

The Spireites looked like a side that may well be up there challenging towards the end of the season, but a well-worked set piece gave the Gills the crucial goal as a beautifully delivered Jack Nolan free kick was met with a diving Robbie McKenzie header for the only goal of the game.

Chesterfield hit the bar twice and the post once, while the Gills hit the woodwork themselves in an eventful back-and-forth game that also featured the erratic officiating of referee Charles Breakspear, who booked seven and sent off two – including Gills’ Max Ehmer – in a less-than-stellar performance from the man in the middle.

Ehmer’s suspension will be a concern, as will the apparent hamstring problem that saw Aaron Rowe brought off injured after 20 minutes. But the result will be a huge positive, with the Gills’ victory ensuring they remain at the top of League Two as the first team to hit 10 points in the league this season.

We’re one month into the new season, and the Gills find themselves undefeated in three league games, and sitting pretty at the top of League Two.

It’s a solid start to the campaign, but with 43 more league games still to play, there’s a long way to go before Gills fans can start thinking of the playoffs… or maybe even promotion.

It was the Gills’ second long away trip in the space of seven days, following hot on the heels of our 1-0 away win at Morecambe last weekend, and while we couldn’t claim the three points on this occasion, the point on the road ensured that the Gills finished the weekend at the top of League Two after three games placed.

It might not have been the swashbuckling, counter-attacking goalfest that we saw on the season’s opening day, but Gillingham’s scrappy 1-0 away win at Morecambe is worth exactly the same number of league points, and it might just have shown that, even when hampered by a host of injuries to first-teamers, Gillingham still have the wherewithal to grind out a win on the road.

The worst-kept secret of the new season is finally out, with former Gills star Bradley Dack returning to the club on Thursday. It’s a move that has Gillingham fans excited and optimistic about his potential impact on an already positive start to the League Two season.

There’s no ignoring his injury record, but is his signing a risk worth taking? Gillingham seem to think so, and on this episode of The Fans Social, James and Alex answer fan questions about the team, and discuss the club’s newest signing, as a huge fan favourite returns home to help fire the club back to League One.

What a start!

The Mark Bonner era at Gillingham Football Club got underway with a bang at Priestfield as his new-look Gills site put four past Carlisle United to put themselves joint top of League Two after the opening weekend of the new EFL season.

Timothee Dieng put the Gills ahead just one minute into the game, and the Gills went in at halftime a goal to the good, despite Carlisle getting stronger the longer the first half went on, and even hit the crossbar in the closing moments of the half.

But after the break, the Gills repeated the trick, with another quick goal at the start of the second half. Loan striker Jacob Wakeling latching onto a misplaced pass and racing through to slot coolly into the net for his first league goal in Gills colours.

Carlisle pulled one back, but Gillingham responded brilliantly with two outstanding finishes. Jack Nolan danced down the right touchline before cutting in and slamming an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle to make it 3-1. Then Jonny Williams fired in Gillingham’s fourth from outside the box with a powerful low strike to put the seal on a memorable opening day victory.

After the game, Owen jumped on Twitter Spaces for the first live post-match show of the year, as the fans weighed in with their thoughts on the team’s performance on a superb day in the sun at Priestfield.

It’s been a summer of change at Gillingham Football Club, and the wait for competitive football is finally over.

The Gills will kick off their League Two campaign on Saturday against Carlisle United at Priestfield Stadium, but before the action gets underway, James and Owen are on hand to answer your questions ahead of the opening day of the season.

There’s not long to wait now. The pre-season is coming to a close and on August 10, the Gills will step out onto the Priestfield turf to kick off their 2024/25 League Two campaign.
