Dr. Matthew Mosquera, Addiction Psychiatrist10 Jul 202400:49:01

We dive into a comprehensive discussion on mental health, substance use disorders, and the nuances of psychiatric treatment with Dr. Matthew Mosquera, an addiction psychiatrist and the medical director of Alcohol and Drug inpatient treatment at McLean Hospital in Boston. (He also happens to be Elara's brother.) Our conversation spans a wide range of topics, from the personal journey that led Dr. Mosquera into psychiatry, the distinction between various mental health professionals, to the intricacies of treating substance use disorders and the potential of ketamine in psychiatric treatment.

Dr. Mosquera shares insights into his approach to treating patients, emphasizing the importance of understanding the individual reasons behind substance use and the complex relationship between mental health issues like depression and substance use disorders. He highlights the critical role of language and terminology in treating use disorders, advocating for a shift from the stigmatized term "addiction" to "use disorder" to better capture the clinical nuances and reduce stigma.  We also ask him about Naloxone (Narcan), and if he believes we should all carry it.

The conversation also touches on the challenges and opportunities in the current mental health landscape, including the impact of social media, the importance of resilience and grit, and the evolving understanding and treatment of ADHD. Dr. Mosquera offers practical advice for maintaining mental health, such as the significance of exercise, sleep, and managing what's within one's control.

Throughout the discussion, Dr. Mosquera provides valuable perspectives on the therapeutic relationship, the process of finding the right therapist or psychiatrist, and the importance of being open to change while being mindful of the limitations and potential side effects of medications like stimulants for ADHD.

What Is a Food Story?01 May 202400:50:23

During the holidays, we sat down with eating psychology and nutrition expert Elise Museles. Her transition from a legal career to focusing on food and wellness was driven by her passion for helping people.

Elise's explains "food stories" - how our relationship with food is shaped over time, influenced by our culture, experiences, and personal narratives. All three of us, just like you, have events in our past that likely influence how we've viewed food, historically.

Since Elara was seven months pregnant during this recording, Elise emphasizes the importance of embracing body changes during pregnancy and avoiding societal pressures around weight gain, including the need for self-acceptance and support from loved ones during such a transformative phase of life.

Elise also touched upon the challenges men face in their food stories. Everyone, regardless of gender, has a unique relationship with food. Her anecdotes and client experiences highlighted the universality of these issues.

There are practical ways to improve one's food story, with Elise advocating for awareness, identifying major themes, and understanding the origins of our food behaviors. This can help change narratives and habits in a compassionate and non-restrictive manner.

Elise shares her personal wellness practices, including her morning routine, nature walks, and matcha ritual, which contribute to her holistic well-being. She stresses the importance of proactive stress management and maintaining a healthy relationship with food.

Finally, Elise  shares a significant life lesson taught by her father: the freedom to change one's mind. This advice resonates deeply with our conversation's theme of evolving personal narratives, especially regarding our relationship with food. Elise emphasizes that personal growth involves recognizing that our beliefs and behaviors can change over time, and it's perfectly acceptable to shift our perspectives as we gain new experiences and insights.

We're excited to bring Elise back in a future episodes, to dive deeper into her expertise on matcha.

All About Dogs with Jodi Andersen24 Apr 202400:58:50

In our latest episode of The Matcha Guardians Podcast, we delve into the profound connection between humans and dogs. We're thrilled to have Jodi Andersen, a renowned dog behavior expert, joining us. Jodi's journey into dog training began with a childhood love for animals and a pivotal experience with her own dog, which led her to rethink traditional training methods. She emphasizes understanding a dog's signals and the unintended training we often do. Jodi's approach is about creating harmony between a dog's needs and the family's lifestyle.

Jodi's work extends beyond individual training. She co-founded How I Met My Dog, a platform that matches rescue dogs with adopters based on lifestyle and behavior, not just breed. This approach ensures a deeper, more sustainable bond between the dog and its new family. She also co-founded Competibility, focusing on enhancing the relationship between existing dog owners and their pets.

A significant part of our discussion revolves around the right time and way to introduce a dog into a family. Jodi advises against getting a dog solely for children, emphasizing that the responsibility ultimately falls on the parents. She highlights the importance of matching a dog's temperament with the family's lifestyle and the individual personalities within the household. Jodi also touches on the challenges and rewards of introducing a second dog into the home, stressing the importance of energy compatibility over breed or gender.  Gender, however, can play a significant role.

We also explore the sensitive topic of a dog's end of life. Jodi offers heartfelt advice on recognizing when it's time to say goodbye, advocating for a compassionate approach that prioritizes the dog's quality of life. She encourages openness to the love of another pet, seeing it as a tribute to the one lost.

The Science of Friendship17 Apr 202400:43:02

In our first full podcast, we dive into the science of friendships.  Psychologist Robin Dunbar's 2022 book brought to light the Dunbar number - 150, which represents the maximum number of meaningful relationships a person can effectively manage. This concept really resonated with us and formed the core of our conversation.

We break down the layers of the Dunbar number. The closest circle, 1.5 people, includes an individual and their significant other. Then there's a circle of five close friends, who are those you can always count on for emotional support. The next layer comprises 15 good friends, with whom one might socialize regularly or plan vacations. A broader circle of 50 friends includes acquaintances like party guests or wedding attendees. Finally, the widest circle encompasses 150 people, those whom one would invite for significant life events.

Reflecting on our own friendship, we discussed how we've managed to stay connected despite periods of minimal contact. It's fascinating how shared experiences, values, and similar life stages play such a crucial role in sustaining friendships. We also touched upon the challenges adults face in making and maintaining friendships, especially when dealing with geographical distances or significant life changes like marriage or career shifts.

We also spend on the impact of social media on friendships. How do online interactions fit into Dunbar’s model, considering the often superficial nature of these relationships? We highlight the importance of genuine connection and active engagement beyond just digital interactions.

We also discuss "friendship pruning," where individuals might end or drift away from certain friendships that no longer contribute positively to their lives. Ending friendships can be difficult. We should normalize open conversations about the health of friendships.

Towards the end of our episode, we extended a challenge to you, our listeners. Reach out to someone in your life in a meaningful way, beyond just a quick text or a social media interaction. This challenge underlines the importance of genuine connections and active participation in maintaining friendships.

Ancestral Health and Fitness with Jameson Mohammadi26 Jun 202400:58:22

In our latest episode of the Matcha Guardians podcast, we welcome health specialist Jameson Mohammadi. He brings a unique perspective to health and fitness, drawing on his background in anthropology and health science. He runs Black Wolf Training, focusing on educating people about movement, nutrition, and behavior through the lens of human evolution. We can learn from our ancestors regarding health, and these insights can guide our modern lifestyle choices.

The conversation shifts to the impact of parental behavior on children's physical activity levels. Jameson highlights research showing the significant influence active parents have on their children's likelihood to engage in physical activities. This leads us into a broader discussion on the challenges posed by sedentary lifestyles and strategies to incorporate more physical activity into our daily routines.

Jameson also talks about the concept of the "pain cave," a mental state during intense physical exertion, and offers advice on how to push through this discomfort to achieve fitness goals. Furthermore, he critiques modern footwear for not aligning with natural foot anatomy and advocates for shoes that promote a more natural foot function.

For each person's indvidualized fitness plan, it's important for Jameson to ask questions and learn about all aspects of their life - from activity to sleep and more.   This is why Crossfit, while beneficial to many, can often lead to injuries.   This leads into a discussion about Elara, Diana, and Jameson's favorite and....shall we say overated....exercises.   We cover plank, deadbug, walking, biking, and more.

We wrap up the episode by sharing personal lessons on the importance of community and the power of taking a moment to breathe for overall well-being. Throughout the episode, we cover a wide range of topics related to health, fitness, and the impact of lifestyle choices on our physical and mental health, all grounded in Jameson's expertise and experiences.

The Secret to Communicating with Newborns19 Jun 202400:50:30

This week on The Matcha Guardians podcast, we dive into the world of newborn care with Maria Fernanda Etienne, a seasoned newborn specialist with over two decades of experience. Maria shares her journey from a graphic designer to a newborn specialist, driven by her own challenging experiences as a young mother. Her passion for helping new moms navigate the complexities of early motherhood shines through as she discusses her approach to newborn care, emphasizing the importance of learning from each baby and the mutual growth that occurs between her and the families she assists.

Maria introduces a unique technique to calm crying babies, highlighting the need for parents to stay calm and understand that crying is the baby's way of communicating. She stresses the importance of supporting the baby's head and bottom, keeping them at a distance, and using a soothing shush louder than the baby's cries, reminiscent of the womb's environment. This method, she explains, is effective across all babies she works with, underscoring the individuality of each baby and the tailored care they require.

Self-care for parents, especially in the demanding newborn phase, is another critical topic Maria touches on. She shares personal strategies for managing the physical and emotional toll of newborn care, including taking breaks, nourishing the body with food or sleep, and maintaining a positive mindset. Maria's approach to breastfeeding, whether on demand or scheduled, is flexible, advocating for a middle ground based on the baby's needs and the importance of not labeling babies too quickly based on their behavior or milestones.

Maria's advice extends beyond baby care to nurturing the parental relationship, especially the bond between fathers and their newborns. She suggests skin-to-skin contact and involvement in routines as ways for fathers to connect with their babies, emphasizing the importance of giving partners space to develop their own relationship with the child.

The podcast concludes with Maria sharing a life lesson on the detrimental effects of jealousy in relationships and the power of positivity and possibility in overcoming personal and professional challenges. Her mantra of staying positive, even in the face of adversity, resonates as a guiding principle for both parenting and life.

Meet The Founders of Matcha.com - Dr. Andrew Weil and Andre Fasciola12 Jun 202400:38:56

In this week's episode of the Matcha Guardians, we're thrilled to have a special conversation with the founders of Matcha.com, Dr. Andrew Weil and Andre Fasciola. We delve into their journey of friendship, business, and the world of Matcha. It's a unique episode for us, especially since Dr. Weil is also Diana's dad.

Our guests share their story, starting from their first meeting at an Easter party in 1999. Their shared interests in Japan, good food, and travel sparked a lasting friendship. Over the years, Andre experimented with various business ventures, from T-shirts to healing salves, learning valuable lessons about the importance of execution over mere ideas.

Dr. Weil's early attempts to introduce Matcha to America in the 90s didn't take off due to poor timing. However, his persistence and Andre's belief in the product eventually led to the successful launch of Matcha.com. The timing, combined with a growing American interest in Matcha and Japanese culture, played a crucial role in their success.

We discuss the challenges of introducing Matcha to a predominantly coffee-drinking culture, including emphasizing the importance of making Matcha accessible and appealing to the American palate. Andre and Dr. Weil adapted their approach, understanding that not everyone enjoys Matcha in its traditional form. This adaptability has been key to their success.

Our conversation also touches on the personal aspects of their journey. Both guests highlight the importance of patience, resilience, and staying true to one's vision, despite facing skepticism and failures. They stress the significance of inner guidance and intuition in navigating the path to success.

As we look to the future, Dr. Weil and Andre are excited about the potential of AI in business and the expansion of Matcha.com, including the idea of a cafe concept to make Matcha more accessible. They also share personal insights on maintaining a work-life balance, the importance of morning routines, and staying grounded in the face of success.

Today we dive into the hidden hazards lurking in our households and discuss healthier alternatives. Chemicals are everywhere in our everyday lives, from food and water to clothing and cleaning supplies.  Diana brings up the alarming issue of PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in products like period underwear, which, despite being marketed as non-toxic, are found to contain these harmful chemicals.

We then shift our focus to kitchen hazards, discussing the dangers of Teflon cookware and the benefits of alternatives like cast iron and stainless steel. We also touch on the risks associated with plastic cutting boards and Tupperware, emphasizing the importance of choosing safer materials like wood or glass.

Next, we tackle cleaning products, where we stress the need for unscented, natural options over conventional, chemical-laden ones. We share some of our favorite brands and homemade solutions, like vinegar and essential oils, for a healthier home environment.

We also cover a range of other household items, from air fresheners and laundry detergents to printers and carpets, highlighting the hidden dangers they pose and offering safer alternatives. For instance, we discuss natural air fresheners, the benefits of glass Tupperware, and the importance of avoiding microwaving plastics.

As we wrap up, we share our top tips for reducing exposure to harmful chemicals and microplastics, such as choosing loose leaf tea over plastic tea bags, filtering tap water, and opting for unscented products whenever possible. We also recommend some of our favorite brands for personal care and cleaning products that are safer and more environmentally friendly (below).

It's important to be making healthier choices in our daily lives. While we can't eliminate all hazards, we can certainly make smarter, safer choices.

How Does Alcohol REALLY Affect us?08 May 202400:49:08

Today's guest is Dr. Joseph Mosquera, an integrative medical expert with extensive experience in general practice, who also happens to be Elara's dad. We cover various aspects of alcohol use, including alcohol use disorder, its impact on health, and approaches to moderation.

Dr. Mosquera begins by highlighting the significance of discussing alcohol, especially in the post-pandemic era where alcohol abuse and dependence have become prevalent issues. He emphasizes the importance of using the term "alcohol use disorder" instead of stigmatizing terms like "alcoholism" or "alcoholics."

A key topic discussed was the concept of moderation in alcohol consumption. Dr. Mosquera clarified that mild or social drinking does not significantly increase health risks, barring exceptions like pregnancy. However, people often underestimate their alcohol intake, which can lead to abuse and dependence. This leads to a discussion about what constitutes excessive drinking.

Elara and Dr. Mosquera explore the potential health impacts of regular drinking, like effects on the liver, gastrointestinal system, and mental health. We look at cultural differences in drinking habits, like the "French Paradox" and the practice of drinking wine in Mediterranean cultures. Dr. Mosquera shared personal anecdotes about his upbringing in Spain, illustrating cultural attitudes towards alcohol.

Next, we cover hangovers, their physiological basis, and ways to mitigate them. They discussed practical tips like hydration, anti-inflammatory medications, and specific foods to ease hangover symptoms. Elara shared her college experiences with hangovers and remedies like Pedialyte, highlighting the dangers of binge drinking.

We spend a fair amount of time on the risks of drinking during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Dr. Mosquera firmly advises against alcohol consumption during pregnancy due to the risk of fetal alcohol syndrome. For breastfeeding mothers, moderation was deemed acceptable, but caution is advised, especially regarding binge drinking.

Dr. Mosquera notes an increase in infertility rates linked to alcohol abuse. He emphasized the need for moderation and the potential long-term health risks, including increased cancer risk associated with excessive drinking.

Advice for replacing alcohol with healthier alternatives includes engaging in regular exercise, adopting good sleep patterns, and following a nutritious diet. He stressed the importance of an integrative health approach, tailored to individual lifestyles.

We'd be remiss if we didn't cover sugar intake in alcoholic beverages. Diana and Dr. Mosquera mention the often-overlooked high-caloric content in alcoholic drinks, particularly sugary cocktails and mixed drinks. They pointed out how these additional calories could contribute to health issues like obesity.

Listeners who might be concerned about their drinking habits can journal their consumption and seek help if necessary. Alcohol use disorder is treatable; it's important to recognize its severity and seeking appropriate help, which could range from behavioral therapy to more intensive medical interventions.

Finally, Dr. Mosquera underscores the importance of community and peer support in addressing alcohol use disorders. Listeners should reach out to friends and family members who might be struggling with alcohol dependency.

Why You Keep Waking Up at 3am - And How To Fix It09 Apr 202500:49:16

In this episode of The Matcha Guardians, we dive into sleep—why it’s crucial, what affects it, and how we can improve it. Diana Weil, Elara Hadjipateras, and Jon Gay share their personal experiences with sleep struggles, night wakings, and the impact of lifestyle habits like alcohol, caffeine, and screen time.

Jon shares how cutting alcohol after 5 PM has significantly improved his sleep, but one late-night drink led to a restless night—reinforcing what we know about alcohol’s effect on blood sugar and sleep cycles. Diana explains the science behind this, highlighting how alcohol disrupts blood sugar levels, leading to middle-of-the-night wake-ups. She also notes that caffeine affects people differently based on genetics, with fast metabolizers able to drink coffee at night without issue while slow metabolizers, like Jon and herself, suffer from disrupted sleep.

Elara, as a parent of a young toddler and currently pregnant, shares her reality of fragmented sleep. She’s learned to manage by going to bed early and using audiobooks as a calming ritual before sleep. She recommends The Empyrean Series by Rebecca Yarros as a great bedtime escape- "dragon smut" as she refers to it.

The discussion shifts to sound therapy for sleep. Jon has experimented with frequency tones, while Diana swears by brown noise, which she finds much more soothing than white noise. Elara explains the different types of background noise—pink, brown, white, and green—and how they each serve unique purposes, from drowning out city noise to helping anxious minds relax.

The hosts also discuss sleep training for their babies. Diana initially planned on sleep training but found co-sleeping worked best—until frequent night wakings led her to try a gentle sleep-training method with her husband stepping in for nighttime soothing. This quickly resulted in longer sleep stretches for her baby. Elara, on the other hand, takes a more relaxed approach, still offering a bottle during night wakings and embracing the unpredictability of toddler sleep.

Diana shares her experience with night terrors, which started at age 12 and continued into adulthood. Surprisingly, she found relief when she began supplementing with B12 and omega-3s, hinting at a possible nutritional link. Elara reveals that she used to talk—and even cry—in her sleep, raising interesting questions about the subconscious mind and sleep habits.

Breathing exercises for relaxation also come up. While the 4-7-8 breathing method is well-known for reducing anxiety and aiding sleep, Elara finds that box breathing (equal-length inhales, holds, and exhales) can actually increase stress when done at night. She suggests it’s better suited for daytime stress management.

From a dietitian’s perspective, Diana emphasizes the role of nutrition in sleep quality. She advises against going to bed overly hungry and suggests balanced meals with proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbs to keep blood sugar stable overnight. If mid-night wake-ups are frequent, a small snack like peanut butter with an apple or string cheese with nuts can help.  They key is combining two of the three macronutrients: fat, protein, and carbohydates.

Finally, the conversation turns to caffeine, particularly the benefits of switching from coffee to matcha. Elara breaks down how matcha provides a gentler, longer-lasting energy boost without the crash, thanks to its high L-theanine content. She suggests replacing afternoon coffee with matcha to improve sleep quality. They also highlight the new decaf matcha option from Matcha Kari for those who are caffeine-sensitive.

The episode wraps up with a reflection on society’s bias toward early risers and whether night owls are unfairly judged. The hosts also discuss the pressure of tracking sleep and fitness with technology, debating whether wearable devices actually help or just create unnecessary stress.

Ultimately, the key takeaway is that sleep quality is influenced by a mix of lifestyle choices, diet, stress management, and personal rhythms. While there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, small, intentional habits—like cutting caffeine earlier, using sound therapy, or adjusting diet—can make a meaningful difference in how well we rest.

Skincare Wisdom with Joan Gordon: Routines, Treatments, and Transformations02 Apr 202500:50:18

In this episode of The Matcha Guardians, we dive into the world of skincare with licensed esthetician Joan Gordon. Known for her personalized approach and expertise, Joan shares her journey from art teacher to skincare specialist, emphasizing the transformative power of tailored skincare routines and facials.

She explains how a facial isn’t just about relaxation but a way to rejuvenate the skin, reset habits, and improve overall well-being. Joan provides a comprehensive breakdown of an effective skincare routine: starting with cleansing, followed by toning, exfoliating (as needed), targeting specific concerns with serums, and finishing with moisturizer and sunscreen.

She stresses the importance of consistency, clean skin, and avoiding common mistakes like using body wash on the face or overloading the skin with too many products. She highlights the role of pH-balancing toners and scientifically-backed products from brands like Biologique Recherche and Valmont. We even get our producer Jon to chime in from the men's perspective.

We also discuss the pros and cons of treatments like microneedling, lasers, and dermaplaning. While these can yield transformative results, Joan emphasizes that they should be approached cautiously, especially for those with sensitive or darker skin tones due to the risks of adverse reactions or hyperpigmentation. For beginners or those overwhelmed by skincare, Joan advises starting with three basics: cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.

Joan also delves into the psychological benefits of skincare, noting that facials can uplift mood and encourage self-care. She highlights the importance of quality over quantity in choosing friends and maintaining a stress-free life as these factors significantly impact skin health. To those seeking a trusted esthetician, Joan suggests looking for professionals trained in high-quality skincare lines, emphasizing ongoing education and a personalized approach.

Whether you’re a skincare novice or a seasoned enthusiast, this episode offers actionable advice and insights into nurturing both your skin and spirit.

Effective Parenting Tips from Albiona Rakipi of The Parenting Reframe29 Jan 202501:10:31

In this episode  delve into the intricacies of parenting with Albiona Rakipi, a seasoned parenting coach and host of the Parenting Reframe Podcast. With over two decades of experience in early childhood education and speech-language pathology, Albiona shares her journey and insights into effective parenting, reflecting on both professional expertise and personal experience as a mother.

Albiona begins by discussing her path to becoming a parenting expert, emphasizing the importance of a rear-view perspective—learning from past experiences to navigate current parenting challenges.

A significant portion of the discussion focuses on the concept of discipline, which Albiona reframes as a teaching opportunity rather than a punitive measure. She emphasizes the importance of understanding children's underdeveloped executive functioning skills and using logical and natural consequences to guide behavior. This approach fosters a more supportive and empathetic parenting style, encouraging children to learn and grow through their experiences rather than fear punishment.

The conversation also touches on the challenges of modern parenting, particularly the impact of social media and technology on children's development. Albiona advocates for balanced screen time and stresses the importance of open communication and trust between parents and children. She shares her personal approach to managing her own children's exposure to social media and technology, highlighting the importance of fostering resilience and self-regulation.

Elara and Diana also explore the nuances of co-parenting and maintaining a strong marital relationship amidst the demands of parenting. Albiona advises on the importance of setting aside dedicated time for partners to connect and support each other, acknowledging that this can be particularly challenging during the early, sleep-deprived stages of parenthood. She underscores the value of mutual respect and understanding, suggesting that couples communicate openly about their parenting styles and find common ground.

Another critical aspect discussed is the role of external family members in disciplining children. Albiona stresses the importance of clear communication and setting boundaries with grandparents and other relatives to ensure consistency in parenting approaches. This helps create a stable and predictable environment for children, reducing confusion and promoting healthy development.

The episode concludes with practical tips for managing everyday parenting challenges, such as handling tantrums and ensuring children follow instructions without resorting to punitive measures. Albiona's advice centers on maintaining calm and composed responses, validating children's emotions, and providing clear and consistent guidance.

Overall, this episode of The Matcha Guardians offers a wealth of knowledge and practical advice for parents navigating the complexities of raising children in today's fast-paced and often overwhelming world. Albiona Rakipi's insights remind us of the importance of empathy, patience, and continuous learning in the parenting journey

Are Wellness Trends Worth it or a Waste of Time?22 Jan 202500:52:33

This week, we dive into various trending wellness topics, evaluating whether they are worth pursuing or a waste of time. Our discussion begins with the rising trend of sleep tourism, where hotels are creating environments conducive to rest and rejuvenation. We both agree that this trend is beneficial, especially as quality sleep becomes increasingly recognized for its health benefits. We also explore the concept of postpartum hotels, which are gaining popularity in the US, providing new mothers with round-the-clock care and support, a trend we find promising despite some uncertainties about its affordability and insurance coverage.

Next, we touch on the role of wearable devices in tracking sleep. While some find them helpful, we are skeptical about their impact on mental health due to the potential negative feedback they provide. Moving on to vagus nerve stimulation, we discuss its potential benefits for digestive health through mindfulness practices like humming and breath work. While it has become a buzz term, we acknowledge the underlying value of these practices.

The discussion shifts to blue zone diets, emphasizing the longevity and health benefits observed in certain regions worldwide. We are particularly intrigued by the dietary habits and overall lifestyle of these areas, although we remain cautious about overhyped elements like purple sweet potatoes. We then delve into limpias, a South American spiritual practice involving energy healing. Although some people swear by it, we agree that finding a reputable practitioner is crucial.

Facials are another trend we discuss, highlighting their increasing popularity and potential benefits for skin health. We both enjoy facials and believe in their preventative benefits but caution against the expense and the necessity of routine treatments. In a lighter vein, we share our personal experiences with various facial treatments and agree that some are worth it, while others are not.

We then discuss therapeutic psychedelics, recognizing their growing acceptance for treating mental health issues and enhancing relationships. We support this trend, particularly when used in a controlled, therapeutic setting. Cycle syncing, rucking, and planking are other wellness practices we explore, with mixed opinions on their effectiveness and practicality.

Lastly, we touch on less conventional trends like parasite cleanses, which we strongly advise against due to potential health risks. We also discuss the dubious benefits of adding lemon to coffee and drinking raw potato juice. We agree that these practices are generally a waste of time and potentially harmful.

Throughout our conversation, we emphasize the importance of basic, everyday wellness practices, such as getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and maintaining a balanced diet. We encourage our listeners to prioritize these fundamentals over more extreme or unproven trends.

Tail-Wagging Tranquility: The Healing Touch of Dog Massage15 Jan 202500:47:29

In this episode of the Matcha Guardians podcast, we explore the unique world of dog massage and Reiki with Jill Valuet, the founder of Radiant Paws in Ferndale, Michigan. Jill shares her unexpected journey from graphic design to becoming a certified dog massage therapist and Reiki practitioner, highlighting how these practices can significantly enhance a dog's overall wellness.

Jill explains that dog massage, like human massage, helps alleviate pain, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote healing from injuries and surgeries. However, unlike the deep tissue massages humans often need, dog massage uses gentle, light touches. Jill emphasizes that massage can also serve as preventive care for healthy dogs, helping to maintain their well-being and prevent future health issues.

We delve into the specifics of how Jill became certified in dog massage and Reiki. She describes the extensive hands-on training and home study required, along with her natural affinity for animals and her empathic nature, which dogs respond to positively. Jill's two rescue dogs, Raleigh and Ziggy, both benefit from her expertise, with massage and Reiki playing a crucial role in helping them adjust and thrive.

Reiki, a Japanese technique that translates to "universal energy," is another key component of Jill's practice. It involves channeling the earth's energy through her hands to the dog, which can be done both hands-on and at a distance. Reiki helps to calm anxious dogs, speed up healing, and remind them of their connection to the earth's energy.

Jill shares several heartwarming success stories, including helping a dog with severe arthritis regain mobility and significantly improving the quality of life for a Great Pyrenees who had trouble standing. She also talks about the subtle ways dogs communicate their needs and how she adapts her approach to each individual dog, whether they are high-energy puppies or older dogs with specific health issues.

The discussion also touches on the practical aspects of preparing for a dog massage, such as ensuring the dog has eaten and gone to the bathroom, and the importance of the owner's role in the process. Jill emphasizes that dog massage is beneficial for all dogs, not just those with health problems, and can help with everything from puppy development to managing anxiety and stress.

Jill's passion for her work is evident as she talks about the joy and fulfillment she finds in helping dogs. Her advice for those interested in pursuing a career in dog massage is encouraging, noting that it is a wonderful field for anyone who loves dogs and wants to make a positive impact on their lives.

To conclude, Jill shares her life lessons about following one's dreams and using one's voice, highlighting the importance of self-care and pursuing what truly makes you happy. She also provides practical tips for dog owners to help their pets relax and feel good, such as tapping on the chest to release endorphins and performing gentle skin rolls.

For more information, listeners can find Jill on her website, Radiant Paws, as well as on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, where she shares more insights and tips on dog massage and Reiki.

(Editor's Note:  We discussed Jill working with Jon's dog Jules in this episode.  Jules passed in November, but Jon is grateful for all of Jill's work with her.)

The Truth About Child Food Allergies with Dr. Gary Soffer26 Mar 202500:52:34

In this episode of The Matcha Guardians, we had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Gary Soffer, an integrative pediatrician and allergy expert from Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Soffer’s journey into medicine was anything but typical, starting in the music industry before a personal experience with a sick relative inspired him to pursue a career in healing. Today, he’s a leading voice in integrative medicine, focusing on allergies, eczema, and asthma, and we couldn’t wait to pick his brain about the rising rates of food allergies and how parents can navigate them.

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation was how early allergen introduction has transformed. Dr. Soffer explained how the old guidelines to wait until two years of age have shifted to introducing allergens as early as four to six months. He shared fascinating insights from research, like the discovery that Israeli children, who eat a peanut-based snack called Bamba from a young age, have significantly lower rates of peanut allergies. These findings underscore how early and sustained exposure can actually protect against allergies, dispelling the myth that delaying certain foods is safer.

We also discussed the rise in food allergies and their potential causes, from industrialized diets to over-sanitization. Dr. Soffer emphasized the importance of exposing kids to diverse foods and environments—yes, even dirt and farm animals can benefit their immune systems. For us as parents, it was reassuring to hear that mild reactions are common during early food introduction and that systemic, life-threatening reactions are exceedingly rare in young children.

Another crucial topic was the psychological impact of food allergies. Dr. Soffer cautioned against unnecessary allergy testing without a history of clinical reactions, explaining how false positives can lead to over-restrictive diets, more allergies, and even eating disorders. He shared heartwarming success stories, like a child once diagnosed with eight food allergies who, after reintroduction, now eats freely.

Finally, we explored practical parenting strategies, including introducing fermented foods, encouraging food diversity, and resisting the urge to over-medicalize parenting. Dr. Soffer reminded us to focus on service and finding joy in the little moments, which resonated deeply as moms navigating our own parenting journeys.

This episode left us feeling more informed, empowered, and ready to share these insights with you all. We hope it does the same for you!

Rebecca shares her journey from neuroscience and pharmaceutical sales to nutrition, sparked by her desire to address the root causes of disease through preventive health. She candidly discusses her career pivot, the challenges of starting her practice during the pandemic, and the rewards of virtual consultations that expanded her client base.

A significant portion of the discussion focuses on GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, used for weight loss. Rebecca provides a balanced perspective, emphasizing their effectiveness when combined with lifestyle changes, such as working with a nutritionist and engaging in regular exercise to preserve muscle mass. She cautions against their long-term use due to potential side effects, including thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and digestive issues, and explains the risks of weight regain post-usage without sustained behavioral changes.

Of course, we also discuss postpartum weight management and the myths surrounding pregnancy and breastfeeding. Rebecca debunks the notion that breastfeeding universally leads to weight loss, emphasizing the hormonal shifts and caloric demands that can make weight loss challenging during this period. She also highlights the importance of balanced blood sugar levels, tailored nutrition, and individualized approaches to managing weight during and after pregnancy.

Rebecca advocates for sustainable habits over quick fixes. She critiques the "calories in, calories out" mentality, explaining that metabolic processes and food quality significantly influence weight management. Her advice includes mindful eating, avoiding late-night snacks, and engaging in strength training to maintain muscle mass. She underscores the importance of flexibility in habit formation, recommending preparation and planning, especially for busy parents.

The discussion rounds out with Rebecca's supplement recommendations, including probiotics, vitamin D, magnesium glycinate, and Omega-3s, tailored to support overall health. Our Wild Journeys Through Childbirth and After12 Mar 202501:01:13

In this episode of The Matcha Guardians, Diana Weil and Elara Hadjipateras share intimate and vivid details of their birth stories, offering a raw and honest perspective on childbirth. They reflect on their experiences with humor, vulnerability, and practical insights, highlighting both the beauty and unpredictability of the journey to motherhood.

Elara begins by recounting her scheduled c-section due to her son Koa’s breech position. She recalls the surreal and calm lead-up to the procedure, marked by routine moments like packing her hospital bag and discussing home renovations with her husband, Peter, in the operating room. Despite initial nerves about the epidural, the procedure itself was smooth and quick, lasting just 19 minutes. Her son’s immediate arrival brought immense joy, but her postpartum experience took a sharp turn with a severe and unexpected case of postpartum preeclampsia. This dangerous condition caused her blood pressure to spike, requiring an extended hospital stay, a magnesium drip, and constant monitoring. Elara describes the emotional and physical toll of this ordeal, including her determination to refuse a catheter and her struggle to control her anxiety-induced “white coat syndrome.” She credits her supportive family and nursing team for helping her navigate this challenging time.

Diana’s story is equally compelling but takes a different trajectory. Hoping for an unmedicated birth, she labored at home before rapidly progressing into intense, unrelenting contractions. Arriving at the hospital, her labor advanced quickly, but complications arose when she stalled at seven centimeters dilation. Despite hours of pushing, her son Elio’s position and her developing infection necessitated an urgent c-section. Diana recounts the physical and emotional demands of labor, the eventual relief provided by an epidural, and the bittersweet moment of meeting her son after he needed brief NICU intervention. Reflecting on the process, she shares her mixed emotions about the experience, emphasizing the mental resilience required for childbirth.

Both women underline the unpredictability of labor and the importance of advocating for oneself during medical care. They conclude by celebrating the transformative nature of motherhood, affirming that despite the hurdles, the arrival of their sons made it all worthwhile. In a future episode we will cover breastfeeding and "the fourth trimester" (after birth).

A Candid Talk About Fatherhood With Our Husbands26 Feb 202500:43:51

In this episode of Matcha Guardians, we dive into the raw and unfiltered realities of parenthood with our husbands, Peter and Harley. From the very start, we throw them into the deep end, asking them to describe their experiences as new fathers in just one word. Peter emphasizes the immense responsibility that comes with fatherhood, noting how it has sharpened his focus and ability to manage work-life balance. Harley, on the other hand, highlights the sheer cuteness of his baby, which helps him endure the inevitable diaper changes and late-night duties.

As the conversation progresses, we explore the changes in relationship dynamics post-baby. Both men acknowledge the significant patience required, particularly towards their partners, who are often exhausted and overstimulated from the demands of breastfeeding and caring for a newborn. We discuss the emotional toll that this new phase of life can take, with Elara sharing how her initial anxieties often manifested as anger directed at Peter. Despite these challenges, Peter and Harley maintain that the joys of parenthood far outweigh the difficulties, especially as their babies start to smile and engage more with the world around them.

We also touch on the pressures and expectations around parenting, such as the concept of "good" and "bad" babies and the guilt associated with wanting personal time away from the baby. Harley and Peter discuss how important it is to take care of oneself, both physically and mentally, in order to be the best parent possible. They also share their thoughts on co-sleeping, a practice common in many cultures but often viewed with caution in the West. Both couples have experimented with co-sleeping and found that their babies tend to sleep better when close to them, though it does come with its own set of challenges.

Intimacy after childbirth is another candid topic we explore. Diana and Elara open up about the fears and discomfort associated with resuming sexual activity after a major medical procedure like a C-section. Both couples emphasize the importance of communication and patience as they navigate this new aspect of their relationship.

The episode concludes with some heartfelt reflections from Peter and Harley on the life lessons they've learned the hard way, as well as the mantras they rely on to stay grounded and motivated as new dads. Despite the challenges, they both agree that the experience of fatherhood, with all its ups and downs, is incredibly rewarding.

From Fear to Comfort: Redefining End-of-Life Care with Mike Reagan19 Feb 202500:45:12

In this episode of The Matcha Guardians Podcast, we dive into an intimate conversation with Mike Reagan, an end-of-life doula and CEO of The Natural Funeral. Building on the previous week's discussion with Seth Viddal, this episode explores the often-overlooked role of end-of-life doulas and the compassionate care they provide during the final stages of life.

Mike Reagan begins by debunking the common misconception that end-of-life doulas always know the right things to say. He emphasizes the importance of presence and listening over having a set of prepared responses. Drawing from his extensive experience, he shares that being fully present allows the natural flow of meaningful and comforting words, fostering a peaceful environment for those nearing the end of their lives.

Reagan explains the role of an end-of-life doula as one that complements hospice care by providing additional support to both patients and their families. Unlike hospice teams constrained by limited visit durations, end-of-life doulas offer continuous, holistic care, helping families navigate the emotional and practical aspects of death. This includes everything from planning the vigil to ensuring that the dying person's wishes are respected and honored.

A significant part of the conversation addresses the broader societal discomfort with discussing death. Reagan advocates for normalizing these conversations, suggesting that it can lead to a more fulfilling life and a more peaceful death. He shares moving anecdotes from his experiences, such as a patient named Danny who found comfort and wisdom in his final days and another patient whose fear transformed into peace through compassionate care.

The discussion also touches on the benefits of incorporating rituals and personal preferences into the dying process. Whether it's choosing the room for the final moments or deciding on the presence of certain scents and sounds, these personal touches can make the end-of-life experience deeply meaningful for both the patient and their loved ones.

The conversation naturally extends to the controversial topic of medical aid in dying. Reagan shares his insights and experiences, highlighting the importance of giving terminally ill patients the autonomy to choose their end-of-life path. His advocacy for reducing the waiting period for medical aid in dying prescriptions underscores the need for compassionate policies that respect patients' wishes. This led to the passage of Colorado's Medical Aid in Dying Law, which should not be confused with assisted suicide.

Throughout the episode, Reagan's dedication to serving with love and presence is evident. He emphasizes that the ability to provide comfort and peace at the end of life is available to everyone, not just professionals. By quieting our minds and opening our hearts, we can all offer meaningful support to those nearing the end of their lives.

In conclusion, Mike Reagan's insights shed light on the transformative role of end-of-life doulas and the profound impact of compassionate care. By fostering open conversations about death and embracing the natural process of dying, we can create a more supportive and loving environment for those we love and ourselves.

Transforming Funeral Services: Green Burials and Water Cremation Explained with Seth Viddal12 Feb 202500:53:35

In this week's episode of The Matcha Guardians, we dive into a profound discussion on end-of-life care with Seth Viddal, co-founder of The Natural Funeral in Lafayette, Colorado. Seth shares his personal journey into the funeral service industry, which began through his own experience of losing close family members and the realization that the conventional funeral services did not adequately serve his family's diverse needs. This realization spurred him to create a funeral home that offers personalized and meaningful services that actively involve families in the process.

Seth's approach to funeral service is unique and deeply compassionate, focusing on family empowerment and ecological responsibility. He emphasizes the importance of personal involvement in the care of deceased loved ones, offering options that allow families to be directly involved in the preparation and memorialization of the body. This can include activities such as bathing and dressing the deceased, which can be therapeutic and meaningful for grieving families.

One of the standout offerings of The Natural Funeral is water cremation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis. This environmentally friendly alternative to traditional flame cremation uses a small amount of water and alkaline chemicals to reduce the body to its basic elements. This process consumes less energy and results in a liquid essence that can be returned to the earth as a bio-stimulant, enriching the soil without causing pollution.

Seth also introduces us to the concept of natural organic reduction, also known as terramation or body composting, which is another eco-friendly option offered by The Natural Funeral. In this process, the body is placed in a chrysalis vessel with organic materials like wood chips, straw, and alfalfa, and inoculated with beneficial bacteria and fungi to accelerate decomposition. Over a few months, the body is transformed into nutrient-rich soil, which can be used to nourish plants and return life to the earth.

Throughout the episode, Seth explains the ecological impacts of traditional burial and cremation practices, highlighting the environmental benefits of the alternatives they offer. He also touches on the legal aspects and growing acceptance of these practices across the United States.

Seth's dedication to providing meaningful, eco-conscious end-of-life services is truly inspiring. He and his team at The Natural Funeral are paving the way for a more personalized and environmentally responsible approach to funeral care, resonating with families who seek to honor their loved ones in a way that aligns with their values.

Mastering the Art of the Resume and Job Hunt with Angela Buccellato of The Resume Rescue05 Feb 202500:53:51

In this episode of the Matcha Guardians podcast, we dive into the intricacies of job hunting and resume writing with Angela Buccellato, the CEO of The Resume Rescue. Angela shares her journey into recruiting, highlighting how her experiences with defense and technical recruiting, and her frustration with the traditional job search process, led her to establish her company. Her mission is to help individuals present their authentic selves in their resumes and job searches, aiming to bridge the gap between job seekers and hiring managers.

Angela emphasizes the importance of authenticity in the job search process. She shares her own story of being fired from a toxic job and using that as a catalyst to start her business. This personal anecdote underscores her belief in honesty and resilience, advising job seekers to be open about their career gaps or being let go, as long as they present it in a context that highlights growth and learning.

One of the key takeaways from Angela is the significance of updating resumes regularly. She suggests job seekers should update their resumes quarterly to reflect new skills and experiences. Angela also stresses the value of a well-crafted resume that includes keywords from the job description, making it easier for applicant tracking systems (ATS) to identify suitable candidates. She debunks the myth that ATS is a robot, explaining that it's merely a tool to filter through applications based on keywords.

Angela provides practical advice on tackling resume gaps. For instance, she advises using project-based experiences or volunteer work during gaps to demonstrate ongoing professional development. This approach helps maintain a continuous narrative in a resume, making it more appealing to potential employers.

Regarding LinkedIn, Angela advocates for its strategic use, even for those who might be reluctant to engage on the platform. She explains that LinkedIn is crucial for networking and building professional relationships. By sharing authentic stories and professional achievements, job seekers can enhance their visibility and attractiveness to recruiters. She also advises job seekers to engage with potential employers directly through LinkedIn, as a personalized message can significantly increase the chances of a resume being noticed.

We also touch on the interview process, offering tips on how to prepare effectively. Angela recommends being oneself during interviews and treating them as conversations rather than interrogations. She shares her method of using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) technique to structure responses, making them clear and impactful. She also emphasizes the importance of researching the company and finding common ground with the interviewer to build rapport.

The discussion concludes with a reflection on the current job market. Angela acknowledges that it is challenging for both job seekers and employers. She encourages job seekers to be persistent, leverage their networks, and continuously improve their resumes and interview skills. She also highlights the need for employers to streamline their hiring processes and improve communication to enhance the candidate experience
