This week we decided to switch things up a bit and let you know what it's like when we get together for a good ole bottle share. In this episode, we taste and review some new products from Heaven Hill (Grain to Glass) and also share some blind pours. This is something that we typically do when we aren't recording. Once again, we are joined by our friend and fellow podcaster, Maasak. As always, hilarity ensues as the guys test their palates, tell dad jokes, and discuss a wide variety of topics ranging from bourbon marketing to LeBron James. On episode 157 of The Mash Up, we introduced and reviewed Raconteur Rye which is a blended rye whiskey collaboration brought to us by none other than David Jennings (Rare Bird 101) and the good folks over at the WoodWork Collective. Raconteur Rye Batch # 1 was very well received. It sold out instantly and left people clamoring for more. Well...the wait is almost over. Raconteur Rye Batch # 2 will be released in September! Once again, this rye whiskey starts as an MGP product which is expertly finished in different types of barrels. We loved the first release, but how does batch # 2 compare? We were fortunate enough to take our very first trip down to the Jack Daniel's distillery to pick two barrels of whiskey for the Bluegrass Liquor Box (a local liquor store in Georgetown, Kentucky). Though it was our first time in Lynchburg, we took in all the sights and now have a newfound respect for this juggernaut whiskey producer. Two days before we arrived for our pick, the thirteenth version of the special distillery series released at the gift shop. This release is a Twice Barrelled Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey that started as a 6 1/2 year rye that was then put into a new charred white oak barrel for an additional 2 years. Join us this week as we talk about our experience at the distillery, review this special distillery only release, and have a bunch of fun in the process.

Maker’s Mark Wood Finishing Series started back in 2019 with the release of the RC6 stave finished bourbon. The 2022 release from the series is hitting shelves right now and features Maker’s aged at the top (BRT-01) and bottom (BRT-02) of the rickhouse. On the cusp of this new release, we were feeling nostalgic and turned back the clock to taste the the Maker’s FAE-02 bourbon the from the 2021 Wood Finishing Series release. This bourbon is a result of placing double heat treated french oak staves (infrared/flame) inside of barrels of Maker’s signature bourbon. Laugh along this week as we sip and discuss a recent Hollywood like experience for one of our co-hosts. Even though we try to get a little technical about Maker’s Mark, the giggles take over and the fellas find it hard to stay focused. Perhaps the bourbon is to blame?

This week we welcome @maasakmt back to the podcast to discuss the distillery exclusive Woodford Honey Barrel Finish bourbon. This unique product is the result of a collaboration between a local farmer and the good folks at Woodford. Join the captivating conversation as Anthony apologizes to the state of Texas and Steven contemplates how different grades of honey might impact the flavor of honey finished bourbon. Arrgh! Ahoy, Matey! This week we take to the seas and uncork a bottle of Jefferson’s Ocean Aged At Sea Wheated Bourbon. This bourbon is typically aged on land for 6-8 years and the loaded onto a research ship where it ages for an additional 5-10 months. Uncommon as it was when Jefferson’s first started doing this, aging whiskey on the water is quickly becoming something that more distillers are considering. What do we think about this sea breezy bourbon? You’ll have to listen this week to find out. Also, as an added bonus you’ll get to hear Anthony botch more geography and talk about his struggle to taste whiskey post covid. Land ho!
