My guest this week is Diane Simard, a powerhouse survivor and advocate!!

When she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was looking for a therapist to help her cope with such a traumatizing diagnosis. She made the disturbing discovery that mental health and cancer did not intersect cohesively in the cancer treatment process.

Today's solo episode is something that has been on my heart almost since I was diagnosed. I love people who are supportive and there for their loved ones. 

When I was first diagnosed, I didn't tell anyone outside my immediate family and a few close friends. I didn't want a lot of unsolicited advice. I was overwhelmed by the solicited advice I was getting from my medical team. I know people mean well and naturally want to "fix" things and make them better. That's usually not possible when faced with a cancer diagnosis.

On the other side, people come to me asking for advice on what they should do, which treatments they should have, etc. That's another slippery slope. What do you tell someone asking for this kind of advice? 

We break it all down in this episode. How to handle those situations, no matter which end you are on. Granted, it's only my opinion, and I'm continuing to learn. These are some tips that have worked for me.

While cancer is not inherently something to be grateful for, the practice of gratitude has been clinically shown to improve mood, health, and well-being. 

So many amazing ideas, new products, and non-profit organizations have come about because someone had cancer and created something for others out of that. Advocacy, kindness, empathy and compassion all can be blessings from cancer.

Today's guests are Andrew and Whitney Martin. Their daughter, Rowen, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 3. Their lives became all about her. Divvying up caregiving and still trying to live a normal life and raising a toddler as well. 

They quickly learned their strengths and became a team. Andrew was in charge of the at home chemo and treatments and Whitney was the "boots on the ground" at the hospital and with the medical team. 

When Rowen's cancer journey was over, Whitney and Andrew had to get to know each other again. They weren't the same people they were before. They made the choice to appreciate one another for who they have become.

Today's guest is Demetrius Holiday, pediatric nurse practitioner, clinical assistant professor at Georgia State University, and she serves on the Patient Family Advisory Council for Emory Healthcare. She also volunteers as an Ambassador and Mentor for Imerman Angels, mentors youth through Black Girls Smile, Inc., and is owner and CEO of DDH Health Education Consultants, LLC, providing health education to medical providers, patients and caregivers. 

Demetrius is also a head and neck cancer survivor and her story is one of determination and fighting every step of the way to get the care she needed. She has since used her own experience to become a better listener with her own patients and an advocate and mentor.

Today's guest is Fiona Macrae, first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and metastatic breast cancer in 2020. She is continuing to thrive over 5 years later with regular treatments. 

During her initial treatment, Fiona struggled to find travel insurance due to her diagnosis. She launched Insurancewith in 2011, an insurance brand with the aim of providing everyone with a medical condition with a fair and affordable travel insurance policy to cover their upcoming vacations. Insurancewith also supports charities that support their customers, donating over 250,000 pounds to charity over the years.

Today's guest is Dale Atkinson, UK entrepreneur and stage IV esophageal cancer patient who refused to accept a palliative only health plan. Diagnosed on his son's first birthday, Dale dove into research and built his own evidence-based integrative strategy, combining standard treatment with complementary therapies and targeted off-label medications. His tumor and metastases have disappeared, leaving only a small amount of residual metabolic activity. 

Dale uses his journey to advocate for better patient education, earlier diagnosis, and access to integrative oncology.

He's done it all, from school marching bands to Air Force Drum and Bugle Corps, to drumming in a rock band, to teaching music to high schoolers.
