Episode 98 consists of pieces of six tracks, opening up with a slyly psych cumbia track and closing out with an outer space ambient maybe improvised electronic. And in between the space sandwich is some British hip hop (love/hate!), a tune from Santrofi which blends Ghanaian highlife with funk and other influences, a rock track with an interesting arrangement and some old school Cuban music.

There are many awful things about the open American #fascism now culminating in the chaotic reign of President Orange Ballbag. Make no mistake this bullshit has been slowly growing for decades now. In the first 4-5 weeks of 2025 I have found 4 albums certified banging accoring to the Magic Organ banging system, and we kickoff the episode today with a track from one of them. It is a collaboration between a Peruvian artist and an African guitarist and it's upbeat and joyous and it slaps.

During the second track I might have used the word 'crock' instead of rawk. I meant rawk as in rock music. Otherwise it's more of the 13 minute new music podcast for your earholes.

The internet's most fiery 13 minute new music podcast returns with our first sure to make the best of year list, Vaodou Game's new record FINTOU. Their previous efforts are over the top funky and partyistic, pumped beyond belief but this one has slowed down the tempo, added some accordion and guest singers and I think it's a certified bag of bangers as there's more depth to what they're doing here. Plenty of funk is still on offer after these changes, check it out.

Not to say that the other tracks on this aren't bangers -- more African music, some crushing metal from Ice T's Body Count and a lyrical and strange performance from Cameron Winter.

As usual The Magic Organ is about the quality not the genre, creativity over lifestyle every time.

I spend most of January sifting through best of the year before music lists -- Pitchfork, bandcamp, other lifestyle outlets. The NY Times, no I don't take their music criticism seriously at all, blech. I am looking for records that I may have missed and there aren't many, just going up and down the Pitchfork top 50 I had listened to 30+ of the records they recommend.

I think the most interesting track on this episode is the track from Still House Plants. It works as rock due to its reluctance to rock, they barely remain in the genre they are slotted into. Their formula works because they have a great drummer and they seem to be listening to each other as they play something more akin to jazz than rock.

Anyway, it's 2025, enjoy this January foraging session, if you have any great records don't hoard them, let me know.

If you were to define the greatness of a music writer/podcaster as how closely their recommended picks line up with other music writers/podcasters, then I would most definitely be a shit ass music critic.

If one were to have half a brain and define the greatness of a music writer/podcaster as working across as many genres as there are and the independence to pick music based on its quality and not on its marketability, well then I would be up there if not at the top of the pile.

Happy 2025! There will be one more best of 2024 episode and I will spend most of January 2025 scrounging the best of lists that I think could contain some diamonds sprinkled in with the manure. Bandcamp has some very good best of year lists, not perfect but very good, the NY Times sucks at music writing, I'll keep it at that.

Here we are just before the holidays and the digital town square is flooded with best of lists for music, films and books. Some of my choices occasionally pop up on a list but there are many that are unique to The Magic Organ.

The Magic Organ is a music loving podcast, it is not a music pimping/PR podcast. Going against the grain, focusing on the actual music and not giving a flying fuq about brat summer and whatever other stupid identity nonsense is sprinkled all over listeners to make corporate music appear meaningful.

Randy Mason's hip hop record is a perfect example of an overlooked gem and I continue to maintain that anyone claiming to be a music lover without listening to all the incredible music coming out of Africa isn't really a music lover. Finally, if you dig the rock check out the Meridian Brothers wacko Latin-Captain Beefheart business.

I can't stand the holidays but this is my absolute favorite time of the year in terms of listening to music and finding new music to listen to during the dark days of winter. Year end lists, checking out how garbage-y the New York Times best of year list is, and then finding awesome heavy metal records in the comment sections of other year end lists. Good times for music obsessives.

This here episode is the last episode before I rain down upon the masses my best of year list in podcast episode form. Best of the year music lists will start popping out a little before Thanksgiving and they will continue to trickle out into the first week or so of December and then a few stragglers towards New Years.

It's looking like 4 best of '24 podcasts for The Magic Organ and maybe an honorable mention if I can squeeze one out. Those shits take time (I've already begun downloading and contemplating my choices), so there will be one or two more non best of '24 episodes before that. Hence the beginning of the end.

Best of year lists are the best time of the year to be a music fan, at least one like me where I listen to the choices on a lot of these lists. If I had two suggestions for budding music listeners, one would be to ignore anything the NY Times puts on a list, the odds of finding a banging record in the paper of record is almost zero, their music writers have always been the worst. Ignore NPR, what a bag of soft ass over there.

The other is just life advice, don't listen to Wilco, Wilco is one of the most boring bands ever, right up there with The National, don't listen to them, man that shit is energy vampire music, awfulness incarnate.

Episode 82 kicks off with some minimalist instrumental funk, segues into medium laidback African music out of Senegal, dips into some dark indie from Big Brave, and on and on it goes for 13 minutes. The episode concludes with some electronic metal out of Kenya and nothing signifies where The Magic Organ is at more than a tune by an African metal musician that is distorted and aggro but surely is not typical metal!

The Magic Organ is unaffiliated with the corporate bastards who are presently running the music business deeper into the toilet, it is an independent effort focused on quality over genre. Ask yourself who else is trafficking as widely as The Magic Organ? C'mon now, the answer is nobody, nobody comes close to The Magic Organ in terms of what's in the flavor packet.

Imagine if the New York Times recommended passionate music, extreme music, and music reflecting the human condition. But alas it is not to be. Today we cruise through the 8 of the NY Times' best tracks of the first half of 2024. As I initially was constructing this episode I noticed the excellent space rock on offer from Okavango African Orchestra in track 3, and how the Brazilian MCs take American sounds and make them their own in the final track. All these various sounds and sonic subcultures slurping around the interwebz, picked up and checked out by other folks in other places and thereby changed even a wee bit as they spread. It's cool to see creativity in action.

I ended up titling this episode Skills and Vibes as it came out whilst I was spieling over the faded tracks and I liked it a whole bunch with it. The crosstalk will continue to occur, it's near the heart of what music makes it onto The Magic Organ.

First off the mistakes. I say in this episode that the Nihiloxica tune is off a remix album and it's not, it's off their new record called Source of Denial which just came out on Crammed Discs and you should check that record out. That's how it works with the mistakes, those folks who get victimized get some added mentions in the show notes.

The Hella record is called Hold Your Horse Is and that just mentally hosed the voice changer which didn't understand the joke/pun so if you get that far that's the reason for that mangle. If that's any indication of the humorlessness of the incoming AI then we are f*cked. #sadface

I freeball all my commentary and alas I make mistakes. I mistakenly say in this episode that the second group Teke::Teke is from Japan because they have a female singer with a Japanese accent. This outfit is from Canada and their new record sounds like Captain Beefheart's car smashed into a bus with some Japanese flavors in it. I say on the spot that it's a Shonen Knife-Captain Beefheart car crash but it's more art school rock than punk rock. So be it.

Still, we get a little North Africa in the hizzy with the Charif Megarbane track Tarator in the third position I say don't sleep on Homeboy Sandman's new album Rich, he's a clever MC, funny and smart. Otherwise the episode kicks off with a track out of Berlin, an interesting mash of electronic and other sounds, a little Caribbean dancefloor bangin', old school punk it goes on an on and cuz that's how the Magic Organ rolls.

As for the title I recently read a blog post where the writer described large music stars in America as cult leaders, actively cultivating their fans (no pun!), and it ends up more about some weird relationship and status thing, and oy The Magic Organ is vehemently opposed to that. That's why the Magic Organ hates both Drake and Tay Tay, it's a cult!!! Music is music, it's something humans have done for centuries, once and still with drums, but also with whatever tools they have humans have they will make music. And it doesn't have to be some weird cult.

I got the idea for this episode in the middle of a global heat wave and though the scorching temps seem to be dying down a bit, the music out of Africa this summer has been hot hot hot.

With the exception of the third excerpt from BKO the rest of these records were released this summer and that's pretty damned impressive. I can't say I've heard five rock records out of the U.S. or the U.K. that come close to this level of funkiness, entertainment and listener satisfaction.

From the toasting, Devo-esque tunes of the first group, Nana Benz du Togo to the variety on the new African Head Charge record, to the sheer prog like virtuosity of the new record from Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy feel free to get your peep on.

Episode 57! Peep the fancy Latin episode title this week and bask in the old school vibes. It translates to 'against endless repetition' and it's a sentiment worth spreading around.

It was inspired by the short except in this episode by Angel Bat Dawid: 'This endless repetition is like a Chain around the Spirit. And it is a reflection of the denial of the future to the Negro in the American way of life.' In the episode I left out the second part of the title due to a screenshot I do of the playlist every time I record an episode. That is the whole title, it's awesome, all the titles and the music on the record are great and I have given Ms. Dawid extra space in the show notes here as a form of amends for my error.

I guess the most boring thing to do right here in this space is to say everything sucks and it's boring but if I've joined the fight against boring I wouldn't do the predictable boring thing but say hey there's a lot of reasons why things can get so boring, have some sympathy for all the folks out there who struggle to get by and you're a jerk asking them to entertain you, and that the machine (our society) that produces all this boring, predictable culture is very complex. Whew, boring may be boring but the reasons why are certainly not.

Episode 52, a celebration of a music podcast episode without any Grammy award winners or nominees. I thnk Fantastic Negrito was nominated for a Grammy award last year and I like his last record but it's not often that I traffic in it!
