The Maggid Method: Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin16 May 202400:33:32

Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin is an American Orthodox rabbi, writer, adjunct professor, and host of the ultra popular 1840 podcast.

We covered a lot of ground in this conversation.

First off, we talk about a love of both of ours - the craft of comedy - and the 2 ways that the mechanics of humor relate to communicating Torah messages.

After this - we move in to structure - Dovid blew me away - and I’m not exaggerating - with a 3 step method that he uses for every talk, every class, every presentation - and it’s based on the mechanics of how a magic trick works.

This was by far one of the coolest things I had ever heard before - that he could take this esoteric idea - it actually got made into a book and a movie called ‘The Prestige’ - and he turned it into a templated structure that he now applies to everything he communicates to audiences everywhere.

Then we move even deeper into the forest - where we discuss the audience/speaker relationship - how you must love them and respect them as co-creators in your presentation, but never use them to get your needs met.

And then, rounding up Act III of this episode - we discuss the boundaries of vulnerability in leadership - and how important is it for a rabbi or other leader to put on a strong front for his congregation vs revealing to them his own struggles for the sake of being relatable to the people he’s trying to help grow.

And lastly - Dovid shares his top 3 pieces of advice for new congregational leaders - to set them up for professional and personal success.

The Maggid Method: Rabbi Yechezkel Freundlich12 May 202401:00:25

Rabbi Yechezkel Freundlich is Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Sholom, in Lawrence NY.

His career began in Chinuch, not in Rabbanus - so when he found himself having to prepare and deliver Drashos - it was something he sweated over.

But he soon hit his stride as Associate Rabbi at Congregation Beth Jacob in Atlanta, GA - where he discovered the power of a good story to capture his congregants' attention and drive his message home.

Thus began his practice of curating relatable stories - literally wherever he could find them.

In this delightful episode of the Maggid Method - we discuss:

  • How long should you speak for?

  • What should be your goal with your speaking?

How to become sensitive to your speaking environment,

  • How Rabbi Fruendlich deals with the contention that perhaps his Drashos are not sophisticated enough as others,

  • What it’s like to succeed a Rabbi Emeritus who’s been with the Kehilla for many decades,

  • And we even talk about Kiddush clubs and drinking in Shul - if, when, and how to address the issue.

Rabbi Dovid M. Cohen  served as a communal Rabbi for decades, at Congregation Shomrei Torah in Fair Lawn, NJ,  Young Israel of the West Side in Manhattan, and Congregation Ohr Torah in North Woodmere, NY.

- lawyer,

- family counselor,

an author, speaker, podcaster, and an entrepreneur...

And he currently serves as Senior Relationship Officer at the Orthodox Union’s Yachad division.

But if there’s one thing that wearing all of these different hats has taught Rabbi Cohen, it’s the delicate art of balance.

In this enjoyable episode of the Maggid Method, Rabbi Cohen and I discuss:

  • How and when to use candor in your presentations, without making your audience too uncomfortable...

  • How to present sides of an issue, without alienating a portion of your audience...

  • How to try your hardest, without getting down on yourself when you fail...

The Maggid Method: Rabbi Shaul Robinson03 May 202401:06:51

Rabbi Shaul Robinson is the Senior Rabbi at Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York City.

Rabbi Robinson is unique in the sense that he entered the rabbinate without a preconceived notion of how a pulpit rabbi should speak.

Rabbi Robinson’s career began on campus, as an outreach professional, where he transformed lives through his informal conversation.

And that tone and style of speaking has always been the ideal for him, even nowadays when he has to deliver more formal presentations.

In this informative episode of the Maggid Method, we talk about:

- The golden standard you should aim for any time you get up to speak...

- The need for authenticity in presentation...

- And the mindset that everything you need to speak about on a given Shabbos can be found in the Parsha.

We also talk about the hazard of inadvertently alienating a portion of your congregation with your message - and how to avoid doing it.

The Maggid Method: Rabbi Reuben Poupko14 Apr 202401:05:42

Rabbi Rueben Poupko is Rabbi of Beth Israel Beth Aaron in Montreal, Canada.

His father was a rabbi, and his grandfather was a rabbi, too.

After 43 years, Rabbi Poupko recognizes very well the dilemma that pulpit rabbis face everytime they get up to speak.

So how does a rabbi go about keeping his congregation interested and engaged?

By being a lifelong learner - in terms of substance, and in terms of style.

Rabbi Poupko sees the role of a sermon as multifaceted - sometimes you’re there to teach, but sometimes you’re not teaching your congregation anything new - but giving expression to what’s in their hearts.

In this episode of the Maggid Method - we’re treated to over 4 decades worth of public speaking wisdom, rabbinic advice, and unbelievable true stories from a seasoned pulpit veteran who’s never written down a word of his sermons…

Like -

- the best speaking tone for delivering a Drasha,

- how to encourage better behavior,

- which order to speak at a funeral,

- and when to accept that -  some things will just never change.

I learned, laughed and even cried during my interview with Rabbi Rueben Poupko.

The Maggid Method: Rabbi Elliot Schrier12 Apr 202400:56:21

Rabbi Elliot Schrier is Senior Rabbi of Congregation Bnai Yeshurun - the largest Orthodox synagogue in Teaneck, NJ, boasting 6 different Minyanim on a given Shabbos morning.

But despite its size,  Rabbi Schrier still makes the time to connect with each of his members personally - through his daily routine of touch points.

Early into his career - Rabbi Schrier had the privilege of being mentored by one the great Darshanim of our generation, Rabbi Kenneth Hain, Senior Rabbi of Beth Shalom in Lawrence, NY.

This mindset - seeing the Drasha as a means of connection between rabbi and Kehillah - influences all aspects of how Rabbi Schrier crafts and delivers his Drashos.

Including how he structures the Drasha, and forgoing the use of notes - even though speaking from them might make him come across a more polished speaker

If you’re a speaker who’s looking to better connect to your audience through your presentation  - then this episode is for you.

It’s jam packed with lots of useful strategies and techniques that you’ll want to put to practice right away, like:

- tips for making your Drasha more personable and relatable,

- how to ensure sure your speaking style is appropriate to the room (clip)

- and an ingenious way of structuring your Drasha to retain your audience’s attention.

The Maggid Method: Rabbi Y.Y. Jacobson10 Apr 202401:03:01

Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak - a.k.a Y.Y. - Jacobson is one of the most sought after speakers in the Jewish world today.

He lectures to Jewish and non-Jewish audiences on six continents and in forty states.

Rabbi Jacobson also serves as teacher and mentor to thousands of students across the globe via his website TheYeshiva.net, one of the largest Torah classes in the world today.

But as ironic as it sounds, Rabbi Y.Y. didn’t start off his career as a speaker, but rather, as a listener; as an oral scribe of the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s talks delivered on Shabbos and Yom Tov - when they could not be electronically recorded.

Young Rabbi Jacobson would focus the entire weight of his attention on the Rebbe’s words for hours on end, sometimes over the span of several days, in order to be able to capture the Rebbe’s messages and relate them back afterwards.

These days, even though Rabbi Jacobson finds himself doing more speaking than listening - he essentially sees his role as the same.

In this fascinating episode of the Maggid Method - we chart the trajectory of Rabbi Jacobson’s career as a teacher of Torah and world renowned lecturer, and the specific things he does to capture the minds and hearts of audience’s worldwide.

We cover so many topics...

Like:

- How to make your Torah content relevant to your audience, so they’ll become invested in listening to you all the way through...

- How to break down the walls between you and your audience and create a sense of intimacy...

- How to become a better storyteller...

- How to manage audience attention and deal with the inevitable distractions that arise while you’re talking....

- And even how to handle criticism.

The Maggid Method: Rabbi Daniel Cohen05 Apr 202400:52:21

Rabbi Daniel Cohen is Rabbi at Congregation Agudath Sholom in Stamford, CT, the largest Modern Orthodox synagogue in New England.

But for Rabbi Cohen, "large" doesn’t have to mean it’s not welcoming…

Rabbi Cohen is a person who is on a mission to live each day to the fullest, and to help others do the same.

He’s learned from some of the best Darshanim and orators of this generation, so he has a lot of public speaking wisdom and Drasha experience to offer.

In this episode, we talk about:

- How to decide what to talk about each Shabbos, and what if your message doesn’t necessarily fit into the Parsha?

- What if your heart is not 100% aligned with your message  should you still say it?

- How many messages should you aim for with your Drasha?

- An ingenious way to get people to turn off their phones while you’re speaking,

- How to strike the right balance the head and the heart in your talk…

- And how to tell stories and where to place them in your Drasha  for maximum effect...

Rabbi Cohen is author of What Will They Say About You When You Are Gone? Creating a Life of Legacy and the newly released book The Secret of the Light published by Union Square Publishing.

Today you’re in for a real treat. In this episode, I sit down with Rabbi Dr. J.J. Schacter, the elder statesman of the synagogue sermon.

Early into my podcast, I lost track of how many times Rabbi Schacter’s name came up in conversation

Whether it’s been through his classes at YU, or his annual Yarchei Kallah seminars, or just being available for 1:1 advice...

So many of my guests have cited him as having been an invaluable

- influence,

- mentor,

- and confidante....

to them In their rabbinic careers.

Today's episode is jam packed with actionable advice, timeless techniques, and legendary sermon lore…

The Maggid Method: Rabbi Shmuel Silber03 Apr 202400:55:09

Rabbi Shmuel Silber is Rabbi of Suburban Orthodox Congregation in Baltimore, MD.

And though he may not look it - just for the record, he is a Chassid and not a Litvak.

Rabbi Silber’s career began in Fairlawn, NJ where he served as an assistant rabbi in Congregation Shomrei Torah, under Rabbi Benyamin Yudin, where he learned firsthand his all-in approach to the rabbinate.

But It was Rabbi J.J. Schacter who instilled in Rabbi Silber the principle that: proper respect for your Drasha is proper respect for your Kehillah.

How does Rabbi Silber decide which message to speak about each week?  That’s easy. First, He decides what HE needs to hear, and then he addresses himself through his Drasha to his congregation..

You might ask - how does Rabbi Silber know that just because he’s grappling with an issue - it will resonate with his congregation? That’s also easy - because Rabbi Silber views himself as one with his congregation.

We also talk about why it’s so important for the rabbi to look after the marginalized members on the periphery - or the outskirts - of his congregation.

Visit Rabbi Silber's website, The Institute for Jewish Continuity at https://rabbisilber.com/to where he enables learners at all levels to access relevant Torah.

The Maggid Method: Rabbi Menachem Penner27 Mar 202400:58:33

Rabbi Menachem Penner is the Executive VP of the Rabbinical Council of America.

And for the past 11 years, he has been the Dean of RIETS, Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, at Yeshiva University. Prior to that, Rabbi Penner was the Senior Rabbi at Young Israel of Holliswood, NY for 20 years.

He’s the one person who’s name has come up more times on this podcast than anyone else’s as having been an influence - in regards to the mindset and the methodology behind giving a great Drasha.

So..needless to say, this episode of the Maggid Method is a pretty big event.

In today’s conversation, Rabbi Penner lays out the sky high stakes facing anyone who shares Divrei Torah in a public setting, every time they get up to speak…

We discuss the stark reality that you will NOT change most people’s lives by any one Drasha that you deliver, But why that’s actually a good thing…

Rabbi Penner also explains the one goal you should aim for with your Drashos - bring your congregation to the brink of change, so that when they’re ready - you’re the address they turn to.

We talk about the doldrums of the rabbinate - the nagging feeling that surfaces from time to time in every leaders mind that - maybe I’m not making a difference in people’s lives and that maybe I should have considered a different career path…

Next - we go into the nuts and bolts of Drasha preparation - beginning with the thesis statement - your ability to articulate what exactly you intend to talk about.

How to avoid losing trust and credibility in the eyes of your audience that results from what Rabbi Penner calls “the message basket” type of Drasha.

The counterintuitive approach that Rabbi Penner tries to instill in RIETS students approach to Drasha preparation.

How long you should spend looking for what to say, and how to know when you’ve found something....

Rabbi Penner’s opinion that a Drasha does not need to contain original Torah thoughts...

And how the children’s show Blue’s Clues provides the perfect Mashal for how you should approach your Drasha preparation.

The Maggid Method Podcast: Rabbi Ilan Feldman 19 Mar 202400:57:10

In the spring of 2007, Rabbi Ilan Feldman - Senior Rabbi of Beth Jacob of Atlanta, GA - was offered by his congregation to take a short vacation. But he declined - because he didn’t feel he needed one.

But after thinking it over - he decided to take them up on it. But his family was unable to join him, so he didn’t know where to go.

Until a friend arranged the following unknown adventure...

He would fly to an undisclosed location - which would only be revealed to him on the day of his departure, when he would be handed an airline ticket revealing his destination.

No accommodations were booked for him, nor was he allowed to take any money or luggage with him, save for a token $50, his Tefillin, and a baseball cap and a change of clothes.

He was not allowed to reveal his identity as a congregational rabbi to anyone, and he was only allowed to use his phone once a day - just to check in with his wife.

Stripped of all worldly possessions and his identity - he was to fend for himself for the next 4 days and somehow make it alive and in one piece back to Atlanta, GA.

In this episode, we discuss the true story of what transpired on that trip.

In the 2nd part of our conversation, we discuss:

  • The rules of public speaking that Rabbi Feldman unabashedly revealed to me that he breaks,

  • The inhibition Rabbi Feldman felt following in his father’s footsteps as leader of Beth Jacob,

  • The impact that his mentors  - his father, Rabbi Emanuel Feldman, and his father in law, Rabbi Yaakov Weinberg - had on his speaking style,

  • The once a year Shabbos when he tells the congregation everything he loves about them, and the one Shabbos a year he offers gentle criticism for how they can improve.

  • And the three most important pieces of advice he has for new rabbis to be successful.

Rabbi Yaakov Sadigh is Head of Katz Hillel Day School of Boca Raton, FL.

He’s on a mission to change the world, but the way he inspires that change is just as important as the change itself.

Rabbi Sadigh’s first big encounter with change was when he was just 9 years old, living peacefully in Iran, when the Shah was overthrown.

When he was 17 years old, he became a student of change - at Ezra Academy, in Queens, NY - where he was taught by one of the most life-changing teachers of our generation - Rabbi Moshe Weinberger

It was there that Rabbi Yaakov absorbed a powerful, transformative speaking style.

Today, Rabbi Sadigh lectures around the world.

- How to help people appreciate their jobs

- How to create a culture that lasts  - even after its builders have moved on, and

-How to create - not just great products and services for your customers - but to offer them magical experiences.

Of course - we talk about the fundamentals of transformative speaking, like:

- How Rabbi Sadigh quickly creates connection with each new audience he speaks to,

- How to cut out the opening chit chat and grab an audience’s attention immediately, and...

The Maggid Method Podcast: Rabbi Rael Blumenthal23 Feb 202401:01:00

Rabbi Rael Blumenthal is the rabbi of Boca Raton Synagogue West in Sunny South Florida.

He’s a rabbi on a very public journey of change.

In this episode of the Maggid Method, Rabbi Blumenthal candidly shares how a few years back, he became dissatisfied with his body weight and eating habits, and how he set out to shed the pounds in a very methodical  - and public type of way - with the goal of inspiring his congregation to make positive changes in their lives, too.

If there’s one word that defines Rabbi Blumenthal’s Drashos -  it’s relevance.

In this interview, we discuss a fascinating technique Rabbi Blumenthal uses to guarantee that his congregation not only listens to his Drashos - but they actually retain the message long after his Drasha his over.

We also cover how Rabbi Blumenthal needed to shift his speaking style to reach the current generation of Shul goers, vs how he was trained to speak while growing up.

And we also talk about how you can use the challenge of speaking in an era of distraction and shrinking attention spans to your advantage.

What I love about Rabbi Blumenthal is how seriously he takes his role as rabbi, yet at the same time, how he doesn't take himself too seriously - and how humbled he is at the opportunity to be in his position.

The Maggid Method Podcast: Rabbi Shmuel Hain19 Feb 202401:02:25

Rabbi Shmuel Hain is Rabbi of Young Israel Ohab Zedek of North Riverdale/Yonkers, as well as Rosh Beit Midrash at SAR High School.

Shmuel Hain is a rabbi, the son of a rabbi, so the apple didn't fall from the tree when he decided to enter the rabbinate.

He learned invaluable lessons from his father that he was able to apply to his own career, but he’s a different variety of apple, bringing his own flavor and unique style of sermon to the pulpit.

Rabbi Hain has a very specific philosophy about the purpose of a Drasha nowadays - vs how it used to be a generation ago.

He’s very intentional about the content and delivery style of his sermon - because to him, it’s a springboard to connect with his congregants and get them to reach out to him to discuss any challenges they may be going through in their own lives.

But probably the most effort Rabbi Hain puts in to his speaking is for the life cycle events, like at a bar or bat mitzvah

Rabbi Hain is an expert in the Jewish laws of death and mourning.

In this interview, he candidly describes his impetus for mastering those skills - with knowledge and compassion.

We also discuss what the goal is of a successful eulogy, and the importance of being your authentic self with your congregation.

The Maggid Method Podcast: Rabbi Noah Whittenburg13 Feb 202400:49:47

Rabbi Noah Whittenburg grew up on the East Coast, in Portland ME - but his rabbinic career took him as far west across the country as you can go - to sunny San Diego, CA, where he currently serves as the Assistant Rabbi at Beth Jacob Congregation.

Rabbi Whittenburg wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do after graduating from Rutger’s University, but one thing he was certain of: it had to involve learning Torah.

What he found though, was that the more Torah he learned - the more he wanted to share it with other people, which eventually led to his decision to become a rabbi.

In hindsight, it was such a natural fit for Rabbi Whittenburg, the teaching and forging of deep relationships with people - it’s hard to conceive of him doing anything else.

In this insightful episode:

Rabbi Whittenburg shares:

- his process for crafting Drashos,

- his goals,

- the book that changed the way he tells stories,

- his philosophy of "shorter is better",

- And the different ways he measures the impact of his Drashos

As much as Rabbi Whittenburg loves to teach, he remains at heart a lifelong learner, which is evident from the way he approaches his Drasha preparation:

He’s flexible, solicits feedback, places a premium on practice and is hyper focused on growth.

This was a fun and insightful interview and I learned so much, as I hope you do, too.

The Maggid Method Podcast: Rabbi Daniel Glatstein05 Feb 202400:35:43

Rabbi Daniel Glatstein is Rav of Kehilas Tiferes Mordechai in Cedarhurst, NY and one of the Jewish world’s most popular speakers and respected Torah teachers.

He's a published author of several series of Sefarim and numerous volumes of English Torah books published by Artscroll….

But what Rabbi Glatstein is probably most known for is his more than 10,000 recorded classes that have garnered literally millions of views on Torahanytime.com and numerous other platforms.

Today, Rabbi Glatstein and I talk about his goals for a Drasha, and how you can measure your success as a speaker and disseminator of Torah messages.

We discuss which kinds of stories are most effective and the kinds of stories that fall flat.

Rabbi Glatstein also shares with us some of his pet peeves, like when speakers and teachers of Torah demonstrate a lack of regard for their audience by failing to put in the proper amount of preparation before their talk.

There are plenty of golden nuggets and pearls of public speaking wisdom contained in today’s episode.

It’s clear to me that Rabbi Glatstein takes the role and responsibility of speaking and teaching very, very seriously.

I’m grateful for the time he took out of his busy schedule to talk with me and I learned so much from our conversation.

Originally from Australia, Rabbi Becher is known for his Torah wisdom, his dry wit, and his encyclopedic knowledge of Jewish history.

Rabbi Becher taught at Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem, where I was privileged many years ago to sit in on many of his memorable classes and lectures.

He’s an alumni rabbi of Neve Yerushalayim, an instructor at YU, and did I mention he also served in the IDF?

In this lively conversation - we discuss:

  • the power of a great title for your talk
  • what to do when you’re not connecting with the audience
  • how to make the sources you quote come to life for the audience...

Plus, a great joke you can use to get people to graciously turn off their cell phones before you begin speaking.

Rabbi Becher is a natural born teacher who wants everyone who attends his classes to walk away with a positive association with Torah Judaism.

The Maggid Method Podcast: Rabbi Yisrael Motzen19 Jan 202400:42:10

Rabbi Yisrael Motzen serves as rabbi of Ner Tamid Greenspring Valley Synagogue in Baltimore, MD.

He’s someone who takes his sermon speaking slot very seriously.

Rabbi Motzen is that rare dichotomy of high intention - he’s very thought out about how he goes about preparing and delivering his Drashos - but on the other hand - he places a premium on flexibility; he refuses to be pinned down to any one style or system of Drasha,

He’s even been known to dispense with the weekly Parsha in his sermon altogether

What I love about Rabbi Motzen is the high standard he holds himself to, and his philosophy that the live drasha needs to be an experience you can’t get anywhere else

We cover so many topics in our time together like:

- How to strike a balance between being vulnerable with your congregation and not oversharing

- The time Rabbi Motzen fainted in the middle of his sermon

- The power of having a partner to collaborate with

- The need for truly honest feedback

- And how to stay hyper attuned to audience attention and engagement

I learned so much from my conversation and I’m sure you will, too.

The Maggid Method Podcast: Rabbi Ariel Rackovsky18 Jan 202400:54:31

Rabbi Ariel Rackovsky is rabbi of Congregation Shaare Tefilla in Dallas, Texas.

Rabbi Rackovsky and I go all the way back to Rochester, NY, where, growing up, we attended the same Shul - Congregation Beth Hakneses Hachodosh - BHH, or St. Regis, as some irreverently called it, after the street on which it was situated.

Several decades later, we caught up as adults and reminisced about some of our fondest memories about the shul, its spiritual leader at the time, Rabbi Aryeh Sokoloff, and the unique cast of characters and hidden Tzaddikim that every shul seems to possess.

Rabbi Rackovsky and discuss the value of collaboration when it comes to preparing a Drasha, and his process for developing ideas with some of the best rabbinical minds in the field today.

We also talk about the two models of Drasha - content based or context based.

You’ll discover:

  • some great, go-to resources for finding Divrei Torah and stories,
  • Rabbi Rackovsky’s unique approach to his Neilah sermon
  • techniques for securing audience attention right at the start of the Drasha,
  • a storytelling method that Rabbi Rackovsky learned from Rabbi Ilan Feldman, in Atlanta, GA,
  • and some of Rabbi Rackovsky's influences and mentors that have shaped his Drasha style into what it is today.

His sermons are published here: https://www.shaaretefilla.org/sermons

The Maggid Method Podcast: Rabbi Daniel Grama10 Jan 202401:06:39

Rabbi Daniel Grama is the rabbi of the Westside Shul in Los Angeles and an award-winning teacher in Valley Torah Yeshiva High School.

You may recognize Rabbi Grama’s name from a highly popular episode of the 1840 podcast - featuring Rabbi Grama and his daughter Aliza, who co-host an Instagram Live program called “Torah Tuesdays.”

Rabbi Grama is a self-described “student of life” - he learns from everyone and everything, and his approach to public speaking is no different

We discuss the role of speaker as Shaliach Tzibbur, a representative of the congregation, and how that responsibility should shape the substance and the style of every presentation you give.

You’ll hear about how Rabbi Grama has evolved over the years as a speaker - with a little help from his wife...

And we also talk A LOT about technique - if you want to learn different things you can do to keep the audience engaged - you’re going to want to listen to this episode.

We also discuss the value of vulnerability - opening up to your audience and letting them into your life as a means towards connecting with them and growing together through some of life’s shared challenges.

One thing that comes across loud and clear is how intentional a speaker Rabbi Grama is - and how much he’s thought about his craft and the goals he has for his speaking slot.

We share some jokes, some heart-warming stories, and I’m sure you’ll learn a lot as I did, from my conversation with Rabbi Daniel Grama.
