Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin is an American Orthodox rabbi, writer, adjunct professor, and host of the ultra popular 1840 podcast.

We covered a lot of ground in this conversation. 

First off, we talk about a love of both of ours - the craft of comedy - and the 2 ways that the mechanics of humor relate to communicating Torah messages. 

After this - we move in to structure - Dovid blew me away - and I’m not exaggerating - with a 3 step method that he uses for every talk, every class, every presentation - and it’s based on the mechanics of how a magic trick works. 

This was by far one of the coolest things I had ever heard before - that he could take this esoteric idea - it actually got made into a book and a movie called ‘The Prestige’ - and he turned it into a templated structure that he now applies to everything he communicates to audiences everywhere. 

Then we move even deeper into the forest - where we discuss the audience/speaker relationship - how you must love them and respect them as co-creators in your presentation, but never use them to get your needs met.

And then, rounding up Act III of this episode - we discuss the boundaries of vulnerability in leadership - and how important is it for a rabbi or other leader to put on a strong front for his congregation vs revealing to them his own struggles for the sake of being relatable to the people he’s trying to help grow.

And lastly - Dovid shares his top 3 pieces of advice for new congregational leaders - to set them up for professional and personal success.

Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak - a.k.a Y.Y. - Jacobson is one of the most sought after speakers in the Jewish world today.

Rabbi Shmuel Silber is Rabbi of Suburban Orthodox Congregation in Baltimore, MD.

Rabbi Menachem Penner is the Executive VP of the Rabbinical Council of America.

And for the past 11 years, he has been the Dean of RIETS, Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, at Yeshiva University. Prior to that, Rabbi Penner was the Senior Rabbi at Young Israel of Holliswood, NY for 20 years.

In the spring of 2007, Rabbi Ilan Feldman - Senior Rabbi of Beth Jacob of Atlanta, GA - was offered by his congregation to take a short vacation. But he declined - because he didn’t feel he needed one.

But after thinking it over - he decided to take them up on it. But his family was unable to join him, so he didn’t know where to go.

Until a friend arranged the following unknown adventure... 

He would fly to an undisclosed location - which would only be revealed to him on the day of his departure, when he would be handed an airline ticket revealing his destination.

No accommodations were booked for him, nor was he allowed to take any money or luggage with him, save for a token $50, his Tefillin, and a baseball cap and a change of clothes. 

He was not allowed to reveal his identity as a congregational rabbi to anyone, and he was only allowed to use his phone once a day - just to check in with his wife. 

Stripped of all worldly possessions and his identity - he was to fend for himself for the next 4 days and somehow make it alive and in one piece back to Atlanta, GA.

In this episode, we discuss the true story of what transpired on that trip.

In the 2nd part of our conversation, we discuss:

• The rules of public speaking that Rabbi Feldman unabashedly revealed to me that he breaks, 

• The inhibition Rabbi Feldman felt following in his father’s footsteps as leader of Beth Jacob,

• The once a year Shabbos when he tells the congregation everything he loves about them, and the one Shabbos a year he offers gentle criticism for how they can improve.

Rabbi Rael Blumenthal is the rabbi of Boca Raton Synagogue West in Sunny South Florida.

Rabbi Shmuel Hain is Rabbi of Young Israel Ohab Zedek of North Riverdale/Yonkers, as well as Rosh Beit Midrash at SAR High School.

Shmuel Hain is a rabbi, the son of a rabbi, so the apple didn't fall from the tree when he decided to enter the rabbinate.

He learned invaluable lessons from his father that he was able to apply to his own career, but he’s a different variety of apple, bringing his own flavor and unique style of sermon to the pulpit.

Rabbi Hain has a very specific philosophy about the purpose of a Drasha nowadays - vs how it used to be a generation ago.

He’s very intentional about the content and delivery style of his sermon - because to him, it’s a springboard to connect with his congregants and get them to reach out to him to discuss any challenges they may be going through in their own lives. 

But probably the most effort Rabbi Hain puts in to his speaking is for the life cycle events, like at a bar or bat mitzvah 

Rabbi Hain is an expert in the Jewish laws of death and mourning.

In this interview, he candidly describes his impetus for mastering those skills - with knowledge and compassion.

We also discuss what the goal is of a successful eulogy, and the importance of being your authentic self with your congregation.

Rabbi Noah Whittenburg grew up on the East Coast, in Portland ME - but his rabbinic career took him as far west across the country as you can go - to sunny San Diego, CA, where he currently serves as the Assistant Rabbi at Beth Jacob Congregation.

Rabbi Whittenburg wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do after graduating from Rutger’s University, but one thing he was certain of: it had to involve learning Torah.

What he found though, was that the more Torah he learned - the more he wanted to share it with other people, which eventually led to his decision to become a rabbi. 

In hindsight, it was such a natural fit for Rabbi Whittenburg, the teaching and forging of deep relationships with people - it’s hard to conceive of him doing anything else.

Rabbi Mordechai Becher is a world-renowned teacher, lecturer, and author whose latest book - Gateway to Judaism - is in its 10th printing. 

Originally from Australia, Rabbi Becher is known for his Torah wisdom, his dry wit, and his encyclopedic knowledge of Jewish history. 

Rabbi Becher taught at Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem, where I was privileged many years ago to sit in on many of his memorable classes and lectures.

Eliezer Blatt is a public speaking expert who’s spent the last 25 years training the who’s who on the Jewish speaking circuit today.

Then, he worked behind the scenes at MTV, The Cosby Show, and PBS’s Reading Rainbow...

And somehow he ended up studying at Aish HaTorah in Jeusalem and served as  Rabbi Noach Weinberg’s personal assistant.

Rabbi Yisrael Motzen serves as rabbi of Ner Tamid Greenspring Valley Synagogue in Baltimore, MD.

He’s someone who takes his sermon speaking slot very seriously.

Rabbi Motzen is that rare dichotomy of high intention - he’s very thought out about how he goes about preparing and delivering his Drashos - but on the other hand - he places a premium on flexibility; he refuses to be pinned down to any one style or system of Drasha, 

He’s even been known to dispense with the weekly Parsha in his sermon altogether 

What I love about Rabbi Motzen is the high standard he holds himself to, and his philosophy that the live drasha needs to be an experience you can’t get anywhere else

Rabbi Ariel Rackovsky is rabbi of Congregation Shaare Tefilla in Dallas, Texas. 

Rabbi Rackovsky and I go all the way back to Rochester, NY, where, growing up, we attended the same Shul - Congregation Beth Hakneses Hachodosh - BHH, or St. Regis, as some irreverently called it, after the street on which it was situated.
