A Lesson From David Lynch And My Four Year Old Child
lundi 10 mars 2025 • Duration 09:05
This weeks episode is coming to you from a post cyclone house with no power and very limited internet - so this newsletter will be brief and I encourage you to watch or listen to the episode because it’s a wonderful mindset reminder for creatives!
Focus is a hot topic right now, whether it’s being stolen by social media, endless news headlines or comparing ourselves online and beyond, our focus is seldom on the things that we actually care about the most.
I’m now uploading video versions of the podcast on YouTube on a second channel called “The Lucy Lumen Show”. If you prefer to watch than listen you should make sure you’re subscribed over there.
In this episode I share an unlikely story that shows how even at the age of 4 we struggle to block out our surroundings and focus on our own efforts and intentions. I’m always amazed how much parenting teaches me about everything in life.
Let me know if this resonates with you or helps to spark something that makes you go “YES!” and have a breakthrough in your creative pursuits.
I’ll be back this Friday with my usual full length newsletter and able to resume portfolio reviews as of next week too if you have been waiting to book in.
Here’s to focusing on you and your own output and goals and i’ll chat with you all soon.
Love Lucy

Should Problematic Artists Really Be Cancelled?
Season 4 · Episode 1
mercredi 5 mars 2025 • Duration 06:49
This week’s episode is just a taster of a topic i’ve been marinating on for a while so I’m not really coming to a solid conclusion here, but more so raising the topic and sharing some recent resources that had me thinking more about this predicament we unfortunately find ourselves in when it comes to artists who have problematic pasts.
I’m not one to jump to cancelling people for mistakes or missteps and I don’t think everything should be politicised quite as much as it is right now. But then on the other hand it’s sometimes hard to look away or disregard certain actions or behaviour and simply go on enjoying an artists work. But then again what if it’s one of the greatest pieces of art ever created like Manhattan and Annie hall? Below are some links to things I mention in the video if you’re interested.

Publishing A Photography Magazine With No Experience - Charlotte Rose Beers of Her Exposure
lundi 23 décembre 2024 • Duration 01:04:42
Full show notes with links and extended info from this episode AVAILABLE HERE or www.lucylumen.com
Today I’m bringing you an in person interview with a mother, publisher, curator and film shooter, and a personal friend of mine Charlotte Rose Beers who is based about 15 mins away from me here on the gold coast.
When Charlotte was in Japan earlier this year she decided to start an instagram page celebrating the work of female film photographers and she wasted no time accelerating that goal to a printed magazine that is now in its third issue and almost sold out.
A hard working woman showing us all that an idea is only an idea and we must act promptly and with passion if we want to create community and see our idea come to life.
I’m so proud of Charlotte's efforts and I hope this chat inspires you to kick off the new year in a meaningful way.
We chat about the why behind the zine, the logistics of creating it, what it takes to curate, how to build a community online using social media but without selling your soul to the algo and how parenthood is the biggest motivator for change in this world.
If you are starting out in film or feeling frustrated with the results you are getting then I have a guide just for you. This beginner film photography ebook helps to side step the mistakes and start getting beautiful results from your film rolls!

For podcasting I recommend using a dynamic microphone as it will reject a lot of room sound and background noise. The most important part is to make sure you are as close as you can comfortably be. Using a pop filter can help reduce sibilance and plosives as well.
Cheap But Great Option
►Samson Technologies Q2U https://amzn.to/3BzqP63Expensive option
►Shure SM7B Vocal Dynamic Microphone https://amzn.to/3BAmFL4 Unless you have a really high quality preamp a level booster will give you a much cleaner sound
►Cloudlifter CL-1 Microphone Activator https://amzn.to/3DEuOkk
►Triton Audio FetHead https://amzn.to/3duCZFb
►Rode PSA1 Mic Arm https://amzn.to/3Uc3jno
