After Dave treats us to a “Thunderbolts*” mini-review and John discusses “The Accountant 2”, the boys dive into the year 1934 to discuss “The Thin Man”, a film so successful and unique it spawned FIVE sequels and made a dog one of the most famous dogs in cinema history. Written by a husband-and-wife team, “The Thin Man” is a detective “pseudo-comedy” whodunit with tension, laughs, fun, mystery, and intrigue, all done by some stellar characters. Grab a beer and join us for a ride!

"Black Swan": Films of 2010 + "Sinners" Mini-Review24 Apr 202501:23:06

This week, John was the only one of us who saw “Sinners” on Easter, so he offers a spoiler-free mini-review before the boys get to their featured conversation, “Black Swan”: Films of 2010. The random year generator spun 2010, a repeat for us (The Social Network, Incendies), so we break down the film year, the news year, and dive into a conversation about this psychological thriller that hit three artists- two of whom once took dance classes…- close to home!

"Kingdom of Heaven" (Director's Cut Roadshow Version): Films of 200513 Feb 202501:41:44

This week on the show, the boys head to Jerusalem! The random year generator spun 2005, so we chose “Kingdom of Heaven” (Directors Cut Roadshow Version) to see what Ridley Scott had in mind for his swords and sandals epic with lots of class and grace surrounding the religious tension that has disrupted the peace in Jerusalem for the last 1500 years or so… probably longer. What a cast, too!

Knock at the Cabin (2023): Beer + New Movie Discussion06 Feb 202301:15:26

This week the boys discuss M. Night Shyamalan's latest directorial feature, Knock at the Cabin (2023), which stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, and Rubert Grint. While Night had some source material to work with in Paul Tremblay's book "The Cabin at the End of the World", he changed the ending, so he was able to keep some surprise in how it's going to end. Not sure our co-host John liked that, he might have liked it more than his significant other, which is new for him. Jeff also made Dave edit some stuff out about the Chinese Spy Balloon because he ran his mouth about something he knew nothing about. However, since this movie has to do with the apocalypse, and we might have Russia and China both occupying land at the same time, maybe this movie will age well!

Additional Cast/Crew: Steve Desmond, Michael Sherman, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ben Aldridge, Abby Quinn, Kristen Cui,

Aftersun (2022) w/ Guest Tina Nikolova: New Movie Discussion30 Jan 202301:24:00

This week the boys are joined by actress Tina Nikolova to drink some whiskey and beer and discuss Aftersun (2022), writer/director (and multiple-BAFTA nominee) Charlotte Wells' personal feature film starring Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal (Normal People, The Lost Daughter, Gladiator 2) and newcomer scene-stealer Frankie Corio. The film is very Scottish, and those UK-ers must really love their lottery because The National Lottery sponsored this. Apparently they sponsor a lot. The film is about a woman reflecting back on a vacation she took with her young father when she was young, reliving moments and flashes through home videos that capture more about her father than she was able to see as a child. Powerful stuff!

Missing (2022): Positive New Movie Discussion23 Jan 202301:00:52

This week Jeff & Dave went to another fun January thriller in the cinema before talking the walk without co-host John. Missing (2022) is standalone sequel to Searching (2022) and is a "desktop" movie, or screen-based thriller. With a bigger budget and time to create another simple mystery thriller completely enriched by it's premise, Missing is the second movie in three weeks (M3GAN) to know what it is and give it to us exactly as we wanted yet in a way we somehow almost didn't know we wanted it.

Women Talking (2022): New Movie Discussion18 Jan 202301:18:45

This week we drink whiskey and beer and keep it positive as we discuss Women Talking (2022), the Critic's Choice Award-winning film that helps ignite one hell of a conversation. Based on the 2018 novel by Miriam Toews, writer/director Sarah Polley guides an incredible ensemble cast to some incredible heights. The film takes place over the course of three days and two nights in an agrarian Mennonite society where every woman- and most girls- has experienced a sexual assault and a gaslighting about it (it was a ghost, it was the devil, you made it up... infuriating). The women meet in a barn to discuss their options. Produced by Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt, amongst others, the mostly-female cast is led by Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, McDormand, Judith Ivey, Kate Hallett, Sheila McCarthy, August Winter, and Ben Wishaw.

Babylon (2022): Was It Really That Bad?12 Jan 202301:03:26

This week John, Dave, and Jeff discuss Babylon (2022), the film by writer/director Damien Chazelle that reminds us why we love going to see 3 1/2-hour long movies filled with extravagance and debauchery in the theater at Christmas. Critics have been split, audiences gave it a shrug… was it really that bad?

M3GAN (2023): New Movie Discussion + Beer - Negativity09 Jan 202300:56:03

This week John, Dave & Jeff went with the teenagers to see M3GAN, the film that apparently makes young people in the theater want to watch Twitch, check their Snaps, record the screen, vape, and yell at each other for the duration. Lots of “bathroom” breaks, too. If only M3GAN would jump out of the screen and parent THESE kids by kicking their asses.

The movie is about Allison Williams not wanting to parent her niece, so she develops a doll designed to make Mark Zuckerberg look like Winnie the Pooh. It’s not terrifying, but it’s spooky and thrilling enough with a skosh of humor to justify it’s $30mill opening weekend.

Triangle of Sadness (2022): New Movie Discussion03 Jan 202301:02:44

After discussing the upcoming summer 2023 slate of big picture releases, the boys discuss Jeff’s #2 movie of 2022, Triangle of Sadness, written and directed by Ruben Östlund (Force Majeure, The Square). This Swedish film spoken primarily in English won Östlund his second Palme d’Or and is a social satire on wealth, classism, beauty obsession, and political ideology. Co-starring Woody Harrelson as the alcoholic Marxist captain of a luxury yacht, be prepared to see the most gutturally disturbing dinner scene since Stand By Me… maybe worse.

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) + Beer + Rants about Critics20 Dec 202201:18:23

After Jeff, John, and Dave rant about how critics are doing film-goers a great disservice (Owen Gleiberman, click-baiting Avatar haters), the boys discuss Avatar: The Way of Water. Despite this movie having pretty favorable reviews among critics and incredibly favorable reviews among audiences, it pains us to be haters since we love movies so much and people aren't supporting new films the way we used to. It's led Dave to drink. He didn't get drunk because he turned 50, it's because an actual critic called Avatar: TWOF a "Smurfahontas Stodgeathon", which is horesheet. And because it eases the pain of being alive as a human, as opposed to a Na'vi. Anyway, our job is to keep it positive, and we mostly do! We get critical- with love- in the spoiler section, but crack a tinny and spend some time with us.

Empire of Light (2022): Beer + New Movie Discussion16 Dec 202201:14:47

Sam Mendes made a British nostalgia film starring Olivia Colman, so we decided to drink some beer and whiskey and talk about it! Co-starring breakout star Michael Ward, Colin Firth, and Tobey Jones, Empire of Light takes place on the English seaside in a small town with a beautifully elaborate cinema struggling for audiences. The cast works at the theater and yearns for connection in the turbulent age of Margaret Thatcher's England, 1980. Crack a tinny and listen along!

The Whale (2022): New Movie Discussion13 Dec 202201:07:32

This week Jeff, John, and Dave drink beer and discuss seeing The Whale in Dolby Cinema, with the aspect ration of a 1950s newscast, and how the film had a serious impact on us. We also discuss the blocking, the cinematography, the music, and the incredible depth written by Samuel D. Hunter, who adapted his 2012 off-Broadway play for the screenplay. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Brendan Fraser in one hell of a comeback performance portraying a 600-lb man trying to right some wrongs in his life. Assisted by some incredible performances including fall 2022 star Hong Chau (The Menu), Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins (Insidious, Jurassic World), this movie packs a punch. Crack open a beer and let's discuss.

Bones and All (2022) + Beer: Life’s Never Dully! New Movie Discussion29 Nov 202201:03:42

This week, after Jeff's audio dropouts chill the hell out, he & Dave cover for John's sorry ass to discuss Bones and All, the new Timothée Chalomet, Taylor Russell (Waves), and Luca Guadagnino film (Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria (2018)) that will make you hungrier than The Menu, more nostalgic than The Fabelmans, feeling sweeter than The Banshees of Inisherin, and more discombobulated than Crimes of the Future. All of those are movies we've covered recently, by the way. Also, this is our third Mark Rylance movie of the year after The Outfit & The Phantom of the Open! We love Mark. The Fabelmans (2022): New Movie Discussion18 Nov 202201:04:01

This week on the show the boys drink beer and gush about The Fabelmans, Stephen Spielberg's autobiographical take on how crazy it is he got rejected from USC film school. Honestly, I'm surprised they got so giddy. One of the co-hosts (John) was so touched by it he said "aww" a bunch of times the way someone does when they see a bunny. Not the Fatal Attraction bunny. The film is sweet and made brilliantly. So if you're on your way home from drinking, or are drinking alone by yourself, and want to hear some guys drink and talk about the Fabelmans, we'd be honored to share your attention. This episode is for you!

We discuss the usual things, whether Marvel should have let Ryan Coogler do his own thing and not set up any future anythings, and how incredible the fight choreographer did. The Banshees of Inisherin (2022): New Movie Discussion08 Nov 202201:16:01

This week on the pod Jeff, Dave, & John discuss The Banshees of Inisherin, writer/director Martin McDonagh's first Irish-set feature film. The Irishman won an Oscar for the 2004 short film Six Shooter, which was set in Ireland, and he wrote lots of plays set in- and of the coast of- Ireland, but In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards... It was time to return to the land of the Eire. Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan- all Irish- star in a tale of friendship, conflict, loneliness, legacy, and feckin' pub life. This movie is goddamn good. Go see it, then grab a beer and listen- or watch on YouTube- along with us!

Armageddon Time (2022): New Movie Discussion01 Nov 202201:14:40

This week John, Dave, & Jeff discuss Armageddon Time, the mostly autobiographical account of writer/director James Gray about the first few months of his 6th grade school year in 1980 Queens, NYC. We drink beer and talk about how the film discusses privilege, capitalism, family values, friendship, adversity, Anthony Hopkins, and being a mensch. We were also going to discuss The Banshees of Inisherin but John lives in LA and apparently thieves are stealing parts of cars to resell on the black market. Fcking chop shop mfers. So just Armageddon Time this week! It's a prescient film and we hope you talking about it with us on the socials!

Black Adam (2022): New Movie Discussion25 Oct 202201:12:28

39% Rotten Tomatoes score, 90% Audience score. What?? I doubt the fans really gave this a 90... pollsters are in a tough place. But our job is to try to talk positively about films, so that's what we do! We drink beer when we don't. This movie was kind of three good movie ideas in one, so listen to see how we ultimately came out on this one.

Written & directed by Todd Field (In The Bedroom, Little Children), the movie follows fictional Lydia Tár (Blanchett), one of the greatest living conductors (and composers?), and the first female conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic. The film touches on prescient thematic issues that will test most of its audience, and Blanchett rocks your socks off. Grab a sixer and hang out with us while we talk about Tár!

Amsterdam (2022): New Movie Discussion11 Oct 202201:12:07

This week on the pod Jeff, John, and Dave discuss Amsterdam, the new David O. Russell movie with an incredible cast and an important, inspired-by-true-events story filmed with little to no tone, which is potentially sinking the expensive adult dramedy feature genre. We drink beers and discuss! This week Jeff, Dave, and John discuss Blonde (2022), the new Andrew Dominik film starring Ana de Armas as Norma Jeane aka Marilyn Monroe, currently streaming on Netflix. Since the trailer was released and an NC-17 rating was revealed, skepticism arose. Press screenings led to reviewers writing scathing pieces through clenched teeth, many of which had valid points. The Great Escape (1963): Should Have Seen That By Now23 Sep 202201:02:51

John & Dave drink whiskey and beer to re-watch an American classic that Jeff hadn't seen before, The Great Escape! Directed by John Sturges, this Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner classic is long but mighty, with some incredible detail, and is grounded by a surprisingly lurid tone for a drama with serious subject matter that you never see anymore. We drink a whole lot of beer and whiskey and discuss, once Jeff finally gets done ranting about his hatred for one-word movie titles. Seriously, Dave went for a pee break and came back... he was still going and John joined in! Crazy.

Bong Joon Ho’s Memories of Murder (2003): What Else Have They Done?20 Sep 202201:14:35

This marks the first episode of our new series, What Else Have They Done? For avid Bong Joon Ho (Parasite, Okja, Snowpiercer) fans, and followers of Quentin Tarantino's infamous movie lists, this film is a legendary exemplar of the murder mystery genre, and it's currently streaming on Hulu. John's cinematography teacher and fancy film school unknowingly inspired this selection. If you haven't seen it before, holy crap, get ready to be rocked. Set in a rural South Korean town, inspired by the 1986-1991 Hwaseong Serial Murders, Song Kang-ho (Parasite) leads a team of investigators and detectives who are driven crazy as they try to solve a series of seemingly unsolvable rape-murders.

Breaking (2022): New Movie Discussion07 Sep 202200:57:54

This week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss Breaking, the new film, based on a true story, starring John Boyega as a US Marine veteran who demands the VA pay him his disability checks, which have been held up by bureaucratic crap that the US military doesn't want to confront ever, ever. Therefore, Boyega's Brian Brown-Easley makes a bold decision to make his situation known at the risk of his own life. We discussed the incredibly important content of the film as compared to the final product, which was directed by relative new-comer to feature film directing, Abi Damaris Corbin, who co-wrote the script with Kwame Kwei-Armah. Boyega also co-exec produced, and the supporting cast is led by Michael K. Williams in one of his final performances. RIP! Composed by frequent Jordan Peele collaborator Michael Abels, the film was also co-produced by Euphoria's Sam Levinson.

Today on the pod we drink beer and discuss George Miller's passion project, Three Thousand Years of Longing, a movie where an Australian filmmaker takes an Istanbul-set, pre-Islamic Arabic tale, and creates a piece of fiction for Western audience. Well, worldwide audiences, likely, and the Djinn (Idris Elba) is very romantic! Tilda Swinton is back at it, there are sweeping scenes of fantasy, stories come to life... moviegoers are divided on the picture, but we're happy we saw it on the big screen. We discuss!

Conan the Barbarian (1982): Should Have Seen That By Now feat. Mark Monstroski24 Aug 202201:38:34

This week Jeff, John, & Dave welcome Mark Monstroski of our sister podcast, The Matt And Mark Movie Podcast, which is now trending in Saudi Arabia and Portugal! Mark is a huge fan of Conan and all fun movies, really. This episode features lots of talk about practical effects vs. current CGI trends, how good story-telling on film in a sword-and-sandals romp like Conan makes any lack of realism totally work, and an understanding that while more and more movies get made every year, the bar is very high thanks to the incredible legacy left before us! We drink a lot, too. 55 buzzes! That's a record. That means Mark holds the #1 and #2 spots of most-buzzed episodes on our show. He's gotta come back for Frozen II!

Conan the Barbarian is directed by John Milius, written by John Milius and Oliver Stone, based on the novel by Robert E. Howard, and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Earl Jones, Max von Sydow, and Sandahl Bergman.

“True Romance”: Films of 1993 + “Nosferatu” “A Complete Unknown” “The Brutalist” mini-reviews21 Jan 202501:34:06

This week on the pod, after the boys catch up, honor David Lynch, and give three mini-reviews, the boys discuss 1993’s “True Romance”, the film that makes you ask, is Quentin Tarantino a better writer or director? Not that it really matters, of course, but Tony Scott directed this Tarantino/Avary script to cult superstardom. It’s Dave’s favorite QT film (maybe), and Jeff and John realize why they both liked it and think it could have been better to watch. Crazy! Mini-reviews are short, spoiler-free reactions to new films. This week we have “Nosferatu”, “A Complete Unknown”, and “The Brutalist”. Don’t want to hear us talk to each other? No worries, ass! Emily the Criminal (2022): New Movie Discussion16 Aug 202200:50:35

On the whole, this movie is fun, f the critics who think it's 'smug' and let it to a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, grab some popcorn, watch with friends and loved ones, this is a fun action comedy with dramatic elements, Kung Fu influence and fighting sequences... just listen to our ep and hear us go through it!

The Gray Man (2022): New Movie Discussion with Beer02 Aug 202201:05:10

This week John, Dave & Jeff discuss The Gray Man, one of Netflix's biggest commitments of all time with a reported $200 million budget. Based on the 2009 novel of the same name, this project originally had Brad Pitt and James Gray attached, then Chris McQuarrie and Charlize Theron, it finally came to the Russo Brothers and the duo of Ryan Gosling and a wannabe Peter Sellers-esque, mustachioed Chris Evans. The cast is fleshed out by Alfre Woodard, Ana de Armas, and Billy Bob Thornton, and the script isn't fleshed out, at all. It's dead. But the movie was very fun, lots of action... so much action... so we gave it a watch, drank beer, and talked about it!

Gattaca (1997): Should Have Seen That By Now29 Jul 202200:52:31

This week Jeff makes Dave & John re-watch 90s Sci-Fi thriller (?) Gattaca since he had never seen it! Lots of beer drinking, too. We had consumed a bunch before we even started recording. Anyway, it's on Netflix and it gave us both Jude Law and Maya Hawke, plus it's so 90s. What a premise! Ethan Hawke pretends to be Jude Law so that he can maybe go to space some day. There's something about swimming against his brother, I think the line "I never saved anything for the swim back" that, you, didn't quite have the sentimental impact as "They called me Mr. Glass!", or something. Hell of a cast. Andrew Niccol wrote/directed.

Cast/Creatives: Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, with Jude Law, Loren Dean, Ernest Borgnine, Gore Vidal, Blair Underwood, Tony Shalhoub, Maya Rudolph, and Alan Arkin, Sławomir Idziak, Michael Nyman, Danny DeVito produced through Jersey Films.

NOPE (2022): New Movie Discussion26 Jul 202200:57:28

John, Dave & Jeff saw Nope, and we gave it three (or six?) thumbs up! We start spoiler free before getting into it, we have lots of questions and get into those as well, so tune in whether you loved the movie or didn't! One thing we can agree on, that is one tough, tough way to die. There's a shot of some death that is... actually two different sequences featuring multiple deaths that are really tough ways to go. So if the tension wasn't enough to scare you, at least agree that those deaths were tough. We cover lots of ground, but it looks like Jordan Peele is back after splitting his audience with his sophomore entry, US. Seeing this in IMAX was awesome and highly recommended. And shout-out to Keke Palmer! Steals the show.

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris (2022): New Movie Discussion19 Jul 202200:59:37

This week Dave, Jeff and John went to the cinema to check out another limited release film, which hopefully will pick up some steam! It's charming. A cleaning lady with a dream, 1957 London, heads to Dior in Paris, wants to buy a frock. If you live near a local cinema, check this one out. Leslie Manville deserves her moment! Fantastic cast, charming story, great score, great 50s fashion... check it out.

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022): New Movie Discussion12 Jul 202201:14:10

This week on the pod, John, Jeff & Dave welcome guest Chris Hurte (The Mandalorian asst. editor) to discuss Thor: Love and Thunder, and where Marvel is heading in Phase 4. Thor is back! Jane is back! Loki is not, but Matt Damon is still giving him life on the Orpheum circuit! Christian Bale stars as Gorr the God Hunter, doing some strange shadow resurrecting and a lot of hours in the makeup chair, on a mission to kill Gods. And guess what? Thor... is a God! So that's a tough bind for him. Also, Jane is going by The Mighty Thor, and Thor is surprisingly OK with sharing the title. He's come a long way. And Valkyrie and Korg are back, as are some screaming goats. Fun.

ELVIS - New Movie Discussion01 Jul 202200:52:10

Baz Luhrmann, the legendary director with a unique visual and audio style.  Elvis, the king of rock and roll.  Jam those two things together and you get a movie that's so good, this episode only contains one buzz.  And it's not for the movie.  No TV's were injured in the making of this episode.  (Can't say the same for the film)

The Black Phone (2022): New Movie Discussion29 Jun 202200:55:45

This week on the pod Jeff, John & Dave say F you to the partisan, hypocritical, power hungry, regressive, contradictory Supreme Court by discussing a really fun genre film! This movie has that 70s-era slow burn horror feel to match the setting- 1978 in North Denver- and enough suspense and jump scares to possibly make this a rewatch-able flick! Fantastic cast, fantastic crew, go check this out. Screw those hoity-toity critics, who are mostly warm on the film but with a little condescension. This is definitely worth it. We discuss. It's by Joe Hill & the team that brought you Doctor Strange and Sinister. And the director liked one of Dave's tweets! So, see it.

The Phantom of the Open (2022): New Movie Discussion21 Jun 202201:09:55

Jeff, John and Dave celebrate the renaissance of golf with a giant F-U to the LIV golf tour. Just kidding! We talk about an incredibly charming movie that is more character study than sports movie, yet with all the perks of both. Mark Rylance, perhaps the greatest living English-speaking actor, paired with a luminous Sally Hawkins & antagonized by a yuppy Rhys Ifans, star in this Craig Roberts film about a crane driver (operator) in a working class coastal English town who decides to take up golf by entering The British Open in 1976. Based on a true story! Script by Simon Farnaby who co-wrote Paddington 2, so you know it’s well a jolly well done job!

Jurassic World: Dominion - New Movie Review and Discussion18 Jun 202201:11:51

A podcast episode 65 million and 29 years in the making.  And with so many glitches you'd think we're covering Gremlins.

John, Dave & Jeff ignore all the warnings, disable the fences and wander blindly into the new Jurassic World Dominion starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Isabella Sermon, Sam Neil, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, B.D. Wong and pretty much everyone else in the world.  We promise to discuss the science and then just don't cause, well, it's a movie.. what we do discuss is the interesting and bold? direction Colin Trevorrow takes this final installment (until reboot 2).
