The Pluto Lamp by Charles A. Stearns21 Oct 202600:23:46

Knucklebone Smith has spent his entire life searching for the one thing he was born to do, but nobody believes he’s good for anything. On the frozen surface of Pluto, a desperate emergency may finally give him the chance to prove everyone wrong. The Pluto Lamp by Charles A. Stearns. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

This is the Lost Sci-Fi Podcast debut for author Charles A. Stearns. He published about 25 science fiction short stories between 1953 and 1959.

He also wrote westerns and later had fiction published in The Saturday Evening Post, bringing his total to at least 37 short stories, but he never published a science fiction novel.

In 2023, Wildside Press brought his science fiction tales together in a collection devoted entirely to his work, introducing a new generation of readers to an author whose fiction had largely disappeared from view.

Published in the Fall 1954 issue of Planet Stories magazine on page 56, The Pluto Lamp by Charles A. Stearns…

Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Brent Dalgreen has risked his life trying to paint something no Earthbound artist has ever truly seen. When another painter somehow captures that impossible viewpoint, Brent follows the clue toward an answer that may carry him far beyond the world he knows. An Artist’s Life by Harry Harrison.

That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Can you see the egg all over my face? Yikes, our last episode The Holes and John Smith by Edward W. Ludwig was a mess. Sorry about that, it’s fixed now. You may have to refresh you browser or podcast app to get it to play properly.

Erik Fennel has appeared on the podcast just once before, more than four years ago, when we featured his story Madmen of Mars.

We’re always searching for science fiction stories that offer something a little out of the ordinary, and today’s story certainly fits the bill.

Today’s tale comes from the same issue of Planet Stories that featured Against the Stone Beasts by James Blish, which we enjoyed narrating not long ago. Blish’s adventure opened the magazine, and today we turn to its final selection. From page 96 of the Fall 1948 issue of Planet Stories, Synthetic Hero by Erik Fennel…

The Protector by Betsy Curtis15 Oct 202600:24:55

A race that cannot feel physical pain faces surprisingly terrifying danger. When an alien civilization begins to crumble under human cruelty, a boxing manager and his heavyweight champion must confront an enemy who knows exactly how to hurt them. The Protector by Betsy Curtis. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Today, we’re introducing another author to The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast for the very first time, Betsy Curtis.

Born Elizabeth Curtis in September, 1917, in Toledo, Ohio, her science fiction writing career began in 1950, when her first published story, Divine Right, appeared in the summer issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.

What’s interesting about Betsy Curtis is that she wasn’t a particularly prolific science fiction author. She’s credited with about 16 published science fiction stories between 1950 and 1973, and she never published a full-length novel.

But she certainly made an impression.

In 1969, her story The Steiger Effect, received a Hugo Award nomination for Best Short Story.

Curtis was also deeply involved in science fiction fandom. She was an accomplished costume designer whose creations won awards at World Science Fiction Convention masquerades. In fact, in 1959, she and her family won a group costume award for their portrayal of non-Euclidean geometry. That’s certainly one of the more unusual costume ideas I’ve come across!

The Crystal Ray by Raymond Z. Gallun12 Oct 202600:43:03

A mysterious blue crystal possesses a power that could change the course of a devastating global war. But turning a deadly discovery into humanity’s last hope will demand more from one young scientist than he ever imagined. The Crystal Ray by Raymond Z. Gallun. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Raymond Z. Gallun returns to The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast for just the second time. His first appearance was about a year and a half ago with Return of a Legend, an adventure set on Mars.

Gallun enjoyed a remarkable writing career that spanned more than 60 years, beginning in 1929. During that time, he published more than 100 short stories and became a familiar name to readers of science fiction magazines.

Today’s tale was his very first published work, written when he was just 16 years old. Even at that young age, Gallun had an extraordinary imagination, dreaming up futuristic aircraft, devastating weapons, and scientific discoveries that could change the course of a war.

Nearly a century later, we get to hear where it all began. Published in the fifth of what would become only 11 issues of Air Wonder Stories in November 1929 on page 452, The Crystal Ray by Raymond Z. Gallun…

Moxon’s Master by Ambrose Bierce10 Oct 202600:28:53

What’s fascinating about this story is that it was first published in the San Francisco Examiner on April 16, 1899. Ambrose Bierce was writing about intelligent machines more than a century before artificial intelligence became part of everyday conversation.

He was born in Ohio in 1842, fought for the Union during the Civil War, became a famous newspaper columnist and author, earning the nickname “Bitter Bierce” for his sharp wit and often merciless criticism.

There’s another fascinating detail about Bierce himself. In 1913, at the age of 71, he traveled into revolutionary Mexico and disappeared. No one knows for sure what happened to him.

The Man the Martians Made by Frank Belknap Long06 Oct 202600:52:26

On a harsh frontier world, fear spreads faster than truth when a brutal crime fractures a fragile human settlement. As suspicion turns inward, the greatest danger may come from what people choose to believe. The Man the Martians Made by Frank Belknap Long. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Every time I finish narrating a story by Frank Belknap Long, I find myself asking the same question: Why did I wait so long to narrate another one? His stories have a way of reminding me just how imaginative and entertaining vintage science fiction can be. This time, I’m not going to make that mistake. We’ll be back with another Frank Belknap Long story tomorrow!

This is the first appearance for author Robert Donald Locke on the podcast. Robert Donald Locke is something of a mystery. We know he served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, but remarkably little else about his life has survived. He began publishing science fiction in 1952 and wrote about a dozen short stories and one novel before disappearing from the genre after 1961.

Follow along with us if you have a copy of Imagination Stories of Science and Fantasy from May 1953, our story begins on page 92, Milk Run by Robert Donald Locke…

Against the Stone Beasts by James Blish29 Sep 202601:18:03

A desperate war rages between sky-borne colonists and unseen creatures that rule the stone beneath their feet. One accidental visitor from another age may decide whether an alien civilization survives or is erased from history. Against the Stone Beasts by James Blish. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Author James Blish became one of science fiction’s most respected writers and critics. He began publishing fiction in the 1940s and went on to write the celebrated Cities in Flight series, along with the Hugo Award-winning novel A Case of Conscience. Blish was also among the earliest writers to adapt Star Trek episodes into books, introducing those stories to countless readers. He died in 1975 at the age of 54, leaving behind a remarkably influential body of science fiction.

Our story was published in the Fall 1948 issue of Planet Stories, on page 74, Against the Stone Beasts by James Blish…

Murderer’s Chain by Wenzell Brown25 Sep 202600:27:14

A fortune stands just out of reach, and one beautifully crafted Martian necklace seems capable of removing the only person standing in the way. But a perfect murder requires more than the perfect weapon when someone else knows exactly what that necklace can do. Murderer’s Chain by Wenzell Brown. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Wenzell Brown was an American author and educator born in Portland, Maine, in 1911. He earned his master’s degree from Columbia University and taught in Puerto Rico and China, where he was caught up in the Second World War and interned after the fall of Hong Kong.

Those experiences inspired his 1943 book Hong Kong Aftermath. Brown went on to write crime novels, true crime, mysteries, and short fiction, winning an Edgar Award for They Died in the Chair. He also ventured into science fiction, with 1 novel and six short stories including today’s tale, published on page 10 in Fantastic Universe in March 1960, Murderer’s Chain by Wenzell Brown…

When You Giffle… by Joseph Wesley24 Sep 202600:25:57

Captain Hannah has found people who can reshape a spaceship with their minds, but their astonishing powers come with the judgment of ordinary kids. When a helpful teenager starts “giffling” with the Delta Crucis, Hannah realizes that getting home may be easier than surviving the repairs. When You Giffle… by Joseph Wesley. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

When You Giffle… appeared under author Joseph Wesley’s pseudonym, L. J. Stecher Jr. Wesley used that name for stories in Galaxy Science Fiction and Worlds of Tomorrow, while A Matter of Taste appeared in If under his real name.

And if Captain Hannah sounds familiar, there’s a reason. Wesley had already put Hannah and his ship, the Delta Crucis, through another wonderfully ridiculous adventure in An Elephant for the Prinkip and Cakewalk to Gloryanna.

This time Hannah encounters children who can swim through space, walk through solid objects, and alter matter with their minds. They’re incredibly powerful—but they’re still kids.

From the December 1963 issue of Worlds of Tomorrow on page 103, When You Giffle… by Joseph Wesley.

The Metal Giants by Edmond Hamilton23 Sep 202601:17:37

A brilliant scientist creates a mechanical mind capable of reasoning beyond its maker, then discovers it has begun building for itself. When towering machines march against entire cities, one man must find a way to destroy an intelligence that can outthink every human opponent. The Metal Giants by Edmond Hamilton. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

I’ve been searching through old issues of Weird Tales, looking for great stories for our new podcast, Weird Tales Reborn, when I came across this story by Edmond Hamilton. And with all the talk lately about artificial intelligence, robots building robots, and whether machines might someday pose a threat to humanity, I knew instantly that I had to narrate The Metal Giants.

What makes it even more fascinating is when this story was written.

Let’s go back almost 100 years to the December 1926 issue of Weird Tales. The Metal Giants was the cover story and the very first story in that issue, beginning on page 724. Now, I know—page 724 doesn’t make much sense for the first story in a magazine, but that’s the way Weird Tales numbered the pages back then.

From the December 1926 issue of Weird Tales, here is The Metal Giants by Edmond Hamilton.

Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Captain Hannah has found people who can reshape a spaceship with their minds, but their astonishing powers come with the judgment of ordinary kids. When a helpful teenager starts “giffling” with the Delta Crucis, Hannah realizes that getting home may be easier than surviving the repairs. When You Giffle… by Joseph Wesley.

Kreativity for Kats by Fritz Leiber20 Sep 202600:26:39

Gummitch knows he was meant for more than the ordinary life of a house cat, but finding an outlet for his restless imagination isn’t easy. When his baffled humans finally discover what he has been doing in the kitchen, they realize their cat may be creating something they never thought an animal could make. Kreativity For Kats by Fritz Leiber. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Fritz Leiber wrote some wonderfully zany science fiction. Nice Girl With 5 Husbands, Later Than You Think, The Last Letter, and my personal favorite among his humorously strange tales, What’s He Doing in There? Leiber had a knack for taking a ridiculous idea completely seriously—and somehow making it work.

And then there’s Gummitch.

Gummitch is a cat, but calling him a cat doesn’t really do him justice. He thinks about other dimensions, studies the strange worlds inside mirrors, remembers when he dreamed of becoming a man and traveling into space, and has some very definite ideas about what constitutes a worthwhile life. Unfortunately, his humans have absolutely no idea what’s going on inside his head.

Kreativity For Kats appeared in the April 1961 issue of Galaxy Magazine, three years after Leiber first introduced Gummitch in Space-Time for Springers. This time Gummitch is restless, frustrated, and looking for something that will put his considerable imagination to work.

What he comes up with leaves his humans scratching their heads—and might make you look a little differently at the next mess your cat makes on the floor.

Kreativity For Kats by Fritz Leiber.

The Dead Man’s Tale by Willard E. Hawkins from Weird Tales Reborn20 Sep 202601:01:20

A dead man discovers that hatred can survive the grave—and that the living may be far more vulnerable than they realize. Richard Devaney refuses to surrender the woman he loves, even if reaching her means stealing control of another man’s body. The Dead Man’s Tale by Willard E. Hawkins. Welcome to the very first episode of Weird Tales Reborn. I’m Scott Miller, and if my voice sounds familiar, you may know me as the host of The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

For more than a century, the name Weird Tales has meant strange places, supernatural mysteries, dark fantasy, horror, bizarre creatures and stories that simply refused to fit neatly into any other category. And that is exactly what Weird Tales Reborn is all about.

We’re going back to the original pages of the legendary magazine and bringing those forgotten stories to life again, one story at a time. And there is only one place we could possibly begin.

Weird Tales was introduced to the world with its March 1923 issue. Open that very first issue, turn past the opening pages, and on page 7 you arrive at the first story ever presented to readers of Weird Tales.

The Dead Man’s Tale by Willard E. Hawkins.

Hawkins was born in Fairplay, Colorado, in 1887. He was an author, editor and public speaker who founded a magazine for writers that eventually became known as The Author & Journalist. He continued writing for decades, with stories appearing in science fiction and fantasy magazines into the 1950s.

More than a hundred years ago, this was where Weird Tales began. And more than a hundred years later, it is where Weird Tales Reborn begins too.

From the March 1923 issue of Weird Tales, turn to page 7, The Dead Man’s Tale by Willard E. Hawkins…

Next on The Weird Tales Reborn Podcast, A prosperous merchant is forced into a secret brotherhood whose members hunt as beasts and obey an ancient master who can reach into their minds. When that obedience threatens the people Wladislaw loves most, escaping the pack may require him to turn its own savage nature against it. The Werewolf of Ponkert by H. Warner Munn.

Crossroads of Destiny by H. Beam Piper18 Sep 202600:33:47

A historian joins a late-night conversation about worlds where one altered event sends nations down roads no one remembers. Then a stranger leaves behind something impossible to explain, suggesting one of those other histories may be much closer than anyone imagined. Crossroads of Destiny by H. Beam Piper. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Our new podcast, Weird Tales Reborn, will be available within the next 48 hours—possibly even sooner—and we think you’re going to love it.

We’ve featured stories from Weird Tales magazine on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast before, but Weird Tales Reborn is devoted entirely to stories published in this legendary magazine, bringing its strange, fantastic, and unforgettable fiction back to life.

You can listen to the trailer and subscribe right now, so you’ll be ready when our very first episode arrives. You’ll find links to Weird Tales Reborn in the description.

Author H. Beam Piper makes his debut on the podcast today. Henry Beam Piper was born in 1904 in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and was largely self-educated. He developed a fascination with history as a boy—several of his ancestors had fought in the Civil War—and by his teens he had decided he wanted to become a writer. Around that time he discovered speculative fiction through H. G. Wells, Bram Stoker, Edgar Rice Burroughs and A. Merritt.

At 18, Piper went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona, where he worked as a laborer and later a night watchman while writing and submitting stories in his spare time. Remarkably, he spent about 26 years trying to make his first sale before John W. Campbell bought “Time and Time Again,” which appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1947. His deep knowledge of history became one of the signatures of his fiction, particularly in his Paratime stories and alternate-history tales like “Crossroads of Destiny.”

Piper went on to write more than two dozen short stories and roughly a dozen novels and book-length works, depending on how collaborations and posthumously published books are counted. His best-known books include Little Fuzzy, Space Viking, Four-Day Planet and The Cosmic Computer. Little Fuzzy was nominated for the 1963 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

Writer Jerry Pournelle recalled that Piper once told him, apparently with a straight face, that he believed he had been born in another timeline.

From Fantastic Universe in July 1959 we will find our story on page 4, Crossroads of Destiny by H. Beam Piper…

Public Enemy by Kendell Foster Crossen15 Sep 202600:23:45

A young police officer finally gets the dangerous assignment he has been craving, only to discover that catching a killer may not solve the crime. In the 32nd century, the law can hold someone responsible who never pulled a trigger. Public Enemy by Kendell Foster Crossen. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Kendell Foster Crossen was born in 1910, in Albany, Ohio, the only child of farmers Sam and Clo Crossen. He attended Rio Grande College in Ohio on a football scholarship, was an amateur boxer, and before becoming a professional writer held a variety of jobs, including carnival barker and working as an insurance investigator.

And today Kendell Foster Crossen makes his debut on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Crossen knew crime fiction from the inside. He moved to New York in 1935 and became editor of Detective Fiction Weekly in 1936. He later created the Green Lama and, writing as M. E. Chaber, created insurance investigator and occasional intelligence operative Milo March. Crossen was also one of the founders of the Mystery Writers of America.

Interestingly, Crossen was already an established professional writer before he ever tried science fiction. His first two published science fiction stories appeared in February 1951, one in Amazing Stories and the other in Thrilling Wonder Stories. He soon became a familiar name in Thrilling Wonder Stories and Startling Stories.

Crossen later said that he started writing science fiction because it gave him the opportunity to write satire and a certain kind of humor that was difficult to sell elsewhere. He described his science fiction career as relatively short, but said, “it was all fun.”

Today’s story appeared in the December 1952 issue of Dynamic Science Fiction on page 105, Public Enemy by Kendell Foster Crossen…

A very special thank you to Ryan and Kait for buying us 10 coffees and for sending this incredibly kind message:

“Thank you for The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. My wife and I listen every night. This podcast is a big part of our lives. We look forward to every new story and love diving into the archives to visit our favorite authors.

I’ve received so many thoughtful messages, and I want you to know that I read them and appreciate every one of them. Your kindness and support really do make a difference. Thank you.

Hope you are ready for an unusual story. From the April 1953 issue of the Avon Science Fiction and Fantasy Reader on page 80, Crack of Doom by Stephen Marlowe…

Coffin For Two by Winston Marks12 Sep 202600:29:54

Three years away has left Bill unprepared for an Earth where people can send perfect artificial bodies out to live for them. When an old rival threatens the woman he still loves, Bill discovers that becoming almost impossible to kill may be easier than accepting what life has become. Coffin For Two by Winston Marks. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Winston Marks was a Wisconsin-born science fiction writer who became remarkably prolific in the 1950s, publishing nearly 60 stories in just a few years. Before making his living as a writer, Marks claimed an extraordinary assortment of jobs—including aircraft pilot, soldier, sailor, bellhop, advertising man, electronics technician, political campaign manager, linoleum layer, and sugar loader—which probably gave him plenty of material for his often humorous, slightly offbeat fiction.

This is his eleventh story on our podcast. It was first published in the September 1955 publication Imaginative Tales on page 70, Coffin For Two by Winston Marks…

The Vidiot by Ib Melchior10 Sep 202600:26:18

Don Hartley has stumbled upon an invention that could make him fabulously wealthy—and give anyone who controls it the power to watch anyone, anywhere. Before he cashes in, he must decide whether some discoveries are simply too dangerous to share. The Vidiot by Ib Melchior. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Another day, another author making his debut on the podcast. Ib Melchior was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1917. His father was a celebrated opera singer who performed throughout Europe and the Americas from the 1920s through the 1940s, including appearances with the Chicago Opera, San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Near the end of his career, he also appeared in character roles in MGM musicals.

Ib spoke six languages, and his fascination with movies began when he was only 11 years old. He saw the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs, featuring Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine, whose striking appearance later helped inspire the visual creation of the Joker. Melchior walked away from the movie knowing exactly what he wanted to do—direct films.

In the late 1950s, Melchior met producer Sidney W. Pink, who told him he could direct a movie if he wrote the screenplay. There was just one problem: Melchior had never written a screenplay. But he wanted to direct, so he wrote one, and the result was The Angry Red Planet. That launched a career in science fiction movies that would last for years.

Melchior went on to write and direct science fiction films including Reptilicus, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, and The Time Travelers. He also wrote for television, including an episode of The Outer Limits.

Before his movie career took off, Melchior wrote three science fiction short stories. Later, he added two science fiction novels to a remarkably varied career that began with an 11-year-old boy sitting in a movie theater, already dreaming about getting behind the camera.

His first short story appeared in Fantastic Universe in March 1956 on page 51, The Vidiot by Ib Melchior…

Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, The people of Kana refuse to abandon their forgotten world, and Kenyon is determined to discover what could make them choose isolation over the stars. Deep beneath the strange islands, something ancient has already decided who belongs on Kana—and who will never leave. Blood Lands by Alfred Coppel

The Watchers by George H. Smith08 Sep 202600:27:33

A lone Watcher abandons the safety of his hidden post when a human survivor falls into enemy hands. Outnumbered and almost unarmed, he must turn a frozen alien moon into a weapon before the Rumi escape with their prisoner. The Watchers by George H. Smith. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

We are thankful for another 5-star review on Apple Podcasts in the US. This one comes from DanDanknick:

“A new experience I enjoyed. Other than the Psalms I’ve never listened to anyone reading anything on a podcast. A new daily work commute made me try this and the short story The Measure of a Man really caught me. Thank you for providing this!”

Thank you, DanDan!! We’re glad you found us, and we hope we can make that daily commute a little more enjoyable.

And if you’d like to wear your support for The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, we’ve got some great new merchandise with a brand-new look. You can check it out at https://lostscifi.com/merch, or just click the link in the description.

Now, on to today’s story and an author who is making his debut on the podcast.

This is our first story from George H. Smith. We’ve featured George O. Smith five times on the podcast, but despite the very similar names, the two writers were not related.

George Henry Smith was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 1922. I had never heard of him before discovering today’s story, which is one of the things I love about digging through old science fiction magazines. There are always authors waiting to be discovered.

Smith began publishing science fiction in the early 1950s and went on to write 15 novels and around 40 short stories during a career that stretched from 1953 to 1985.

Published in March 1954 in the fourth issue of Universe Science Fiction, a magazine that lasted for only 10 issues from 1953 to 1955, turn to page 118 for The Watchers by George H. Smith…

Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Don Hartley has stumbled upon an invention that could make him fabulously wealthy—and give anyone who controls it the power to watch anyone, anywhere. Killer by James E. Gunn07 Sep 202600:36:08

A fugitive believes he has found a world willing to give him everything he has lost, including someone who seems made for him. But the closer paradise comes to matching his deepest desires, the harder it becomes for him to trust what stands before him. Killer by James E. Gunn. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Author James Edwin Gunn makes his debut on the podcast today. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1923, Gunn was a science fiction writer, editor, scholar, and anthologist whose remarkable career spanned decades.

Gunn wrote about 20 novels and more than 100 short stories. One of his novels, The Immortals, became the basis for the television series The Immortal, starring Christopher George. If you loved the show as much as I did, you might be interested to know that some episodes of The Immortal can be found on YouTube.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to science fiction, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America named Gunn its 24th Grand Master in 2007. He was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2015.

Open the September 1953 issue of Rocket Stories to page 47 and you will find Killer by James E. Gunn…

Replace the Horse by Laurence M. Janifer07 Sep 202600:21:10

Arthur Holly thinks he has found the surest bet in horse racing when a brilliant scientist discovers how to make an aging nag run like a champion. The scheme works beautifully, but every race leaves their fortune riding on one very fragile piece of technology. Replace the Horse by Laurence M. Janifer. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

I want to take a moment to make a promise to everyone who listens to The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Platforms come and go. Things change, sometimes for reasons beyond our control. The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast may not always be available everywhere it is today, but as long as I’m alive, I will keep narrating these amazing stories and find a way to get them to you.

When I started this podcast, I made a promise to myself: Start and never stop.

More than 600 episodes later, that promise means even more to me than it did then.

So wherever you listen today, and wherever you may listen tomorrow, know this: The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast isn’t going anywhere.

As long as I’m here, the stories will keep coming.

Thank you for listening. Thank you for supporting the podcast. And thank you for giving me the opportunity to keep bringing these wonderful old stories back to life.

Laurence M. Janifer made his debut on the podcast almost three years ago with Curse of the Blue Man.

He was born Laurence Mark Harris in Brooklyn, New York, in 1933, and much of his early work appeared under the name Laurence M. Harris. In 1963, thirty years after his birth, he adopted Janifer, the original surname of his Polish grandfather, and from that point forward his work was published under the name Laurence M. Janifer.

Over a career that spanned nearly half a century, Janifer wrote more than 60 short stories and numerous novels, publishing under his own name as well as several pseudonyms. His first published science-fiction story appears to have been “Expatriate,” published in Cosmos in 1953, when he was only 20.

Today’s tale was published in the January 1959 issue of Fantastic on page 75, Replace the Horse by Laurence M. Janifer…

Doomsday Deferred by Murray Leinster06 Sep 202600:33:56

Deep in the Brazilian jungle, a terrified family has found a way to bargain with something no human being was meant to bargain with. When an American naturalist realizes who—or what—is demanding payment, he begins to understand how easily an army of tiny creatures could become something far more dangerous. Doomsday Deferred by Murray Leinster. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Murray Leinster is one of my favorite authors and this is the 12th story written by Leinster that we have featured on the podcast.

The Remarkable Case of Davidson’s Eyes by H. G. Wells04 Sep 202600:28:39

Sidney Davidson can hear his friends in England, feel the furniture beneath his hands, and yet his eyes insist he is somewhere impossibly far away. As the vision refuses to fade, one question becomes harder to dismiss: what if the impossible scene before him is not a dream at all? The Remarkable Case of Davidson’s Eyes by H. G. Wells. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Today’s story was first published in the Pall Mall Budget which was a weekly British magazine published in London and served as a weekly digest of articles and news summaries collected from its parent evening newspaper, the Pall Mall Gazette.

Like many of the stories written by H. G. Wells it has been reprinted more than a hundred times.

Let’s go back to Thursday March 28th, 1895 and discover, The Remarkable Case of Davidson’s Eyes by H. G. Wells…

Back Before The Moon by S. Omar Barker31 Aug 202600:29:20

This episode of the podcast is dedicated to my Mom who passed two days ago at the age of 86. Thank you Mom, for everything

A desperate father races through flooded mountain wilderness toward a village chapel, convinced only a sacred symbol can save his fever-stricken daughter before nightfall. But every mile costs him time, and the strange stranger he keeps rescuing may be the very reason he returns home too late. Back Before The Moon by S. Omar Barker. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Today’s author lived an amazing life. Squire Omar Barker was born on a small mountain ranch in Beulah, New Mexico in 1894. He was the youngest in a family of eleven children.

Barker worked as a Spanish teacher, high school principal, forest ranger, sergeant of the 502nd Engineers in France in World War I, trombone player in Doc Patterson's Cowboy Band, and newspaper correspondent. From 1924 to 1926 he was a member of the New Mexico house of representatives.

Although the story you are about to hear is his only science fiction short story he estimated he wrote more than 1,500 short stories and novellas and more than 2,000 poems. His work appeared in pulp magazines and prestigious publications too, including the Saturday Evening Post.

Perhaps his best known work was "A Cowboy's Christmas Prayer," which has been printed more than one hundred times, and recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford and Jimmy Dean. It’s not sci-fi but we will record it too in a few months and put it on our Facebook page.

He won the Western Writers of America Spur Award twice, in 1978 he was the first living author to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of Great Westerners in the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. He often signed his books with his initials and trademark brand, "Lazy SOB.” S. Omar Barker lived to be 91.

Today’s story was published in Strange Tales of Mystery and Terror in March 1932 on page 102, Back Before the Moon by S. Omar Barker…

A Difficult Time18 Aug 202600:00:44

Some of you have reached out to ask why there haven’t been any new episodes of The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast recently.

My mother is nearing the end of her life, and I am traveling to be with her and spend whatever time we have left together.

Right now, I don’t know when I’ll be able to return to producing new episodes of The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. In the meantime, there are more than 600 episodes already available, and I hope you’ll continue to explore the many stories in the collection and find something you enjoy.

Thank you for listening, and especially for your patience, kindness, and understanding during this difficult time.

Me, Myself and I by Philip Klass12 Aug 202600:39:20

One careless trip into prehistory leaves Gooseneck McCarthy facing the one man stubborn enough to ruin everything—himself. Every attempt to fix the problem creates another McCarthy, and soon nobody can agree which one belongs in the present. Me, Myself and I by Philip Klass. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Author Philip Klass returns to the podcast today. He was born Philip Klass in London, moved to Brooklyn and his stories bear the name William Tenn most of the time.

But not today. He used the name Kenneth Putnam in the Winter 1947 issue of Planet Stories magazine. The story appears right before Failure on Titan written by Robert Abernathy which was on the podcast recently. Turn to page 48, Me, Myself and I by Philip Klass…

Forever is So Long by John Jakes11 Aug 202600:29:34

Frank Ridley has been given centuries to live, but the woman he loves may have only decades. To keep her, he must ask her to accept the same extraordinary future that has already separated him from everyone else. Forever is So Long by John Jakes. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Today marks the debut of author John Jakes on the podcast. If his name sounds familiar it might be because of the TV Mini Series North and South which aired on ABC in 1985, Book 2 ran in 1986 and Book 3 in 1994. Book 1 had an All Star cast with Patrick Swayze, Kirstie Alley, David Carradine, Johnny Cash, Morgan Fairchild, Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum and Elizabeth Taylor.

Long before North and South Chicago native John Jakes wrote more than 100 science fiction short stories and novels beginning in 1950. Decades before the Kent Family Chronicles and North and South, Jakes imagined a future where humanity could dramatically extend the human lifespan—and asked what that might do to two people in love.

We will find out in the April 1953 Avon Science Fiction and Fantasy Reader on page 104, Forever is So Long by John Jakes…

Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, One careless trip into prehistory leaves Gooseneck McCarthy facing the one man stubborn enough to ruin everything—himself. Every attempt to fix the problem creates another McCarthy, and soon nobody can agree which one belongs in the present. Me, Myself and I by Philip Klass.

The Mech Fighter by Stuart McIver10 Aug 202600:28:13

A veteran Mech fighter steps into what should be another routine match, only to discover that someone has turned the arena into a death trap with thousands cheering for the bloodshed. If he survives long enough to expose the deception, he’ll have to do it against the deadliest machine he has ever faced. The Mech Fighter by Stuart McIver. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Another 5-star review on Apple Podcasts Canada. Mistercloth says, “Stories to enjoy while in space flight. I have been enjoying these wonderful stories just about every day as I relax in my capsule. Terrific narration!”

Thanks, Mistercloth! We’re grateful for your 5-star rating and wonderful review. Now, about that capsule… we have questions.

There is only one known science fiction story by Stuart McIver, and unfortunately, we haven’t been able to find any other information about him.

We discovered today’s story while searching for Pass the Oxygen by Frank Bryning. In the June 1955 issue of Fantastic Universe, just before Pass the Oxygen, on page 77, we found a story we had never encountered before.

It appears to be Stuart McIver’s only published science fiction story.

The Contact Point by Jack Sharkey09 Aug 202600:26:36

A routine first contact becomes far more complicated when two spacefaring expeditions discover they have misunderstood almost everything about one another. Just as genuine friendship begins to replace suspicion, a far more dangerous question demands an immediate answer: who actually lives in the abandoned city around them? The Contact Point by Jack Sharkey. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Thanks to our incredible listeners across Australia, The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast has climbed all the way to #3 in Science Fiction on Apple Podcasts in your country.

Every listen, every follow, every rating, and every time you tell someone about the podcast helps introduce these great vintage science fiction stories to another listener. Now there are only two spots left to climb.

Someday we will get to #1 in Australia—and when that happens, it will be because of you. Thank you, Australia. We’re incredibly grateful to have you along for the journey!

Jack Sharkey was the working name of Chicago-born author and playwright John Michael Sharkey. He wrote more than 80 plays! He entered science fiction in 1959 with “The Captain of His Soul” in Fantastic and produced roughly fifty sci-fi stories over the next several years.

Appearing in the January 1961 issue of If on page 75, The Contact Point by Jack Sharkey…

Open All Doors by Harry Harrison and Hubert Pritchard08 Aug 202600:57:49

A young researcher risks his career, his freedom, and his sanity to prove that madness can be reversed with a single injection. But when the only way to demonstrate the cure is from inside a locked ward, he must decide whether to stake his life on the very drug that put him there. Open All Doors by Harry Harrison and Hubert Pritchard. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Harry Harrison is one of my favorite authors. His spacefaring sci-fi, The Stainless Steel Rat and The Misplaced Battleship are two of my favorites. And I enjoy his robot stories too, Arm of the Law, The Robot Who Wanted to Know and others.

However, this Harry Harrison story isn’t like the others. Perhaps that’s because of his co-author Hubert Pritchard. This is the first Pritchard story on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast and there won’t be many more, if any. Hubert Pritchard wrote only two science fiction stories that were published.

So how did he and Harry Harrison team up? They were friends in high school and reconnected in New York after World War II. As the story goes Pritchard was training to be a doctor but ill health prevented him from continuing his medical education.

However, he put that education to good use in this story which was published in the February 1958 issue of Fantastic Universe magazine on page 4, Open All Doors by Harry Harrison and Hubert Pritchard…

Probability by Louis Trimble07 Aug 202600:21:50

A quiet man spends decades chasing an impossible invention, only to discover that success carries a responsibility far greater than wealth or fame. When the future reveals a disaster that has not happened yet, one ordinary bartender must decide whether he is willing to become the man history needs. Probability by Louis Trimble. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Louis Preston Trimble makes his debut on the podcast today and it’s probably the only time he will be here. Born in Seattle Washington in 1917 Trimble wrote more than 60 novels, some sci-fi, mostly westerns and mysteries but only one science fiction short story.

This is the fourth story we’ve featured from the April 1954 issue of If, following The Golden Man by Philip K. Dick, Breeder Reaction by Winston Marks, and Way of a Rebel by Walter M. Miller Jr.

We will find our story on page 99, Probability by Louis Trimble…

Pendulum by Ray Bradbury and Henry Hasse06 Aug 202600:31:52

A scientist condemned to a punishment unlike anything ever devised watches centuries slip past while every civilization around him rises, changes, and disappears. As the world transforms beyond recognition, only one question remains: what will finally bring his endless sentence to an end? Pendulum by Ray Bradbury and Henry Hasse. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

You can never have too many 5-star reviews. Never.

Every one reminds us why we do this, but some hit a little differently. This one from Apple Podcasts Canada absolutely made our day.

wethesheep-not wrote:

“Delightful. Best narrator ever! Hands down best audiobook podcast! You can’t compare this podcast with any other.”

Wow.

To everyone who has taken a minute to leave a rating or review, thank you. Those reviews help more listeners discover The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, and they remind us that these classic stories are still finding new fans all over the world.

And to wethesheep-not—thank you for such incredibly kind words. We truly appreciate you listening and taking the time to share your thoughts.

Ray Bradbury and Henry Hasse joined forces on just three stories. We featured one of them, Final Victim, about two and a half years ago.

Beyond the Wall of Sleep by H. P. Lovecraft04 Aug 202600:35:06

A dying patient speaks of impossible places no uneducated man should be able to imagine, pushing one young doctor toward an experiment that could shatter everything he believes about the sleeping mind. What answers await beyond ordinary consciousness—and what might still be searching the night sky when the experiment is over? Beyond the Wall of Sleep by H. P. Lovecraft. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

We spend a lot of time thinking about the stories, the pacing, and giving each character a distinct voice. So this review on Apple Podcasts US from “California listeners” really hit home:

“Perfectly narrated science fiction stories! Wonderful range of voices that bring each character to life, narrator with clear enunciation and pleasant resonance.”

Thanks California!! It’s gratifying to know those details are noticed. Thank you for listening!

We hadn’t planned to deliver any H. P. Lovecraft stories on the podcast, but you’ve made your voices heard. The requests just keep coming, so we’re happy to bring you more of the Lovecraft tales you’ve been asking for.

This story was first published in the amateur publication Pine Cones in October 1919 just a few months after it was written. Almost 20 years later it appeared in the March 1938 issue of Weird Tales magazine on page 331, Beyond the Wall of Sleep by H. P. Lovecraft…

Death of a Mutant by Charles V. De Vet03 Aug 202600:32:59

A hunted young mutant leaves a trail of unexplained deaths, yet every encounter raises a troubling question about what people think they have witnessed. As one sheriff searches for the truth, he must decide whether he is chasing a remorseless killer—or someone no one has ever truly understood. Death of a Mutant by Charles V. De Vet. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Charles V. De Vet made his debut on the podcast just about a week ago. It’s not uncommon for us to feature another story from a new author soon after their first appearance, especially when I finish that first story wanting to read more. That’s exactly what happened with De Vet. I enjoyed his writing so much that I couldn’t wait to bring you another of his thought-provoking science fiction stories.

Let’s go back in time to February 1957 in only the second issue of Super-Science Fiction on page 112, Death of a Mutant by Charles V. De Vet…

The Price of Eggs by Randall Garrett02 Aug 202601:02:04

A young diplomat trapped inside an alien royal marriage learns that custom can become a death sentence when an heir fails to appear. Lieutenant Newhouse has only days to outmaneuver a suspicious queen before an Earthman disappears forever inside the laws of Oassi. The Price of Eggs by Randall Garrett. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

There are some authors whose stories seem to get better every time I revisit them, and Randall Garrett is definitely one of those. The more of his work I narrate, the more I appreciate his knack for blending clever ideas, sharp dialogue, and just the right amount of humor into unforgettable science fiction.

I’m not going to spoil it but there is humor near the end that goes by fast and it took a few takes to narrate it without laughing.

Todays story was published in Fantastic Science Fiction Stories in December 1959. We have now narrated three stories from that issue, The Man Who Was Pale by Jack Sharkey, I, Gardener by Allen K. Lang and on page 96, The Price of Eggs by Randall Garrett…

Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A hunted young mutant leaves a trail of unexplained deaths, yet every encounter raises a troubling question about what people think they have witnessed. As one sheriff searches for the truth, he must decide whether he is chasing a remorseless killer—or someone no one has ever truly understood. Death of a Mutant by Charles V. De Vet

Castaways Of Space by Robert Silverberg26 Jul 202600:42:51

A washed-up Galaxy Patrol lieutenant hits a jungle world expecting a quick recovery—then learns the kidnapper has turned the crash into a crown. To get the Earthgirl home, he’ll need a move the natives won’t forgive and a choice he may not survive. Castaways Of Space by Robert Silverberg. That’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Robert Silverberg is one of our absolute favorites here on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. I’m not even sure how many of his stories we’ve featured so far, but it’s probably getting close to twenty. The really exciting part is that we’ve identified more than fifty Robert Silverberg stories that are now in the public domain. That means there are plenty more adventures waiting for us, and we won’t be running out of Silverberg stories anytime soon.

The October 1958 issue of Super-Science Fiction featured three stories by Robert Silverberg, although you wouldn’t know it just by looking at the bylines. Two of those stories even made the cover. The Fight with the Gorgon appeared under Silverberg’s own name, while The Untouchables was credited to Calvin M. Knox. And today’s story, Castaways Of Space, was published under yet another Silverberg pseudonym, Dan Malcolm. Of course, we know who really wrote all three. Let’s turn to page 76, Castaways Of Space by Robert Silverberg…
