Goblin Archives - Liminal Horror10 Sep 202200:36:24

Liminal Horror is a modern horror tabletop RPG. It started a year and a half ago as a hack of the game Cairn, and since then its ecosystem has significantly grown. It has been published in print, counts two official modules, and is supported by a vibrant community.

In this episode we'll talk about Goblin Archives' journey as a game designer, how to write horror, crowdfunding using itch.io, growing supported by the community and giving back to it, and the two first official modules for the game: The Mall inspired by John Carpenter's 1982 movie The Thing, and The Bureau an adventure of corporate horror.

TTRPG IRL Community copies - with Sean Patrick Cain - Yochai Gal - Caverns of Heresy07 Jan 202200:30:03

This is the second episode of a three part mini series on TTRPG zines, the physical objects, we love, make, read and use to play role playing games. The first one is and interview with Leo from L.F. OSR, maker and publisher of limited editions of bespoke RPG zines.

If you play RPGs you're probably familiar with the concept. Community copies are free copies of RPG games or adventures, people can download from the internet. It's a way for designers and publishers to support members of the community who can't afford for whatever reason to buy a game.

In this episode, we are going to take a closer look at what some people in the community start to call IRL community copies. As in, in real life, community copies. These are physical copies of zines distributed for free in various places, mainly in Little Free Libraries. You know, these boxes one can find sometimes by the side of the road where people drop books and even other supplies. We will accompany three indie game designers, Sean Patrick Cain, Yochai Gal, and Caverns of Heresy, while they print, prepare, and distribute some in real life community copies.

L.F. OSR - publishing RPG zines16 Dec 202100:26:23

Leo is very active in the RPG scene, particularly on the OSR side of it. He writes, makes art, he even just has released a dungeon synth album called Lost Fellow. But Leo also makes zines, like in crafting and publishing them, with his printing shop/publishing house called L.F. OSR. Their publications are quite unique in the scene, one hundred percent handmade, bespoke and special editions of indie zines.

In this episode we talk about hacking printers, hand stamping zines, bone folders, being a nerdy craftsman, and the future of the indie RPG zines in these uncertain times of paper shortage and supply chain disruption.

And if you stick around until the end of this bonus episode, you'll hear some of the sounds I'm editing for the series.

Ben Milton - The Waking of Willowby Hall07 Apr 202100:29:52

Ben Milton is behind the popular YouTube channel Questing Beast where he does reviews and flip throughs of RPGs and OSR books and zines. Watching his reviews, I've been struck by the constant attention he has for the layout or the design choices of the books, and how these choices might affect the playing experience. Ben is the author of Maze Rats and Knave, two rules-light RPGs, that had a great influence on the OSR scene. Ben recently published the Waking of WIllowby Hall, a fairy-tale med fan adventure in a Haunted Manor.

In this episode, we talk about mathematician Edward Tufte, teaching Game Mastering to kids, an angry cloud giant, Ben's obsession with rules, and how a childhood bool can affect game design choices.

Pelle Nilsson & Johan Nohr - Mörk Borg23 Nov 202200:39:18

Mörk Borg is a Swedish tabletop role-playing game by Pelle Nilsson & Johan Nohr with a strong pitch-black apocalyptic fantasy vibe. The fantasy setting features a dying world, where all is dark and gloomy, even the characters you play. The book itself has a unique visual style, wild and colorful reminiscent of the 80s Punk-Rock zine scene and of Doom Metal music.

In this interview we talk about the creative strategies of the two designers, the Swedish alternative to Dungeons and Dragons, Nostradamus Prophecies, historical vampires, an incredible set of Character Generators, font sourcing and how to succeed at creating a masterful visual style.

Jesse Ross, Trophy Dark27 Mar 202500:42:07

This episode's guest is Jesse Ross, designer of Trophy Dark. Trophy Dark is a narrative game about doomed treasure hunters venturing into a forest that doesn't want them there.

I'm a late discoverer of Trophy Dark; I read it just a few months ago, and it radically changed the way I see and play RPGs. The book delivers such a strong and consistent gameplay experience with a very simple mechanical architecture. You know I like horror RPGs, and Trophy Dark, in a way, is a medieval fantasy forest horror game. It's unique and beautifully designed, with a mesmerizing quality and a set of mechanics that allow for amazing gameplay to emerge.

In this episode, we'll talk about a dragonfly invasion, things Jesse sees in the dark, coping with hubris, and how to build a truly meaningful collaborative gameplay experience.

Adam STATION, I don't belong here30 Apr 202500:43:08

Today The Lost Bay Podcast’s guest is Adam STATION.

Adam is best known for designing modern horror RPGs, with a surreal twist. Their games and modules have two unique features. First they are heavily procedural, based mostly on tables and nested tables. Second they are inspired by modern and contemporary music, to the point some of them are actually partially sampled from song lyrics and titles.

Today we’ll be talking about “I dont belong here”, a modern horror module for Liminal Horror, inspired by Radiohead music and that is crowdfunding on Backerkit right now.

We’ll also do something a bit different, we’ll roll on some of Adam’s wild tables!

While you listen to the episode take a moment to check the backerkit page https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/stations/i-don-t-belong-here-modern-horror-inspired-by-radiohead
