It's time. Josh and Jack dive deep on one of the most significant American directors of all time. Steven Spielberg has made some of our all time favorite movies and has done so for generations. He's still as prolific as ever and has a new movie coming out on June 12th, Disclosure Day. We thought it was as good a time as any to celebrate one of our favorite directors and a true titan in the industry.

On this episode, Jack and Josh try a new format, pitting two movies against each other analytically. While Tenet and Babylon might differ in tone, themes, even in genre, their reception seems similarly polarizing. We're doing our best to find out why, today, and to see if we can walk away naming one the better movie.

The oft mentioned first installment of Longlist Jeopardy is finally here. Josh and Jack faced off to see who would be the victor in this epic battle. And they had some skin in the game as well: Whoever prevails will receive a "one for me" episode in the near future and have full creative control over its content.

This one's all about the forgotten nautical masterpiece from the early 2000s. Jack and Josh muse about what could have been with this franchise that never was, discuss the fascinating career of Russell Crowe, and  debate fictional captains. It's been one year since Josh and Jack started The Longlist. We'd like to thank everyone who has participated, actively or passively, and thank everyone who has supported us in any way. For this episode, we've created a most prestigious fictional hall of fame to elect movies in various categories that we've discussed over this past year. We're embarking on a larger project with this episode, attempting to tackle the genre of Science Fiction in movies. This is part 1 of that exercise with the sub topic of focusing on Post Apocalyptic and Dystopian movies. Josh and Jack are joined by their good friend, Jason Slavin, who has a strong background in this department. It's impossible to cover a genre completely, but we tried our best and had a blast.

For our 50th episode Jack and Josh thought of something fun: they each brought a list, unknown to there counterpart, with 50 entries on said list. It was a lot of fun to record. We're baring our soul on this podcast and revealing some big time resume gaps in our movie watching cannon. After Greta Gerwig's masterpiece has repeatedly and accidentally come up in several podcast episodes in recent months, Josh and Jack decided to break down the movie in full once and for all and move on. In honor of his new movie, Project Hail Mary, we decided to do an episode centered around one of our collective favorite movie stars, Ryan Gosling. What a career, and it feels like he's still on the upward trajectory. He really can do it all, action, comedy, romance, drama, indie, blockbuster, you name it. Jack and Josh had a lot of fun breaking down his career with a variety of different lists. Ryan Gosling has something for everyone.

We're having fun today. Jack and Josh recap the 2026 Oscars ceremony, with some awards, some speeches, some Conan and everything else. Then in the second half of the episode, the guys get weird and deliver a bunch of lists of which the other is not aware. It's a true wild card in the second half. This week is all about our favorite vibey heist trilogy: Ocean's 11, 12 and 13. Josh and Jack have different opinions about which is the superior movie but agree all three are super fun and incredibly rewatchable. The penguins are trending! If you've missed it there is a penguin scene in this documentary by Werner Herzog that has been making its way around the interenet recently, leading to endless memes and content. We decided to strike while the iron was hot and do a whole episode on this awesome hang out nature documentary. Plus it's Jack's 19th favorite film of all time, so he didn't mind. In honor of their new movie, The Rip, we're doing an episode on everyone's favorite Hollywood besties, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. These two honestly warrant their own individual episodes, but Josh and Jack thought it would be fun to tackle their career as a partnership first. It's pretty unique that two friends from Massachusetts not only both broke into the movie industry in a big way, but have managed to have such successful careers. Music is a quintessential part of the movie experience, both from the filmmaking side and the audience side. When to use it, how to use it and everything in between. The way movies utilize music has a lasting impact on the way we as viewer consume and interact with them. We give some take on the Oscars (at the time of recording) and have some more personally oriented top fives for you leading up to our rankings of the films in our respective birth years, 1985 and 1991. We have a bit of a different episode today on The Longlist. Jack and Josh try to make sense of all the different angles of the Warner Bros. sale. It's an impossible task, but they gave it the old college try. At the end of the episode they touch on a few minor news stories around the world of Hollywood.

On a final note, a few hours after recording, the news of the deaths of both Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner broke. What a tragic loss that shook the world of movies to it's core. We're sure to do a Rob Reiner episode down the line, but we didn't talk about it much in this podcast because it happened after recording. Thoughts, love and prayers go out to the family and loved ones.

In this episode, Jack and Josh are joined by their good friend, Austin Thompson to discuss one of the wildest and most endearing comedies of the 90s, Dumb and Dumber. Remember when studios use to make comedies? Like, all the time? It doesn't seem to happen as much anymore, but the mid 90s were ripe with comedies and this one is one of the best. And Jim Carrey hit the scene like a wildfire and took over Hollywood for a few years. We had a lot of fun breaking down this movie and we hope you have fun listening.

It's the ROMANTIC COMEDY DRAFT!!! For this episode, Josh and Jack are joined by their respective significant others, Jack's fiance, Alex and Josh's wife, Rebecca. For the draft, the goal is to create your ideal romantic comedy using other aspects of iconic rom coms. We had 9 categories to fill out and four drafters, so that totaled 36 movies drafted in all. We had a bunch of fun talking about all these movies and left some really big ones un-drafted as well. Enjoy!

This week Josh's wife, Rebecca joins Jack and Josh to talk about one of the most beloved and endearing movies of all time, Casablanca. We ranked a bunch of lists pertaining to the movie but we also use the movie as inspiration for other lists to highlight some other movies. We love talking old Hollywood and this film is possibly the best representation of that time. It's a timeless classic and we had a blast breaking it down.

We're taking a stab at our first draft here at The Longlist. The topic of the draft is crime movies and or goal is to create our ideal crime movie by selecting other elements from films in the genre. We're doing something special for our 25th episode! Jack and I have always liked ranking movies, hence the structure of the podcast, and we decided to put it all out there and give our top 25 favorite movies of all time. It was a long and arduous journey, but we made it and we're happy with our lists. If you ask us next week, the list might change, but at some point we just need to make some decisions. In this episode, we are taking stock of the year so far. We do our first Oscar race check in, we cover some of the movies that are getting buzz from various film festivals and put our finger on the pulse that is the movie year of 2025, at least to this point. The bulk of the episode is us discussing our favorite five movies of 2025 to this point. We HIGHLY expect our end of the year list to look very differently as there are a TON of movies yet to come out. But this is our near halfway point check in. Last week brothers Josh and Jack broke down one of the greatest American films of all time. Arguably its closest competitor for that title is its sequel, which is crazy unto itself. The Godfather Part 2 is also considered one of the greatest movies ever made. In this episode, we break down the incredible acting performances, talk about the distinct look and feel, analyze the parallels between the two films and rank all sorts of categories ranging from our favorite scenes to the characters we would LEAST like to get a beer with.
