Dear Listener | Ira Blacker: A Letter About Family, Survival & Rock & Roll10 sept. 202600:12:30

There are some stories that take a lifetime to tell.

In this episode of The Letterbox Podcast, Ira Blacker shares a deeply personal letter about his childhood, family, survival and the experiences that shaped the man he became.

Ira’s life would eventually take him into the heart of the rock and roll business. After beginning his career in the music industry in the 1960s, he co-founded American Talent International, one of the major rock and roll agencies of its time. His career brought him into the world of artists including Rod Stewart, The Eagles, ZZ Top, Deep Purple, Earth, Wind & Fire, KISS, Rush and Rory Gallagher, among many others.

But this letter takes us much further back — before the music industry, the famous names and the extraordinary career — to the childhood and family experiences that shaped Ira’s life.

It is an honest and deeply personal reflection on family, survival, resilience, and the things we carry with us long after we think we’ve left them behind.

Ira’s remarkable life in the music business is also explored in his memoir, Once A King, Now A Prince, a rock and roll memoir about family, survival and his extraordinary journey from childhood to the centre of rock and roll history.

A huge thank you to Ira for trusting The Letterbox Podcast with his story and his words. ❤️

Dear Mama | Letter 7: A Family’s NICU story 07 sept. 202600:11:23

Dear Mama.

Our final letter in this NICU Awareness Month mini series is a letter to the mother who kept showing up.

To the mum who learnt the medications, the appointments and the language of the hospital. Who held her baby through blood draws, wires and procedures, while trying to keep some sense of normality for her other child. Who was told she was strong and resilient, when really, she was simply doing what her babies needed her to do.

It’s a letter about what happens when the immediate crisis is over, but the feelings haven’t gone anywhere. About the things you hold inside while you keep everyone else safe. And about remembering that you don’t have to be the strong one all the time.

Thank you to Katherine @drkatherinewrites for sharing these letters with us, and for all the time, thought and honesty she has put into making this series happen.

And thank you to everyone who has listened, shared and helped these stories reach the people who needed to hear them.

This mini series may be coming to an end, but NICU Awareness Month continues throughout September. There is support available for families going through a NICU experience.

And if you’re going through, or have been through, NICU, we want you to know: you are not alone.

If you have a letter you need to write, the Letterbox is open. Send yours to theletterboxpodcast@outlook.com. You can write anonymously, and your story might help someone else feel less alone.

Dear Medical Parents| Letter 6: A Family’s NICU Story & Tiny Tickers UK Blog Post 06 sept. 202600:21:21

To Medical Parents | NICU Awareness Week — Letter Six

For the sixth letter in our NICU Awareness Week series, Dr Katherine shares a letter to the parents living through the unimaginable: NICU and PICU parents, heart parents, and families whose children have been seriously ill.

Before sharing her original piece for Tiny Tickers, Katherine writes directly to other medical parents about fear, guilt, exhaustion, love, uncertainty and the complicated reality of feeling incredibly lucky and incredibly sad at the same time.

The letter that follows, From My Heart to Yours: Nobody Prepared Us For This, was originally written for Tiny Tickers and reflects on the emotional impact of congenital heart disease, life in hospital, siblings, relationships, survival mode and what happens after the medical crisis.

Thank you to Tiny Tickers for allowing us to share Katherine’s blog as part of this series. Tiny Tickers supports babies with serious heart conditions and their families across the UK. (Tiny Tickers)

Written and read by @drkatherinewrites.

If this letter resonates with you, share it with another NICU, PICU or heart parent who might need to hear that they are not alone.

Dear Nurses| Letter 5: A Family’s NICU story 05 sept. 202600:08:59

When you can’t hold your own baby, sometimes the people caring for them become the people who make it possible for you to step away, breathe, eat and sleep.

In the fifth letter of The Letterbox Podcast’s NICU Awareness Month series, @drkatherinewrites writes a heartfelt thank you to Susie, the PICU nurses and all the healthcare staff who cared for her daughter through an incredibly difficult time.

Although this is Katherine’s story, the gratitude in this letter will be familiar to so many people who have relied on healthcare workers to care for them, their children, their parents, their partners or someone they love.

So this one is also a thank you to all healthcare workers. For the big things, the tiny things, and the care you give that families and patients may carry with them for years.

Follow The Letterbox Podcast, share this episode with someone who might need it, or write your own letter and send it to theletterboxpodcast@outlook.com.

Because sometimes the things we never got to say are the things worth saying.

Dear Grandparents | Letter 4: A family’s NICU story 04 sept. 202600:17:34

Letter 4 in the NICU awareness month mini series.

A Letter About Family, Serious Childhood Illness & The People Who Show Up.

Katherine writes a heartfelt letter to the grandparents who supported her family through 18 months of serious childhood illness, hospital stays and her daughter’s heart surgery.

She reflects on the complicated emotions of medical parenting, the helplessness of watching your child suffer, and the grandparents who quietly carry their own fear while supporting their children and grandchildren.

A moving letter about family, love, grandparents, gratitude and the people who show up when you need them most.

Dear Husband | Letter 3: A Family’s NICU story 03 sept. 202600:07:08

In the third letter of our NICU Awareness Month mini-series, Katherine (@drkatherwrites) writes to her husband about the experience of watching their daughter spend time in NICU with a congenital heart condition.

She writes about the fear of seeing your tiny baby so unwell, the impact of medical trauma on a family, and the way an experience neither parent could have imagined changed their marriage.

But most of all, this is a letter of gratitude — to the person beside you when everything feels frightening and uncertain. To the husband who became a teammate, a source of strength and an unwavering support for their children and for Katherine.

Katherine is a Clinical Psychologist, writer and mum, bringing both professional insight and lived experience to her writing about medical parenting.

A letter about NICU, congenital heart disease, parenthood, marriage, medical trauma and the love that carries families through difficult times.

A Letter To Our Darling Son | Letter 2: A Family’s NICU Story 02 sept. 202600:10:04

In the second letter of The Letterbox Podcast’s seven-part NICU Awareness Month series, Katherine writes to her firstborn son.

He was just two and a half when his baby sister was born and unexpectedly became seriously ill. Instead of the arrival they had carefully planned, Katherine and her husband found themselves spending weeks in hospital, while their little boy was cared for at home, mostly by his grandparents.

This is a letter about the siblings who are sometimes left on the outside when a baby needs intensive medical care. About the guilt of missing milestone moments, the worry that he might feel forgotten, and the impossible reality of trying to be in two places at once.

But most of all, it is a letter to make sure her son knows that he was never second.

Katherine reflects on the eight weeks she missed of his childhood, including one seemingly ordinary afternoon splashing in puddles — and how much that ordinary half hour meant after being away from him for so long.

Written by Katherine — @drkatherinewrites

This is the second of seven letters sharing one family’s experience of NICU and serious childhood illness.

September is NICU Awareness Month, and over the next seven days, The Letterbox Podcast is sharing seven letters from one family’s experience of neonatal care.

This first letter is written by Katherine, an NHS and private practice Clinical Psychologist, writer and mum of two, to her daughter — her baby.

Her daughter was diagnosed with serious congenital heart disease just hours after her emergency birth. She had stopped growing during pregnancy, was born at a low birth weight and required significant support after birth, before being readmitted to a High Dependency Unit at just two weeks old.

Through seven letters, Katherine reflects on the people, experiences and emotions that shaped her family’s journey through NICU and hospital care.

This first letter is to the person at the heart of it all: her daughter.

Dear Ali | A Nostalgic Letter About Teenage Freedom20 aoĂťt 202600:04:54

In this short but beautifully nostalgic letter, ThePeculiarPoet looks back on being 17, sneaking into a music festival with friends and experiencing the kind of carefree teenage freedom that feels endless when you’re young.

Through memories of neon lights, glowsticks, music drifting through the woods and nights that seemed to exist outside the real world, this letter captures a feeling many of us recognise — looking back on a moment in our youth and wishing we could experience that freedom just one more time.

A reminder that not every letter needs to be long, profound or life-changing. Sometimes a letter can simply hold onto a memory, a feeling or a moment you don’t want to forget.

And that’s exactly what The Letterbox Podcast is for. Any letter is welcome.

Dear Laura | Losing 25 Stone & Learning to Love Myself12 aoĂťt 202600:08:53

At 25 years old, Laura (@laurabudreviciene ) was told she might not live to see 30.

Now, as she prepares to celebrate her 30th birthday, she’s the healthiest and happiest she’s ever been. Over five years, she’s lost almost 25 stone and has recently undergone life-changing skin removal surgery—a milestone that marks just one chapter in a much bigger story.

Because this isn’t really a story about weight loss.

It’s a letter to the younger version of herself who believed life wouldn’t begin until she was thinner. A letter about discovering that confidence isn’t found on the scales, happiness isn’t measured by a goal weight, and the greatest transformation wasn’t physical at all—it was learning to believe she was enough.

In this heartfelt episode of The Letterbox Podcast, Laura reflects on resilience, motherhood, marriage, mental health, body image, self-worth and the unexpected ways one decision can change the trajectory of an entire life.

If you’ve ever felt like your life was on hold while waiting to become someone else, this letter is for you.

What happens when you leave someone who hasn’t done anything wrong?

Today’s anonymous letter is about ending a relationship with someone you still love. A partner who is kind, supportive, and your best friend — but a future together no longer feels like the future you want.

As conversations turn towards buying a house, getting married, settling down, and starting a family, she begins to imagine a different life. The hardest part? There is no betrayal, no anger, and no obvious reason to walk away.

This is a letter about relationship doubts, the fear of hurting someone you love, and the painful realisation that sometimes love alone isn’t enough. It explores what it feels like to question a relationship, decide whether to stay or leave, and make a heartbreaking choice when nobody is the villain.

Dear Future Child | Healing After Heartbreak, Hope & Becoming a Parent09 juil. 202600:07:49

What do you say to someone you may never meet, but have loved for years?

In the final chapter of Ang’s three-part story, she writes a letter to her future child.

After heartbreak, betrayal, and letting go of the life she thought she was building, Ang chooses to write not from grief, but from hope.

She reflects on the kind of love she wants to give, the home she hopes to create, and the person she is becoming long before she ever becomes a mother.

This isn’t just a letter about motherhood.

It’s a letter about healing.

About breaking cycles.

About learning that love should feel safe, honest, and freely given.

And about believing that even if life doesn’t unfold the way we imagined, it can still become something beautiful.

Whether you’re longing for a child, healing from your past, or simply learning to trust what’s next, Ang’s words are a gentle reminder that our greatest hopes often begin shaping us long before they become reality.

If you’ve been following Ang’s story this week, thank you for being here. And if this is your first episode of The Letterbox Podcast, welcome.

If you have a letter you’ve written—a goodbye, a thank you, a confession, or words you’ve never had the chance to say—I would love to read it.

Dear Ang | Finding Yourself Again After Heartbreak and Losing the Future You Imagined08 juil. 202600:08:58

Dear Ang | Finding Yourself Again After Heartbreak & Starting Over

A powerful letter about healing after heartbreak, rediscovering yourself, and rebuilding your life after losing the future you thought you would have.

In this episode of The Letterbox Podcast, Ang shares the second letter in her three-part story.

After believing her future was already written — a marriage, a home, children, and the life she imagined building — everything changed.

But this letter is not about what she lost.

It’s about what she found.

“Dear Ang” is a letter written to herself during a season of heartbreak, uncertainty, and transformation. A reminder that sometimes what feels like life taking something away is actually life making space for something new.

Ang reflects on questioning her identity, her dreams, her worth, and her direction — before discovering a new version of herself.

A version who chooses:

* adventure over fear

* possibility over comfort

* self-trust over uncertainty

This episode explores:

• healing after heartbreak

• finding yourself after losing a relationship

• rebuilding your confidence and identity

• starting a new chapter in life

• learning to trust yourself again

• embracing change and uncertainty

Ang shares what it feels like to grieve the life you thought you would have while slowly falling in love with the life unfolding in front of you.

Because sometimes endings are not endings.

Sometimes they are invitations disguised as heartbreak.

Your future is not gone.

It may simply be waiting for you to become brave enough to meet it.

Thank you again to Ang @seen_and_safe_collective, for a beautifully honest & inspiring letter.

Dear Him | A Letter About Love, Betrayal & Letting Go07 juil. 202600:08:13

What happens when the person you thought was your forever becomes the person you have to let go of?

In this emotional episode of The Letterbox Podcast, Ang shares the letter she wrote after discovering that the relationship she believed she was living wasn’t the reality she was facing.

At 41 years old, Ang thought she had found the person she would marry. They spoke about marriage, children, growing old together, and all the ordinary moments that make up a life.

But after discovering repeated betrayals and secrets, Ang found herself grieving more than a relationship.

She was grieving the future she had already imagined.

“Dear Him” is a letter about loving someone deeply, facing broken trust, and finding your way back to yourself.

A story about:

• healing after relationship betrayal

• letting go of someone you still love

• grieving the life you thought you would have

• rebuilding your identity after heartbreak

To Every Politician Past and Present| A Carers Plea For Support 22 juin 202600:09:25

In this episode of The Letterbox Podcast, Mary writes a powerful open letter to politicians past and present who she believes have ignored the plight of unpaid carers in the UK.

Mary shares her lived experience as the full-time carer for her son Daniel, who suffered severe brain damage in infancy following complications from a childhood cancer diagnosis. For over 44 years, she has provided round-the-clock care — totalling around 138 hours every week — alongside the emotional, physical, and financial pressures that come with lifelong caregiving.

She speaks candidly about Carer’s Allowance, currently £86.45 per week, which equates to approximately 63p an hour for her care, and the strict earnings threshold that penalises carers who try to supplement their income. Mary also highlights the impact of policy changes such as carers losing their allowance upon reaching state pension age, despite continuing their caring responsibilities.

This episode explores the reality of unpaid carers in the UK, the hidden labour that supports families and the wider health and social care system, and the ongoing debate around welfare support, disability care, and government policy.

A deeply personal letter that raises urgent questions about how society values care, disability support, and the millions of unpaid carers who quietly hold everything together.

Dear Brain Injury | A Wife’s Letter After Her Husband’s Traumatic Brain Injury 19 juin 202600:09:09

In this episode of The Letterbox Podcast, an anonymous writer shares a deeply personal letter about her husband’s brain injury and the stranger who came to live with them after his accident.

She writes about the shock of what happened, the hospital journey, and the weeks that followed, when everything familiar was suddenly changed. She describes the moment life split into before and after, and what it means to begin again in a world that no longer looks the same.

Her hope in sharing this letter is that others in a similar situation may come to understand that the stranger is not the person standing in front of them, but the injury that happened to them—a powerful message of hope for anyone walking a similar path.

At its heart, this letter is about love—love that remains even when everything else shifts. It is about determination in the face of change, and the strength it takes to keep going, together, through something neither of them chose.

She also reflects on how they continue to live alongside the injury—some days with laughter, some days with grief—but always with a commitment to keep moving forward, and to keep choosing each other in a life that has been permanently altered.

If this episode resonated with you, please follow The Letterbox Podcast, share it with someone who might need it, and leave a review to help these stories reach others who may feel less alone.

To the Children of Britain | A WWII Letter from King George VI (1946)08 juin 202600:06:13

On 8 June 1946, millions of British schoolchildren received a message from King George VI as part of Britain’s Victory Celebrations following the Second World War.

One of those children was a ten-year-old girl.

Today, eighty years later to the day, she is ninety years old—and she still has the letter.

In this special episode of The Letterbox Podcast, we share a remarkable piece of post-war British history preserved alongside wartime letters, ration books and memories of life during World War II.

Though the King’s message is brief, it captures an extraordinary moment in time. In just a few sentences, it reflects a nation emerging from war, acknowledges the children who had lived through it, and looks towards the future they would help shape.

This episode explores childhood during WWII, post-war Britain, family history, remembrance, resilience, and the power of letters to connect us across generations.

To My Hyperemesis | A Mother’s Letter About Severe Pregnancy Sickness29 mai 202600:11:25

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is so much more than “morning sickness.”

In this deeply personal letter, a mother opens up about the reality of surviving pregnancy while feeling completely consumed by it — the isolation, the fear, the guilt, the grief, and the quiet trauma so many women carry in silence.

This is a conversation for the women who loved their baby deeply, but hated what pregnancy was doing to their body.

For the women who felt invisible inside their suffering.

For the women who were told to try crackers and ginger biscuits while barely surviving the day.

Because two things can exist at once:

gratitude and despair,

love and trauma,

motherhood and grief.

If you’ve ever felt alone in your experience with hyperemesis, this episode is for you.

And if you’ve never understood the true weight of HG before, this conversation might change that.

Please listen gently and be kind ❤️

Dear Teenage Me | Life Advice To Your Younger Self22 mai 202600:08:33

A heartfelt, reflective letter from your 30s to your teenage self, exploring nostalgia, identity, growing up, and the strange reality of still feeling like “younger you” on the inside.

‘Dear Teenage Me’ is an honest chat from our listener to her younger self filled with friendships, MSN chats, Bebo Top Friends drama, awkward crushes, nights out, and the emotional intensity of adolescence.

It reflects on the shift into adulthood: learning how to manage bills and responsibilities, realising life doesn’t follow a clear timeline, and discovering that resilience is often built through doing hard, unglamorous things you don’t always want to do. It also touches on nostalgia, the importance of having hobbies and identity outside of work and screens, and the quiet challenges of modern life in an “always online” world.

At its core, this episode is about acceptance — of growing older, of changing perspectives, and of still carrying your teenage self with you into adulthood. It’s honest, relatable, emotional, and grounding for anyone who has ever looked back and wondered how they got here so fast.

To Postpartum Me | A Message To Those Early Days Of Motherhood14 mai 202600:07:25

Postpartum life is often described as beautiful — but it can also feel lonely, overwhelming, emotional, and completely life-changing.

In this episode of Letterbox, we read an anonymous postpartum letter exploring the reality of new motherhood after birth: postpartum recovery, sleepless nights, breastfeeding, hormonal changes, identity loss, and the emotional weight of caring for a newborn baby while still showing up for a toddler.

This story reflects the truth of early motherhood — the quiet moments of connection, the exhaustion, the mum guilt, and the pressure to “bounce back” while your whole life has changed. It touches on postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, maternal mental health, and the hidden emotional experience many new mums go through but rarely talk about.

If you are a new mum, pregnant, in the fourth trimester, or supporting someone through postpartum recovery, this episode offers validation, comfort, and real lived experience. It is a reminder that you are not alone in the chaos, the healing, or the identity shift that comes with becoming a mother.

To The Man On The Bridge| An Honest Letter About Homelessness, Kindness & Everyday Life12 mai 202600:05:30

Thank you so much to our wonderful listener, Amelie for submitting this letter.

In this episode of Lettebox Podcast, a parent writes an unsent letter to a homeless man they pass on their morning runs with their child.

What begins as a quiet routine crossing a bridge becomes something far more emotionally complex — a reflection on visibility, kindness, and the small interactions that linger far longer than we expect. Each morning exchange of encouragement slowly builds into a deeper awareness of how easily people become “part of the background” in our lives, even while carrying entire worlds of their own.

When a simple question from a child — “Why is that man sitting there?” — interrupts the routine, the writer is forced to confront how to explain homelessness, hardship, and human dignity without reducing a person to their circumstances.

This episode explores themes of:

* homelessness and social invisibility

* motherhood and emotional exhaustion

* everyday kindness and human connection

* empathy, guilt, and helplessness

* storytelling through personal letters

A reflective spoken word piece about noticing people, struggling to find the right words, and the quiet impact strangers can have on our lives without ever knowing it.

Perfect for listeners who enjoy emotional storytelling podcasts, real-life reflections, and intimate narrative writing.
