When Transformation Comes Home: How Leaders Integrate Growth After Change10 Nov 202500:43:22

Send us a text

What happens when you’ve been changed by a powerful experience—growth, success, or transformation—and then return to the same environment that hasn’t changed with you? In this episode of The Leadership Vision Podcast, Nathan Freeburg talks with Dr. Linda and Brian Schubring to unpack Chapter 5 of Unfolded: Lessons in Transformation from an Origami Crane. Together, they explore what it means for leaders to come “home” after transformation—to re-enter familiar places with new eyes, integrate learning without losing authenticity, and respond to misunderstanding or resistance with grounded self-acceptance.

You’ll discover how to navigate post-growth tension, recognize the “maps” that guide your next chapter, and turn personal insight into collective growth. For leaders who want to grow without leaving others behind, this episode reframes home as the true beginning of impact.

Episode Overview

This conversation invites leaders to think of home as a metaphor for integration—the moment when transformation becomes an integral part of daily life. Nathan, Linda, and Brian reflect on how growth changes our inner landscape and why it can feel disorienting to return to familiar roles or teams afterward. Using the story of OC, the origami crane, they explore how to balance confidence with humility, courage with rest, and individuality with community.

Key Takeaways

  • Growth requires reintegration. Real transformation isn’t complete until you’ve learned how to bring it home.
  • Self-acceptance sustains flight. You don’t need to prove your growth—own it, rest in it, and live from it.
  • Criticism often follows courage. Expect pushback after change; learn to listen without losing your center.
  • “Home” restores and relaunches. Renewal, reflection, and rest give leaders the capacity to serve again.
  • Your “map” was always within. The wisdom, strengths, and potential you need have been part of you all along.

Things to Think About While Listening

  • When have you returned to a familiar place or team after a period of personal or professional growth?
  • How did others respond—and how did you respond to their reactions?
  • What practices help you effectively reintegrate new learning without minimizing its impact?
  • Where are the “maps” in your own leadership story that guide your next chapter?
  • How can you create space for others who are returning home changed?

Send us a text

In this episode of the Leadership Vision Podcast, host Nathan Freeburg is joined by Dr. Linda and Brian Schubring, co-authors of Unfolded: Lessons in Transformation from an Origami Crane. • Why our lives can be seen as maps that reveal both familiar paths and hidden folds.
  • How reflection helps us navigate uncertainty and find answers within our own stories.
  • The role of origin stories and shaping influences in leadership.
  • How life’s seasons and folds prepare us for growth and resilience.
  • The importance of mentors and guides—experts, explorers, empaths, and entertainers—who help us interpret our maps.

Pull Quotes:

Work That Shapes Us: A Labor Day Reflection on Purpose and Leadership01 Sep 202500:05:33

Send us a text

In this short Labor Day reflection, host Nathan Freeburg shares an unexpected leadership insight inspired by the Benedictine monks’ philosophy of work. Drawing on the ancient motto Ora et Labora—“Pray and Work”—this episode explores how viewing our work as sacred, balanced, and community-driven can transform the way we lead and build team culture.

Whether you're running a team, leading a company, or simply reevaluating your relationship with work, this episode invites you to reframe work as more than just a task—it’s a shaping force.

💡 Key Takeaways:

  • Work is meaningful—no matter the task. When approached with purpose, even the most mundane activities can become opportunities for making an impact and fostering growth.
  • Rhythm beats hustle. The Benedictine daily structure offers a sustainable model of balance between deep work, rest, reflection, and community.
  • We’re shaped by how we work. The habits we form through work influence who we become as leaders and teammates.
  • Leadership is communal, not just individual. Reframing work as something done with and for others builds stronger, healthier cultures.

Ever get stuck trying to navigate your way through a massive project or goal? You’ll want to tune into our latest episode where we, alongside guest Brian Schubering, reveal the power of breaking big visions into small, achievable steps. We’ll also talk about the motivational boost that comes from meeting interim targets, whether weekly, monthly, or quarterly. So, whether you're a leader struggling to communicate your vision or an individual feeling overwhelmed by a big goal, this episode will equip you with the strategies you need to set your sights high and then conquer it, one small step at a time.

Have you ever wondered how successful leaders master the art of team facilitation? How do they engage their team and foster an environment of productive discussions? With Dr. Linda and Brian  Schubring as our esteemed guests, we unravel these mysteries. They share their wealth of knowledge, gained from facilitating over 400 teams, to help us navigate everyday facilitation struggles. We explore elevating past low expectations and creating a dynamic environment that encourages active participation and captures everyone's attention.

Engaging your team is not just about sharing information; it's about sparking conversations that foster meaningful connections. Reflecting on a formative conversation with an educator, Brian shares enlightening insights on maintaining attention during lengthy discussions. We draw parallels from stand-up comedy, where audience interaction is critical. This discussion leads us to the art of 'people-centric' facilitation, where the material is delivered intentionally and in an adaptable manner, prioritizing people and their unique responses.

In the final part, we delve into a strengths-based approach to leadership, discussing how facilitation can propel teams forward. We underscore creating a supportive yet challenging environment where every voice is valued. The Schubertings share their unique perspective on the importance of facilitators understanding the nuances between different teams and tailoring their roles to best leverage the strengths of each team. Reflections from the First Half: Resilience, Partnerships, and Big Dreams10 Jul 202300:41:19

Send us a text

Are you ready to dream bigger and overcome fear? What if you could reflect on the past, adapt to the present, and more robustly plan for the future? Brace yourself as we take you through a journey that traverses the peaks and valleys of our experiences in the first half of the year, and the bold dreams we're churning for the second half.

Our journey has been a myriad of experiences. We pause mid-year to ruminate on our leaps and dips, sharing our individual perspectives on our progress. The resilience of the human spirit has been a constant theme as we've partnered with Brian, finding joy even amidst challenges. This partnership, coupled with exposure to different environments and cultures, has been a catalyst for our growth and expansion.

And then there's our online community. Is it misread, wrongly implemented, or merely in need of more time and effort? We've had our share of these debates. Recognizing when we're sowing seeds versus transplanting ideas has been crucial. The key? Patience and time. And let's not forget about dreaming bigger and battling fear. We acknowledge Linda's leadership in shaping our dreams and vision, and take a hard look at how our fears can sometimes limit us. But, here’s the thing - we're committed to living a big enough dream in the second half of the year, and we encourage you to join us on this journey.

People-Centric Leadership: The Key to Building Stronger Teams05 Jun 202300:34:14

Send us a text

In today's episode, Nathan Freeburg and Brian Schubring discuss the importance of leaders knowing their people. They emphasize the significance of understanding individuals in their personal, emotional, and relational contexts. They share an example of an executive leader who demonstrated deep knowledge of her team members, which allowed her to motivate, inspire, and develop them effectively. The discussion highlights the correlation between a leader's self-awareness and their ability to know and connect with others. It emphasizes intentionality, time, and adaptability in the process of knowing people, while discouraging forced interactions.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. It's good to take a moment and think about how well you know yourself when it comes to your professional, relational, and emotional sides. Your level of self-awareness can greatly impact your ability to understand others. Are there any areas where you feel like you could improve your understanding of yourself?
  2. Have you thought about any personal growth or development practices for yourself? This is a great way to consider areas of growth in your life, whether it's in relationships, parenting, or challenges you've faced. These experiences can give you a better understanding of yourself and others.
  3. Take some time to think about how you can consciously get to know others better. What can you do to create opportunities for deeper connections and understanding in your work environment? Remember that being intentional, taking time, and being adaptable are all important as you work towards building meaningful relationships with your team. How can you encourage genuine and authentic interactions?

Send us a text

In this episode of the Leadership Vision Podcast, we introduce a new series called "That's Just What Leaders Do." We invite you to join the conversation between Brian Schubring and Nathan Freeburg, who shares valuable insights on the importance of learning lessons.

Brian recounts a personal story from 22 years ago when he presented a proposal to a client and missed an opportunity to negotiate a higher contract. Through this engaging discussion, listeners are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences, discover how to stay open to learning and share their lessons with others.

How the Best Leaders Slow Down and Make Better Decisions When Faced with Challenges01 May 202300:18:27

Send us a text

Leaders face challenges all the time. Some are small, like a team member struggling with a project. Others are large, like a global pandemic. But no matter the size of the challenge, the best leaders all have one thing in common: they know how to slow down and make better decisions through action and accountability.

In this episode, you'll hear what we've learned working with the best leaders on how to slow down and make better decisions when faced with challenges:

  1. Take a step back. When facing a challenge, getting caught up in the moment is easy. Your adrenaline is pumping, your mind is racing, and you want to make a decision and move on. But before you do anything, take a step back and give yourself time to process what's happening. This will help you to calm down, think more clearly, and make a better decision.
  2. Gather information. Once you've taken a step back, it's time to gather information. This doesn't mean you need to have all the answers before you make a decision. But it does mean that you need to understand the situation as best you can. Talk to people who are involved, research the issue, and gather as much data as possible. The more information you have, the better you'll be to make sound decisions.
  3. Don't be afraid to ask for help. No one is an island. And even the best leaders need help sometimes. If you're struggling to make a decision, don't be afraid to ask for help from your team, colleagues, or a trusted advisor. Sometimes, all you need is a fresh perspective to help you see things more clearly.

These tips can help you slow down, make better decisions, and lead your team through even the most challenging times.

If you're a leader, we encourage you to use these tips the next time you're faced with a challenge. By slowing down, gathering information, and asking for help, you can make better decisions and lead your team through even the most difficult times.

Three Keys to Doing Hard Things17 Apr 202300:35:32

Send us a text

Leaders are taught that being tougher is the key to overcoming any challenge. But what does it mean to be tough? For many, that may mean hiding your fears, insecurities, or weaknesses no matter what you’re up against. It’s the idea that rolling up one’s proverbial sleeves, putting in more hours, or grinding it out is the only way to get what you need.

But is that really true? That the key to toughness and, therefore, success for leaders comes down to who can hold on tighter? We don’t think so, and neither does the author, performance expert, executive coach, and runner, Steve Magness.

Today on the podcast, Brian and I will discuss his latest book, Do Hard Things,” why we get resilience wrong and the surprising science of REAL TOUGHNESS.”

We’ll share a brief overview of this book, give a couple of our biggest takeaways, then share a few tips to help you better understand toughness and how you can apply that to your leadership and do Hard Things.

Play: The Secret Weapon of High-Performing Teams11 Aug 202500:40:47

Send us a text

In this episode of the Leadership Vision Podcast, we dive deep into Chapter 2 of Unfolded: Lessons in Transformation from an Origami Crane and explore how the concept of “play” applies to team development.

Joined by authors Dr. Linda and Brian Schubring, we explore how “play” isn’t just about fun and games—it’s about intentional practice that unlocks trust, creativity, and deeper collaboration. When teams are given safe environments to experiment without pressure, they surface hidden talents, build psychological safety, and reimagine how they relate to one another.

This is the second part of our conversation on play. If you missed the first episode, we recommend going back and listening to the individual-focused exploration of play.

🔊 Key Quotes

“The importance of play is to give the characters of our life a different context to be who they are.” – Brian Schubring

“Sometimes play is conflict avoidant.” – Dr. Linda Schubring

“When teams are given the permission to play for the first time, they’re not going to know what to do… but leaders can gain so much by just watching.” – Brian Schubring

“Play is intentional to the team, to the mindset of people, and to the culture.” – Brian Schubring

Linda and Brian offer five action steps for introducing intentional play into your team:

  1. Create a Playground – Designate spaces or time to experiment without consequence.
  2. Celebrate Learning and Unlearning – Honor what’s gained and what’s released.
  3. Play with Strengths – Engage people in ways that both highlight and stretch their natural talents.
  4. Schedule Time to Leap – Create moments where risk and growth go hand in hand.
  5. Ask Often – Reflect regularly with your team: Are we playing? Are we progressing?

🎯 Reflection Questions for Leaders

  • What kind of play exists on your team today, if any?
  • Do you have a comfort culture, a complacent culture, or a competitive culture?
  • Where can you create intentional moments of low-pressure experimentation?
  • Are there unhelpful patterns your team needs to unlearn?

Reflections on Growth & Change at Leadership Vision23 Jan 202300:20:11

Send us a text

This episode is a bit of a look back to look forward. In 2023, Leadership Vision will be shifting and getting more clear about what we do, what we offer to our clients, and how we help people understand and express their beauty and brilliance. We had a whole episode mapped out about our new direction when we realized that we should pause and take a moment to reflect on how we got to this point. In doing that, we came up with three questions for you to consider as you think about your contributions to your team. The first question is what stands out about this past year. How have you grown in the past year, and what contributions have you made?

Ways to Invest in your Leaders in 202309 Jan 202300:23:06

Send us a text

As 2022 is now over, and all the hope and optimism of 2023 is standing before us, we wanted to take a moment to pause and reflect on three of our favorite podcast episodes from the past 12 months.

Today's episode contains three snippets from longer conversations focusing on helping leaders transform how they express their beauty and brilliance.

As we charge into the new year, we imagine a place where people feel connected and a certainty of purpose emerges. We believe people are the most important focus of attention and investment in this place. As you think about what you want to accomplish this year and maybe what your team wants to accomplish, we'd love to be one of several resources you engage in to make those goals a reality.

If you've been listening to our podcast for a while, consider this a refresher course on all things self-improvement. If you're newer to the show, this episode is like an appetizer of larger lessons that will hopefully entice you to go back into the catalog and listen to the full episodes. I've included links in the show notes and accompanying blog post.

So these three brief lessons today focus on learning from our past experiences, investing in the people around you, and deepening your self-awareness in Strengths.
