Ep 45 - 3rd Sunday of Advent - Eyes see, ears hear! -December 14, 202511 Dec 202500:45:43

We start with a gorgeous poem from Marci.

Our question is: what is a memory of seeing the splendor, the glory of God?

Laura talks about the term Jung used for this – the “numinous” which comes from numinosum – Rudolf Otto’s term (in his Idea of the Holy) for the inexpressible, mysterious, terrifying, directly experienced and pertaining only to the divinity.

Marci mentions experiments of putting monitors on plants and recording their “song.”

We explore how dreamwork can help bring sight to my own psychological/spiritual blindness.

Laura mentions the Jungian Marie Louise Von Franz and the I Ching, a symbolic tool for understanding the flow of life.

We ask ourselves: what would it mean to live with the same commitment as John the Baptist?

Ep 44 - 2nd Sunday of Advent - John the Baptist! 04 Dec 202500:46:38

2nd Sunday of Advent - John the Baptist!

Our question: What events in my life have helped separate the wheat and the chaff within me.

The Hebrew word for "fear" in "fear of the Lord," such as in Isaiah, is typically 𝑦𝑖𝑟𝑎ℎ (יִרְאָה), which translates to a sense of reverence, awe, and profound respect, rather than terror.

Laura mentions the free newsletter "Believing " from the New York Times.

Ep 31 - 23rd Sunday in TKOHIN, September 7, 202505 Sep 202500:39:29

23rd Sunday in the Kingdom of Heaven is Now time. Lots of laughter as we tackle some very tough readings.

We ask ourselves (and you) this question: "What tempts me in my daily life? What is hard for me to renounce or let go of?"

"If it is true that the ability to be puzzled is the beginningof wisdom, then this truth is a sad commentary on the wisdom of modern man. Whatever the merits of our high degree of literary and universal education, wehave lost the gift for being puzzled."

----Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm

We mention this quote from Thomas Merton: “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”

Laura was searching for this this part of Rumi's poem, The Great Wagon.

"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there."

Laura quotes Erich Neumann on a provocative message in the Psyche and Eros myth

Marci tells the story of St. Francis, his father, and the Bishop.

And much more!!

EP 30 - 22nd Sunday in TKOHIN, August 31, 202529 Aug 202500:41:28

22nd Sunday in The Kingdom of Heaven is Now Time. We explore the Hebrew word for humility.

Excerpts quoted from this site. “How am I using the Divine gifts that have been given to me? Am I reaching my own potential for greatness?”

This sentiment is powerfully encapsulated in the Hebrew word for humility, anavah. While the English word humility originates from the Latin, humilis, meaning meekness or lowliness,  anavah stems from the word anu, meaning “to respond.”

Also found this lovely quote related to this concept. “Every person should have two pockets. In one pocket should be a piece of paper saying: ‘I am but dust and ashes.’ When one is feeling too proud, reach into this pocket and take out this paper and read it. In the other pocket should be a piece of paper saying: ‘For my sake was the world created.’ When one is feeling disheartened and lowly, reach into this pocket and take this paper out and read it. We are each the joining of two worlds. We are fashioned from clay, but our spirit is the breath of Adonai.”

(Tales of The Hasidim Later Masters, Martin Buber, p.249-50)

Marci uses the word theophonies -

  1. a visible manifestation to humankind of God or a god."the great theophany of Sinai"

Ep 43- First Sunday of Advent - Stay Awake! November 30, 202527 Nov 202500:48:12

Season Two! First Sunday of Advent.

Our question: What helps me stay awake or what puts me to sleep spiritually/psychologically?

Marci recommends the book, Learning to Walk in the Dark by Barbara Brown Taylor, and quotes Anthony De Mello.

A quote from Parker Palmer, via Fr. Rohr."Thomas Merton claimed that “There is in all visible things … a hidden wholeness.” But back in the human world—where we are less self-revealing than jack pines—Merton’s words can, at times, sound like wishful thinking. Afraid that our inner light will be extinguished or our inner darkness exposed, we hide our true identities from each other [and] become separated from our own souls. We end up living divided lives, so far removed from the truth we hold within that we cannot know the “integrity that comes from being what you are.”

Ep 24 - 16th Sunday TKOHIN, July 20, 202518 Jul 202500:40:22

The 16th Sunday of the Kingdom of Heaven is Now.

(If your platform isn't showing hyperlinks for these notes, please let us know! You can also find them on our spotify page.)

We dive deep into all three readings. Laura references the book " Abraham : the man and the symbol ; a Jungian interpretation of the biblical story."

What Laura forgot, "... the Sages also divided the functions of the angels’ mission into three: to herald the birth of Isaac, to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, and to heal Abraham. "One more quote from the book, “In the heat of the day” the sun is at its apogee. Midday heat, especially in the Middle East, can affect one’s wakefulness. Perhaps Abraham dozed off as he sat at the door of his tent, and entered a hypnagogic state. At the same time, his psychic receptiveness increased, as often happens when one is half awake and half asleep. In this state, a different consciousness may emerge—the greater, broader, and clearer consciousness of a great vision. Many cultures symbolize this consciousness of and receptiveness to the divinity by a depiction of the sun at its zenith, generating extreme heat."

We have a lengthy discussion of the story of Martha and Mary, “martyr syndrome” and wonder: could we all be Mary?

Marci offers some wonderful stories about of St. Francis including Francis' visit to the Sultan.

Ep 22 - 14th Sunday in TKOHIN - July 6, 202504 Jul 202500:29:59

14th Sunday in the Kingdom of Heaven is Now.

(Please alert us if you don't see hyperlinks in your show notes!)

We discuss the power of home. Laura mentions "nous," a concept she's heard from Ilia Delio. Heavy stuff.

"Pierre Teilhard de Chardin saw the emergence of a new type of person with computer technology, an evolution of consciousness that led to a new level of cosmic life, what he called the “noosphere” (from the Greek “nous” or mind). The noosphere is the natural culmination of biological evolution, an organic whole, now on the level of thought, destined for some type of superconvergence and unification."

-- Ilia Delio.

Also the important concept of Inflation. (Jungian term).

[Inflation] should not be interpreted as … conscious self-aggrandizement. Such is far from being the rule. In general we are not directly conscious of this condition at all, but can at best infer its existence indirectly from the symptoms. These include the reactions of our immediate environment. Inflation magnifies the blind spot in the eye. [“The Self,” CW 9ii, par. 44.] -- from Daryl Sharp’s Jung Lexicon

Ep 19 - Holy Trinity - June 15, 202513 Jun 202500:42:43

Marci talks about her use of different pronouns for God.

We reflect on what we learned during a recent talk from Ilia Delio.

We mention Teilhard de Chardin (as we often do) and the challenge of using words like “god” or “love."

We discuss Jung's concept of “eros” and “logos." And Edinger's thoughts on endurance.

We talk about individualism and faith, and the book The Gift and The Serviceberry.

"Christ, as a particular concrete manifestation of the Holy Spirit, must die in order for the disciples to develop an individual relation to the Holy Spirit, that is, the projection must be withdrawn. This is the 'very important step forward beyond Christocentrism.'"

We talk about the problem of “always looking up.” Laura mentions Jungian James Hillman

We talk about the the political and economic power of the church.

Laura and Marci swim in the deep waters of Hebrews and Atonement theory.

[There is a] . . . continued and progressive divine incarnation. Thus man is received and integrated into the divine drama. He seems destined to play a decisive part in it; that is why he must receive the Holy Spirit. I look upon the receiving ofthe Holy Spirit as a highly revolutionary fact which cannot take place until the ambivalent nature of the Father is recognized. -- Carl Jung

Ep 16- Sixth Sunday of Easter - May 25, 202523 May 202500:37:06

We talk about controversies in the early church and today.

Marci offers a great exercise for listening deeply to others.

We explore following literal laws of the church vs. the law of love.

We talk about Laura’s love of rocks and her gift of petoskey stones.

Marci recommends "Ordinary Mysticism :Your Life as Sacred Ground" By Mirabai Starr

"Christ, as a particular concrete manifestation of the Holy Spirit, must die in order for the disciples to develop an individual relation to the Holy Spirit, that is, the projection must be withdrawn. This is the"very important step forward beyond Christocentrism."

--Carl Jung

"The Spirit is destined to be incarnate in man or to choose him as a transitory dwelling-place. "Non habet nomen proprium," (he doesn’t have a proper name) says St. Thomas; because he will receive the name of man. That is why he must not be identified with Christ. We cannot receive the Holy Spirit unless we have accepted our own individual life as Christ accepted his. Thus we become the "sons of god" fated to experience the conflict of the divine opposites, represented by the crucifixion."

Antiphon for Divine Wisdom By Hildegard of Bingen, Translated By Barbara Newman

Sophia!

you of the whirling wings,

circling encompassing

energy of God:

you quicken the world in your clasp.

One wing soars in heaven

one wing sweeps the earth

and the third flies all around us.

Praise to Sophia!

Let all the earth praise her!

Ep 12 - Bonus reflections after Holy Week28 Apr 202500:14:50

Laura reflects on her powerful and unexpected experience of Holy Week.

She recalls the scene/joke from the Tony award-winning musical "Passing Strange." (Great musical - with adult language and themes)

We talk about the forms of worship, from traditional to modern and the effects they produce. Joseph Campbell had strong opinions on this. "....they've translated the Mass out of ritual language and into a language that has a lot of domestic associations. The Latin of the Mass was a language that threw you out of the field of domesticity. The altar was turned so that the priest's back was to you, and with him you addressed yourself outward. .... They've forgotten that the function of ritual is to pitch you out, not to wrap you back in where you have been all the time. ... the rituals that once conveyed an inner reality are now merely form."

-- Joseph Campbell

The Triduum - Reflections on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil14 Apr 202500:46:43

Marci shares her excitement and knowledge of the 3 holy days of the Triduum. Our original discussion was 1 hour and 20 minutes, now down to 46 minutes. Laura runs out of steam at the end. Please forgive the shortened Easter vigil description.

Holy Thursday Readings: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/041725-Supper.cfm

Good Friday Readings: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/041825.cfm

Easter Vigil Readings : https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/041925.cfm

We spent much of our history arguing about the “how” and the “if” and who could do what Catholics called the “transubstantiation” of the bread and wine instead of simply learning how to be present. We made the Eucharist into a magic act to be believed instead of a personal transformation to be experienced. We changed bread more than people, it seems to me. We emphasized the priest as the “transformer” instead of the people as the transformed. We made “Real Presence” into a doctrine (which has its very good meaning!), but we seldom taught people how to be really present (which is contemplation). When you are really present, you will experience the Real Presence for yourself.

Ep 9c - Palm Sunday Part 3 - Reflecting on the Passion11 Apr 202500:22:22

We continue on the journey of the Passion. Reflecting on how the media portrays it and our own ability to witness suffering.

"Another aspect of the Gethsemane image that it emphasizes the fact that suffering is a crucial part of the process. The important part is to accept the suffering one encounters. You know we all have the deeply ingrained infantile notion that we’re supposed to be happy. That’s not true. We are supposed to suffer. If you attach any psychological credence to what I’m describing as a Christian archetype, if it has any general validity, can you escape the conclusion that is implied that we’re supposed to suffer?"

--Edward Edinger, The Christian archetype : a Jungian commentary on the life of Christ

"For many centuries the west, under Byzantine influence, represented Christ himself alive and open-eyed, a triumphant Savior wearing a royal crown. In the 11th Century there appeared a new type, the emaciated figure with its head fallen on one shoulder and, later, wearing the crown of thorns. This version prevailed in western art thereafter."

Ep 9b - Palm Sunday Part 2 - Reading the Passion11 Apr 202500:19:00

We continue our Passion journey.

Reading - Mk 14:1—15:47

Scroll down to last reading. https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/032424.cfm

Edward Edinger in "Ego and Archetype" re: the crucifixion: "This state is a transition period. It is the limbo of despair following the death of an old life orientation and preceding the birth of a new one. Jesus’ resurrection symbolizes the birth of a more comprehensive personality which can result from the conscious acceptance of the crucifixion ordeal.”

Ep 9a - Palm Sunday Part 1 -- 3 readings- April 13, 202511 Apr 202500:43:11

This was a tough episode for many reasons. Moving into the Passion is hard and Laura struggles to have the courage to share her perspectives on it. Palm Sunday has 4 readings. Here we cover the first three. The next episode is our reading of the Passion and the third episode is our discussion of it. Thank you for sharing this journey with us!

Readings:

Procession with Palms – Gospel Mk 11:1-10, Is 50:4-7, Phil 2:6-11

https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/032424.cfm

“All the gods, all the heavens, all the hells, are within you.”

- Joseph Campbell

The Jesus Myth by Father Andrew Greeley

Edward Edinger – The Christian archetype : a Jungian commentary on the life of Christ

A. K. Coomaraswamy observes, “Myth embodies the nearest approach to absolute truth that can be stated in words.”

Ep 41 - 33rd Sunday in TKOHIN - November 16, 202513 Nov 202500:33:08

The 33rd Sunday in The Kingdom of Heaven is Now Time.

Question: "How do I know that I'm on the right side of history?" And "If I could join Paul and write letters to the Churches in America, what would I say?"

We dip into politics.

We mention the metaphor of the purifying fire found in both scripture and in the medieval practice of alchemy.

We again mention Teihard de Chardin and the evolution of consciousness.

We mention historian Heather Cox Richardson and her daily podcast that explores daily life through the lens of history.

Ep 4 - First Sunday of Lent- March 9, 202507 Mar 202500:40:29

Still recording in stereo. That will soon change!

Laura revisits the idea of "left and right hands" from last week's gospel. Letting her artistic gifts be given from the left hand means that she may not know what happens to them next.

Marci offers many mystical moments.

Readings: Deuteronomy 26:4-10Romans 10:8-13, Luke 4:1-13

Soul, if you want to learn secrets, your heart must forget about shame and dignity. You are God's lover, yet you worry what people are saying.

Marci makes some confessions in this episode! She also creates the SIN slot machine analogy.

Ep 39 - Feast of All Souls - November 2, 202530 Oct 202500:42:20

Our question today is: What happens after we die? We talk about heaven and hell, The Day of the Dead and skull faces.

We visit Ilia Delio's website for several juicy quotes. Here and here. And also this quote to chew on: "

"A person is a center of consciousness expressed in a particular matrix of matter, as if the entire universe (if indeed consciousness is the stuff of the universe) is compacted into this particular material form. In this respect, every person is the universe aware of itself (as Teilhard noted). To put this another way, there is no universe apart from the active centers of personal consciousness; each person is the universe come to self-consciousness."

Marci reads Mary Oliver's poem "When Death Comes."

Laura reads Teilhard de Chardin's poem, "Aging/Dying Prayer"

There are two different reading options for the second reading and the gospel.

The Sunday Readings

We explore the story of Jesus raising the widow's son as our gospel reading.

Ep 38 - 30th Sunday in TKOHIN - October 26, 202524 Oct 202500:40:26

30th Sunday in The Kingdom of Heaven is Now Time.

We ask ourselves (and you) several questions: What does it mean for me to repent?

What was a moment of conversion in my life?

We wonder about how Paul forgave himself and integrated his own conversion experience after being struck down in Damascus. Here is one possible timeline of events.

We talk about prayer, the "Way of the Pilgrim" and his prayer, and prayer mantras.

We explore the paradoxical nature of parables and compare them to dreams.

The Sunday Readings

Ep 37 - 29th Sunday in TKOHIN - October 19, 202517 Oct 202500:36:38

29th Sunday in the Kingdom of Heaven is Now Time.

Question we ask ourselves: "When the Son of Man comes, what faith will he find in me?"

We talk about what posture we take in the world and what is the best "posture" to fight evil or unconsciousness?

Jung's answer to "will the world survive?" "As he did so often, Jung saw the individual as the key to the future: If there are enough individuals who are conscious, who recognize the reality of the opposites, who have done sufficient work on themselves to face and manage the opposites in themselves, then we might avoid this most horrendous of tragedies."

Ep 36 - 28th Sunday in TKOHIN, October 12, 202510 Oct 202500:40:30

28th Sunday in the Kingdom of Heaven is Now Time.

We ask ourselves: "What is my faith around “being healed?”

We talk about the bubbles we travel in - economic, spiritual, or political.

Also, Do I prefer to swim in the shallow water or the deep?

We drift into the deep waters of the Adam and Eve story.

We talk of the Felix culpa -- Latin for “happy fault.” It comes from a line in the Exsultet, an ancient hymn sung during the Easter Vigil.
