March is John Carpenter month on the Late Night Fright. The next film up is his 1982 masterpiece THE THING starring Kurt Russell. Still waters run deep but paranoia runs deeper. 

THE THING was critically reviled upon its initial release but became a cult film upon its home video release and has undergone a critical reevaluation since then. The film is based upon the novella WHO GOES THERE by John Campbell, Jr., editor of ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION. Howard Hawks produced a successful 1951 version entitled THE THING FROM OUTER SPACE directed by Christian Nyby, a film Carpenter admires very much. Truer to the source material, THE THING, adapted by Bill Lancaster, chronicles what happens when Snake Plissken plays a game of chess with a shape shifting alien. 

Featuring a score by Ennio Morricone and wonderful supporting performances, THE THING may just be Carpenter's masterpiece. 

The first episode of this two parter deals with the history of the story, Carpenter's signature style, thematic elements and the score.

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK was written by Carpenter and Nick Castle, the screenwriter who famously played “The Shape” in Carpenter’s 1978 masterpiece HALLOWEEN, and produced by Debra Hill. The film is a mashup of the action, horror, and sci-fi genres, moves along at a breakneck pace and really needs to be seen to be believed.

Mystery/thriller month continues with Brian DePalma's 1981 masterpiece BLOW OUT, starring everyone's favorite Sweat Hog Vinnie Barbarino (aka John Travolta). 

Barbarino plays sound effects man Jack Terry, witness to a political assassination. Barbarino is joined by a stellar cast including Nancy Allen (Robocop, Carrie), John Lithgow (3rd Rock From The Sun), and Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue). This criminally overlooked film combines elements of Hitchcock and the Italian genre giallo (slasher/psychological horror/crime fiction) and may just be Barbarino's greatest on screen performance.

This much maligned film deals with the character of Moose (Travolta), an unbalanced Hollywood street performer who has an unhealthy obsession with movie star Hunter Dunbar (Devon Sawa). Travolta goes out on a limb in a performance that must be seen to be believed.

Eastwood stars as a Carmel disc jockey who has a one night stand with an obsessed fan. The fan is expertly played by Jessica Walter and the film has a Hitchcock/slasher vibe. Join the Late night Fright for a look at the 2013 documentary MILIUS which chronicles the life and times of legendary screenwriter John Milius. He's responsible for a lot of your favorite movies and you don't even know it! 

Mystery/thriller month continues on the Late Night Fright with director Don Siegel’s classic 1971 actioner DIRTY HARRY. Clint Eastwood stars as San Francisco Inspector Harry Callahan, charged with apprehending the vile Scorpio, played by Andrew Robinson.

The script features contributions from the legendary John Milius and some of the most quotable and memorable moments ever put on screen. Milius also concocted the story for 1973’s MAGNUM FORCE, the second of the five Dirty Harry films.
