Newcastle prepared for the Carabao Cup final with a victory at West Ham that moved them up to sixth in the Premier League. Eddie Howe's side will look to end a 70-year wait for a major trophy on Sunday when they take on Premier League leaders Liverpool at Wembley. They went into Monday's fixture at London Stadium desperate for a win to ensure they face the Reds with momentum, and they got it thanks to Bruno Guimaraes' second-half strike.

Moments after Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola made a brilliant save to prevent Max Kilman scoring an own goal, Newcastle struck when Guimaraes turned in Harvey Barnes' lofted pass. It was just the tonic Howe's side, hampered by injuries and suspension, needed after one win in their previous four games. They were fortunate not to be behind inside the first minute when Tino Livramento missed a clearance and the ball went through to Tomas Soucek, but the midfielder fired over from close range.

Newcastle improved after that and twice went close to taking the lead before the break through Barnes. Danny Welbeck scored an extra-time winner as Brighton beat Newcastle to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals after an incident-packed tie that ended 10-a-side. Daniel Muñoz's stoppage time header denied Newcastle United all three points as they drew 1-1 at Crystal Palace on Saturday. Eddie Howe's side could have fallen behind in the first half at Selhurst Park when Muñoz missed a glorious opportunity to put the hosts - who had looked likelier to open the scoring - ahead. But the Eagles were punished soon after the restart when England defender Guehi turned Anthony Gordon's low cross into his own net after an excellent set piece routine from the Magpies. United weren't at their fluent best in South London, but looked to have the points in the bag until the 94th minute when Muñoz headed in a Guehi cross, with Nick Pope - who had had a superb game for the visitors - unable to keep it out in what was a bitterly disappointing finish for the Magpies.

Anthony Gordon saw a first half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford as Newcastle United were held to a goalless draw at Everton on Saturday night.
