180 Child Stuck On Past Tense Mistakes? How To Help In 4 Steps!19 Sep 202400:19:38

Hey Friends~

Is your child using past tense mistakes like “I maked it,” instead of “I made it” ?

Do they use present tense instead of past:  “I cook,” when it was actually this morning when they helped with breakfast?

Past tense errors are a common indicator showing a child needs some help with language development. A common mistake parents make is thinking the child will simply figure it out.  While that can be true sometimes, waiting also allows them to create habits that later need to be undone and re-learned.

If you’d like to know how to help your child with using better language NOW, listen in for 4 simple steps to make the correction easy.  Why not help your child early, along the way, as they are developing!

Always cheering you on!

80 Teaching or Telling. Know The Difference For Better Listening and Compliance!15 Sep 202300:12:43

Hey Friends,

When we tell our kids to do things, we know what we expect they do. It is natural for us to think they understand the whole picture when they have demonstrated in the past, they can do it.  However, their behavior tells you what your child does not yet FULLY understand.  Their behavior - or lack thereof - is a window into what you still need to TEACH.

So, today's topic is the difference between TEACHING and TELLING!  And a story of what happens when we TELL and wrongly think that we already taught!

73 What Is The Motive Behind Your Child’s Behavior? It May Not Be As It Seems.21 Aug 202300:23:43

Hey Friends,

What Is The Motive Behind Your Child's Behavior?  Sometimes what our kids do is weird! It makes no sense!  This is true when we look through our logical, adult brain!  The problem is that part of our kid's brains is not firing the same way as yours is!  Therefore, you think differently!  Thank God, our kids have parents!

Today's episode is based on a conversation with a friend as we reminisced what we learned - and what we understood - when our kids were young.  Distilled down, today's topic is what I think was the biggest game-changer for ME in my parenting.  I hope this blesses you!

69 Can You Really Reparent Yourself? And When You Should Consider It.07 Aug 202300:15:56

Hey Friends,

Do you ever wish that you could Re-Parent yourself?  Well, you can it’s true.

Many people come to adulthood and have some baggage from their upbringing. In fact, most everybody has some kind of experience that they brought with them to adulthood. Those traumatic or even "normal" experiences are not helping them be the best parent they want to be, nor it is helping them be the best human they want to be. Something lingers... even after you try to forget, forgive, and know it is done.

I want you to know that: You can speak to that part of you that is still small, still young, and still growing.  You can be the parent to yourself so you get what the little you needed.

64 Are You Confident When Helping Your Child Produce Speech Sounds?20 Jul 202300:13:57

Hello Parents,

This is the final episode in this series, "Helping Your Child Produce Speech Sounds."   My hope for you has 3 parts:

1-that you feel more confident, have a bit more of a road map in knowing a few strategies for a few sounds.

2- that you see how learning these strategies help you manage the behaviors that are associated with your child's frustration when they cannot communicate well.

3- that you know how to work with your child's developing brain so you can target your teaching using their main operating system.

When you know how to do these things, you will more easily build skills of communicating, strengthen your connection, and have more enjoyment along the parenting journey.

For more specific help with your child in mind, contact me at hello@thelanguageofplay.com with your questions.   You can also schedule a zoom call where we can meet in order to decide if working together is right for you!  15 minute Let's Meet! Session

63 How Teaching Speech Sounds Makes You a Better Parent!19 Jul 202300:24:25

Dear Parents,

Parenting is tough work!  Did you know that teaching speech sounds can actually make you a better parent?  It's true!!   In speech sound teaching, you become more aware of the little nuances of learning and what your child needs.  Your child becomes more aware of the small pieces needed and deepens trust to do the hard things.

Today, we talk about a game that is simple and you can do at home - whether your teaching speech sounds or math facts!  This is a way to take the hard and let your child feel like it is easy.

Spoiler:  The first part is foundational, so you know how and why this game works in your child's developing brain.

Let me know how it goes!

Sincerely,

Dinalynn

Hey Friends,

The S sound is very common for kids to say wrong.  Most commonly, they say "th" and we call it a lisp.  Sometimes it is cute.  Should we allow that "cute" sound to stay?  Well, it is not so cute when the habit has formed and your child is grown!

Today, I will show you how to teach your young child, ages 3-6, how to say that sound in a way that is easy and effective, while y

our child is still in that early stage of sound learning.

Thank you for listening!

Always cheering you on,

58 Does Your Child Say the R Sound Wrong? 3 Real-Life Ways Parents Can Help at Home!30 Jun 202300:18:44

Hello Parents!

The R sound is one of the most common reasons a child comes to speech therapy in the schools.  Speech Pathologists have lots of ways to help, and still some kids continue to struggle.  However, there are somethings you can do at home to increase the likelihood your kiddo won’t struggle with R.

So - if you have every wondered what you can do to help your child at home with R this episode is for you!  Today, I give you strategies that help for older kids with sound errors as well as the toddler that hasn’t been expected to say the R sound yet.  So come along for some well-rounded advice in sound development.

The strategies in this episode are classified as "Auditory Bombardment," which means, these are ways to bombard your child's brain and ears with the correct pronunciation of R.  These strategies work at the speed of home-life and can be integrated easily into what you are already doing!

All the best to you!!

Sincerely,

50 How You Create Confusion asking, ”Why Did You Do That!?” - but it Wasn’t a Question!01 Jun 202300:20:11

Hello Friends,

Today we celebrate 50 Episodes!

And, we continue the conversation from last time.  Your child - No Doubt - does things that make NO SENSE to you!~  We are left scratching our heads in wonder or leaving you in a state of frustration!  We ask "Why did you do that!?" half meaning "stop it!" and half authentically inquiring.  Last time, we considered the power of the authentic, curious inquiry.  Today, we discuss the detrimental power of using that question as a statement of correction, blame, sarcasm, or shame.  Most of us experienced some of this as we grew up.  We will discuss the outcomes and how you can identify and make empowering choices for yourself and your family.

Are we creating confusion when “Why did you do that?” is not actually a question?

49 Why Did My Child Do That?! and How To Ask. The Answer May Not Be What You Think!29 May 202300:17:04

Hello Friends,

I am glad you are here!  Happy Memorial Day 2023 to my American listeners!

Your child - No Doubt - does things that make NO SENSE to you!~  We are left scratching our heads in wonder or leaving you in a state of frustration!  We ask "Why did you do that!?" half meaning "stop it!" and half authentically inquiring.  Today, we will discuss that authentic inquiry.  Come learn how to ask "Why?" in a way that gets you to understand what is actually going on inside your child's brain, by listening to a story!

Does your child get confused when you ask “Why?” questions? Do they struggle to answer in a way that makes sense?  There are a few possibilities for this. The first part of this is.  Are You causing the confusion?  We usually think we speak clearly.  However, as adults, our tone and body language has lots of meaning embedded that causes what we say to not actually mean what we say. The younger our kids are, the more literal thinkers they are.

Are we creating confusion when “Why did you do that?” is not actually a question?

Cheering you on!

Hey Friends,

How do you listen to what your child is NOT saying?  The tantrums give us something to listen to!  But that is NOT what WE want!  Is there a way to look at that tantrum or frustration and SEE what your child's body is saying?

Good practice for this comes when you have BIG, positive adjustments in your household. Maybe it is a new baby. Maybe a big trip. Maybe you are moving homes.  Whatever the adventure, your child will experience it differently than you, and it might not be a fun welcome - - at first!  It just takes a little adjustment. Today, we discuss 4 strategies to help you help your kiddos adjust!

Let's look at how we can read our littlest ones for clues to understand them better.

Ever learning along with you and cheering you on,

40 Helping Your Child Talk About Shared Past Experiences28 Apr 202300:12:24

Hello Friends,

Helping our children tell their experiences is an important task!  It's HOW we build connection.  Today's episode answers the question, "How do I get my child to talk about the past?"  The father that asked this question has a 2 year old, but this strategy is good for any age, including when a child has a delay or is learning a second or dual language!

Enjoy this one strategy, simple as it is, it takes practice to implement!
