A podcast about hunting for history, lost treasure and ordinary people discovering extraordinary objects.

When it comes to unearthing history George Ridgway and Paul Jacobs have the pedigree.Well, George does.He discovered Britain's largest Claudian hoard stuffed full of gold and silver Roman and Iron Age coins.Paul found some rusty nails and a podcasting buddy.

Join George, Paul, and one slightly unreliable Land Rover, as they search the Suffolk landscape for clues to our past.

Along the way they'll detect with the finders of some of Britain's greatest treasures, and meet people who hunt for history in unique and brilliant ways.

But it's about more than just treasure.

This is a podcast about friendship and finding peace in the landscape, about understanding our place in time, and about eternal optimism, patience and romance.

It's about the power of a pint after a day in our gorgeous countryside.

But if you want a simple way to describe it to your mates, just tell them it's about two blokes, passionate about history, bombing around in a battered old Landy, trying to understand the landscape they love.

THE LAND ROVERS: DIGGING DEEPER

Episode 1. The Helmingham Hoard.

Our brand new history hunting podcast kicks off with what every archaeologist and detectorist dreams of finding - a massive Roman hoard!

And this one was discovered by our very own George.

Join the boys from the site of the discovery and hear the incredible story of the largest Claudian hoard ever discovered in Britain. How did George unearth hundreds of ancient gold and silver coins in the gorgeous Suffolk countryside? Why was it there? Who buried it? What else is still out there?

And that's not all.

After heading to London in the trusty Land Rover for the worldwide sale of the hoard, the boys return for one last hunt when George discovers something else extraordinary...

Special thanks to Alice Cullen, coin specialist at Noonans, Mayfair, and the whole team at Noonans.

Mudlarking with Jason Sandy

Episode 4

mardi 8 avril 2025Duration 55:18

THE LAND ROVERS: DIGGING DEEPER
Episode 4. Mudlarking with Jason Sandy

The river Thames in London is the world's longest archaeological site.

It snakes through the city, keeping it's historical secrets from all but a doughty, committed, unique community of history hunters: MUDLARKS.

Mudlarks have special permission from the Port of London Authority to hunt for history on the foreshore, and this passionate bunch have unearthed some extraordinary objects that tell the story of London's journey from prehistoric water source, through Roman occupation, destruction by the great fire and wartime blitz, to one of the world's most vibrant, modern, global cities.

When George and Paul join over 40 Mudlarks at The Watermen's Hall in London, that history is laid out and vividly retold in front of their very eyes.

And one of those 40 Mudlarks, one of the best, is Jason Sandy. Originally from Virginia, Jason has been scouring the Thames foreshore for over 13 years but is always drawn back to one particular spot - Rotherhithe - where in 1620 the famous Mayflower ship, full of pilgrims, set sail to establish a permanent colony in America, changing the course of history and forging a path that Jason's own ancestors followed.

And when the boys join him at 'the birthplace of America' they discover objects that chart millions of years of history for themselves. And, incredibly, Jason unearths something very personal indeed.

To see London's history as discovered by it's Mudlarks, visit the Museum of London Docklands exhibition 'Secrets of the Thames'. https://www.londonmuseum.org.uk/whats-on/secrets-thames/

Cardew's Clues

Episode 3

jeudi 20 mars 2025Duration 26:54

THE LAND ROVERS: A HISTORY HUNTING PODCAST
Episode 3. Cardew’s Clues.

Meet the Reverend Cardew of Helmingham.

Eccentric Victorian. Amateur Archaeologist. History Hunter.

In 1864 Cardew started writing a journal to record all the discoveries he had made around Suffolk: Roman villas, Anglo-Saxon barrows, moated Medieval manors, and ancient burials. All of which he gently covered back up and left in place.

The only clues to the locations of these incredible discoveries were in the journals, which themselves were left to gather dust. Forgotten.

Until, that is, another couple of History Hunters found them and dusted them off 160 years later… Guess who?

THE LAND ROVERS: A HISTORY HUNTING PODCAST
Episode 8. The Horlicks Hoard.

With the hedgerows full, the landscape a million shades of green but land at a premium, Indiana George and his plucky sidekick Paul revisit a strange pond feature slap bang in the middle of one of their fields. They've also been consulting Chat GPT for ideas on how to describe themselves on the pod...

Last time they were here they made one of their most amazing discoveries - an incredible denarii of Severus Alexander. Having already found that amazing coin, the boys aren't sure there's many surprises left here.

How wrong they were…

All About The Base

Episode 7

dimanche 1 juin 2025Duration 36:02

THE LAND ROVERS: A HISTORY HUNTING PODCAST
Episode 7. All About The Base.

With the sun shining and the factor 50 packed, George and Paul head back to their Roman site to see what difference the dry ground makes to their understanding of this unique landscape.

And the answer is - absolutely LOADS.

The amount of pottery now visible against the dry ground, brought to the surface by the plough, is extraordinary.

So much that Paul's spirits can't even be dampened when George identifies his piece of 'hypocaust' as a lovely bit of brick.

And that isn't the only bombshell George drops...

X Marks the Pot II

Episode 6

vendredi 16 mai 2025Duration 41:20

THE LAND ROVERS: A HISTORY HUNTING PODCAST
Episode 6. X Marks the Pot II.

The Empire Strikes Pot.

The Temple of Pot.

Back to the Future Pot II

(Sorry, this is too much fun...)

For metal detectorists, the plough is a miracle worker, bringing well-worked sites back to life - something George knows well from his Helmingham Hoard site where the plough helped unearth hundreds of gold and silver coins. So, when Paul discovers that their 'X Marks the Pot' Roman site has been ploughed for the first time in decades it means only one thing - there’s way more to be found.

Back they go for two days of serious digging, with detectors, finds bags, massive amounts of optimism and tons of questions in toe.

Like, what can the artefacts they’re desperate to find tell us about the ancients who lived there? Can Paul find the rest of his pot? And the big one - who will win ‘best find’?

To answer that, they call in an expert - trained archaeologist Ruby, who just happens to be George's girlfriend...

This... is X Mark the Pot II: Judgement Day.

X Marks the Pot

Episode 5

vendredi 25 avril 2025Duration 24:21

THE LAND ROVERS: A HISTORY HUNTING PODCAST
Episode 5. X Marks the Pot.

Join Paul, George and his muddy Land Rover as they search a mysterious Roman site with links to one of Rome's greatest Emperors, Marcus Aurelius.

Once home to a long-lost family, the boys call on all their experience to try and work out what was going on in this rural Suffolk landscape and make sense of all the clues this ancient family left. For George, it's a chance to add to his vast collection of rare Roman artefacts and his understanding of how everyday Romans lived. He also gets the chance to take a breather and watch Paul dig holes bigger than any man has ever dug before...

In the history world, 'X' never really marks the spot, and it doesn't here either.

It does, however, mark the pot.

THE LAND ROVERS: A HISTORY HUNTING PODCAST
Episode 14. Off To The Market

With George's discovery of a lost Roman Villa officially confirmed by the archaeologists, the ancient landscape around the Villa Daisy site is slowly revealing itself.

When archaeologist Anna tells them more sites are out there, with the villa at their heart, waiting to be discovered, the penny drops for George - he knows about another field with unusual characteristics close by - one that seems to be where the local Romans went to drop their pennies too...
