Episode 205: Andrew Harrison on the secrets of Select Magazine02 Dec 202300:52:38

Andrew Harrison is the Group Editor of Podmasters, home of Oh God What Now?, The Bunker, Paper Cuts, and more. Formally the editor of Q and Word, he worked in a variety of roles at Select magazine - my favourite music magazine of the nineties, because NME was a paper then and thus doesn't count - between 1990 and 1995.

McMahon's Musings #14: Some words about that 'new' Beatles song10 Nov 202300:12:54
Episode 200: The Futureheads (Part two)08 Nov 202300:38:27

Enjoy episode one of my conversation with The Futureheads? Look, I know this podcast thing is a one way conversation, but I’m going to presume that you did given that you appear to have come back for more. Yes, what follows is the rest of my conversation with The Futureheads’ Barry Hyde and Ross Millard, and it includes, among other things, some titbits about what the Sunderland band might do next.

Just a reminder that this podcast is going on a break for a little bit, but it won’t be long and when it returns it'll be shiner that it has been in the two hundred episodes to date. But first things first, here’s Barry and Ross, and just to remind you of where we’re at, we’re talking about Shakin' Stevens. Enjoy the episode!

Episode 199: The Futureheads (Part one)07 Nov 202300:45:22

I can’t believe it took 199 episodes but I finally got, not just one of my favourite bands, but a group I grew up with – an outfit that I’ve known and championed for my entire career as a music journalist – on an episode of the podcast. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, all who fall in between, on this episode I’m speaking to Ross Millard and Barry Hyde from Sunderland new wave punk pop art rock sensations, The Futureheads

I first met The Futureheads when I was just eighteen years old. They were even younger. They used to play my club night, Boyeater, all the time. Over the years we’ve shared all sorts of adventures together. Some of them in music spaces, many of them outside of music, and on this episode we revisit some of our shared memories, but also look to the future - no pun intended. I’m splitting this conversation over two episodes, with part two, episode 200, following tomorrow, after which I’m going to be taking another break from the podcast. The difference this time is that I know I’ll be coming back - but coming back with some aesthetic changes. Stick around, you'll dig it!

But for now... it's The Futureheads!

Episode 198: Jordan Bassett on the illicit thrills of Little Richard06 Nov 202300:59:39

Jordan Bassett used to be a commissioning editor at my beloved NME. Now he’s written his first book. Part of the 33 1/3rd series, the recently released Here's Little Richard tells the story of the rock ‘n’ roll pioneer's 1957 debut, and does so with the flair and precision that I do so love about Jordan’s writing.

In this episode we talk about how the book came to be, how Jordan balanced recounting the sensational nature of Richard’s life with the sublime music he made, and I do my very best to get him into the music of The Make-Up. Buy the book!

Episode 284: Howard Fishman on the search for Connie Converse29 Apr 202400:36:11

Howard Fishman is an American author, culture writer, singer, guitarist, bandleader, playwright, and composer from Brooklyn, New York.

Since 2016 he has been a contributing writer for The New Yorker.

His first book, To Anyone Who Ever Asks: The Life, Music, and Mystery of Connie Converse, was published in May 2023.

Episode 197: Paul Lester, Editor, Record Collector05 Nov 202300:49:08

You probably know by now that I am obsessed with the music press, and so it was it was a treat to speak to Record Collector editor Paul Lester on this episode.

Paul is obsessed with the music press too, and as a former staffer on the forever missed Melody Maker, then pivotal in the creation of Uncut magazine, and now editor of a revitalised Record Collector,  he is perfectly placed to spend an hour talking about where the British music press has been, and where it might go next. I like Paul a lot. I think you might like him too. You can subscribe to his very good magazine here

Episode 196: Alex Dunne, Crime in Stereo04 Nov 202300:35:19

Okay, so there’s still two months to go, but I’m fairly certain that when 2023 is through, my favourite album released this year will be House & Trance by Long Island melodic hardcore champs, Crime In Stereo.

Their first album in 13 long years, you might consider the record as a treatise on the state of the world right now. It's fascinating record, not so much political as a portrait of where we’re at, via the best songs the group have written in the two decades they’ve been with us. It was a honour to speak to guitarist Alex Dunne on this episode, even if we arrive at some very bleak places.

Perhaps what’s most bleak of all? I dare you to tell him he’s wrong...

Episode 195: Will Sergeant, Echo & the Bunnymen03 Nov 202300:29:13

Echo & the Bunnymen are, in my educated opinion, one of the best bands of all time.

Listening to their music growing up I found their songs, and their style, mysterious, detached, magical even, and so when guitarist Will Sergeant had his first memoir published, Bunnyman, in 2021, I dived right in, delighted to peak behind the veil.

Part two of his memoir series, Echoes, was released this summer, and while I haven’t quite finished it yet, it made me feel the same as the first did: sure that Echo & the Bunnymen are one of the best bands of all time, and also that Will is one of my favourite ever musicians. We share a literary agent, so it was easy to get him on the Zoom for a chat about the writing of his books. But as soon as the subject of Bunnymen singer Ian McCulloch came up, the temperature didn’t half dip...

Episode 194: Paul Rees search for the real Elliott Smith02 Nov 202300:32:02

Paul Rees was editor of Kerrang! magazine two suckers before I was. Then he was editor of the forever missed Q. Then he wrote a book about West Brom Football Club that I thought was incredible despite having very little opinion on West Brom Football Club prior to reading it. Now he’s written a book about the late, great Elliott Smith, titled Shooting Star: The Definitive Story of Elliott Smith, for Nine Eight Books.

A no brainer to get him on the podcast, then, and a total delight, despite the harrowing subject matter…

Episode 193: Olly Knights, Turin Brakes02 Nov 202300:33:30

I was very fond of million unit selling, Balham band Turin Brakes when I was a younger man. In fact their first two records - 2001’s The Optimist and 2003’s Ether Song - soundtracked a lot of miserable times I spent in bedsits. It’s testament to the songwriting nous of Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian’s group – and a bit of luck, cough, Take That – that they’re still making records all these years on. And good ones too! 2022’s ninth album, Wide-Eyed Nowhere, is one of their best releases to date. They’re a band who’ve been on my podcast wishlist for ages, and now, here they are.

Hello Olly!

Episode 192: Paul Hanley on the brilliance of Buzzcocks02 Nov 202300:30:38

Paul Hanley used to be in The Fall – he played on, amongst other seminal releases, one of my favourite records, 1982’s Hex Enduction Hour, and with brother Steve, also a member of Mark E Smith’s hugely influential avant garde pop outfit, now hosts the Fall podcast Oh! Brother – but he really, really loves Buzzcocks, who happen to be one of my very favourite bands too. I enjoyed Paul’s first book Leave The Capital hugely, and so when I learned he was writing a book about Pete Shelley’s genius pop punk outfit, titled Sixteen Again: How Pete Shelley & Buzzcocks Changed Manchester Music (and me), I was keen to get him on the podcast for a chat.

The book is due in April next year, but get on that pre-order now!

Episode 191: n0trixx01 Nov 202300:42:04

The mysterious n0trixx hails from Russia, though she now lives in Turkey after fleeing her homeland and Putin’s thugs in the wake of an anti-war protest she attended in Moscow’s Red Square after Mother Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. This is why she now, in public, wears a mask. She also has dissociative identity disorder, a controversial diagnosis to some, but a condition that today’s guest says has left two people inside her physical form, duking it out for control. Oh, and did I mention she makes excellent, unnerving, trap metal too? New EP Rejected arrives on November 17th, and goes a long way to capture the madness of the age. This interview is a wild ride. Do hang in there.

Episode 190: Cathi Unsworth on the high strange of goth01 Nov 202300:34:28

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Yes, it’s Hallowe'en, and you didn’t think I’d let the greatest of all the days pass without something special for you? On this episode I’m speaking to the great Cathi Unsworth, journalist and novelist and specialist on all things dark and strange, and the author of the recently released Season of the Witch: The Book of Goth, published by the ever great Nine Eight Books. We talk about goth, but we talk about UFOs, demonic ghost dogs, and the Yorkshire Ripper too. I could talk to Cathi for hours. I will almost certainly have her back on the podcast at some point. Happy Hallowe’en!

Episode 189: Mariel Loveland31 Oct 202300:58:35

The episode I published yesterday, number 188 with Sci-Fi Steven from Bis, featured the guitarist in my favourite ever band. And this one? It features one of my very best friends, Mariel Loveland from New Jersey indie rock darlings Candy Hearts, electro pop wonders Best Ex, and now… um… just Mariel Loveland!

Mariel recently released her debut solo album, With A Smile, on friends of the podcast Alcopop! Records, and so I thought it was finally time to get her on the podcast for a chat about its release - and so much more. I was a bit worried that our conversation wouldn’t be patch on our usual 2am struggle sessions, but I think we did okay, especially given that it was very late at night and I was full of cold. Enjoy the episode!

Episode 188: Sci-Fi Steven, Bis30 Oct 202300:59:59

Well it took almost 200 episodes, but I finally got my favourite band – like, favourite ever – on the podcast.

I’ll keep this brief because this episode, with a band that actually changed my life, covers a lot of ground, but prinpally this episode hangs around a bunch of stuff I wanted to know about the Glasgow trio’s most recent release, 2022’s Systems Music for Home Defence. There’s a tonne in there however that will light up the heart of anyone else who had their lives changed by the group in the heady days of the late nineties, who made a fanzine, formed a band, or just ate a fucktone of sweets.

Ay okay, we’re podcast avengers!

Episode 187: Mark Trotter, Lonely The Brave29 Oct 202300:34:42

Right, I’ll keep this brief because I waffle on a bit too much at the start of this episode, but on November 10th, epic Brit songsmiths Lonely The Brave return with their new, fourth album, What We Do To Feel. It might be - no really - their best record yet.

On this episode I got to chat to guitarist Mark Trotter about it, and I think the conversation that transpired is an excellent companion piece to a record that is lush, longing, and deeply emotionally charged. Enjoy the episode!

Episode 186: Peter Hooton, The Farm28 Oct 202300:36:55

I’ve wanted to interview Peter Hooton – lead singer in Liverpool’s The Farm – as long as I remember. Recently returned with their first new music in almost 30 years, Peter is one of British music’s great working class heroes. Football fan, fanzine editor, and author of some of the early 90s most interesting indie music, he’s got a lot to say, and I was honoured to be given a little bit of time to hear him say it.

New single 'Feel The Love' is out now, with a new album to follow later, and I can’t help thinking that the themes that are central to The Farm’s music – peace, love and unity – are needed at this present moment more than they have been in a long, long time.

Episode 185: Tim Wheeler, Ash28 Oct 202300:57:42

We're back, baby! I missed you guys!

On today’s episode, it is my pleasure to welcome Tim Wheeler of the seemingly immortal, Northern Irish born, punk pop geniuses Ash. Given that Tim’s band were one of the first groups I ever truly fell for, and we share a tonne of mutual friends, I was surprised to realise that I hadn’t already done an episode with him. Doubly so given that the group's recently released eighth album, Race The Night, is one of the best albums I’ve heard in 2023. And yet I think it was worth the wait! Don't call it a comeback...

I do hope you enjoy it - and do know there's much more of this sort of thing to come.

Episode 184: Ian Richard Devaney, Nation of Language01 Aug 202300:30:27

Do you know what? I think Nation of Language’s new album, Strange Disciple, is the best record I’ve heard so far this year.

You’ll have to take my word for that, the record in full isn’t actually released until September 15th, but if you’re a fan of the Brooklyn based group’s 2020 debut, Introduction, Presence, and their second, A Way Forward, the following year, then you’ll find much to enjoy on their third long player. On this episode I speak to vocalist, guitarist, synthesizer and principal songwriter, Ian Richard Devaney, about the group’s singular vision and why this new record is a more freeform interpretation of it. And we talk a bit about how the internet is making us all mental. And I try to convince Ian to get into fishing.

It’s a podcast, and it’s a public service.

Episode 183: V V Brown31 Jul 202300:52:48

V V Brown is back after what feels like an age away. It’s actually eight years, with little seen or heard of the Northampton born singer since the 2015 release of her third record Glitch. Now back and with a new record, Am I British Yet?, due for release on October 27th, the V V Brown that returns in 2023 is a different kind of Vanessa Brown that what we’ve seen before.

Sure, the new record is as melodic and impassioned as anything that has gone pror, as well as being fuelled by groove, sass and the 39 year old’s unwavering love of 90s hip hop. But while V V Brown has always had a voice – one of modern pop’s most remarkable singing voices in fact – on Am I British Yet?, as much a mediation on Black Britishness as a pop record, you might argue that Vanessa has found her voice. I don’t agree with everything she has to say, I think we might get into some of that when we swing around for part two - but I certainly enjoyed talking to her and exploring some of her ideas. And I hope you enjoy listening to it!

Episode 182: Brian McClair (Manchester United, Celtic, and Scotland football legend)19 Jul 202300:49:28

Something a bit different for you today… footballer, podcaster – I can’t recommend his Life With Brian podcast highly enough – and one of my childhood heroes, Manchester United, Celtic and Scotland football legend Brian McClair!

We get into the music taste of Eric Cantona, Brian’s punk days, why he regularly lied to Shoot magazine, Gary Pallister’s dalliance with Joy Division, why Bryan Robson thought Brian’s taste in music was weird, that massive scrap with Arsenal’s Nigel Winterburn, the managerial style of Sir Alex Ferguson… all sorts of stuff. Somewhere on the astral plane, my ten year old self is kicking himself that he got to record this episode!

Episode 181: Dino Cazares, Fear Factory17 Jul 202300:38:11

2023 sure is an interesting time to be talking to a member of Fear Factory, specifically guitarist Dino Cazares, who – after the departure of long-time vocalist Burton C. Bell in 2021 – is now the last founding member of the influential LA band.

These are days filled with conversations about AI and the future of our species – many of them have taken place on this very podcast – and given the influence of sci-fi on the group's discography, I obviously wanted to get into that with Dino. But I also wanted to talk about Burton, and the coming new era of the group – who now have a new vocalist, Milo Silvestro – and when you might expect to hear new Fear Factory music. I’ll tell you now, it’s probably sooner than you think.

We also get under the synthetic skin of the recently released Re-Industrialized, the reworked version of the groups eighth studio album The Industrialist, a contentious release when it arrived into the world back in 2012. Oh, and we also talk about our bowels. That’s quite early on, so feel free to skip ahead five minutes or so if you’re listening while you’re eating.

Episode 180: Andy Cizek, Monuments15 Jul 202300:47:13

I would have got around to speaking to Andy Cizek, the singer in British progressive metal champs Monuments since 2019, at some point, I’m sure, but when back in January he took to Twitter and said, “being in a band feels pretty stupid now. the culture is embarrassing and nothing about it is cool anymore. Make almost no money and half my old heroes are disgraced perverts. I’ve worked my whole life for this and all I feel is ashamed, broken down and obsolete. Barely hanging on,” he not only verbalised what I’ve been feeling about music culture for ages now, but sped up the process of getting him on Zoom to record an episode.

Even so, it took a few months of Twitter DM tag to make it happen. But I’m so pleased we did. It turns out that Andy has OCD too, as well as a tonne of interesting observations about where rock music finds itself in 2023.

We’ll almost certainly reconvene for part 2 at some point…

Episode 179: Local Natives12 Jul 202300:35:11

Local Natives released their fifth record, Time Will Wait for No One, last Friday and  so I thought I better get them on the podcast pronto for a chat.

The record explores themes of newfound fatherhood, isolation, loss, and identity crisis. And the tunes? The tunes are wonderful. And so I am hugely grateful that vocalist and guitarist Taylor Rice and Ryan Hahn, also on guitar, found the time to talk to me, and - making her debut appearance on this podcast – my wife and Local Natives super fan Kat Kennedy! Hey, you know what they say? The couple that podcasts together, stays together. No, I know, I’ve never heard anyone say that either...
