| From Hidden Gem to Workplace Star: Making Your Mark in Your Organization | 11 Sep 2023 | 00:20:24 | |
Does the Senior Leadership Know Your Name? Do you know those moments at work when you feel like blending into the wallpaper? You're this hidden gem, but no one has the map to find you. Yeah, I've been there, and trust me, so many of the fantastic people I talk to feel the same way. Whenever someone like you shares their story with me, I always think, 'Wow, if only more people knew just how awesome they are.' You’ve got all these amazing talents and ideas, but sometimes it feels like you're whispering in a crowded football stadium. Today, I’m going to dive deep into this topic. It's not just about getting noticed at work but about celebrating all the cool things that make you YOU. Remember, it's not always about the big office or the fancy title. It's about making waves, leaving your mark, and creating your unique magic. So, if you've ever felt like you’re playing small, grab a coffee or a cup of tea, and let's chat. Because you, my friend, are meant for a more expansive career and life. It is possible! How Did I Become Known?I became “known” for my focus on our customers and deep technical and system focus. This didn’t happen overnight…
Some people cared about the Fleet without my expertise, and some had exquisite expertise without understanding what it was like to be a Sailor. I used my combination of experiences and went ALL IN and became known for making sure our customers (the Sailors) have what they need to conduct their missions, in a MAJOR WAY. Does it Matter if You are Known at Work? For many reasons, it is essential to become "known" for something in a large organization. Here are a few of the most important ones:
Of course, there are also some challenges to becoming known in a large organization. It can take time and effort to build a reputation. You may also need to overcome the challenges of being an introvert in a corporate setting. But if you are willing to put in the work, becoming known for something can be a valuable asset to your career. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE NOT KNOWN?There are a few signs that you may not be known in a large organization:
If you can do these things, you will be well on your way to becoming known in a large organization. ACTIVITYChoose 2-3 ideas from this article and begin to implement them. For example, volunteer for a Cross-Organizational Team, ask someone more junior if they would like a mentor, or identify your top three strengths and then brainstorm ways that you might be able to use them more robustly in your current organization. I have a robust activity I take my clients through to get after this in my executive coaching program – it is eye-opening when they realize all they have to offer, yet they have been holding back in many ways that they weren’t aware of. CONCLUSIONIt's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to becoming known in a large organization. The most important thing is to be yourself and to focus on doing great work. If you do that, people will notice you. Here are some additional tips that may be helpful for introverted women:
I hope these tips help you to become known in a large organization. You’ve got this! I hope this conversation today sheds some light into those hidden corners so that you spend less time feeling unseen at work. Remember: you are an absolute rockstar, even if the spotlight hasn't found you yet. Just keep going; it will work. Keep shining and being your fabulous self; trust me, the right people will notice. And if they don't? Well, you’ve got me and the entire community right here that sees and celebrates you. So, until the next episode, take good care of yourself. Stay radiant, stay bold, and always know I’ll be here, cheering you on! Podcast ShownotesThis topic is not just about getting noticed at work but about celebrating all the cool things that make you YOU. Remember, it's not about the position, the title, or the benefits. It's about making waves, leaving your mark, and creating your personal brand of magic. | Breaking the Cycle: Transform Your Life Beyond Comfort and Ease | 17 Oct 2021 | 00:20:56
How does genetic predisposition block your success? Humans are creatures of habit. We find ways to get through life that keep us safe, fed, and comfortable. We have all of our genetic history working to ensure we have a safe place to sleep and food in our belly so we have the energy to find new food tomorrow. This is how we stay alive. Our genetic predisposition also drives us to find the easiest way to get the food and the safety. In other articles, I have talked about ways to remove friction in your life. These have been focused on the process improvements you can make in your own life to help you get things done so you can free up time or reduce drama. So, yes – I am all about making your life function smoothly. It is essential. There is a difference between a smooth, functioning, high-potential life and a life where ease and comfort are your primary goals. The fact that you are reading this article tells me one thing about you: you are interested in finding your highest potential life. If you are interested in changing your trajectory, then it’s time to decide you will do some things differently. What unconscious routines do you follow?Too often, out of habit, you may recycle the same life, day in and day out. Think about it: Even if you haven’t written them down, you do have routines you follow:
Yes – you have routines, habits, essentially patterns in your life that you recycle repeatedly as a month and another year pass. You also have dreams and goals you are struggling to make a reality, and too often, it feels like it will never happen. That is when you start thinking, maybe that dream is not meant for me. Maybe other people can have it, but not me. You think, perhaps my life is as good as it will get. I want to tell you that it doesn’t have to stay this way. Your thoughts, like, “Maybe it’s not meant for me,” will not serve you. Think about something you want and focus on it; get it clear in your mind. Can you picture it? Now say aloud, “Maybe it’s not for me”. How does that make you feel? I bet it makes you feel demotivated, tired, and sad. When you feel demotivated, you eat things you didn’t plan on, drink too much wine, watch too much T.V., or sleep too long. Those actions do NOT result in you taking the steps that would’ve moved you closer to your dream. I need to give you some real talk now: If what you have been doing is not moving you closer to your dream, then the only way to get there is to try something different. You can’t keep waking up like in the movie “Ground Hog Day,” doing the same things and then wondering why nothing changes. You have to decide to deliberately alter your path to go in the direction you want to go. Success is available to you if you choose to move toward it. Are you moving toward your dream?I’ve read “Choice Theory” by William Glasser, M.D.; it is a great companion to this article. Choice theory, as defined in this book, is “Internal control psychology; it explains why and how we make the choices that determine the course of our lives.” Going back to the early episodes of the "Introverted Executive Podcast," you will find an episode about Locus of control. In that episode, we discussed that you either have more of an internal or external locus of control. When you have a more internal locus of control, you believe you have more control over the outcomes in your life, and people with a more internal locus of control tend to become more successful. People with a more external Locus of Control believe that life happens TO them and that they don’t have much control over their outcomes. This book, Choice Theory, is similar, and I love how Dr. Glasser makes some of his points. Ok, think about that dream you thought about earlier in this podcast. Then, think about all of the actions you plan to do today. Dr. Glasser wants you to ask: Will these actions bring you closer to your goal or further from your destination? In each moment, you can move toward your dream or away from your dream. You only have to decide. Is it possible to change a deep-seated belief? You have a LOT more control of your life than you act like you do. The reasons you have these beliefs are complex and many, but suffice it to say that you have been conditioned to believe that many things in your control are not. Beliefs, once seated, are challenging to change – but there are many beliefs you have that are worth questioning. It is possible to change a deep-seated belief, even when you’ve held on to it and believed it was a fact for a long time. I can give you a straightforward example from my own life. I live a keto lifestyle and have for many years. It is mainly because I feel better when I eat many good veggies with good omega-3 fatty acids and nutrient-packed meat protein. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis many years ago, and I know my body feels better and my M.S. symptoms are significantly reduced when I stick to keto. This is a powerful motivator for me not to stray. Still, I am not perfect, and occasionally, when I allow my stress to affect me negatively, I do something I know I will regret later, like running through a drive-through to get carb-laden comfort food. A couple of years ago, I had a breakthrough about this. I work on a Navy base where there is a commissary. The commissary is as close to my office as any lunch restaurant. I went to the produce section and got a take-out salad, which was terrific. That was a markedly different action than I had usually been taking and one that set me up for success. I avoided it because I didn’t feel like walking into the commissary in my business clothes, but that was just a thought in my brain and wasn’t serving me. One slightly different choice made me feel amazing the rest of the day because I ate something clearly ON my plan. (Not sort of on my plan – if I squinted, or barely off my plan, or even entirely off my plan -- which usually makes me feel bad anyway.) What I choose to eat is my choice. One choice makes me feel fantastic, and one option zaps my energy and makes my M.S. symptoms worse. It is MY choice. So – every day, I have to decide if I will choose to blame stress and make bad food choices or walk into the commissary in my business clothes, where I can get fuel for my body that brings me energy. I can improve that even further and choose to pack a healthy lunch that makes eating well easy. Stress is going to happen; that is also something I choose. I went after a career with high responsibility and bouts of anxiety because I care about what I do, and I believe I can manage it. Given that I want to be here, I can choose to make choices that allow me to thrive and grow further, or I can make choices that deteriorate my health. I want you to live a life that embraces the entire human experience. We are only here for so long, and rather than numbing hours and days of your life, I want you to feel alive! I want you to feel like you made a difference. I want you to leave something behind that says you were here. How do you know if you are recycling your life?
If you are reading this, I doubt that comfort and ease are your primary goals. Your highest potential life will only come by stretching your beliefs about what is possible for you and by taking steps toward that idea. If you want to change your trajectory, it’s time to decide you will do some things differently – start today. Start now. Before you know it, you will no longer feel like you are living a recycled life, like you repeatedly recycle the same day. You will have taken control of the outcomes in your life and will be on your way to living a life you thought was only possible in your dreams. | 5 Ways Successful Women Reduce Friction in Their Life | 07 Sep 2021 | 00:24:42
Be The Engineer of Your Life. From now on, I want you to think of yourself as the engineer of your life. You are absolutely are in control of more things than you realize and you can design a life that flows. A life that seems to easily produce the outcomes you’ve been dreaming about. One of the keys to creating a more stress-free life that will allow you to create what you want is to reduce unwanted friction wherever you find it. I want you to think of Friction in scientific terms first. Essentially, whenever one material moves against another, some energy will be lost to friction. Think about when you brush your dog, or go down a slide at a playground, or ground your coffee beans in a grinder. As two materials move against each other, energy is lost. That energy becomes heat which will cause deformation, and wear – which will reduce the life of the material’s that are in contact with each other. There are things you can do to reduce friction in these instances, use detangling conditioner for your dog so the brush glides through, add water flowing down the slide so you slip down easily, or sharpen the blades on the grinder so they process beans easier. The exact same thing will happen to you when you find the areas that are causing pain and friction in your daily life and routines and then take the steps to reduce that friction, little by little, until you discover that you have built a life that makes success easy and overall life become immensely enjoyable. This is going to be one of those episodes that will make you want to jump into action. If you are like me, I know you are ready to fix those pesky areas in your life that are causing unnecessary friction. I am going to give you some steps you can take to reduce the friction and smooth out the path to a life and career you love! The struggle is real… trust me, I’ve been there! You push and push and you work your butt off, but some days, even some weeks and months, you seem to get absolutely nowhere. Sometimes you feel like you are even beginning to slip backwards. I know, there are a few things that you really can’t control. There are times when people in your own family, including in your own home, derail your plans in unexpected ways – and yes, so often unintentional. I know you have a work ethic that is unstoppable and you do find ways to power through most of the asteroids that life hurls your way. Your life does not have to be a constant barrage of unexpected events and struggles you must overcome. If you are ready to take your game to a new level, it is time to think about ways you can smooth out your processes (for you and your family) so that you can avoid all the obstacles coming at you like you are Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, you know the scene… https://youtu.be/voQD3_FPb2w?si=tj-DVq1nbTX1peVJ Let’s start with the idea of process improvement first. Many of you probably hear about this concept, including Lean Six Sigma, at work from time to time. Depending on your company, some organizations take this concept to a nearly religious level. Why? It is all about reducing friction and waste, and when a company does that – they produce their product faster, with higher predictable quality, while reducing stress on current employees. I am sure many of you apply these principles every day at work, you may have even received extensive training in process improvement. Still, many people do not apply these ideas with their family or home. They just don’t think about it. Maybe you think you just want to relax when you get home but what if, starting this weekend, you decided to “improve a process” in your own home or life? Let’s start with some of the obvious things you think about when you think about processes in your home. (And, if you have never even thought of a process in your home like this… then this episode is REALLY going to change your life, ha ha…) Let me give you an example of a “process”. Everyone in my house has a morning routine. I will talk about that more in a few minutes, but this includes the kids – and yes – they had a morning routing even when they were very small. It was good for me, because it helped them get ready to head out of the door, and it was good for them because kids feel safe and secure when they have a routine they are following, it makes them feel like they know what is going on. So… now my two sons are 10 and 14. Every now and then, one of them will say, “I can’t find my favorite socks, I can’t find my running shirt.” They might even say, “Did you wash clothes, mom?” I always have one question and they can hear it coming a mile away…. Did you put your clothes in the laundry basket? Their response is always the same… blank look, eye roll, turn around to go look in their room… NOPE! Too bad… I tell them, “I did laundry last night, I washed all the clothes in the laundry basket.” If the shirt and socks they wanted were not in the basket, it did not get washed. It all goes back to their morning routine, it is simple:
This is just one example of a “process” we have in our house. You have a laundry process too. Even if it is not as defined as mine. There comes a point when you want clean laundry and you do things to make sure you have clean clothes the next day. Some people take their clothes to a laundry service, some have a housekeeper, some do a little laundry every day, some wait for weeks until they literally have nothing to wear and then take eight loads of laundry to the laundromat and spend an entire Saturday washing clothes so they can start it all over. No matter what your way is, it is a process. Obviously, some people’s processes have more room for improvement than others. It is all about what you are willing to live with. Either way, this is an example of how you can find space in your life and day. I am going to talk about five different overarching ways to reduce friction in your life. Every one of you wants something different and has a different expectation of your life, so you will have to get creative as you listen to this episode. I want you to think about the ways you could start to reduce friction in your own life as I share my thought and experiences in this episode. 1. The first overarching way to reduce friction in your life is to develop routines for various parts of your life. Here are a few ideas of routines I have implemented:
2. Automating some areas of my life has become essential as I have become more senior in my career, which has driven the need to optimize my time.
3. Eliminate things not aligned with your vision for your life.
4. Simplify
5. Making your desired actions EASY – some good books that will help with this are tiny habits by BJ Fogg and Atomic Habits by James Clear. If you want to STOP any behaviors or “bad” habits, try this:
If you want to START new behaviors of “good” habits try this:
I just touched on the basics in this episode, but you get the picture. There are so many things you can do to take charge of your own life, create days that are easier on the whole family and set you all up for success. It will be a change at first, but the more you do this and start to look at the things that make life operate smoothly like a well-oiled machine, the more time you will have and the greater chance that you will start to not only feel successful, but you may even find that success will start to just come your way. It’s amazing what happens when you focus on what you want and set up the life around you that practically makes it inevitable. Your life doesn't have to be a constant barrage of unexpected struggles to overcome. Ready to take your game to a new level? Here are 5 ways to smooth life processes so you can avoid obstacles coming at you like you're Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, you know the scene… You can also subscribe to my Newsletter for ongoing accountability, tips and tricks, and tons of great information.
